Ex makes Origi to West Ham claim

Providing an update on West Ham United and their transfer plans for January, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has now shared news involving Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

The Lowdown: West Ham looking to January…

As recently confirmed by manager David Moyes, speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s Europa League clash with Dinamo Zagreb, his Hammers side could be active in the winter window (Sky Sports).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Scotsman says that, as well as scouring for a new centre-half as emergency cover to the injured Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma, his side have been searching for a striker (Sky Sports).

There have been no shortage of links to new forwards already, including the likes of Andrea Belotti and Adam Hlozek most recently, with Ex now sharing what he knows on the West Ham Way Website.

The Latest: Insider makes Origi claim…

As per his information, West Ham could now ‘make a move’ to sign Origi in the upcoming transfer window – explaining it would ‘not be a surprise at all’ if the Irons swoop for his signature.

The 26-year-old, struggling for consistent game time at Liverpool, has also apparently been ‘very close’ to joining previously as Ex claims he may well be one to keep an eye on.

The Verdict: Good option?

Despite his lack of chances under Klopp, Origi has actually managed to turn it on this season when given the chance.

The Belgium international even scored a brilliant individual goal against West Ham at the London Stadium with Liverpool’s boss holding no shortage of praise for some of his exploits this season.

Klopp lauded the striker as a ‘really quick’ player and ‘monster’ in the air recently (The Mirror), and with Origi’s contract expiring in 2022, the Reds may feasibly be forced to sell for a cheaper rate in January.

Racking up a career tally of 63 senior goals, the 31-cap ace could actually come as an ideal back up striking option for Moyes and someone who can finally end West Ham’s year-long search for a Michail Antonio-alternative.

At stumps, Victoria had reached 8 for 321 with Quiney unbeaten on 139 and Pattinson on 1 and their 356-run advantage meant a hefty final-day chase for the Tigers. The Victorians began the second innings with a 35-run lead but the match threatened to turn in Tasmania’s favour when Luke Butterworth ran through the top four batsmen. Victoria were 4 for 65 when Quiney and Aaron Finch came together in a 98-run stand that ensured the visitors regained control of the game.Finch, who was playing his first Sheffield Shield match, was caught behind off Brett Geeves for 50 but Quiney continued to increase Victoria’s lead, helped by Matthew Wade (47). Quiney was in his 26th first-class appearance and was under some pressure to lift his output and he did so, passing triple figures for his state for the first time since October 2008.The battle for first-innings points in the morning was a short one – Tasmania began the day needing 48 runs and the Bushrangers wanted three wickets. The breakthroughs came via Pattinson, who finished with 4 for 52, and the former Tasmania fast man Damien Wright, who collected 3 for 52.

Transfer Focus: West Brom set to sign Jefferson Montero

[ad_pod ]

According to reports from BBC Sport, West Bromwich Albion are set to sign Jefferson Montero on loan for the rest of the season.

What’s the word?

West Brom are flying high in the Championship this season and developed a real lust for scoring goals, netting a division-highest 57 in 28 games so far.

Darren Moore’s attacking ranks, however, have been depleted throughout the January transfer window. Harvey Barnes was recalled by Leicester City, Oliver Burke joined Celtic on loan and Bakary Sako was allowed to return to Crystal Palace.

Montero, meanwhile, is yet to actually start a Championship game this season despite making 12 substitute appearances and grabbing two assists from the bench back in September.

West Brom appear to be taking advantage of Montero’s bit-part status, by swooping for a player who has shown flashes of brilliance in the Premier League previously – during his first season at Swansea, he grabbed seven assists in the top flight.

A new weapon for Moore

If there’s one thing Montero undoubtedly offers, even if his consistency can be questioned, it’s service and trickery in wide positions. Per ninety minutes this season, he’s averaged 2.7 accurate crosses and 4.9 successful dribbles according to Whoscored.

While those statistics are skewed somewhat by the fact Montero has only featured as a substitute, no West Brom player to make more than 10 Championship appearances this season has averaged more than two successful dribbles per ninety minutes, although Matt Phillips matches his return for accurate crosses.

Montero then, offers something a little different in terms of his ability to carry the ball and as we approach the final run-in, that potential to change games by introducing Montero from the bench could be crucial for the promotion-chasing Baggies.

Liverpool remain interested in Leeds’ Raphinha

Liverpool are “big admirers” of Leeds United star Raphinha amid rumours the club are keen on signing him.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks had revealed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are very much interested in a move for Raphinha, amid speculation that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were set to sign him this month.

Now, journalist Pete O’Rourke has delivered an update on the Reds’ current stance on the exciting winger.

He said: “He figures on the list of a lot of clubs. The likes of Liverpool, big admirers of the Brazilian.”

Anfield would be rocking

Dubbed as “star dust” and a “match-winner” by The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Phil Hay, Raphinha has simply been a revelation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since his arrival from Rennes.

