Shadab Khan fined for verbal abuse

The Pakistan wristspinner was docked 20 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his send-off to Chadwick Walton

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2018

AFP

Pakistan wristspinner Shadab Khan has been fined 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of verbal abuse during the second T20 international against West Indies in Karachi. Shadab’s offence amounted to a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct, which also earned him one demerit point. The incident occurred in the ninth over of the West Indies chase, when Shadab dismissed Chadwick Walton. After being taken for 11 runs in his first over by the batsman, Shadab returned to clean him up with a wrong’un off the first ball of his next over. Shadab then followed up by pointing his finger at the departing Walton, and made an inappropriate comment. Shadab, who is Walton’s teammate at Islamabad United, admitted his offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee David Boon.As per the ICC’s code, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. This is the first time Shadab has been caught breaching the player code. If he accumulates three more demerit points within a 24-month period, it will translate into suspension points that will earn him a one-match ban.Pakistan are presently hosting West Indies in Karachi, and have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-T20I series. The third and final game takes place on Tuesday.

Tottenham preparing bid for £30m colossus wanted by Napoli, Milan and Inter

Tottenham Hotspur are back in the Champions League next season and riding high off their Europa League triumph in Bilbao last month, with new head coach Thomas Frank now preparing to build upon their fantastic end to 2024/2025.

The Dane is tasked with picking up where Ange Postecoglou left off, and he stands to inherit an awkward dressing room atmosphere considering just how popular his predecessor was with the Spurs squad.

Tottenham eyeing experienced £9m club captain after public exit admission

Daniel Levy has been made aware of a potential bargain.

James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray were among the players who spoke out in support of Postecoglou, but that wasn’t enough to convince chairman Daniel Levy not to part ways with the 59-year-old who ended their 17-year wait for a major trophy.

The Lilywhites cited their torrid domestic form as the main reason behind Postecoglou’s dismissal, and it is hard to argue with a record-breaking 22 Premier League defeats which handed them a lowly 17th-placed finish in the table.

Frank must now win over the members of his new team in quick fashion, and it is very likely that the former Brentford favourite will bring in new players of his own.

Right now, Spurs are being repeatedly linked with a vast array of wingers, including the likes of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, Man City star Jack Grealish, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo places his penalty.

However, while the signing of another wide forward could be imperative, especially given Son Heung-min’s potential exit to Saudi Arabia, it is also believed that the north Londoners are keen to strengthen at centre-half again.

Tottenham were seriously hamstrung by repeated injuries to their backline last term, with Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Kevin Danso and Cristian Romero all sidelined for extended periods, which even required teenage midfielder Gray to provide cover at one point.

The 19-year-old filled in excellently, and you’d think the arrival of Danso in January would negate the need for another body in that area. However, Romero could well leave Spurs for Atletico Madrid, so Frank would need a replacement for the Argentine.

Tottenham preparing bid for Parma defender Giovanni Leoni

As per CaughtOffside, towering Parma defender Giovanni Leoni is now on their radar as a possible new defensive addition.

Napoli's Romelu Lukaku in action with Parma's GiovanniLeoni

The Italian has been called a “rising star” by sources within the industry, as quoted by this report, and the young 6-foot-5 colossus is a man in demand. Antonio Conte’s Serie A champions Napoli, Inter Milan and AC Milan are all expressing Serie A interest, while Bournemouth and Wolves are believed to be keen on tempting Leoni with a move to England.

Tottenham are even understood to be preparing a £21m bid for Leoni, but this won’t be enough as Parma demand closer to £30 million at least. The teenager was a regular in the top flight last season, and Parma are aware that they have a real talent on their hands, even if the right offer could put them under some pressure to sell.

Serie A has been a fruitful pool of talent for Levy in recent years, so this could be one to watch over the coming weeks, if Spurs decide to go in with a bigger bid.

Spurs: Ange could ditch Kulusevski for £60k-p/w ‘pocket rocket’

Ominous, brooding clouds were hanging over Tottenham Hotspur's Stadium earlier this year, with a miserable 2022/23 campaign failing to yield European qualification, leaving the outfit looking set for a future drenched in misery.

As a bitter by-product of Spurs' failures, talisman and star man Harry Kane pushed for a transfer to German champions Bayern Munich, completing a £100m move to Bavaria and leaving behind the club's record goalscorer and a "legend of the game", according to Statman Dave.

