Newcastle Are "Huge Fans" Of £2,500-A-Week Prodigy

Newcastle United are one of a number of top clubs who are interested in signing Fenerbahce youngster Arda Guler in the summer transfer window, according to a new report.

How good is Arda Guler?

The 18-year-old is arguably one of the most exciting young players in Europe at the moment, already producing a string of impressive performances for Fenerbahce.

Last season, Guler scored four goals and registered three assists in the Turkish Super Lig, also chipping in with one apiece in the Europa League, becoming a regular despite still being such a young player.

It is no secret that there is a huge amount of interest in the teenager this summer, with many top Premier League sides interested in signing him due to a relatively low £15m release clause. Newcastle are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move, as the Magpies look to complete some exciting transfer business ahead of their return to the Champions League.

A fresh update suggests that their interest isn't going away, although it may not be easy for them to acquire the services of the £2,500-a-week ace.

Arda Guler

Could Newcastle sign Guler this summer?

According to TEAMtalk, Fenerbahce are desperately trying to persuade Guler to stay put this summer, but Newcastle are falling in love with the player after their scouting trips:

"Newcastle are huge fans of the player and have tracked him for a number of months. But they are not alone as several other Premier League clubs are keen too. Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Brighton were also in attendance for Turkey’s victory.

"Major European sides Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Inter, Juventus, Dortmund, Leipzig, Benfica and Porto watched Guler’s brilliant goal as well."

Guler is clearly a special prospect, with Italian legend Andrea Pirlo claiming there is "no limit to his potential", as well as hailing his "great technique", so Newcastle signing him could feel like a massive coup.

At just 18, he is already a four-cap Turkey international, scoring once in that time, and he is only going to mature further as a player as the years pass, starring in a central midfield role and being able to take up a more attack-minded position, too.

It is vital that Newcastle sign both players for the present and the future, ensuring they continue to grow into a major force in English football, and Guler is someone who could arrive as an exciting squad player to begin with, before eventually becoming a genuine star and one of the first names on the team sheet.

Lions leapfrogged Warriors at the foot of the table after winning a tight game at Buffalo Park by 14 runs. Set 258 to win on the last day after an overnight declaration by Lions, Warriors slipped to 44 for 2 before staging a series of fightbacks. First came a 112-run fifth-wicket partnership between Colin Ingram (46) and Lesiba Ngoepe (77 off 104 balls, 9×4), before both fell in the space of 16 balls. It was 183 for 8 following two more quick wickets, and Warriors seemed on the brink of a comfortable win, when Simon Harmer (45) and Anrich Nortje (26 off 24 balls) jolted them with a 54-run ninth-wicket stand. It wasn’t quite enough, though, as Warriors dismissed both of them in the space of nine balls. Beuran Hendricks, Ayavuya Myoli and Bjorn Fortuin took three wickets each.Only 30.3 overs were possible on the first day’s play after Warriors chose to bowl first. Starting day two on 107 for 3, Lions were bowled out for 307. Opener Stephen Cook (50) and No. 5 Rassie van der Dussen (82 off 175 balls, 10×4) were their top scorers while the fast bowler Nortje picked up four wickets. Then, with both teams looking to make up for time lost on day one, came a pair of declarations. Warriors were 104 behind when they closed their first innings, after an unbroken 80-run seventh-wicket stand between Somila Seyibokwe (52*) and Harmer (31*) had rescued them from 123 for 6. Then Lions lost two early wickets to Basheeru-Dean Walters before Dominic Hendricks (76*) and Temba Bavuma (52*) added a brisk, unbroken 113 to set up a second-innings declaration at 153 for 2.

Sky Sports reporter: Big De Gea twist from insider Man United

David de Gea's future is hanging "in the balance" at Manchester United as Erik ten Hag is yet to make a decision on whether to hand the Spaniard a new contract, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

What's the latest on De Gea?

De Gea endured a somewhat turbulent season with the Red Devils last year.

The 32-year-old won the Premier League Golden Glove award, as well as being nominated for Save of the Season accolade, but made a number of high-profile gaffes throughout the campaign that led to question marks over the shot-stopper's future.

Much of the discourse surrounding De Gea has been due to his inability to play with his feet, certainly in comparison to other goalkeepers in the division, leaving Ten Hag questioning whether a more progressive, modern goalkeeper is needed for his squad.

Despite his contract expiring at the end of June, United left the Spaniard off their retained list at the end of the season, suggesting that contract discussions are taking place.

De Gea has already agreed a pay cut to his £375,000-a-week salary, but talks have seemingly not progressed, even prompting the goalkeeper to post a yawning emoji on his Twitter account.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Dharmesh Sheth admitted that De Gea's future is still very much uncertain at Old Trafford.