This season has seen him score an impressive eight times in 17 Premier League games as well as provide one assist too, including netting against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea recently too.

Raphinha’s displays had Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford hailing him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last year, with the Englishman telling Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.

“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”

As per Whoscored, Raphinha averages a whopping 3.1 shots and 2.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season, both of which rank him very highly compared to the rest of the division – in fact, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah shoot more often than him, while only Lucas Moura, Allan Saint-Maximin and Adama Traore complete more dribbles.

The £36m-rated star would surely get Anfield absolutely rocking with his direct and exciting style of play.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool target has shades of Steven Gerrard…

Man Utd prepared to take huge loss on Antony and sell Brazilian in summer after disastrous season with Erik ten Hag's side

The winger joined from Ajax in the summer of 2022, signing for an eye-watering sum of £86 million ($109m) and amid much fanfare. But manager Erik ten Hag, who spearheaded the approach having managed him in the Netherlands, is yet to get the best out of him. With no goals or assists in 20 league games Antony has gone down as one of the worst signings in Premier League history. Indeed, the reports that United may finally be willing to admit their mistake and let him go.

That decision will reportedly be made as part of a summer of change at the club, when minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe takes over footballing operations and drives the approach for the coming transfer window. The British billionaire is expected to scrutinise the effectiveness of United's squad – which was recently revealed to be the most expensive in football history – with Antony one of many to face the chopping block. The 's report even notes that the club would be prepared to lose over half the £86m fee paid in order to get him gone.

DID YOU KNOW?

Antony's struggles at United have been clear to see in recent weeks. Even Ten Hag, who has remained one of his staunch defenders when the likes of Jadon Sancho and Facundo Pellistri were afforded no such leniency, has looked elswhere of late. The Brazilian has started just one of United's last eight matches, and has seen youngsters Omari Forson and Amad Diallo brought on ahead of him from the bench.

Ten Hag has pointed towards Antony's struggles with domestic abuse allegations – which he vehemently denies – being behind his poor form this season. But his dire record of nine goals in 70 matches across his entire United career makes for grim reading, and will likely lead to his eventual sale in the summer. Antony has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the past.

ECB ponders resting Flower for ODIs

Andy Flower, the England team director, could miss the ODI tour of India in January as the ECB looksto ease his workload

George Dobell20-Nov-2012Andy Flower, the England team director, could miss the ODI leg of England’s tour of India in January as the ECB looks to ease his workload.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket who is currently in India as England’s selector on tour, is in contention to deputise for Flower along with his long-regarded natural heir, England assistant coach Richard Halsall.Flower’s relentless schedule has been a concern to the ECB for some time. Few players are required for all three formats of the game but Flower is intimately involved in the planning, selection and management of the ODI, Test and T20 teams. While individual players have enjoyed rest periods, Flower has been granted only an occasional, brief absence. It is understood there is a particular concern that the Kevin Pietersen saga left Flower drained. The ECB has, therefore, urged Flower to take a break. It believes that investing in a period of rest will help retain Flower’s services for several more years and ensure he remains enthused and motivated.Halsall has deputised for Flower in the past. He stood in for two days of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane in November 2010 when Flower required surgery to remove a melanoma from below his right eye and also when Flower was given a break for the ODI in Dublin in August 2011.But it is understood that Giles is seen as a more suitable long-term substitute. Giles, a former England player and current national selector, recently led Warwickshire to the County Championship title and is emerging as the obvious natural successor to Flower. There could be an element of succession planning in his temporary appointment. No final decision has been made and other options are being considered. Flower could also skip the ODI or the Test section of the New Zealand tour in February. But, with the next World Cup to be played in New Zealand and Australia in 2015, Flower will be reluctant to miss an opportunity to see players in those conditions.

Villa fans hail Sanson vs Liverpool

Many Aston Villa fans hailed Morgan Sanson for his substitute performance in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Villa travelled to Anfield looking to make it four wins from five under their new manager Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard, of course, was returning to the venue where he spent the almost the entirety of his professional career, winning 11 major honours.

The 41-year-old made one change to the team that beat Leicester City 2-1 last time out. Matt Targett came back in at left-back, with Emiliano Buendia benched and Ashley Young moving up to the wing.

Recapping Sanson’s afternoon vs Liverpool

Sanson watched on from the sidelines until the 57th minute, when he replaced Marvelous Nakamba.

He earned a SofaScore rating of 7.0 for his cameo, having excelled on and off the ball.

The Frenchman won six of the eight ground duels he contested and also completed 100 per cent of his dribbles (3/3).

Sanson has now been called upon from the bench in Villa’s last three matches, and will hope to earn his first start of the season against Norwich City in midweek.

According to the source, the Bianconeri are now experiencing financial hardship as a result of not playing in the Champions League and the Italian giants may have to sell one of their youngsters to balance their finances, which would need some sacrifices. According to the source, Soule may be persuaded to accept a proposition from a wealthy financial club that would more than double his present salary.