But with Ange Postecoglou's managerial appointment, Tottenham have been systematically revitalised and now look poised for an exciting challenge for top four, perhaps even in with an outside shot at the Premier League title.

Why are Tottenham playing so well this season?

Postecoglou's mounting revolution is soaked in a sort of intuitive understanding of the flow that the Australian manager strives to implement; like a river, he aims for a sense of constancy in the cascade – in Spurs' case, the attacking moves – but also a power in which opposition find wading upstream a taxing task indeed.

And this stream of freshly delivered philosophy is only going to strengthen and grow as the months rage on, with the players nurturing their understanding of collective and individual assignments in a squad steeped in fluidity and dynamism.

The newfound attacking impetus is evidenced through the recharged energy levels, with Tottenham currently taking more shots than any other side in the league (138); last season, they finished seventh in the shot-taking table (518).

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-eriksen-alfie-devine

To think that, already, 26% of last season's total have been taken before even a fifth of the season is promising indeed, illustrating the promising positions Postecoglou's side are drifting into with a regularity that only breeds offensive fruits.

It's not just the strength in attack that is reaping rewards for the club thus far, though, with the fluidity in transition and dynamism injected into the structural progressions proving invaluable.

James Maddison was signed from Leicester City for £40m and his all-conquering creativity in the centre has allowed the likes of Heung-min Son to wreak devastation in the final third, with the England international already chalking up two goals and four assists in the Premier League.

Kane might have departed but Son – the new club captain – has been reborn in a centre-forward role and has scored six times from his last four outings in the league, all serving as the focal frontman.

Frankly, the different components have dovetailed seamlessly under Postecoglou's sage stewardship, and now there is a crystallising possibility that the Lilywhites could be involved in a title race this term.

It's early days, of course, but based on the evidence so far, they have found the formula best served to fuel their squad's fire, and do not look out of place at all in this new, free-flowing system.

Succinctly, it's all going rather swimmingly. The likes of Maddison and Yves Bissouma are thriving, Son's prowess has been restored and a defence that leaked goals like a faulty tap last year has been fixed (albeit still needing further improvement).

However, there are still a few members of the squad who have not quite cemented an unwavering starting berth, and Dejan Kulusevski is one who will need to ramp up his game if he is to continue to earn his place despite already matching his Premier League goal tally from last season.

Is Dejan Kulusevski playing well?

Kulusevski was signed in the summer from Juventus on a reduced £25m transfer after joining on an 18-month loan in January 2022, and has now scored nine goals and supplied 16 assists from 65 appearances across all competitions.

He burst onto the scene with quite the impact, posting five goals and eight assists from just 14 starts in his first Premier League term, earning praise for his energy as a "non-stop machine" by one journalist.

However, last season the Swede saw his progress hampered by thigh problems that ruled him out for ten matches, and he consequently only scored twice in the Premier League all season – a tally that he has indeed already equalled this term – and had pundit Glenn Murray remarking that he was "blowing hot and cold."

Indeed, the 23-year-old has netted in victories over Bournemouth and Sheffield United this term after starting all seven of the Lilywhites' top-flight encounters, but his overall displays have not been conducive to an unwavering position down the offensive right channel.

Against Liverpool, Spurs secured victory to rise to second in the table but only clinched three points against the resolute Reds after Joel Matip's attempted clearance rifled into Alisson's net in the dying embers.

A win's a win and it was a most emphatic one at that, but as The Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick wrote in his post-match ratings, handing Kulusevski a 6/10: 'Saw plenty of the ball and gave Robertson a tough evening but was too predictable at times and could not turn possession into many chances.'

Having spent over a quarter of the match with a two-man advantage, he surely should have done more with his 68 touches, making five key passes but only chalking up 0.15 in xA (expected assists), also taking just two blocked shots.

While he has not been poor at all, Kulusevski is yet to be benched this term and has probably not produced the level of importance to put him on the same pedestal as the likes of Son and Maddison, and with a long season still ahead, it might be wise to hand Manor Solomon a shot at impressing in his less-used position on the right wing.

Should Tottenham start Manor Solomon?

Solomon is primarily a left-winger but he has been deployed on the right sporadically this term, and Postecoglou might be inclined to shuffle the pack somewhat and provide the Israel international with a starting berth in Kulusevski's stead on the right flank against Luton Town next Saturday, in a match that Spurs will be confident of winning.

Solomon was signed on a free transfer after leaving Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer after impressing on loan with Fulham last season, scoring in four successive Premier League matches in February and March and being lauded for his “stunning” efforts by journalist Josh Bunting.

