ESPNcricinfo staff08-Mar-2011Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a side strain he picked up during the close win over South Africa two days ago. Chris Tremlett, who has been travelling with the squad as back-up, has been confirmed as his replacement after ICC approval.Tremlett replaced Broad in the Ashes side after he succumbed to an abdominal tear during the Adelaide Test and great success, finishing with 17 wicket at 23.35 from three Tests. He then played four games of England’s 6-1 defeat in the ODIs that followed but was not as effective and leaked 5.24 runs an over.It took England a day of deliberation to settle upon Tremlett as their replacement. There is a school of thought that England could have wanted to keep him on as back-up for Tim Bresnan, who is coming back from a calf injury, and instead pick legspinner Adil Rashid – who is in the Caribbean with the England Lions at present – in the main squad. As it turned out, they went for the safer option.Broad is the second setback England have suffered since their thrilling and inspiring defence of 171 against South Africa in Chennai on Sunday. They travelled to Chittagong without Kevin Pietersen, who had to end his tournament after that game to go back home for his hernia operation.Broad has also travelled home for further assessment in the UK which will determine his recovery and rehabilitation timescale. He is due to appear for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL which starts in April but that will now depend on the assessment of the ECB’s medical staff.Nick Peirce, ECB chief medical officer, confirmed that the injury is separate to the abdominal tear that ruled him out of three Ashes Tests earlier this winter. “Stuart felt some discomfort following the South Africa match and our initial assessment indicated a strain to his left side,” said Peirce.”Subsequent scans have confirmed a significant side strain injury – where the muscle attaches the rib – that will rule him out of the remainder of the World Cup. This is a new injury, separate from the abdominal tear suffered during the Ashes, that requires a period of recuperation and rehabilitation and the duration of this recovery period will be determined following further assessment in the UK.”With Eoin Morgan’s return to the squad providing a silver lining to the Pietersen injury, Broad’s loss could prove to be more significant. He played a crucial part in England’s morale-boosting defence of 171 against South Africa, taking two top-order wickets and also the last two, with South Africa needing just eight when he started the 48th over. The injury was picked up during that game, after Broad had lost almost 5kg following a stomach bug that laid him low ahead of the India match. He said that he could feel the injury during his second spell, but the adrenalin got him through. “I felt a little tight during the South Africa game,” he said. “It started to throb a little bit throughout my second spell. It stiffened up after the game.”It’s quite a common injury within bowlers,” he said. “If the injury is a natural side strain or tear, it’s something you have to be very careful of, and make sure you take your time to get fit again, and not rush back.”England have played four close matches in the tournament so far. With two win, a tie and a defeat, they are one win short of ensuring a place in the knockouts. They face Bangladesh on Friday before going back to Chennai to face West Indies on March 17.

Chris Sutton fumes at referee’s performance

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was fuming at referee Bobby Madden’s performance in the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final defeat.

The Lowdown: Hoops beaten by rivals

Andy Postecoglou’s side were looking to keep their treble dream alive on Sunday afternoon, as they faced old foes Rangers at Hampden Park.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-2/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

When Greg Taylor fired Celtic in front, everything seemed to be going swimmingly, but Scott Arfield equalised and the game ended up going to extra-time.

It was left to Fashion Sakala to secure a 2-1 win for Rangers, as the Hoops were left to lick their wounds after a bitterly disappointing day at the office.

The Latest: Sutton fumes at Madden

Taking to Twitter after the game, Sutton couldn’t hide his frustration at Madden’s performance, following some questionable decisions on the day:

“Celtic were poor but Bobby Madden turned in one of the worst refereeing performances I’ve seen in Scotland for a long time… and that’s saying something!!!”

The Verdict: Poor day all round

There is no doubt that Madden was poor on Sunday, somehow allowing John Lundstram to commit numerous fouls before being booked, among other errors.

That being said, Celtic must also look at themselves and accept that they were short of their best, as Sutton alluded to in his aforementioned tweet.

You could argue Rangers were the better team for much of the game, with their superiority eventually shining through, even despite playing 120 minutes in the Europa League around 72 hours earlier.

Celtic must now dust themselves down and focus on securing Scottish Premiership glory, hopefully fending off the Gers in the remaining weeks of the season.

