Uncertainty over GLT20 continues as CSA rejects new model

A new deadline of March 31 has been set to decide the stalled tournament’s future

Cricket South Africa President Chris Nenzani speaks at the inaugural player draft of the T20 Global League•T20 Global League

A proposal to re-launch a drastically reimagined T20 Global League – as a CSA-owned tournament – was rejected by the Cricket South Africa Members’ Council at the organisation’s board meeting in Durban last weekend. A new deadline of March 31 has been set to decide the stalled tournament’s future. The rejected plan, seen by ESPNcricinfo, had proposed the GLT20 be transformed from an IPL-style league to a model similar to the BBL, where the eight teams would be owned and run by CSA and not private owners. The plan included capping the number of foreign players per squad at three, and with only two in each starting XI. Significantly, each team had to adhere to strict transformation targets, to pick five players of colour, including at least two black Africans, in their starting XI. Such a league was set to cost CSA 180 million rand for the first three years, after which it was set to turn a profit. The model would also have had far-reaching effects on the current domestic structure, resulting in the scrapping of the franchise T20 competition – last season called the Ram Slam – and the relegation of the one-day cup to a “non-consumer facing product”. That would mean no List A matches being televised; as it is, only a select number of 50-over games are broadcast and no first-class games. The further diminishing of the domestic game is believed to be one of the reasons the Members’ Council – CSA’s decision-making body made up of the 12 provincial presidents – did not agree to the new model for the GLT20.”The franchises have sponsors and for them, cricket still brings in some form of revenue,” an official familiar with the situation told ESPNcricinfo. “Without any televised games, they would have no product to sell. And all that would be left is for them to go cap in hand to CSA and ask for money all the time.”CSA already provides financial assistance to the existing six franchises and 12 provinces, who struggle to generate their own profits but fear that a new 20-over tournament will crowd them out of the picture. With the U-19 team and South Africa A side already seen as more of a stepping stone to the national team than the franchise system, administrators are concerned that domestic cricket will be left to wither away. “There will be a concentration of control and money and power at national level, but domestic development will suffer,” the official said. While CSA’s proposal acknowledged that, “none of our franchises will break-even financially without subsidies from CSA and the Members,” it used that as a reason to emphasise the need for a cost-effective GLT20. It acknowledged that the initial proposal, pushed by former CEO Haroon Lorgat, “over-focused on making money without testing how value was going to be created for all involved, attracting players, and providing playing opportunities.”The Members’ Council’s reasons for rejecting the proposal are not yet known. Instead, the CSA board appointed a task team to come up with another new business model, but the board’s acting CEO is doubtful it will be able to come up with a satisfactory solution by the end of next month.”I don’t think we have enough time to pull it off‚” CSA’s acting CEO Thabang Moroe told journalists in Johannesburg last week. Unusually, the briefing was not open to all media and sidelined several mainstream publications. ESPNcricinfo contacted Moroe for comment, but he declined to do so.

Morkel becomes fifth South African to 300 Test wickets

The fast bowler took the wickets of Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith and Shaun Marsh on the second day at Newlands to reach the milestone in his 85th Test