Time's up for Naby Keita! Liverpool winners & losers as Guinean offers nothing while Jordan Henderson looks frazzled against Crystal Palace

The Guinea midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and did his chances of a new deal no favours with a dreadful performance at Selhurst Park

Don't be fooled by the four-game unbeaten Premier League run; nothing about this Liverpool team is convincing.

The Reds, battered in the Champions League by Real Madrid in midweek, missed the chance to boost their chances of qualifying for next season's competition, delivering a performance high on endeavour but bereft of quality as they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Jurgen Klopp's side hit the bar in the second half through Mohamed Salah, but barely fashioned a clear-cut opportunity throughout, and were fortunate that their hosts, without a win in nine games in 2023, wasted first-half chances of their own through Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The draw moves Liverpool up a place to seventh in the table, but represents a huge missed opportunity to put some serious pressure on the likes of Tottenham, who face Chelsea on Sunday, and Newcastle, who are without a league game this weekend as they contest the Carabao Cup final.

Klopp cut a dejected figure at the final whistle, and will doubtless reflect on yet another underwhelming display from his underperforming side, albeit one which saw them record a fourth straight clean sheet in the league.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Selhurst Park…

GettyWINNER: Tottenham and Newcastle

This was a result that would have been celebrated by Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe, for sure.

Despite all their recent struggles, victory for Liverpool would have put them firmly in the mix for the top-four, moving them to within three points of Tottenham and two of Newcastle. With a winnable home game against Wolves to come on Wednesday, the game would have been very much on.

But you simply cannot rely on this Reds team. They had been unconvincing in winning at St James' Park last weekend, then eviscerated by Real Madrid on Wednesday, and here Klopp's team looked bereft of confidence once an initial 10-minute burst had amounted to nothing.

They won't be in this season's Champions League much longer, and playing like this, they can forget about playing in next year's competition as well.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Naby Keita

If these are the final weeks of Naby Keita's Liverpool career – and let's face it, they should be – then he hardly looks like a player determined to go out on a high.

The Guinea midfielder had a 45-minute nightmare here, his performance littered with errors and fouls, and devoid of any kind of quality.

Booked for a cynical pull on the lively Michael Olise midway through the first half, Keita tested the patience of referee Darren England thereafter, conceding three further free kicks as he continuously nibbled at the heels of Palace players.

It felt like a second yellow was inevitable, and it was no surprise to see Klopp react at half-time. On came Harvey Elliott, off went Keita. He should be off in the summer too. His five-year stay on Merseyside is coming to a pretty tame conclusion.

WINNER: Insomniacs

Those hoping for a Saturday night special under the Selhurst Park lights will have been hugely disappointed by what was served up here.

The worst game of the season? It just might have been. A game of plenty of huff, plenty of puff, but ultimately precious little skill, played out by two teams that look like they can't wait to draw a line under this season.

Palace haven't won since New Year's Eve, and lack any kind of goal threat without star man Wilfried Zaha, while Liverpool are a team that needs open-wallet surgery in the summer, if they are to have any chance of returning to the lofty heights seen in recent years.

Klopp named a starting XI with an average age of close to 30 here, and didn't it show? Liverpool were so short of speed, so lacking in ideas, that it almost felt like they settled for a draw in the closing stages. And what does that say about how far they've fallen?

Still, at least those hoping for an early night had the perfect sleeping pill. And if you're still struggling to drift off, just put this game on repeat.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Jordan Henderson

What is it about that holding midfield role at Liverpool this season?

Having done for Fabinho – who could not even be trusted to start here, and might have been sent off when he did eventually appear – the No.6 position seemed to bring out the worst in Jordan Henderson too.

For one so experienced, some of the Reds captain's decision-making was truly baffling. Never more so than when he inexplicably stood in the line of a free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the first half, despite it being obvious to everyone in the stadium, and everyone watching on TV, that that was where the ball was heading.

Henderson had actually done okay in the first 45 minutes, but his second-half performance was dreadful, completely lacking in composure. He repeatedly hoiked the ball up in the air when calmness was required, and he got involved in altercations with Olise and Jordan Ayew as it became clear that yet another game was getting away from his side.

A skipper's performance, this most definitely was not.

Barcelona, PSG and the European clubs with the biggest wage bills

Eye-watering salaries are expected by any player at a top club these days, meaning wage bills across the continent continue to soar

UEFA has revealed the 20 clubs with the highest wage bills across the 2018 financial year in its annual Club Licensing Benchmarking Report, with Barcelona and Real Madrid once again splashing the most cash.

A record 35 clubs in Europe boasted wage bills of over €100 million across 2018, while the Catalans have become the first side to boast a wage total in excess of €500m.

Though La Liga's two biggest clubs have spent the most individually, Premier League sides make up nine of the 20 clubs with the highest wage bills.