Steven Finn wins Emerging Player award

The England fast bowler Steven Finn has capped a remarkable maiden year of international cricket by being named as the ICC’s Emerging Player at their annual awards ceremony in Bengaluru

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Oct-2010The England fast bowler Steven Finn has capped a remarkable maiden year of international cricket by being named as the ICC’s Emerging Player at their annual awards ceremony in Bengaluru.Finn has claimed 32 wickets at 23.21 in his eight Test appearances against Bangladesh and Pakistan, including consecutive five-wicket hauls at Lord’s and Old Trafford in May and June. He made his debut in Chittagong back in March, having flown out to Bangladesh only days earlier as an injury replacement for Graham Onions.Receiving his award from legendary West Indies bowler Joel Garner, Finn said: “It’s a great honour, and one that I wasn’t expecting. It’s been a great honour just to play Test cricket for my country over the past 12 months, because Tests are the highest level of the game, and though it’s been tough at times, there’s the joy of representing your country.”Finn’s 6’7″ frame, allied to a solid temperament and an intelligent game-brain, has made him an integral part of an England bowling attack that has secured victory in seven of their last eight Tests, and even at the age of 21, he is regarded as integral to England’s hopes of successfully defending the Ashes for the first time since 1986-87.”We are very confident going into the Ashes,” said Finn. “We are very well prepared, and though we are going in as underdogs, we have a very settled side.”Finn was one of two Englishmen to make the final shortlist for the awards, alongside his team-mate Graeme Swann, who was nominated for the Player of the Year category. He beat Pakistan’s Umar Akmal, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews and Australia’s Tim Paine to the Emerging Player title, which was won last year by the Australia fast bowler, Peter Siddle. The Emerging Player of the Year Award was one of nine individual prizes given at this year’s ICC Awards. Players eligible for this award must be under 26 years of age at the start of the voting period (August 24, 2009) and have played no more than five Test matches and/or 10 ODIs before the start of the voting period.

India drop Sehwag, call up Pujara

India have dropped Virender Sehwag for the first three matches of the five-ODI series against England, which begins on January 11 in Rajkot

Amol Karhadkar06-Jan-2013India have dropped Virender Sehwag for the first three matches of the five-ODI series against England, which begins on January 11 in Rajkot. The decision came after Sehwag was left out of the XI that beat Pakistan in an ODI in Delhi earlier in the day. India gave a maiden limited-overs call-up to Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 203 off 221 balls in a Ranji Trophy match last week.A BCCI source told ESPNcricinfo that this could well be the end of Sehwag’s limited-overs career. Sehwag has been dropped, said the source, because “he doesn’t figure in the plans for the 2015 World Cup”. Pujara has been brought in “to anchor the innings, especially in the wake of new rules”, which now allow a maximum of two bouncers per over and require a minimum of five fielders inside the circle at all times, which encourages more attacking bowling. The selectors have left it to the team management to decide Pujara’s batting position.Pujara’s inclusion was the only change to the squad that lost 1-2 to Pakistan, which meant MS Dhoni, India’s best batsman in the series, kept his captaincy despite calls from former selectors for fresh leadership. The sources said Dhoni’s captaincy didn’t go through much of a debate.Rohit Sharma was retained despite poor returns in ODIs of late. His last six scores were 5, 0, 0, 4, 4 and 4. Since the end of the series against West Indies in 2011, when he was the Man of the Series, Rohit has averaged 13 over 14 matches with one half-century. Rohit escaped the axe primarily because of “lack of alternatives”. He might not have made it had Manoj Tiwary been fit.Since his double-century against West Indies in December 2011, Sehwag has averaged 23 over 11 matches, including a top score of 96. Sehwag is possibly seen as the weaker fielder, which becomes significant keeping in mind the World Cup in Australia.Sehwag’s replacement, Pujara, is quick in the field and has been scoring runs. After his double-century that stunned Madhya Pradesh six days ago, Pujara said he knew his time was not far away. “That [ODI selection] is something that is not in my control,” Pujara had told ESPNcricinfo. “I have always performed in domestic one-dayers. I don’t need to worry about it. My time will come. One way or the other I will get my chance to play in the ODI team. I just need to keep performing.”The bowlers were all retained after they successfully defended 167 against Pakistan on Sunday, India’s fourth-lowest score batting first in an ODI win.Squad: MS Dhoni (capt), Cheteshwar Pujara, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra.

Urhoghide backed to leave Celtic

Celtic will consider allowing youngster Osaze Urhoghide to leave permanently this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Urhoghide out on loan

The 21-year-old was loaned out to Oostende during the January transfer window in order to enjoy more regular playing time away from the Premiership.