Morne Morkel has become the fifth South African bowler to 300 Test wickets, after taking three wickets on the second day of the Newlands Test against Australia. Morkel’s milestone came up in his 85th Test; at tea, his tally stood at 300 at an average of 28.07, in his final series as an international cricketer.Morkel will retire at the end of the ongoing series, and there is no guarantee he will feature in the fourth Test which has only made reaching the landmark all the more important. He was dropped for the second Test at St George’s Park after a poor start in Durban, where he took three wickets but bowled better as the match went on, and is competing with Lungi Ngidi for a place in the starting XI.Morkel may not even have played at Newlands, but Ngidi suffered a toe injury, which allowed the lanky quick the opportunity for a farewell in the city he has called home for the last three years. Morkel moved from Pretoria to Cape Town in 2015, and though he does not play for the Cobras domestic franchise, with no fixture at SuperSport Park, Newlands is the closest he will get to a home goodbye. And he made sure it will be one to remember.Bowling first change, Morkel replaced Vernon Philander shortly before lunch and took a wicket with his third ball. The Wynberg End offered extra bounce and Morkel found some immediately; Usman Khawaja had not made allowance for the lift and pulled straight to Kagiso Rabada at fine leg to send Australia into the break at 67 for 2.Morkel continued after the interval and in his second over after lunch got the big fish. Australian captain Steven Smith was also undone by extra bounce and fended a catch to Dean Elgar at gully, to be dismissed for 5 and become Morkel’s 299th victim. Then came a wait for Morkel. He bowled four more overs in that spell without adding to his wicket tally, before returning for a new spell and striking with his third ball. Shaun Marsh chased a wide ball and nicked off to Quinton de Kock, prompting animated celebrations from the usually reserved Morkel. He screamed in delight before acknowledging an appreciative crowd. Among those cheering him on was his wife, the Australian journalist Roz Kelly, and their two-year-old son Arias.

Southampton: Poch flop bled the Saints dry of £25m, then left for £0

Southampton are well-known for churning out talent from their academy setup and selling them on for huge profits in the future.

James Ward-Prowse is the most recent of those to have demonstrated the quality being produced from the Saints' academy having followed in the footsteps of the likes of Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott and five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Gareth Bale.

While the relentless production of talent coming from their academy is impressive – as emphasised this season through 17-year-old Samuel Amo-Ameyaw being rewarded with a chance in the first team – Southampton have also become renowned for signing young players at comparatively small fees and nurturing their development before selling at a significant profit.

The most blatant example of that fact was their £13m acquisition of Virgil van Dijk from Celtic in 2015 with the Dutchman quickly rising to prominence as one of the best defenders in the league, as the Saints pocketed a hefty £75m from Liverpool two and a half years later.

In 2022, Ralph Hasenhuttl unearthed a gem from Manchester City as Romeo Lavia joined the club for £10.5m and although the South Coast club were relegated from the Premier League, Lavia's impressive performances earned him a £58m move to Chelsea this summer, making them a cool £48m on their investment.

Southampton are experts when it comes to signing young players for a cheap and turning a huge profit, but have buckled under the pressure of spending big money on more experienced talents, wasting millions on Dani Osvaldo, who demonstrated that the Saints haven't always been smart with their business.

How much did Southampton pay for Dani Osvaldo?

During Mauricio Pochettino's tenure at the club, the Argentine was in desperate need of a striker to help them become more ruthless in front of goal and after managing him at Espanyol, where he chalked up 20 goals in 45 appearances, Pochettino decided to break the bank to lure Osvaldo to the Premier League.

Joining from Roma for a club record fee of £15m in 2013, the Italian promised to live up to the price tag having amassed an eye-watering 34 goal contributions in 55 appearances in the Serie A.

Despite his impressive rate of scoring, Roma's coach at the time, Rudi Garcia, questioned Osvaldo's attitude during a friendly with Turkish side Bursaspor in 2013, stating that the 27-year-old's behaviour would cause serious problems unless he changed his attitude.

He said: “He is a great striker, but his personality is a serious issue.

“[For instance], in my opinion, he shouldn’t have reacted to the fans’ jeers, although I do understand it’s hard not to do when you’re being insulted."

In that one moment, warning signs were thrown towards Southampton, but they chose to ignore them. Indeed, Pochettino thought his attitude wouldn't get in the way of his performances, and it turned out he was wrong.

What happened to Dani Osvaldo next?

As a club record signing, a lot is expected, especially as a striker. Supporters were expecting Osvaldo to become their next heroic goalscorer, following in the footsteps of Rickie Lambert, but how his Southampton career unravelled instead left supporters pulling their hair out.

