Sarina Wiegman, Laura Harvey and the potential candidates to take over as USWNT coach following Vlatko Andonovski's resignation

The 46-year-old has walked away from the national team job after an embarrassing World Cup, so who should be considered to replace him?

It was once the biggest job in the women's game, and perhaps it still is. The United States women's national team is looking for a new head coach to usher in a new era but, strangely enough, there isn't an obvious candidate out there.

Vlatko Andonovski is gone after a disastrous 2022 World Cup that saw the U.S. eliminated in the last 16. The moment the USWNT fell to Sweden, Andonovski's fate was sealed. There would be no second cycle, no Olympics; this team was onto something new.

Whichever coach comes in will face a massive task in rebuilding a fallen juggernaut. There's no debating that the USWNT regressed under Andonovski, although how much is up for debate. Did the rest of the world catch up completely or did the USWNT never quite find the level needed to be, well, the USWNT?

The answer is probably somewhere in the middle. This is a team and a player pool still loaded with talent, but also one that needs some tweaks. The USWNT's mentality and athleticism aren't enough to overwhelm teams anymore and, as several key veterans prepare for their exits from the international stage, it'll be up to a new head coach to build this team around several new stars.

With the 2024 Olympics just a year away, that new coach won't have too much time to put their stamp on things before a major tournament begins. Even with what we saw this summer, though, the USWNT will be among the favorites in Paris, especially if the new coach can make even the slightest tweaks to the factors that let the USWNT down this summer.

So who might that coach be? GOAL takes a look at some of the candidates to replace Andonovski:

GettySarina Wiegman

Probably the best coach in the women's game right now, but also a hire that is essentially a pipedream. Sarina Wiegman is set to lead England into the country's first Women's World Cup final on Sunday, having already won back-to-back European Championships and taken her native Netherlands to the 2019 World Cup final.

Her contract with England runs through 2025 and, with the Olympics just around the corner, is there really any reason for her to leave? The answer is 'probably not', but U.S. Soccer will almost certainly make the call to check just in case.

AdvertisementGettyLaura Harvey

Probably the most natural hire the USWNT could make, Laura Harvey has coached the U.S. at U20, U23 and senior level, and has worked with Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Naomi Girma during their rises to the top of the game.

Harvey, of course, is close with Andonovski, having worked with him and competed against him, so there could be concern about having too much continuity after a poor World Cup. Her time with OL Reign, though, has proved she's a fantastic coach, and she's already come out and hinted that she'd be interested in the role if offered.

"The U.S. women's national team is probably the top job in the world," she said. "If my name is anywhere near it, that's an honor. But first and foremost, my priority is the Reign."

GettyTony Gustavsson

Tony Gustavsson led hosts Australia on a magical run through the World Cup, so his stock has never been higher. And, given his USWNT history, he may be the perfect fit.

Gustavsson previously served as an assistant under Jill Ellis from 2014-19 before returning to his native Sweden when Andonovski was hired. In 2020, he took over the Matildas and led them on a fantastic run to the semi-finals of this World Cup after finishing fourth at the Olympics in 2021.

He's another one that may not want to leave a good situation with the Olympics looming and his results with Australia, until this summer, were possibly a bit too inconsistent to overlook. Ellis, though, has already backed him, telling ESPN: "He should definitely be a strong candidate for the job."

GettyEmma Hayes

One of the top coaches at club level in the women's game, could Emma Hayes be tempted by the biggest job at international level?

Hayes has been the Women's Super League's best coach for years, winning the Manager of the Season award six times, as well as The Best FIFA Football Coach in 2021. She also has a history in the U.S., having previously coached Long Island and Iona at the college level, before managing the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL.

Prying her away from Chelsea may be impossible, but the USWNT job is one of the few in the world that may be better than coaching the Blues.

Can Vietnam avoid 'doing a Thailand'? What the USWNT can expect from their opening World Cup opponents

Vietnam's recent rise has been impressive, but they'll need a miracle to make it through the group stages

Vietnam are one of eight teams making their Women's World Cup debut in Australia and New Zealand this summer. Making it to the grandest stage of them all, though, would have seen fancical when they played their first ever game in 1997.

However, steady improvement over the past decade means they will be mixing it with some of the best players on the planet in Group E. The United States, the Netherlands and Portugal are their opponents – three extremely tough tests on paper.

Vietnam will therefore need a minor miracle to make it through to the knockout stages, but the fact that they have made it here at all is a source of enormous pride back home. Their journey begins with a daunting match against reigning champions, the U.S., where they'll be hoping to avoid a heavy defeat in front of a global television audience.

GettyHow they got here

The 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup was used to determine World Cup qualification in Asia. The tournament was hosted by India and each squad was subjected to strict coronavirus rules. The hosts themselves even had to withdraw from the competition after a spate of Covid-19 cases decimated their playing ranks.

