Mathews steps down as Sri Lanka captain

Angelo Mathews has stepped down as Sri Lanka captain in all three formats

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-20170:55

Quick Facts – Mathews as captain

Angelo Mathews has stepped down as Sri Lanka captain in all three formats, following his side’s 3-2 ODI series loss to Zimbabwe. Mathews, who called the defeat “one of the lowest points” of his career and said in its aftermath that he would discuss his captaincy future with the SLC selectors, conveyed his decision to the selectors on Tuesday.Mathews has led Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, 98 ODIs and 12 T20Is, having taken the reins at the age of 25, in 2013. Though Sri Lanka have been modest in limited-overs cricket through the latter half of his tenure, they have, on his watch, tasted rare success in the Test format. In 2014, Mathews had personally played a pivotal role in the Test series triumph in England. Last year, Sri Lanka had also whitewashed Australia – a side they had won only one Test against previously. There have also been significant lows under Mathews, however. Sri Lanka’s campaigns in the 2015 World Cup, the 2016 World T20 and the 2017 Champions Trophy were disappointing, and even in the Test format, they suffered two 0-2 whitewashes in New Zealand, and a 0-3 result in South Africa. All told, Mathews has 13 Test victories to his name as captain, against 15 losses. On the batting front, Mathews had an outstanding 2014, in which he scored 1,317 runs at an average of 87.8, but his form had since fallen away, though his average as captain still remains 50.94. With the ball, he was only sporadically effective in Tests, but much more valuable a limited-overs bowler. The last year of Mathews’ captaincy was characterised by injury, however. He missed two Tests and an ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe as a result of multiple leg injuries, was absent for a five-match ODI series against South Africa thanks to a torn hamstring, missed Bangladesh’s tour of the island, and was most recently unavailable for Sri Lanka’s Champions Trophy fixture against South Africa – though it is possible he was prevented from playing that game by the board. The injuries have usually come when Mathews has had a high bowling workload, which he has attempted to carefully manage during his captaincy. The announcement that he would resign from the captaincy was not unexpected. The paucity of Sri Lanka’s returns in 2017 had placed substantial pressure on Mathews, and applied fresh scrutiny on his on-field strategising and decision-making, which has largely been seen to be Mathews’ weakest suit as captain. The series loss against Zimbabwe has been particularly chastening to the Sri Lanka team – they had never lost a match to Zimbabwe at home before, let alone a series.Sri Lanka are due to name a successor to Mathews – in the Test format at least – early on Wednesday. Upul Tharanga, who has led the ODI team when Mathews has been injured, and Dinesh Chandimal, who has served as Mathews’ deputy and led the T20 team in the past, are prime candidates. Rangana Herath, who captained the most-recent Sri Lanka Test, may be an option as well.

Inter Milan: Lautaro Martinez Lashes Out At Romelu Lukaku

There was a time in which the strike partnership of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez was one of the best around, as Inter Milan secured the Scudetto under Antonio Conte.

In classic Lukaku style, however, he decided to swap Inter for Chelsea in the summer of 2021, in a move that he has regretted ever since.

Speaking midway through his season back at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku revealed his regret, controversially telling Sky Italia: "The way I left Inter, how I communicated with the fans, it bothers me because it might not be the right time now but it wasn't the right time when I left, either. Now, I think it's right to talk because I have always said I have Inter in my heart. I'll go back to play there, I really hope so."

The Belgian did, at least, manage to reunite with Martinez last season, completing a loan move back to his form club, which many would have assumed could have turned permanent, if he so wished.

That hasn't been the case, however, with Lukaku even attempting to move to Serie A rivals Juventus this summer – which was protested by fans.

Any bridges built at Inter have been burnt to a crisp, including it seems his relationship with Martinez too.

Lautaro Martinez speaks out on Romelu Lukaku situation

Speaking about Lukaku's situation, Martinez told Gazetta, via Fabrizio Romano: “Lukaku saga? I was disappointed by Romelu, it's the truth. I tried to call him in those days of chaos, but he never answered me, the same he did with my other teammates.

“I was disappointed. But ok, well, it’s his choice."

This comes after the Belgian revealed that he missed Martinez back in 2021, saying, via Romano: "I miss Lautaro Martinez, I could die on the pitch for him since day one I met him.