In 13 appearances for the club in the 2013/14 campaign, Osvaldo's only moment of brilliance came against Manchester City, as his superbly curled effort helped the Saints to a point against the eventual champions.

"From now on I can show how much I can do, and how well I can perform,” the Italian said, after scoring his third – and last – Southampton goal.

Although he offered words of encouragement to supporters, he failed to kick on from there, headbutting Jose Fonte in training, an incident that ultimately ended his career in England.

Osvaldo spent just 166 days at the club before he was shipped out of the club to Juventus on loan, failing to impress at the Old Lady before Southampton released him in 2015 after he'd bled the club dry of £25m, including fees and wages, across two years.

After retiring at 30-years-old in 2016, the Italian outlined his hatred towards football in an interview with Fox Sports, saying: “Football was not happy, it is a world full of ****." You can imagine the ending of that.

As far as record signings go, Osvaldo will go down as one of the worst in Premier League history.

Legendary fielder Colin Bland dies aged 80

The allrounder, who played 21 Tests for South Africa between 1961 and 1966, had been suffering from colon cancer for several years

Colin Bland, the Bulawayo-born allrounder who played 21 Tests for South Africa between 1961 and 1966, died at his home in London on Saturday night, aged 80. Bland suffered from colon cancer for several years.Bland played first-class cricket for Rhodesia, including fixtures against New Zealand in 1961. He impressed with an innings of 98, and was subsequently included in South Africa’s Test squad. He played all five Tests against New Zealand at home that year, without significant results with the bat, but he showed off the fielding he became best-known for. In later years, Jonty Rhodes’ speed and agility was compared with Bland’s, and his groundwork was a major reason for his selection for the 1963-64 tour to Australia.According to the , Bland “demonstrated that fielding can be both a delight and an exhilarating spectacle through scientific precision.”He did not play the opening Test in Brisbane, but featured in the next four. In the final Test in Sydney, Bland scored his maiden Test hundred to help South Africa take a healthy first-innings lead, and draw the match as well as the series 1-1. He struck his second and final hundreds against England, the latter of those in what would become his penultimate Test, in 1965. His second-innings 127 at The Oval again contributed to a draw, but South Africa’s victory at Nottingham in the second Test gave them their first series win in England. Bland was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1966.The following summer, he was part of the victorious squad that played in the 1966-67 home series against Australia. He only played in the first Test in Johannesburg, where he severely damaged his left knee after crashing into a boundary board. The injury ended his international career. He continued playing for Rhodesia, and captained and coached them. In 1969, Bland moved to Port Elizabeth, where he played first-class cricket until he accepted a job as cricket and hockey coach at the University of Free State in 1971. Bland played cricket for Free State until 1973. After his playing days, Bland ventured into some coaching in cricket and squash. After his relocation to the UK, he continued to coach, and as recently as 2004, was hired by the MCC as a fielding coach.

Spurs: £13m flop was compared to Mousa Dembele when he signed, now he’s an outcast

Tottenham Hotspur are flying at the moment, with little cause for concern under the positive new leadership of Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian boss inherited quite the mess in N17, with a squad bereft of confidence, driven into the ground by the previous failed regimes. Not to mention much of the playing staff had been inherited in aid of a philosophy that could not have been further from the all-action attacking play style the 58-year-old would seek to implement.

He had a huge task on his hands to cultivate a team capable of competing across just a single summer, but given their start it is fair to say that he has succeeded.

With four wins and two draws from their opening six Premier League games, they remain unbeaten having faced some arduous challenges, brushing aside Manchester United whilst recording battling draws with Brentford and Arsenal. Their next test is welcoming an in-form Liverpool side to north London, with many eager to see how such a clash pans out.

One of the great benefits of employing such a cut-throat head coach was that he was willing to cull a side that had admittedly picked up far too many stragglers over the years, with the former Celtic boss noting over the summer: "I don't have a fixed number [of players to leave] in my head, but fair to say our squad is too big at the moment.

