Theunis de Bruyn scored his first Test century, in his sixth match, to make Sri Lanka work for their series win. But he could not prevent the inevitable. The hosts wrapped up victory 40 minutes after lunch on the fourth day, to seal the series 2-0.Sri Lanka’s spinners took all 20 wickets in the match, and 37 of South Africa’s 40 wickets in the series. Dilruwan Perera finished as the joint leading wicket-taker with 16 scalps, level with Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s other standout performer from the second Test. Rangana Herath, playing in his penultimate series most likely, took 12 wickets across the two matches, including a second-innings six-for in Colombo, his 12th five-wicket haul in the fourth innings of a match.Herath accounted for both South Africa’s main resistors on the fourth day – de Bruyn and Temba Bavuma. The pair shared South Africa’s first century stand of the series, and became the only two players in their line-up to bring up fifties on the tour. Their 123-run stand is the highest by a South African pair in the fourth innings of a match in Asia. It took the Test into an 11th session, but South Africa still lost inside four days.On the evidence of South Africa’s previous three innings, Sri Lanka would have been justified in thinking they would take the remaining five wickets quickly on the fourth morning, but they were made to wait until 10 minutes before lunch for a breakthrough. De Bruyn and Bavuma were confident on the sweep shot and forced Sri Lanka to look further than their three main spinners, with Suranga Lakmal having his first bowl of the match in the 55th over, and Dhananjaya de Silva and Danushka Gunathilaka both turning their arms over.De Bruyn showed, for the first time at international level, why he is much lauded in the domestic franchise game and may have made a strong case to be persisted with at No. 3 with a display of strong temperament and impressive strokeplay. Bavuma’s half-century came off 69 balls, and he may have been eyeing a long-overdue second Test hundred but, with lunch looming, pushed forward to a Herath delivery and was caught behind.Quinton de Kock opened his account with a reverse-sweep, which suggested his time in the middle could be fun, but it ended on the stroke of lunch. De Kock was given out lbw to a Herath delivery and the batsman reviewed. Replays showed “umpires call” on leg stump to end a disappointing tour for de Kock, who scored 53 runs in four innings.De Bruyn may have been concerned about running out of partners as his hundred approached but Kagiso Rabada negotiated the second new ball well to stay with him for an eighth-wicket stand of 34. Rabada even showed off his own prowess, with a thunderous six over Herath’s head. De Bruyn brought up his century off 228 balls with a paddle to fine leg and was dismised four balls later, leaving an arm ball, to give Herath his fifth.Three balls later, Rabada edged Dilruwan to first slip and in the next over, Steyn smacked Herath for six and then tried to slog him over the top but only got the toe end of his bat and was caught at long-on. Herath’s six-for was not enough to earn him the Man-of-the-Match award, which went to Dimuth Karunaratne, who was also named Man of the Series. Karunaratne scored 356 runs in the series, more than double his nearest competitor, opening partner Gunathilaka, who racked up 161. South Africa’s top-scorer was fourth on the list – Faf du Plessis with 105 runs.
Brighton & Hove Albion are once again flying under Roberto De Zerbi this season, sitting as high as seventh, having already secured convincing victories over Manchester United and Newcastle United. Meanwhile, the Seagulls earned their first point in a battling 2-2 draw against Ligue 1 Marseille in the Europa League.

The fact is, the job that De Zerbi is doing is one of the most impressive in not only the Premier League, but also European football as a whole, and now the manager has received yet another boost.
Brighton injury updates and team news
After losing both Mac Allister and Caicedo in the summer, the last thing Brighton needed was injuries in midfield. Yet, just nine games into the Premier League season, and they're already without Julio Enciso and Solly March, With games coming thick and fast in both Europe and domestic competitions, however, they needed a positive on the availability front at some stage, and they've got just that ahead of games against Ajax and Fulham.
The latest Jakub Moder injury news has handed De Zerbi an undoubted boost. As reported by The Sussex Express, the midfielder is finally back in full training after missing over a year through an ACL injury sustained against Norwich City in April 2022. This means that Moder is yet to even make an appearance under De Zerbi, highlighting just how long he's been forced to watch on from the sidelines.
Moder comes back in at a good time, though, as the Seagulls look to secure their first Europa League win against Ajax, and return to winning ways in the Premier League against Fulham.
What happened to Jakub Moder?
Having joined Brighton for a reported £7m in the summer of 2020, before heading out on loan back to Lech Poznan until the end of the calender year, Moder finally got his Brighton career going in the following season under Graham Potter, before injury struck. And, ever since, the 24-year-old has had a nightmare spell.
Following his ACL injury in April 2022, Moder had two surgeries, missing the end of the 2021/22 season, as well as the entirety of the last campaign, in which Brighton achieved a Europa League place. Now, finally back in training, the Polish midfielder won't be rushed back in, but he will at least begin to work his way back into the squad for the first time under De Zerbi.
When fully fit and at his best, Moder has earned plenty of praise in the past, including from former Poland boss Paulo Sousa, who told TV Sport, via The Argus: “I don’t like to individualise. The last game at Brighton in the Premier League was amazing. Of course the tempo is different. To integrate and to play more regularly in these top leagues is not easy. Technically he is a great player. He is a big lad physically. What he needs to improve a lot is the intensity.”

Newcastle United are "very interested" in signing a Barcelona defender who has been described as "extraordinary" by a genuine footballing legend, according to a new transfer rumour.
Newcastle eyeing midfield signings
The Magpies have constantly been linked with making new signings in the coming transfer windows, as Eddie Howe looks to take his squad to the next level. In the summer, Newcastle acquired the services of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, in an exciting piece of transfer business, but sadly, his season has ended prematurely because of a 10-month ban that has come his way for betting offences.
For that reason, it hasn't been a surprise to see a number of midfielders tipped to come in and make up for the loss of the 23-year-old, who won't be available until early next season. The likes of Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante are all reportedly wanted by Newcastle, although loan moves look most likely at the moment, due to Financial Fair Play (FFP).
While midfield clearly looks like a key area of focus for Howe, should the funds be available to make a new signing, it could also be that he looks to bring in a new centre-back, with the influential Sven Botman struggling with injuries so far this season and often being unavailable. A new report certainly suggests that that is the case, with the Magpies eyeing up a potential move for a player with Premier League experience under his belt.
Newcastle linked with Andreas Christensen
According to a new update from Sport [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are keen on signing former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, who is now plying his trade at Barcelona.
It is stated that the Magpies are "still very interested" in the signing the Dane, with Newcastle linked with acquiring Christensen's signature in the past. They are believed to be "very attentive" to the Barca centre-back, who is described as the "most reliable" player in his position at his current club.
Christensen could be a brilliant signing by Howe's men, with the Denmark international an impressive footballer who has already achieved a lot in his career, despite still only being 27 years of age.
A proven player for a sustained period of time now, Christensen's statistics and achievements show the success that he has enjoyed over the years, winning the La Liga title with Barca last season, not to mention enjoying Champions League glory with Chelsea back in 2021.

This has been a match when Yorkshiremen have thought of absent players but those in the media have marked the passing of a colleague. Dave Callaghan, who commentated on the county’s matches for Radio Leeds for over 30 years, died suddenly in March. His loss is sharply felt and the players feel it too. However bad their day had been Cally was almost always able to cheer them up a bit and the Yorkshire squad observed a minute’s silence when they heard of his death.Cally loved Scarborough and so it was only appropriate on the first day of this game that the two broadcasting boxes were renamed “Cally 1” and “Cally 2” in his memory. These are tough weeks for Yorkshire but any cricketer knows that defeats must be borne by any side.