Urhoghide had been limited to just one appearance for Celtic in the Europa League this season prior to his temporary exit, and he has since gone on to make seven starts for Oostende in the Belgian top flight.

The youngster will return to Parkhead when his loan spell expires next month, but it has been claimed that he may not be in Glasgow for much longer.

The Latest: Urhoghide could leave Celtic for good

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Ange Postecoglou could allow Urhoghide to leave Celtic for good in the summer. The journalist stated:

“It’s going to be an interesting one, I’m sure Celtic will consider this in the summer to see what they want to do with him.

“He’s obviously gone out to Belgium and done very well. Oostende are very keen to make that signing permanent, but I’m sure Ange Postecoglou will be looking at him.”

The Verdict: He could be better off going

Urhoghide seems to be a talented young footballer who has already made an impression during his fledgling career – he was once described as ‘immense’ by his former Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore – but all things considered, it would make sense for him to leave Celtic permanently.

First-team opportunities will likely become even harder to come by under Postecoglou, with the near-inevitability of Champions League group stage football requiring more stellar names to arrive at Parkhead this summer.

Urhoghide would be better off relocating elsewhere in order to not go stagnant and find himself on the substitutes’ bench every week; and perhaps a permanent move to Oostende, where he appears to be having a fruitful loan spell, could be best for him.

Swan and Lynn see Queensland home

Chris Swan gorged on 13 wickets and Chris Lynn sped to 99 as Queensland came from behind to beat South Australia by five wickets

Graham Manou’s aggressive 116 dug the Redbacks out of trouble after they started the day at 4 for 32, and by the time he was last man out they were 198.That left Queensland wanting 226 for victory and they were immediately in difficulty at 2 for 8 and 3 for 41 before Lynn, a 20-year-old right-hander, started to dominate. He put on 76 with Ben Dunk (30) and was a run away from a deserved century when he fended Gary Putland to second slip.James Hopes (46) and Chris Hartley (35) made sure of the win with a day to spare as they repaid Swan for his outstanding efforts. Swan, the swing bowler, was dropped for the previous game but showed he is a master of Brisbane conditions with match figures of 13 for 144, the best in the competition for nine years. His 7 for 75, which beat his day-old career peak, began with three wickets on Thursday and finished with the final three of the innings. Manou, who hit 16 fours and two sixes, was his last victim when he skied to Lynn at cover.

Amjad Ali stars in convincing UAE victories

Amjad Ali struck a fifty and a century as UAE beat Bermuda in the two Twenty20 matches at the National Stadium

Cricinfo staff13-Jul-2010
ScorecardUAE were stretched by a robust batting performance from Bermuda chasing 179, but prevailed by 21 runs in the first of two Twenty20 games in Hamilton. Amjad Ali was aggressive at the top after UAE elected to bat, and smashed three fours and as many sixes in his 53 to launch his side to a big total. Saqib Shah kept things rolling from the other end as the opening stand raised 67 in under eight overs. Offspinner Rodney Trott and seamer Kevin Tucker brought Bermuda back into the game during the end overs, but UAE had enough momentum to reach 178, with Saqib Ali and Arshad Ali making crucial contributions.Bermuda began their chase positively, with Chris Foggo striking a six before being stumped off Shadeep Silva. David Hemp and Steven Outerbridge gave their side a strong chance at victory, adding 57 in 53 balls before Arshad Ali brought UAE back in the game. He finished with 2 for 22, as Bermuda lost too many wickets and fell out of the reckoning. Outerbridge remained unbeaten on 43, and despite Jordan DeSilva’s 18 off 12 balls, UAE prevailed easily in the end.
ScorecardWhile UAE had to earn their win in the first game, the second match was a walk in the park once again masterminded by Amjad. He went one better than his fifty earlier in the day and finished with a fluent 105 off 61 balls with eleven fours and five sixes. The bulk of UAE’s runs came during Amjad’s second-wicket stand with Swapnil Patil – 117 runs in 12 overs. Bermuda recovered towards the end of the innings, with Outerbridge taking three wickets including that of Amjad’s to deny UAE a score in excess of 200, but sufficient damage had already been done.Bermuda were never in the hunt after losing Hemp in the first over. Fiqre Crockwell and Outerbridge kept attacking during their second-wicket stand of 53, but the innings unraveled once the left-arm spinning duo of Shadeep Silva and Ahmed Raza came on. Their seven overs yielded only 29 runs while accounting for five wickets as Bermuda suffered a resounding defeat.