"I’ve spoken to him many times about David de Gea, and it looked like it was odds on he was going to stay at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag would make all the right noises in news conferences particularly after high-profile errors David de Gea would make. He would say ‘Look, he’s kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League."

Sheth added: "But the information we’re getting now is that David de Gea’s Manchester United future is in the balance, and that both parties, Manchester United and David de Gea, are considering all of their options."

If De Gea were to leave the club for free, United would need to dip into the market to find a new goalkeeper, leaving even fewer funds to be spread across the rest of the team.

De Gea has enjoyed a fruitful 12-year career at the Theatre of Dreams, appearing 545 times for the Red Devils and winning five major trophies with the club.

Who could United replace De Gea with?

Links with several goalkeepers have already surfaced as United prepare for a potential future without De Gea, the most prominent of which has been rumours of a deal for Inter's Andre Onana.

According to reports, Onana's agent has already met with Manchester United to discuss a move, with Ten Hag being told his side need to cough up over £40m for the recent Champions League finalist.

There have also been strong links with Everton and England stopper Jordan Pickford, as well as Porto's young goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

However, it appears that Onana is the priority should De Gea be pushed out of Old Trafford this summer.

Duckett and Vince show form in North-South warm-ups

Ben Duckett and James Vince warmed up for the North-South Series with fluent centuries on a high-scoring day at the ICC Academy in Dubai

Ben Duckett and James Vince warmed up for the North-South Series with fluent centuries on a high-scoring day at the ICC Academy in Dubai.Duckett cracked 137 from 92 balls, with three sixes and 22 fours, as the North piled up 416 for 6 against a full-strength but rusty Worcestershire attack in their warm-up match – with captain Keaton Jennings dropping to No.3 to hit five sixes in his 92, his highest score since his century on Test debut in Mumbai last year. That always seemed likely to prove too much for Worcestershire, who are in the UAE for their pre-season preparations and accepted a late opportunity to replace Afghanistan as the North’s warm-up opposition – and despite an opening stand of 128 in 20 overs between Daryl Mitchell (89) and Brett D’Oliveira (65), and defiant lower-order half centuries by Ed Barnard and new captain Joe Leach, they were all out for 345 in the 49th over. The first five wickets fell to the North spinners – Graeme White, Liam Livingstone and Josh Poysden, who ended with three for 42 – before Mark Wood returned after a tidy three-over opening spell to take his first wicket of the year, in an encouraging comeback after his ankle operation last autumn. The South seemed set for more of a struggle on the adjoining oval against the UAE, who made 343 for 9 from their 50 overs with centuries from Rohan Mustafa and Shaiman Anwar. But Dawid Malan, fresh from his triumph in the Pakistan Super League, laid a sound platform with 79 from 71 balls, sharing a second-wicket stand of exactly 100 with Vince – who went on to make an unbeaten 125 from 85 balls with 14 fours and four sixes before retiring to give the South’s middle-order some time at the crease.Mark Wood was making his comeback after ankle surgery•Getty Images

They won by five wickets with 10 balls to spare, with handy contributions from Sam Northeast and Tom Alsop, after Daniel Bell-Drummond had made 37 in an opening stand of 81 with Malan.Neither game had List A status, but both Vince and Duckett look ready to stake their claims for an England white-ball recall in the North-South Series – which will be watched by England head coach Trevor Bayliss and all three selectors.Vince, who turned 26 on Tuesday, was batting for the first time since his farewell appearance for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash on January 18, while Duckett looked in good touch throughout England Lions’ one-day series in Sri Lanka but was frustrated to be restricted to a single half century. The serious business begins on Friday in the grander surroundings of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, which will stage the first two matches of the series before it concludes in Abu Dhabi next Tuesday.Tom Curran, the only member of either 13-man squad not to take part in the warm-up matches because of a stiff back, is confident of being available for selection to the South’s coach Paul Farbrace.

Liverpool Eye Swoop For £51m Serie A "Treasure"

Liverpool have already made two signings this summer following a disappointing campaign last season and now a new update has emerged on another potential transfer target.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Federico Chiesa?

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are monitoring Federico Chiesa's situation at Juventus.

As per the report, the Reds are joined in their by Newcastle United who are also keen on snapping up the services of the versatile winger this summer.

It is claimed that Chiesa could be one of the players moved on due to being ill-suited to Max Allegri's tactical philosophy of a 3-5-2 system.

Have Liverpool made a bid for Chiesa?

It was reported last month that Liverpool were preparing a €40m (£34.4m) bid for the Serie A star – dubbed a "treasure" by Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio – however, they are yet to make a concrete move for the player with Juventus commanding a fee of €60m (£51m).

Some of the Reds returned to pre-season training on Saturday alongside Jurgen Klopp who was in high spirits ahead of his preparations for next season and will be hoping that the business done this summer will be enough to improve upon the fall from grace Liverpool experienced over their last campaign.

