Porém o Juventude segurou a pressão e complicou a vida do time de Recife.

Wolves’ "incredibly direct" dynamo could replace Neto in surprise role

Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun to find their footing under the guidance of Gary O’Neil, after what was a dreary summer for the Old Gold.

From financial fair play (FFP) woes to the departure of Julen Lopetegui just five days prior to the 2023/24 Premier League season opener, it was a testing time for those at Molineux.

Ten games into the season and O’Neil is finally getting the best out of his side, who sit 12th in the league table having netted 13 goals, just 18 shy of their total tally of last term to highlight their progression under the new manager.

Unfortunately, it’s not all been plain sailing for the Midlands club, who were humbled last time out as star man Pedro Neto was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury, a sight no one wanted to see.

Pedro Neto injury news

The Portuguese winger pulled up during Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at Molineux unchallenged and was stretchered off in what was an anxiety-ridden sight for those associated with the club to witness.

After struggling to fully emerge at Wolves over the years due to injury woes, Neto has finally hit top form this term, highlighted by his eight goal contributions in ten league appearances so far.

The 23-year-old currently tops the Premier League assists chart with seven, as his creative eye on the right flank continues to cause havoc, with him averaging a stellar 2.5 key passes per game.

Speaking after the Newcastle draw in which the winger was hurt, O’Neil provided a hopeful first-look evaluation of the Portugal international, saying that he was “moving around” after the game.

The manager spoke from the experience of Joe Hodge who also injured his hamstring this term, saying that as the midfielder was not out for long, he was “hopeful” that Neto will follow a similar fate.

With Hwang Hee-chan on the left, Matheus Cunha in the centre and Neto on the right, O’Neil has unlocked a new level of direct threat going forward, however the Englishman must now look for other options to fill the forward’s absence.

The stats that show Jean-Ricner Bellegarde could replace Pedro Neto

One player that the boss shed light on returning was deadline day signing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, saying that he will “find a way” to cope without Neto.

While fielding the typically central player on the flank is a less conventional rotation to make, the numbers suggest that the Frenchman could thrive in the role played by the injured number seven.

jean-ricner-bellegarde-wolves

Prior to his move to Wolves, the 25-year-old had started the Ligue 1 campaign impeccably with Strasbourg, scoring two and assisting two in only three appearances for his former side.

Lauded as “incredibly direct” by football data expert Thom Harris after his debut against Liverpool, Bellegarde showcased just how frightening his talents can be when on the ball, suggesting he could replicate Neto’s dynamism in the wide channels.

Harris also noted the midfielder as being “versatile”, which would add even more of a claim to his potential of being utilised as a wide forward, with his statistics in France earlier in the season reinforcing his threat.

As per Sofascore, the £12.8m signing averaged an impressive 2.7 successful dribbles per game prior to his Ligue 1 exit, a higher average than that of Kylian Mbappe in the French top-tier, who averages 2.2 per game so far.

O’Neil could utilise the power and direct danger that Bellegarde causes when on the ball to fill the void left by Neto, in a move that could keep momentum going in the squad without their lead forward involved.

Andrew Hodd scripts an gloriously unlikely farewell after answering Yorkshire's SOS

Earlier in the season the wicketkeeper announced he would retire at the end of the summer and this has been unexpected chance after a 300-mile dash

ScorecardThere may be no more heartwarming story this county season than this one involving Andrew Hodd – the player who imagined he might never play for Yorkshire again, but who found himself dashing 300 miles to answer an emergency call to arms and responded with one of the finest innings of his life. For the story to end perfectly – and only the most uncompromising Somerset supporter would chide at the thought – Hodd would make another 16 runs when this match resumes at Headingley on the third morning, enough to bring him a fifth first-class century in a 16-year career. Nothing is certain: for one thing, Yorkshire’s tail, with seven down for 292, still 107 behind, might not necessarily stick around for the celebration.Whatever his fate, the man who styled himself a “soft southerner” when he joined Yorkshire from Sussex, and who rediscovered his zest for the game under the coaching of Jason Gillespie has already enjoyed what might turn out to be a delightful last moment in the sun, an innings to relish, a confident, unbeaten 84 when his stroke was sure and his mind looked uncluttered. Impending retirement can sometimes relieve the pressure and make the game feel easy.Talking T20