"Lautaro Martinez coming here with me at Chelsea in the future? No… Lautaro, you can stay in Milan, I'll be back there."

The Argentine's future is far simpler than his former strike partner's, meanwhile, revealing his desire to stay put in Milan to Gazetta, reported by Romano: “I received huge bids from Saudi clubs, it’s true. But I’m very happy at Inter and in Milano, no chance and no reason to change.

“I’m the captain here, Inter is my second home. I feel loved here since day one. I’m proud to be here."

What are the latest Romelu Lukaku transfer rumours?

Romelu Lukaku

As of right now, Lukaku remains a Chelsea player, but with plenty of time left in the transfer window, that could soon change.

According to Romano, the forward is attracting plenty of interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, but his priority is to remain in Europe, with Juventus a potential option.

Given Chelsea's summer activity, welcoming both Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, it seems unlikely that Lukaku will have a place under new boss Mauricio Pochettino next season.

As the summer drags on, and he remains without a move, the former Inter Milan man could find himself in an unwanted position come the beginning of the forthcoming campaign at Stamford Bridge.

It's certainly a situation to keep an eye on.

Matt Machan, the Scotland and Sussex batsman, has announced his retirement from professional cricket, at 26, on medical advice.Machan missed half of last season with a wrist injury – described by Sussex’s head coach Mark Davis as a “repetitive” injury” – and an operation last September failed to bring the solution he had anticipated.Machan said: “It is with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce my retirement. Following medical advice, my long-term health is most important to me and I have to take that into account.”I believe as a batsman I was only just starting to come into my own and it is a real shame that this has been cut short so early as I believe I had so much still to offer Sussex over the next few years.”An aggressive left-handed batsman and offbreak bowler, Machan qualified for Scotland through his Scottish mother in 2012 and made an ODI debut against Afghanistan in Sharjah in 2013. He made his maiden international hundred, against Kenya, a few months later and played a part in Scotland’s 2015 World Cup campaign.Sussex’s director of cricket, Keith Greenfield, said: “Matt has been part of Sussex cricket since he was 10 years of age, and it is sad that we will not see Matt continue to develop and deliver his talent on the pitch because of his wrist injury. His passion for the club has always been clear.”

Lehmann calls for help from former players in open letter

In an open letter, Darren Lehmann called on all stakeholders in Australian cricket – most pointedly past great cricketers – for any advice that would help turn around what has been a disappointing year for the national side

Off-field disputes might have made most of the headlines in Australian cricket over the past ten months, but head coach Darren Lehmann is looking to put that firmly behind him. In an open letter, he called on all stakeholders in Australian cricket – most pointedly past great cricketers – for any advice that would help turn around what has been a disappointing year for the national side, and return to “where we belong”.”We as support staff are always looking for ways to improve and welcome any advice from you, so if you have any ideas however ‘out there’ they might be, please reply below,” Lehmann wrote. “Your advice is always helpful. After all, we as players both past and present don’t have all the answers and as support staff we are always looking for the best way to drive us forward in the game.”Addressing the letter to the “past and current players and members of CA and ACA”, Lehmann did not shirk away from acknowledging results weren’t “as we would have liked” in the past year, but also mounted a staunch defence of his players’ training, work ethic and desire. He sought to dispel “misconceptions” that fast bowlers didn’t bowl enough, saying that their training regimen ensured that was “not the case at the highest level”.While much of the content of the letter reads like a fairly standard case of a coach defending his beleaguered team against what he felt was unwarranted criticism, it is the repeated invitation to past players to get more involved with everyday preparations that stands out.”It was only 12 months ago we were number 1 in Tests and One Dayers and for us to get back there it will only happen with all of us going in the one direction and supporting Australian cricket. If at any point you would like to come into the change rooms or to come along to training and see how we do things and prepare, please let us know and we can facilitate the process. The players and staff love seeing you guys around and taking through the game you played.”The recent pay dispute that brought Australian cricket to a standstill was resolved ahead of a key period for Australian cricket. A two-Test series in Bangladesh begins on August 27, before the side heads off for a limited-overs tour of India. That is followed by an Ashes series and a full tour of South Africa which concludes in March 2018.