Whilst a midfield rebuild has been the top priority so far with the signing of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, the Merseyside giants could now look to other key areas of the pitch to add depth and much-needed quality.

As a result, the signing of Chiesa could be a great opportunity for Klopp to land his dream Mohamed Salah heir, with the 31-year-old winger set to enter the last two years of his extended contract when football resumes next month.

Chiesa has been subjected to huge praise over his career so far, with former Azzurri striker Antonio Di Natale hailing his influential impact on Italy's Euro 2020 campaign:

"He is a player I like a lot because he is unpredictable. He goes right, left, and makes some fakes. You never know where he’s going.

"Already in his first season in Turin he showed what he is worth. And at Euro 2020, he’s confirming his talent with some great plays and goals."

Whilst the Euro 2020 winner is most prolific as an inverted right-winger – just like Salah – scoring 32 goals and registering 13 assists over 92 appearances in the position, he was utilised in a range of roles including left-wing, wing-back and second striker last season to fit Allegri's system with four goals and six assists delivered.

federico-chiesa-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

When comparing the Italy international's output over the last 12 months to his Liverpool positional peer, Chiesa offered more assists per 90 (0.42) compared to Salah's (0.32), as well as outperforming the Egyptian in shot-creating actions per 90 (4.10 v 3.75), progressive carries (4.52 v 3.31) and successful take-ons (2.26 v 1.36), demonstrating stronger attributes in ball-winning and challenging opponents successfully.

With that being said, if Liverpool could get a deal for Chiesa this summer then it would be a major coup for the club and get Klopp ahead in his challenge to build the next generation of success at Anfield.

Resignation had nothing to do with BCCI-ICC issues – Manohar

Shashank Manohar has said that any differences he might have had with the BCCI had no bearing on his decision to step down as ICC chairman

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Mar-2017Shashank Manohar has said that any differences he might have had with the BCCI had no bearing on his decision to step down as ICC chairman.Manohar revealed he had made that clear to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), which is presently running the BCCI, when he met them in Mumbai a day before he resigned: he told them he had already made up his mind.”It has nothing to do with the ICC functioning or these issues which are going to come up,” he told ESPNcricinfo from Nagpur. Manohar, however, did not elaborate on why he had stepped down. “Personal reason means genuinely personal. And I don’t lie.”Manohar said he would not reconsider his decision.Differences between Manohar and the Big Three emerged soon after he became BCCI president in November 2015, when he equated the finance and governance model designed in 2014 to concentrate power in the hands of the BCCI, CA and ECB with “bullying”.After being elected as the ICC’s first independent chairman in May 2016, Manohar made it a priority to revoke the Big Three model. The BCCI responded by saying Manohar was going against the body that had put him at the helm of ICC in the first place. It also objected strongly when Manohar wanted the BCCI’s share of ICC revenue cut from 20.60% to about 16%.However, in the revised revenue distribution model worked out by the ICC and approved in principle during its meetings in February, the BCCI’s share was further reduced to 10-10.2%: a cut of $180-190 million.Despite resistance from the BCCI, the ICC board voted in favour of accepting the draft constitution prepared by a five-member group led by Manohar. Only two boards had voted against it – the BCCI and SLC, while Zimbabwe Cricket abstained. The BCCI had been represented at that ICC meeting by Vikram Limaye, who is a member of the CoA. Limaye had questioned the logic behind the new revenue distribution model, saying the methods used to arrive at such a break-up weren’t scientific.Manohar, however, backed the new model during his meeting with CoA members Limaye and Vinod Rai in Mumbai on Tuesday. “It was a very good, constructive meeting,” Manohar said. “I will maintain even today that there cannot be a scientific formula.”The meeting was called by both parties to try and reach a solution that would enable the new constitution to be passed at the ICC board meetings in Dubai in April. An official privy to the details indicated that both parties seemed to have worked out a figure that was higher than the one discussed in February.Manohar said he had revealed to the COA that he was going to leave the ICC. “I told them before the meeting started that I had discussed my resignation with my wife yesterday only, and I am likely to resign. I have a message from the COA today that yesterday you told us that you were going to resign, but we were surprised. We never thought you were so serious.”In a statement following Manohar’s resignation, the BCCI expressed its “surprise” at the “sudden decision”. “Mr. Manohar’s contribution to Indian cricket is invaluable. He is a man of few words but excellent deeds. The BCCI Committee of Administrators (CoA) was looking forward to a long-term cooperation between the ICC and BCCI with Mr. Manohar at the helm of affairs.”Manohar said he could not have revealed his decision earlier to the ICC. “Most of the directors would not have allowed me not to resign.”He said he was happy with the work he had managed to accomplish during his eight-month tenure, and that he could not say whether he had disappointed the ICC board by leaving at this critical juncture.