"There are obviously guys who will look for opportunities elsewhere. I will deal with what's in front of me and I think we'll see some movement out over the next few weeks."

Given he oversaw the departures of Harry Winks, Davinson Sanchez, Lucas Moura and more, the biggest exit of the window was pushing their club-record signing to Galatasaray on loan.

How much did Spurs pay for Tanguy Ndombele?

As Mauricio Pochettino sought to take his side to the next level after a couple of title pushes and a run to the Champions League final, he was entrusted a larger transfer war chest in 2019 given the year prior they had made history as the first side to never make a signing across a summer.

However, such frugality was perhaps merited given how he would act with money, choosing to unload a ridiculous £63m fee to tempt Ndombele from Lyon.

Whilst the Frenchman had just enjoyed a standout year in his homeland, starring in the midfield with his classy yet combative play style, there was little shown that merited such a lofty fee. It was a risk that did not really need making, and one that unsurprisingly backfired.

Despite firing home on his Premier League debut, that would arguably mark the peak of the 26-year-old's time with the Lilywhites, going on to play just 91 times before a string of loan spells outlined his dwindling status.

First returning to Lyon before his time at Napoli would bring home the Serie A title, he has most recently been outcast to Turkey, with little hope of a triumphant return given his contract expires in 2025.

It was even noted by journalist Paul Brown last year that Ndombele may well go down as one of the most wretched transfer decisions in the club's history, telling GIVEMESPORT:

"I genuinely think, and I have done for a while, that Ndombele is one of the worst signings Spurs have ever made. I keep seeing a lot of people referring to him as a baller. You see clips of him doing skills and tricks and things on Twitter and YouTube, but that's all he is."

What only exacerbates the failure that was to come from such a big-money move was the initial reaction to his signing, with a largely positive reception that has since been made to look foolish.

What was said about Ndombele following his move to Spurs?

"It was a fantastic performance. But to be honest there is a lot to improve, he only showed 30 or 40 per cent of his potential. He has amazing potential to improve," Pochettino would note after that aforementioned opening-day strike against Aston Villa, clearly already delighted with his new purchase.

His was not the only one to dish out high praise to their starring debutant, with teammate Dele Alli also excited at the prospect of playing just in front of Ndombele:

"Last season we had great midfielders as well. He's come in, he looks comfortable and he's a great player. It's an honour to have him at Tottenham. As an attacking player, it's always nice to know you have people behind you who are comfortable on the ball and you don't have to worry about defending."

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

However, neither of these two stars would see their careers continue in the way they envisioned, with the England international now plying his trade for Everton, whilst the latter has become a loan outcast.

Perhaps the highest adulation handed to the £200k-per-week maestro came courtesy of a piece of analysis made by the Metro, who desperately sought to compare him to former Spurs favourite Mousa Dembele.

"Why Tanguy Ndombele is the Mousa Dembele successor Spurs should break the bank to sign," their headline read, with a string of statistics seeking to justify such a claim.

Given how the Belgian performed across his 249 games in north London, with the 2015/16 term an outstanding one, it is fair to say that the £13m-rated dud failed to live up to such expectations.

After all, Dembele's 7.41 average rating that season was mesmeric, and upheld by his four goal contributions, 90% pass accuracy and 92% dribble success rate alongside one key pass, 1.9 interceptions and 3.6 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

How is Tanguy Ndombele playing now?

To compare those figures with Ndombele's final year in the Premier League, and the two are truly incomparable.

The seven-cap flop would record a 6.58 average rating of his own, with his pass accuracy dropping to 87%, his dribble success rate to just 55%, and his tackles per game at a lowly 1.1, via Sofascore.

Given the quality of such comparisons, he could not have failed to live up to those levels more if he tried.

With the price tag unloaded and the output returned, the midfielder is now struggling to impress in Turkey, so it is fair to say that the outcast is – as Brown noted – one of the club's worst signings in history.