Aston Villa: Midlands Club Still Interested In "Incredible" 24 y/o

Aston Villa are still among the chasing pack to sign Galatasaray midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo this summer, according to reports.

The Italian would be the Villans' fourth signing of the current transfer window, if he made the move to Villa Park.

What's the latest on Nicolo Zaniolo to Aston Villa?

Zaniolo has been linked with a move away from Galatasaray for the majority of the summer, with Aston Villa consistently among the clubs reportedly interested. And, now, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, via Sport Witness, Villa, alongside Bayer Leverkusen, are leading the way in the chase for the Italian's signature.

The Italian outlet have reported that Galatasaray will clarify Zaniolo's future as soon as possible, amid offers from around Europe, and in Saudi Arabia, with the Villans showing particularly strong interest.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are also reportedly keeping an eye on the midfielder as another option this summer.

It remains to be seen just how much Galatasaray will ask for Zaniolo in the coming weeks, but Villa have shown that they are more than happy to spend big in recent months, splashing out to welcome Moussa Diaby for a reported £51.9m whilst also signing Pau Torres for a reported £31.5m.

With that said, if the Premier League side increase their interest, it may be one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Should Aston Villa sign Nicolo Zaniolo?

Nicolo Zaniolo, attacking midfielder, Galatasaray

As Unai Emery's side gear up to juggle commitments in both the Premier League and the Europa Conference League, adding depth to their midfield wouldn't exactly be a bad thing.

Zaniolo would arrive with plenty of experience, too, despite being just 24-years-old. The midfielder was a permanent fixture at AS Roma for three seasons, before making the move to Galatasaray last season. Whilst in Turkey, he has found his best form, scoring five goals in just ten appearances in the Super Lig.

Such is his talent, Zaniolo has earned plenty of praise throughout his career, with journalist Zach Lowy saying back in 2019 on Twitter: "Nicolò Zaniolo (19). Fast, diligent & physically imposing, Zaniolo is superb in all defensive assets, from pressing to tracking back. With a deadly left foot & top vision, he’s a lethal playmaker. Without a doubt, the crown jewel of Monchi’s otherwise disappointing time at Roma."

Of course, Monchi is now at Villa Park, so could look to repeat his own masterclass regarding the Italy international for a second time.

Meanwhile, in the highest praise that he has received, Roma legend Daniele De Rossi said back in 2019, via the official club website: “He has an incredible natural physique for someone who is only 19 and also has great technical quality. In my opinion, as perhaps with everyone now, he is already a very good player – and can become a great one.”

When a player earns such praise from an iconic midfielder, it is clear that they have plenty of talent.

With that said, Villa, next to Leverkusen in pole position, must make a decision regarding their pursuit of Zaniolo. If they push ahead and secure his signature, Emery will have welcomed four big marquee reinforcements this summer, as his side look to cause a few shocks in the coming months.

Everton Target Wilfried Gnonto Now On Strike At Leeds

Everton have been boosted by the news that rumoured transfer target Wilfried Gnonto is refusing to play for Leeds United, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared everything he knows on the situation.

Will Everton sign Wilfried Gnonto?

The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the Blues' main transfer targets this summer, having caught the eye for the Whites last season. He often looked like providing a piece of magic when others were unable to, although he was unable to keep his side in the Premier League.

Since Leeds' relegation, it hasn't been a surprise to see Gnonto regularly linked with a move away, with the Italy international no doubt hesitant to potentially waste a year of his career playing in the Championship. There has always been a chance that he remains at Elland Road and helps them secure a quickfire promotion, but it has become increasingly clear that he wants a move away.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

Everton's interest in the winger certainly doesn't appear to have gone away of late, as they look to bring in a number of new signings in attack, in order to revitalise an ailing area of the pitch.

Now, a new update has emerged – one that suggests that situation could become increasingly messy as the summer goes on.

What's the latest on Wilfried Gnonto to Everton?

Taking to Twitter, Romano provided a dramatic update regarding Gnonto's current situation at Leeds, confirming that he has essentially gone on strike, as he looks to push through a summer exit from his current club:

"The relationship between Willy Gnonto and Leeds is completely broken now. He’s not willing to play at Birmingham tomorrow, he hasn’t travelled and he wants to leave. Already agreed terms with Everton. Leeds insist on their position: not for sale."