Vietnam were placed in Pot Three for the draw and ended up in a strong group alongside 2011 World Cup winners Japan, South Korea and Myanmar. As expected, they found it tough. Japan and South Korea each helped themselves to 3-0 victories over Vietnam, with their game against Myanmar ending 2-2.

Despite earning just one point, they squeezed through to the knockout stages as the second-best third-placed team, due to Iran losing each of their group games. Vietnam met eventual winners China in the quarter-finals, succumbing to a 3-1 defeat.

However, salvation came in the form of another safety net. As a result of the World Cup being expanded to 32 teams, an additional automatic place was available via a round-robin play-off contested between each of the fallen quarter-finalists – minus Australia, who qualified automatically as hosts.

Vietnam began with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Thailand and a second win over Taiwan meant they topped the group and progressed to their maiden World Cup. Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy was the hero in the second, decisive game, dedicating her winner to her late father, who passed away in 2016.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesA rising power in Asian football

Although they remain well behind China, Japan, South Korea and Australia, Vietnam have emerged as the leading footballing power in Southeast Asia in recent years.

They have won the women's football tournament in each of the past four SEA Games, most recently defeating Myanmar 2-0 in the 2023 final in Cambodia. Vietnam also won the 2019 AFF Women's Championship, shocking hosts and bitter foes Thailand in the final.

The fact that they have made it to the World Cup, and their long-time rivals have not, makes their maiden tournament appearance all the sweeter. The next step in their development will be looking to challenge the AFC's big four, though this is easier said than done due to the vast resource gap.

Getty ImagesThe MVP

This wasn't a hard choice. Huynh Nhu is Vietnamese football's first superstar. Not only is she her country's all-time leading scorer with 67 goals in just 103 caps, Nhu is also the only player in the squad who plies her trade overseas.

In August 2022, she was snapped up by Portuguese side Lank FC Vilaverdense. Located in Braga, the team are reported to be increasing her salary to around $3,200 per month next season following an impressive maiden campaign in Europe.

The move is a source of enormous national pride back home, with coach Mia Duc Chung telling FIFA.com: "It is a great honour when a European country signs a South-east Asian player, a Vietnamese one. It’s a big achievement for Huynh Nhu and I think it's an honour for our country. She is a good example for our female players to follow and it will help Vietnam women's football to be well known and respected."

The five-time Vietnam Golden Ball winner is a set-piece wizard and chipped in with some vital goals in qualifying. If they are going to make the net bulge this summer, she is the most likely player to do it.

Barcelona, PSG and the European clubs with the biggest wage bills

Eye-watering salaries are expected by any player at a top club these days, meaning wage bills across the continent continue to soar

UEFA has revealed the 20 clubs with the highest wage bills across the 2018 financial year in its annual Club Licensing Benchmarking Report, with Barcelona and Real Madrid once again splashing the most cash.

A record 35 clubs in Europe boasted wage bills of over €100 million across 2018, while the Catalans have become the first side to boast a wage total in excess of €500m.

Though La Liga's two biggest clubs have spent the most individually, Premier League sides make up nine of the 20 clubs with the highest wage bills.

‘Hilarity for miserable souls’ – Harry Kane backed to silence ‘mean-spirited’ critics of Bayern Munich transfer by shunning Premier League return & breaking trophy duck in Germany

Harry Kane’s struggles at Bayern Munich may be generating “hilarity for miserable souls”, but he is being backed to break a trophy duck in Germany.

England captain moved to Germany in 2023In danger of missing out on major silverwareExpected to honour more than 12 months of dealWHAT HAPPENED?

That may not happen this season, with the England captain enduring a testing debut campaign at the Allianz Arena. He has delivered on a personal front, registering 29 goals through 30 appearances, but is in serious danger of seeing elusive major silverware fall out of reach once more.