By the close, England’s openers, Joe Root and Daniel Bell-Drummond, had added 14 runs for the first wicket in three overs. After winning the toss in bowler-friendly conditions, England’s captain Azeem Rafiq unsurprisingly chose to field first, and he was rewarded with a wicket in the very first over, as Yasoda Lanka fell to Atif Sheikh for a duck.Ramith Rambukwella and Bhanuka Rajapaksa responded in thrilling fashion, adding 74 for the second wicket in 10.3 overs, before Dunn made the first of his four breakthroughs by removing Rambukwella for 34 from 30 balls. Rumesh Buddika and Rajapaksa followed in quick succession to Lewis Gregory, and at 101 for 4, the innings had been transformed.Kithuruwan Vithanage top-scored for Sri Lanka with 52 from 108 balls, and there were useful contributions from the wicketkeeper Denuwan Rajakaruna (44) and the captain Chathura Peiris (46). Dunn, however, cleaned up the innings by bowling Nos. 10 and 11 in consecutive overs, to complete a satisfactory day for England.

Phil Hay makes double Leeds transfer claim

Leeds United had looked at signing Takumi Minamino and Kenedy as possible replacements for Crysencio Summerville in January, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Summerville stays put

Summerville was linked with a move away from Elland Road late in the month, with a loan switch to Hamburg mooted.

Instead, the 20-year-old ended up staying put at Leeds, where he will hope to play an important role in the Whites’ bid to remain in the Premier League this season. He has made eight appearances in all competitions so far in 2021/22, including five in the league.

The Latest: Leeds had two possible replacements lined up

According to Hay in an article for The Athletic, both Liverpool’s Minamino and Chelsea’s Kenedy were seen as options if Summerville had moved on from Leeds in January. The journalist wrote:

“Various clubs in Europe were asking about Summerville but Marcelo Bielsa’s instinct was to hang onto him. The danger, as Leeds saw it, was that if Summerville insisted on moving on loan, as Cody Drameh did, then Bielsa might quickly usher him out the door.

“In which case, the club would be another man down and under pressure to rustle up a replacement. They took a tentative look at Takumi Minamino of Liverpool and Chelsea’s newly back from loan Kenedy but stepped back again once the decision to retain Summerville was made.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Chance for Summerville to shine

Summerville is unlikely to be a key figure at Leeds in the coming months, considering that the likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Dan James are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

That being said, he could see it as a great opportunity to prove his long-term worth to the club, potentially affecting games upon coming off the bench and looking to create opportunities from out wide.

He caught the eye of Beren Cross last summer, with the Leeds Live journalist describing the youngster as “a runaway train” after some very impressive performances.

A loan move would have had its benefits in terms of the likelihood of more playing time, but Summerville could arguably learn more from training alongside some of his illustrious Leeds teammates. Also, as Hay pointed out, it would have left Bielsa sweating on bringing in someone like Minamino or Kenedy in order to fill the void.

Klusener turns down Bangladesh coaching role

Lance Klusener has finally turned down the offer to take over as Bangladesh’s bowling coach, ending a prolonged period of speculation over his possible appointment

Cricinfo staff02-Sep-2010Lance Klusener, the former South Africa allrounder, has finally turned down the offer to take over as Bangladesh’s bowling coach, ending a prolonged period of speculation over his possible appointment. Klusener, who was in discussions to replace Sri Lanka’s Champaka Ramanayake, was reportedly unable to convince his wife about a permanent move to Bangladesh.BCB had tried to be flexible with Klusener’s demands to return home between series. “We are ready to fulfill all his demands,” BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus said. “He wanted some additional facilities and we agreed. We were also ready to allow him to go on a long leave between the twin home series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe and the World Cup.” However, the board was not open to the idea of having him on a strictly tour-by-tour basis.Klusener, who has a level-three coaching degree, was in the frame following Ramanayake’s resignation due to illness. “He put us in a serious trouble as we are now facing a race against time to appoint a bowling coach for the Tigers,” Yunus said. “We don’t have too many options now.”England’s Andy Caddick was an option but he has a business interest at home. We had also contacted Venkatesh Prasad, but he is also unlikely to come as he has a chance of joining the Asian Cricket Council as a development coach.” Colin Croft , the former West Indies fast bowler, had expressed interest in the role but was rejected for a lack of coaching experience.Meanwhile the board appointed sports psychologist Soumendra Saha as a consultant for the side. Saha who joined the squad’s training camp in Mirpur, will work closely with the players for three weeks before returning to his teaching job with a university in Malaysia.
