Newcastle United Join Race To Sign "Phenomenal" Target

In the space of a year, Newcastle United have gone from a side associated with relegation battles to a side capable of competing at the very top of the Premier League, resulting in Champions League qualification last season.

Plenty of that improvement has been down to their impressive recruitment, splashing their new-found riches following their takeover by a Saudi-led consortium in October of 2021.

Eddie Howe has put the money to good use once again this summer, too, by welcoming the likes of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes in recent months.

Now, the Magpies have reportedly joined the race for another potential attacking reinforcement before the summer transfer window slams shut in just a matter of days.

What's the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

So far this summer, Newcastle have welcomed a total of five new arrivals, such as Tonali, Barnes, and most recently, Lewis Hall.

Howe and co have enjoyed a summer window as they look to make it back-to-back top-four finishes in the Premier League this season. Now, as the transfer window edges closer and closer to slamming shut, Newcastle could bring one more reinforcement through the door at St James' Park.

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, via TEAMtalk, the Magpies have joined the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested in the youngster, who could cost around £30m.

Both Spurs and Newcastle reportedly made a first move by sending scouts to watch Bakayoko in PSV's recent 2-2 draw against Rangers in the Champions League play-offs, and will do the same for the return leg, which takes place on Wednesday.

Should Newcastle United sign Johan Bakayoko?

johan-bakayoko-everton

Having built the foundations for immediate success, Newcastle would be doing themselves no harm by beginning to think about the future. And that could start with the signing of Bakayoko. There's a reason why the Belgian has attracted so much interest this summer, with the statistics speaking for themselves.

According to FBref, Bakayoko is in the top 99 percentile for progressive carries, with 7.22 per 90, the top 95 percentile for successful take-ons, making 3.07 per 90, and the top 91 percentile for shot-creating actions, with 4.97 per 90. And this is all at just 20 years of age.

So far this season, the winger has made further strides towards success, too, with four assists in six games, only increasing the interest in his immediate future around Europe.

At his best, Bakayoko has earned plenty of deserved praise, including from his agent, Gerard Witters, who told Het Nieuwsblad, via Goal:

"At the beginning of 2021, Johan was not doing well. But after he got his new contract, everything changed.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

"He started to boost his stats and his recent games were phenomenal. The club has told me that Johan is already better than they initially thought he would be.

"Before he sometimes played like a crazy dog. He had great qualities and was very explosive, but he produced poor crosses and took shots when they were not the best option.

"Now he knows a lot more what he's going to do and defenders can't stop him anymore, despite the fact that he always does the same movement (cutting inside)."

Marsh emulates father in breakthrough moment

The Ashes is proving memorable for the Marsh brothers, who both had reason to fear for their future before the Australian summer began

Daniel Brettig in Perth16-Dec-20172:13

Vaughan: Credit to selectors for timing of Marsh’s recall

Behind the bar in the Marsh family home there is a photo of Geoff walking off Trent Bridge with Mark Taylor after the opening pair batted all day for Australia against England on the triumphant 1989 Ashes tour.Twenty-eight years later in Perth, Australia did lose a wicket, but the exit of Shaun Marsh opened the way for Mitchell Marsh’s breakthrough innings opposite the captain Steven Smith, with the Marsh family present in the middle throughout. As far as scripts are concerned, the family and the WACA could not have found a better one.”It’s pretty special,” Marsh said. “Dad always had a photo of him and Mark Taylor walking off the ground with the scorecard in his bar, so I grew up looking at that photo. Today was just a great day for Australia, to only lose one wicket for the whole day has really put us in a strong position now.”[This series] was more special for Shaun because two months ago he didn’t really think he was ever going to play for Australia again. I remember sitting at his house when he was selected, we were having a cold beer together and he was pretty emotional. For him to do what he’s done for Australia now just goes to show you can’t ever give up, he’s in great form and hopefully he can hold his spot down for a long time now.”Mitchell Marsh’s journey to this innings had begun with a shoulder injury that not only forced surgery but gave him time to concentrate solely on his batting. With the help of Scott Meuleman, who spoke to ESPNcricinfo about their work together, Marsh tightened his game considerably and has emerged as a greatly improved batsman, just as the selectors had asked of him.”I certainly had moments throughout my shoulder rehab where I thought maybe I wasn’t going to get back,” Marsh said of his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery, “because it takes a long time and as an athlete whenever you’re out it’s all about getting back as soon as you can and you have frustrating moments, but it’s certainly all worth it now.”I felt like [reward for] my hard work in the off-season started with my first game for WA. I felt like my game had changed from the last time I played cricket for Australia. That’s a great feeling, it’s an amazing feeling right now to have a Test century under my belt after eight months of hard work. Scott’s really changed the way I play and changed the way I think about the game, and he’s been unbelievable for me.”I’ve always said, the selectors and Steve said that if I’m going to be playing cricket for Australia I have to be the sixth best batsman and be a No. 6 batsman and my bowling’s a bonus. I’ve worked extremely hard on my batting, and that was the one area that was going to keep me out of the Australian team and I’m just really glad I’ve taken the opportunity.”At the moment Marsh reached his hundred he celebrated with a raw and unconfined gusto that underlined all that it meant, and revealed that his mind had been so much at ease in the middle that he had not been enveloped with the usual 90s nerves.”I think everyone says it, but it really was just pure elation,” Marsh said. “I didn’t really feel too nervous in the 90s, it was almost a bit of a weird feeling when I got in there. Any time you’re in the 90s as a batsman you can’t help but not think about making a hundred. I just tried to focus on watching the ball as hard as I could. I don’t really remember too much about the celebration, I’m certainly not a jumper, don’t have too many springs in my step, so I just went for the first pump, I think.”That, though, was not the whole job. Marsh and Smith accelerated after tea but then throttled back notably in the final half an hour. They clearly wanted to preserve their wickets to drive further at England on day four.”Once we got to the 10-over mark I wanted to make sure Painey didn’t have to come out and bat after having the pads on all day,” Marsh said. “I think we’re 130 ahead right now and to go into tomorrow only four down puts us in a really great position to put our foot on their throat.”Before the foot is placed there, however, there was one more nicely serendipitous part of the Marsh day – a barbecue at the family home. Both Shaun and Mitch have now got Test scores to top the 138 Geoff made at Trent Bridge. “I’ll let dad know,” Mitchell said with a smile, “that I passed him.”