His sixth-wicket stand of 173 in 47 overs with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, whose 81 was his highest Yorkshire score (his stories are in the future), led Yorkshire from the perils of 119 for 5, the follow-on looming against a Somerset side who were extending their domination on the opening day. It would have been lovely to find out what Hodd made of it all. But Yorkshire, facing the threat of relegation, had no truck with romance and didn’t let him talk about it, presumably on the grounds his nnings was incomplete, Kohler-Cadmore offering up some routine platitudes instead. “Tough” decisions are not always the ones that county cricket’s put-upon followers deserve.Sometimes making the break from a playing career can be a tortuous one. Ryan Sidebottom, Hodd’s former Yorkshire team-mate, has become the latest player to reflect this week on the depression that can ensue after retirement, talking on BBC Radio how self-esteem can be lost and how the player can feel they are letting everyone down. “It’s a very difficult time,” he said.Hodd’s mid-season decision to call time on his Yorkshire career was by all accounts an emotional one. It is a fortunate player who approaches retirement with a certainty that the time is right. The games are about to end, the camaraderie will never quite be the same and, however much planning is made for the future, it can be a jolt. It is well worth a few tears. But this was so much better than how he imagined it might end. His last Championship match was at Taunton in late April, a first-baller in the first innings, a single in the second. Then the Royal London Cup intervened, and Jonny Tattersall, encouraged to take up wicketkeeping by Yorkshire’s coach, Andrew Gale, held his place when the Championship resumed. Even his selection for the Seconds has been a rarity as Yorkshire look to the future. How joyous it was therefore for Hodd to have at least one final match in the limelight – it is best to say “at least” because after playing like this he will not be easy to replace even if Tattersall recovers from his back spasm – and for him to take the opportunity with such relish. One suspects that Hodd will make the transition into retirement more easily than most. He is a qualified electrician and a dab hand at most forms of DIY – he once broke off from plastering a wall at home in Halifax to answer a Yorkshire SOS. His nickname of the HoddFather would be more appropriate as the Hodd Carrier: certainly on this occasion, with Yorkshire’s foundations crumbling, he had become a repairer in times of need.Yorkshire rounded up Somerset’s tail within eight overs on the second morning, but there was enough life in the surface for the follow-on figure of 250 to seem a 50:50 call. Adam Lyth’s disciplined 45 set them on their way, but he saw Harry Brook bowled off his pad by Lewis Gregory 13 balls into the innings and then Kane Williamson loop a simple catch to gully off Craig Overton.Yorkshire then lost three wickets for eight runs to slip to 119 for 5. Lyth was superbly caught at second slip by the Grand Old Man, Marcus Trescothick; Gary Ballance was in good order until, on 37, he was picked off in front of square – seemingly a deliberate plan – by Craig Overton; and Jack Leaning chipped back a return catch off a leading edge. The day then fell to Hodd and Kohler-Cadmore. Both men, with naturally attacking styles, played fluently on both sides of the wicket. Kohler-Cadmore welcomed Jack Leach’s left-arm spin with a six into the unfinished stand (one suspects Leach will be back for much more as the match progresses) and as Hodd suggested that his absence had been a restorative one, only Craig Overton limited his ambition. Just as Lewis Gregory and Steve Davies, had run unfettered in the final session on the opening day, so Hodd and Kohler-Cadmore did on the second before two late wickets for Josh Davey roused Somerset spirits.

West Indies pick uncapped Sheneta Grimmond for World T20 defence

Eleven of the 15 members named were a part of the title-winning squad from 2016

West Indies women have called up the uncapped 20-year old Sheneta Grimmond from Guyana for their title defence at the Women’s World T20 that begins at home in November. However, they retained the bulk of the squad that lifted the trophy in 2016, naming 11 of them in a 15-member squad announced on Wednesday. Jamaica batsman Chinelle Henry, wicketkeeper Natasha McLean, and allrounder Chedean Nation were the other additions.West Indies squad

Stafanie Taylor (capt), Afy Fletcher, Anisa Mohammed, Britney Cooper, Chedean Nation, Chinelle Henry, Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, Kycia Knight, Merissa Aguilleira, Natasha McLean, Shakera Selman, Shamilia Connell, Shemaine Campbelle, Sheneta Grimmond

Henry is unseasoned at the international level, having turned out in just two ODIs and seven T20Is so far. She last played for West Indies over three years ago, in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo. McLean and Nation have more experience on their side and were both part of the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa. Nation, at the time of the last World T20, was in the middle of a seven-year absence from international cricket that ended when she was recalled to the limited-overs squad later that year.West Indies most recently drew a three-match ODI series and five-match T20I series against South Africa. They will next head into their fourth and final training camp of the year, starting October 15 in Antigua.”The women have one final training camp before the warm-up matches and we are focusing our plans on ensuring that they are ready to peak when the tournament starts in November,” head coach Henderson Springer said. “We want to create an environment that enables the players to continue their hard work on improving their skills and fitness, whilst providing real focus on the key roles of each player for us to be successful. We are aiming for consistency, and we think with the work we have put in, the ladies will peak at the right time.”The team will once again be led by Stafanie Taylor, whose half-century in the 2016 final set up the victory. “Captaining the West Indies in the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 is both a huge honour and a massive challenge. It will obviously be a great feeling to lead the team at home, but one has to also live up to expectations of being defending champions,” Taylor said.”We have a great squad with several potential match winners, but we will have to be at our best in each and every match if we want to lift the trophy again.”The announcement of the squad makes me realise that the tournament is almost upon us. The opposition squads are really impressive, and this promises to be a highly competitive tournament. I really hope that Windies fans can come out and support us as we strive to defend our title on home soil.”West Indies will start their campaign against Bangladesh on November 10. The other teams with them in Group A are England, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Rodgers must unleash Celtic’s "improving" ace over Kyogo

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon as they take on Aberdeen at Parkhead ahead of the November international break.