This season, the versatile winger has only started twice in the Premier League but earned two assists on his first start in a 5-2 dismantling of Burnley.

Described as a "pocket rocket" by pundit Jamie Redknapp last season, the 37-cap international ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 5% for goals scored, the top 2% for successful take-ons and tackles and the top 6% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

This level of tenacity and enthusiasm is exactly what Spurs need in their pursuit of silver-laden success this season, and while Kulusevski is a "great talent", as was said by his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, Solomon must be utilised too to provide Postecoglou's burgeoning outfit with another reliable dimension.

The £60k-per-week star was impressive in his cameo against Liverpool and fashioned three key passes in just over 21 minutes, taking 31 touches and losing possession only twice.

Crisp and composed, Solomon certainly offers something different, and he must now be unleashed from the start to continue his integration within this thriving Tottenham team.

Surrey taught a lesson in front of 5,000 schoolchildren

Craig Overton ensured Surrey’s annual schools day did not go according to plan, taking four wickets as they were bundled out for 129

ScorecardFive thousand South London schoolchildren, boosting the Kia Oval crowd as part of Surrey’s annual Schools’ Day, saw Somerset trounce their local heroes by eight wickets after skittling Rory Burns’s team for just 129 in 35.2 overs.Craig Overton took 4 for 27 in two spells, including a new ball burst of 3 for 16 in six overs, and Peter Trego picked up 2 for 23 in ten skilful and controlled overs from the Vauxhall End.It then took Somerset just 21.3 overs to knock off the runs, with Johann Myburgh finishing on a punishing 75 not out from 65 balls, with 13 fours, as they got their Royal London One-Day Cup South Group campaign off to the perfect start.Sam Curran did sent back both Steven Davies, caught off a leading edge for 12, and Trego, leg-before second ball for a duck, in his third over, but Myburgh and James Hildreth then added an unbroken stand of 96 in just 16 overs with Hildreth also playing some attractive shots in his unbeaten 35.It was Somerset’s fourth successive Royal London Cup victory against Surrey but from the home side, beaten Lord’s cup finalists in each of the last three years and one of the fancied teams in the competition again this season, it was an abject performance.Put in on a two-paced pitch, they were 12 for 3 before the end of the fourth over and never came to turns with the discipline needed batting first on such a surface. Poor or over-ambitious strokes were compounded by the unnecessary run out for 0 of Scott Borthwick, who came in at No 7 rather than in the top order as he does in championship cricket. Will Jacks, a 19-year-old graduate of Surrey’s prolific Academy, was sent in to open with Dean Elgar and made just 3 before, in the second over, he lifted a drive at Overton to extra cover.South Africa Test opener Elgar was next to go, in the third over, steering Lewis Gregory to backward point on 1, and Ollie Pope, in at No 4, got a leading edge as he tried to drive Overton towards mid on and was athletically caught for 0 by Max Waller, sprinting in five yards and also diving forward from a deepish mid off.Ben Foakes quickly reached 21, with some pedigree strokes, before he was unfortunate to edge a legside ball from Overton to keeper Davies. That was 41 for 4 and it got even worse for Surrey when, on 50 and 58 respectively, skipper Burns chipped Trego to mid on to go for 17 before Borthwick, playing Trego to mid on, called for a sharp single but saw his partner Curran fail to respond. He was left stranded at the bowlers’ end.Curran played some nice shots in his 30, the top score of the innings, but saw Rikki Clarke hit a short ball from Trego high to deep mid wicket on 9 before he himself was caught behind in the next over, the 27th, as he drove at Gregory to leave Surrey 84 for 8.The tail at least took Surrey into three figures, with Gareth Batty (14) leg-before to Tim Groenewald aiming an ugly smear and Jade Dernbach swinging the same bowler for a mighty six over long on before skying Overton to cover on 12.Stuart Meaker remained 18 not out but Surrey’s final total was never going to be enough and the match was over by 3.45pm – the finish delayed by a scheduled 45-minute interval, taken when Somerset were 81 for 2 from 14 overs.

Man Utd: Ten Hag could sign "phenomenal" £48m Amrabat upgrade

Manchester United will have been grateful for the international break as a chance for Erik ten Hag to regroup and gather his thoughts ahead of a crucial few weeks ahead.

Having won the EFL Cup and secured qualification for the Champions League during his maiden season in charge, it looks as though second-season syndrome is setting in as United have lost six of their 11 matches so far.