AdvertisementWHAT JORDAN SAID ABOUT KANE

Bayern have slipped off the Bundesliga title pace, and are trailing a Champions League last-16 encounter with Lazio, but Kane is being tipped to spend more than 12 months in Munich. Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has told the : “Anyone who looks at Bayern Munich’s woes as some form of retribution for Harry Kane upping sticks to Germany, where titles are apparently a given for his new club, is particularly mean-spirited. It is ironic given the upheaval, upset and lack of achievement at Tottenham that, after winning the title for 11 years in a row, it looks like Bayern are going to miss out this season. Cue much hilarity for miserable souls who seem to take delight in Kane’s failure to win a trophy. But, really, it is unfair to suggest Kane is complicit in Bayern falling short. He has done his job, scoring 25 goals in 22 games, so placing any criticism at his door is ridiculous. I’ve never been of the view that his lack of trophies reflects poorly on him. The guy scores 25-plus goals a season come rain or shine. That is the definition of a world-class striker and there are so few about. That’s why they command so much money and why they are so difficult to buy. Although Kane could be the perfect signing for any elite Premier League club looking for that elusive world-class striker, I don’t see him coming back to England this summer. If I were him I would want to stay until I had won something, otherwise what was the point in going?”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jordan went on to say, with Kane committing to a contract through to 2027: “In fact, a barren year would be even more reason to stay. The fact that the allegedly wonderful, revolutionary and innovative manager Thomas Tuchel will not be there is unlikely to affect his thinking either. Would his appetite to win trophies have been sated by winning something with an all-conquering Bayern this season? No. So why would he leave after one year when they haven’t won anything? At the time of his transfer I questioned whether a Bundesliga title would be meaningful to the England captain, but he made his choice and I don’t see him cutting and running just because Bayern are having a poor season. He went to Germany to win things and it is more likely than not that they will win something next year. They are certainly a better bet than any Premier League side who might want to sign him — apart from Manchester City. In the unlikely event that Bayern were happy to cash in, Kane would obviously interest England’s top clubs. Chelsea and Arsenal may have most need for his services and are perhaps able to meet his expectations. But a move to either of Tottenham’s arch-rivals is a flight of fancy and would be the ultimate legacy killer for a player who appears to pride himself on loyalty and integrity.”

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

There has been talk of Manchester United being ready to rekindle their interest in Kane, but the Red Devils cannot offer guarantees of trophy triumphs and Kane – who will lead his country into a quest for Euro 2024 glory this summer – is expected to stay put after stepping out of a professional comfort zone and moving his young family to Germany.

The winger joined from Ajax in the summer of 2022, signing for an eye-watering sum of £86 million ($109m) and amid much fanfare. But manager Erik ten Hag, who spearheaded the approach having managed him in the Netherlands, is yet to get the best out of him. The 's report even notes that the club would be prepared to lose over half the £86m fee paid in order to get him gone.

Man City player ratings vs Red Star Belgrade: Julian Alvarez saves Champion League holders from opening-night embarrassment as Phil Foden shines again in midfield

The Argentine struck two quick-fire goals to get Pep Guardiola's side back on the path to a 3-1 victory after Osman Bukari's shock opening goal

When Erling Haaland is having an off day, Manchester City fans can thank their lucky stars for Julian Alvarez, who guided the Champions League holders towards a 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade after an almighty scare on the opening night of their European title defence.

Despite utterly dominating Red Star in a first half in which Haaland hit the crossbar and missed two more opportunities, the visitors took a shock lead right before half-time with a goal from out of nowhere by Osman Bukari, initially called offside then awarded by VAR.

City were 45 minutes from becoming only the second team in Champions League history to lose their first game as competition holders, but their fears were quickly alleviated by a beautiful goal by Alvarez, who steered a Haaland pass into the net with the lightest of touches.

Alvarez then put City in front with a free-kick which Red Star 'keeper Omri Glazer really should have kept out, before Rodri, the hero of the Champions League final in Istanbul, fittingly had the final say with a lovely piece of skill and curling finish.

GOAL rates Man City's players from the Etihad Stadium…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Ederson (6/10):

Had little to do overall but was quick to come out of his area in the second half and thwart a Red Star break, even attempting a backheel in the middle of the pitch.

Kyle Walker (7/10):

Alert, physically dominant and hugely influential. Tried to score a couple of times and put the ball in the net but was offside. Really justifying his bumper new contract.

Ruben Dias (5/10):

Played Bukari onside for Red Star's shock goal. Other than that he was as solid as usual, using his strength to his advantage.

Nathan Ake (6/10):

Dominant in defence and contributed his fair bit in attack.

Sergio Gomez (4/10):

Got forward a lot but rarely contributed much. Kept misplacing passes or making the wrong decision. Taken off before the hour-mark.

Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Lacked a bit of spark before being replaced late in the first half with an injury problem.

Rodri (8/10):

Outstanding from start to finish, even after picking up an early yellow card. Threatened to score for most of the game and finally did so with a classy dribble past a defender and exquisite finish.

Matheus Nunes (6/10):

A solid full debut aside from the fact he missed the header which led to Red Star's lightning strike. Otherwise slotted straight into Guardiola's system, although could have shown a bit more ambition in an attacking sense.

GettyAttack

Phil Foden (8/10):

Energetic, reactive and instinctive. Kept feeding Alvarez and Haaland and was always on hand to win the ball back.

Erling Haaland (6/10):

His finishing was very disappointing but he compensated with a marvellous assist for Alvarez's first goal.

Julian Alvarez (9/10):

Quickly turned the game on its head. His first goal was a thing of beauty, a wonderfully subtle finish after a dream pass from Haaland. His second had a bit of luck to it but he took a chance by going straight for goal and testing the weak Glazer. Could have had a hat-trick.