The Hoops head into this match in need of a reaction after their dismal 6-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Brendan Rodgers' side were ripped to shreds by the Spanish giants, with an early red card for Daizen Maeda not helping their cause, and they now have an opportunity to pick up a positive result before players head away with their respective countries.

One change the Northern Irish head coach must make to the starting XI that lined up in Spain is to ditch Kyogo Furuhashi and unleash Hyeon-Gyu Oh in his place.

Kyogo's performance against Atletico in numbers

The Japan international produced a woeful display on Tuesday as he failed to impose himself on the match to help Celtic cause problems at the other end of the pitch.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

As per Sofascore, Kyogo played 61 minutes of the 6-0 defeat and only had eight touches of the ball in total. With those touches, the forward failed to complete a single pass – with one attempted – and lost three of his four physical duels.

Unfortunately, that was not a new issue for the Hoops lightweight as he has now gone four matches without a goal in all competitions for the Hoops.

He also only completed three passes and failed to create any chances for his teammates – along with zero goals – in his last two Premiership starts.

The statistics that show why Oh should start

Meanwhile, Oh stepped up off the bench against Atletico and showed some fight during the second half by winning six of his eight duels and completing two passes.

The South Korea international started and played the full 90 minutes against Ross County last time out in the Premiership and showed signs of what he is capable of.

As you can see in the table above, Oh was constantly involved in the match by winning duels, making passes, creating chances, and taking shots at the opposition goal.

He was not rewarded with a goal or an assist for his efforts but did manage to pop up with a winning goal off the bench against St. Mirren in the previous league match.

The 22-year-old dynamo, who was once dubbed an "improving" talent by South Korean hero Jung-won Seo, has only started one league game for the Hoops this season and his recent performance suggest that he deserves more time on the pitch.

Oh, who scored six goals in 16 league outings last term for the Bhoys, has shown that he has the ability and physicality to be a constant nuisance to opposition defenders. Whereas, Kyogo's recent displays have left a lot to be desired in terms of his impact, or lack thereof, in and out of possession as a number nine.

This is why Rodgers must ditch the Japan international, who made zero passes in midweek, in favour of the 6 foot 1 centre-forward against Aberdeen today.

Leeds can give £60k-p/w star his first start of 2023/24 vs Rotherham

Leeds United will be hoping that the most recent international break hasn't spoiled their momentum ahead of tonight's Yorkshire derby clash against Rotherham United.

The Whites make the short trip to South Yorkshire in impressive form, winning six of their last seven matches while the hosts are winless in five and were thrashed 4-0 by Watford last time out.

If Daniel Farke's side needed any further incentive to pile more misery onto their county rivals, an opportunity to go five points behind the automatic promotion places with victory is the prize awaiting them.

In his recent press conference, the German tactician provided a disappointing update as striker Georginio Rutter is flagged as a "major doubt" while it's unlikely that Farke will risk left-back Sam Byram, who has just recovered from his injury.

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

The Englishman has played a starring role down the left flank this term and will be a huge miss if he is left out.

Sam Byram's season in numbers

When an academy graduate returns to the club where they began their career, there's no guarantee it works out, however, Byram has been a revelation since returning to West Yorkshire and has made that left-back spot his own.

Hailed for his importance to the side and possessing "quality" in abundance by Farke, the 30-year-old has started in 13 of their 16 Championship matches and has impressed with his energetic, tenacious and tough-tackling ability.

Byram's aggressive attacking displays and incredible defensive work have stood out this term, striking up a strong partnership with the Dutch dynamo Crysencio Summerville, while providing exceptional support down the left flank.

In a supremely attacking Leeds side, orchestrated by the German's tactical expertise, Byram is thriving in a similar role that Stuart Dallas played in their 2019/20 promotion campaign.

A driving force at both ends of the field, as delineated by the table above, the former Norwich City man is a threat in the final third and is difficult to beat down the left flank.

If he is forced into sitting out for this clash, it's likely that Junior Firpo will come in for his first start of the season.

He struggled in the early stages of his career to translate his sensational form from Barca to Elland Road as highlighted by some of his performances last term, one of which was against Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez.

Described by journalist Dean Jones as having "some difficulties" adapting to the Premier League following that battle with Mahrez, Firpo was unable to match the physicality required in the top division, although he did impress towards the end of that relegation campaign.

After spending the majority of this campaign recovering from a long-term injury to his knee, Firpo could finally get his chance to show Byram the level of talent he's competing against for a spot in the team tonight.