CINCO CASOS EXTERNADOS HOJE

Hazlewood out of Brisbane ODI with virus

Jhye Richardson is a step closer to making his ODI debut with Josh Hazlewood laid low by a virus

Australia’s fast bowling plans for the ODI series against England have been thrown out by a virus afflicting Josh Hazlewood, meaning he is unavailable for the Brisbane game on Friday. Hazlewood’s unavailability places Jhye Richardson in line to debut.Having been rested from the first ODI on Sunday, Hazlewood was meant to have rejoined the squad at the Gabba with Pat Cummins to spend some time at home in Sydney after playing at the MCG.While Cummins is still resting, Hazlewood’s illness leaves the Australians with only 12 players to choose from. Richardson, who played two Twenty20 matches for Australia against Sri Lanka last summer, is likely to come into the side as a result.Hazlewood’s virus maintains a pattern of illness that has affected numerous members of both the Australia and England squads since the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Cummins was the first player to be affected, with Tim Paine, David Warner and Steven Smith all subsequently ill among the hosts. In the opposition camp, England captain Joe Root and top-order batsman James Vince have also been stricken while on tour.”We’ve seen it all through the summer from both sides, there’s been quite a lot of illness, which is strange,” opener Aaron Finch said. “While Josh has gone down – Patty and Steve during the Test match – does cause a bit of angst among the group. It causes a bit of separation. Guys don’t want to hang around with each other in case they’re spreading it on, but the guys that are there to come in and potentially take their spot if they need are in great form as well.”Paine is still feeling the effects of his illness, forcing the selectors to call up the South Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey as cover.”Alex Carey, who will be on standby, just got a beautiful hundred last night,” Finch said. “He’s taken his game to another level. He showed a lot of promise in Shield cricket over the last couple of years, and then to come out this year, when there was a lot of talk about the Ashes ‘keeping spot, and who was going to play… The way that he put his hand up and has continued to do so for such a young guy is really impressive.”Richardson, clocked at speeds of up to 149 kph over the past year, has said he will be ready to fulfil whatever role Smith requires.”That’s something we have to sum up when we play,” he said before the Melbourne game. “I could come in and need to play a different role than being the impact bowler. I could have to come in and try to tie up an end during a period where they’re going really well. I’m ready for whatever challenge pops up. If I do get to play and I need to come in and do a particular job, then I’m ready for it.”You have to be quite disciplined, you’ve got 60 balls, not 24. In the Big Bash, you can go for a few boundaries but one dot ball out of 24 is [more important] than one out of 60. But having said that, if you go to the boundary more often in a one-day game, you’ve got 60 balls to do that, so you’ve got to be quite a lot more disciplined in the sense that you’ve got a lot more balls to bowl, a lot more good balls.”It’s not all about pace, we get told that quite early. Especially at this level, you can bowl as fast as you want but if you’re not bowling well it goes to the boundary just as quick.”

West Ham: Moyes Could Repeat Payet Success In £34m Deadline Day Raid

West Ham United are in for a dramatic deadline day, as David Moyes revises his options ahead of the close of the transfer window tonight.

The Irons have recruited well so far this summer following the £105m sale of Declan Rice, however another target has emerged in the bid to bolster the side further.

Who could West Ham sign on deadline day?

After the audacious capture of Mohammed Kudus from Ajax, Moyes significantly strengthened his attack, however it looks as though the east Londoners are poaching another forward.