It's clear that he needs more depth in his playing squad and while the summer transfer window saw the Red Devils sign the likes of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, they haven’t had the desired impact thus far.

Hojlund has scored three times in the Champions League, yet is goalless in the Premier League and the Dutchman will need more from the youngster.

The Old Trafford side missed out on a variety of targets during the transfer window, most notably Victor Osimhen, Harry Kane and even Moises Caicedo as he looked to bolster his squad.

Harry Kane for Bayern Munich

All three would’ve been wonderful signings, yet it is perhaps where United are in the current market that they didn’t make the move to Manchester.

It was another name which the Red Devils were linked with however that Ten Hag should make a more concrete effort to sign in the January transfer window – Joshua Kimmich.

Were Man Utd close to signing Joshua Kimmich?

Towards the end of the transfer window, reports in Spain suggested that Kimmich was emerging as a key target for the Dutchman ahead of the 2023/24 season.

joshua-kimmich-bayern-munich-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-lukas-podolski

With just two years left on his current contract, it appeared as though the summer represented the perfect opportunity for Bayern Munich to rake in a massive profit on the midfielder.

The move never materialised however and United ended up signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on deadline day as a way to strengthen in the middle of the park.

He joined on a season-long loan move with an option to buy for £21.4m but have the club managed to secure a solid deal, or are they better going back in for the German during the January transfer window?

What has Kimmich won in his career?

Since joining the Bavarian side back in 2015, the German has gone on to become one of the finest midfielders on the continent and has amassed 358 appearances for Bayern, while scoring 40 goals and grabbing 99 assists in the process.

His list of honours is just as impressive, with the 28-year-old winning the Champions League in 2020 alongside eight Bundesliga titles and a handful of other domestic trophies and there is no doubt United would have a player with a wonderful winning mentality should they lure him to England.

His performances during the 2019/20 campaign led to lavish praise from Jose Mourinho, who said: "I see him as a top right-back, left-back, centre-back, No.6, No.8, No.10… he has the qualities to be anything!

"I think he looks to me, very intelligent related to football, very intelligent, understands the moments of the games and understands the difference between positions and understands what he has to do here and what he has to do there. I think he’s phenomenal, an absolutely phenomenal player."

High praise indeed and with United currently struggling so far this season, conceding 19 goals across just 11 games, they are clearly failing to win the midfield battles, resulting in some poor results and a drop in confidence.

Amrabat has been deployed as an emergency left-back due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrrell Malacia, yet Kimmich would certainly be the better option in the heart of the pitch than the Moroccan.

Is Joshua Kimmich better than Sofyan Amrabat?

When compared to positional peers, Kimmich has showcased his talents across a range of metrics and he currently ranks in the top 8% for assists per 90 (0.24), top 5% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.32), top 1% for passes attempted per 90 (87.63) and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90 (9.44), clearly indicating that he offers a solid threat going forward with come incisive passing.

In comparison, Amrabat when compared to positional peers, fails to rank in the top 50% for either assists (0.05) or shot-creating actions (1.77) per 90, while also doesn’t rank as highly as Kimmich for passes attempted per 90 (69.29) and progressive passes per 90 (7.12) and these metrics see him ranked in the top 11% and 14% respectively.

This suggests Kimmich has been the better performer throughout the course of the last 12 months and considering he is playing for one of the biggest teams in Europe makes these displays even better.

This season, the German has been in outstanding form, averaging 3.1 key passes per game, creating two big chances and grabbing three assists.

Amrabat on the other hand, has averaged one key pass per game, created zero big chances and also failed to register an assist. He has been playing out of position, however.

The Bayern gem has also outshone Amrabat defensively, making more tackles (2.3 to two), interceptions (one to 0.7) and has won a higher percentage of total duels per game (57% to 43%) proving he can contribute both going forward while also helping his side out defensively during matches.

Missing out on him back in the summer looks like a huge mistake by Ten Hag, and he must surely reignite another move for the 5 foot 9 ace when the winter transfer window opens up in a couple of months. It may, however, cost a pretty penny with Football Transfers valuing him at £48m.

His performances have been outstanding in recent months, and it looks as though he is going from strength to strength and United need some rejuvenation throughout the midfield area.

Casemiro is 31, so is Christian Eriksen and with Scott McTominay playing a bit part role, the next few transfer windows will be vital in establishing some depth in this area.

Kimmich is still in his peak years and given that he has won everything there has to be won in Germany, might a new challenge await itself in Manchester?