In truth, Gnonto refusing to play isn't necessarily a great look for him, but it does act as a positive for Everton, suggesting that Leeds could end up feeling forced to sell him. At the moment, they are clearly digging their heels in and being stubborn, but ultimately, keeping hold of an unhappy player and losing out on a pay day can end up being a hindrance.

The fact that terms have already been agreed with the Blues shows how far along a possible move to Goodison Park is, but it remains to seen just how forceful Leeds continue to be in their stance, and whether Gnonto ends up having to accept staying put.

If Everton can strike a deal in the coming days and weeks, it would be such an exciting piece of business, considering the Italy starlet has been lauded as a "special" footballer by Whites coach Michael Skubala in the recent past.

At just 19, Gnonto has already shone on the international stage for a huge footballing country, winning 12 caps and scoring once, and there is a fearlessness and unpredictability about him on the pitch that make him such an eye-catching attacking player.

If he can continue to mature as a player, his ceiling is incredibly high, and the hope is that Sean Dyche ends up being the manager tasked with getting the best out of him this summer and beyond.

Herath can adjust, counter plans against him – Azhar

Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali admitted that the relative inexperience of the batting line-up was also a factor in their failure to chase down 136 on the final day in Abu Dhabi

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Oct-20171:23

Herath was always going to be a threat – Misbah

The only series in recent memory when Pakistan negated the threat of Rangana Herath effectively was in 2015 when the Sri Lanka left-arm spinner managed only two wickets in two home Tests, a success which came about after a specific plan against the bowler. In the wake of Pakistan’s defeat in Abu Dhabi, however, Azhar Ali admitted that conditions in the UAE and the relative inexperience in the batting line-up were also factors in the shock collapse against Herath, who took 6 for 43 in Sri Lanka’s defence of 135.”Well those were different conditions,” Azhar told reporters on Wednesday. “Obviously we had plans against him but these are different conditions. This is a new team, so some of them were playing him for the first time. Still I have got out six [nine] times to him. He is a great bowler and we have played a lot against him. Sometimes, we dominate him and the other times he dominates us. This goes on, he is a great bowler and has not got 400 wickets without a reason. When you have a plan, then he too adjusts in a different manner and encounters that plan. We had a plan like we did in 2015 when he got fewer wickets, but unfortunately he did better than us [here].”Herath became the first left-arm spinner to take 400 Test wickets, and finished with a match haul of eleven dismissals in Abu Dhabi. He also became the first bowler to take 100 wickets in the format against Pakistan and has also dismissed Azhar nine times in 12 Tests.Pakistan’s fifth-day collapse in Abu Dhabi also highlighted the side’s vulnerability in a situation faced with a fourth-innings chase. Azhar admitted the team had the ability to chase down 136 against Sri Lanka but also pointed to the fact that the batsmen should have taken more responsibility in helping Pakistan take a lead larger than the three runs they had managed. Azhar himself scored 85 in the first innings but managed only a duck in the second.”Definitely we are disappointed, and this is not the first time,” he said. “Teams stage comebacks, we did not have much to chase but it’s not easy to bat on the last day. We had the ability to chase that target. Unfortunately we lost early wickets and could not recover, so there are lessons to be learnt which we will learn. Had one [batsman] played a big knock in the first innings, we would have got a bigger lead. Had we done that, things would not have been like this. So the biggest lesson is that when we have things under control we should utilise that to the maximum.”The Abu Dhabi Test also saw Azhar return to the No. 3 position for the first time since August 2016, after a prolific stint opening the batting for Pakistan. In 12 Tests since August last year, Azhar scored 1325 runs opening the batting, at an average of 63.09 with four hundreds and five fifties including a triple-hundred against West Indies in the UAE last year and an unbeaten 205 against Australia in Melbourne.Azhar backed the team management’s decision to play him at No.3, particularly as Pakistan now look to piece together a new middle-order core following the retirements of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan earlier this year.”I think it was a team decision and I back it. When I went to open the innings, that was also team’s requirement,” he said. “This because two of our players who had been performing were not there, we had to change the combination. They need me at No. 3 to adjust the middle order.”