As reported by the Daily Mail, West Ham are considering a move for Paris Saint Germain starlet Hugo Ekitike, who is said to be valued by the Parisians at €40m (£34m).

Moyes was asked specifically about the Frenchman when quizzed by the media ahead of deadline day, in which he responded: “You wouldn't get me commenting on a player from another club.”

How good is Hugo Ekitike?

Having been tipped to become a “star” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Ekitike is one of the most noticeable young forwards in Ligue 1.

Prior to his move to PSG, the 21-year-old gem netted 10 league goals for Stade Reims, as well as registering four assists in an impressive individual campaign in the French top-flight, in a season that marked his breakthrough.

Considering the talent and lucrative ambitions of PSG, it was always going to be difficult for the youngster to make a statement in the capital due to there being little guarantee of his game time.

Putting this aside, the striker needed little time to show his worth, contributing to seven goals in 25 appearances for the Parisians, scoring three and assisting four in only 12 league starts and an average of 46 minutes per game, via Sofascore.

Paris St Germain'sHugoEkitikebefore the match

For West Ham, hiring talent from the French league has proven to be a strong move in the past, take last summer's swoop for Lucas Paqueta from Olympique Lyonnais.

On a whole other level to the Brazilian – in terms of successful moves from France – is Dimitri Payet, who almost single-handedly fired the Hammers to a seventh-place finish in his debut campaign.

The Frenchman netted nine goals and registered 12 assists in his first season in east London, asserting himself as Slaven Bilic’s star man and West Ham’s saviour on many occasions.

During his time in the capital, the midfielder was dubbed a “special player” by his teammate at the time Winston Reid, and ultimately showed just how vital a strong signing can be in the window.

In exploring a deal for Ekitike, who has been lauded as a "complete" and "clinical finisher" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Moyes could repeat history in handing the Hammers another star from Ligue 1.

Like Payet before his move, all the signs are there for the youngster to become an important part of the scenery at West Ham, with the Frenchman showing his lively spark through his 1.4 shots per game last term.

In the season prior to his transfer to the Irons, Payet averaged two shots per game for Marseille, communicating the similarities to their impact and importance in attack.

At only 21 years of age, Moyes could hand Ekitike a starring role at the London Stadium, in the hope that the Frenchman could thrive and follow suit in being another hit signing from France’s top-tier.

Tottenham: Ange has "convinced" an "absolute unit" to sign for Spurs

A report this week has shed light on Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou's growing influence as transfer news comes out of Spurs.

Who have Tottenham signed this summer?

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy, before the arrival of Chief Football Officer Scott Munn, moved to bring in seven major summer signings after appointing Postecoglou in June.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, midfielder James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, striker Alejo Veliz and forward Brennan Johnson all put pen to paper on moves to north London before the September 1 deadline.

Meanwhile. former superstar striker Harry Kane, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Harry Winks, Alfie Devine, Troy Parrott, Dane Scarlett, Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele all moved elsewhere either on loan or permanently.

Postecoglou's new-look Premier League squad has taken some shape and reports in the past fortnight have suggested they're setting January plans in motion already.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Tottenham were reported to be after a second centre-back over the summer, coming after their signing of van de Ven, but a late move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly ultimately failed to materialise.

It is claimed that the north Londoners will be back in for Kelly this winter, while journalist Dean Jones has also said that will sign an out-and-out replacement for Kane "once we get to 2024".

"I don't know what they will look for in a Kane replacement, but they would be silly not to be looking at Ferguson right now," said Jones to GiveMeSport this week.

"I know Manchester United have had an eye on Ferguson. I'm sure Chelsea will, too, given their recruitment policy. But Tottenham have to as well.

"They're going to have to sign another striker eventually. Son is good for now. With Richarlison, everything’s up in the air. They will sign a new striker once we get to 2024."

It will be interesting to see who Spurs bring through the door next year, but according to recent reports, they've already made an out-of-window signing.

Indeed, Croatian defensive starlet Luka Vuskovic has apparently signed for Tottenham with journalist Fabrizio Romano giving his famous "here we go" to the move.

Ange Postecoglou

The 16-year-old, who is an extremely highly-rated young defender from Hadjuk Split, is set to make the move to N17 in 2025 once he turns 18.

Called an "absolute unit" for his age by members of the English press, Vuskovic has also been billed as a "really exciting" capture by The Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella.

Now, a report by Italian media outlet Calciomercato has shed some light on his transfer, with Spurs boss Postecoglou playing a huge role.

It is believed the 58-year-old personally "convinced" Vuskovic to join Tottenham, who they say will be the "next big signing for Spurs".

The club beat Man City, Paris-Saint Germain and AC Milan to his signature, according to this report; highlighting Postecoglou's growing influence both on and off the field.

Vuskovic will apparently cost around £12.5 million, making him Hadjuk Split's most expensive transfer of all time ahead of former record holder Nikola Vlasic.

Postecoglou has been a long time fan of the player, apparently, and even had his eye on the defender during his Celtic tenure.
