Asif Ali's 33-ball 80 stuns Durban Heat

The Pakistan batsman launched a savage assault to revive a sinking Cape Town chase, after Durban had recovered to 157 despite a four-wicket burst from Anrich Nortje

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan18-Nov-2018

Mzansi Super League

Asif Ali produced a performance for the ages, shellacking a 33-ball 80, as Cape Town Blitz turned the tables on Durban Heat in a stunning chase at Kingsmead. This innings was a clinic, really, embodying all the attributes that define T20 batting: flair, skill, daring, power, and creativity of the highest order.Asif was the life jacket Blitz needed, after they had been reduced to 83 for 5 by Keshav Maharaj’s crafty left-arm spin; by the time he was finished, Asif had slashed the required rate from a hefty 12.40 to a run a ball. An excellent 19th over by Marchant de Lange left Heat clinging on to a tiny ray of hope, but it was dashed when Kyle Abbott overpitched the first ball of the 20th and Malusi Siboto crunched a cover drive to all but seal the game. That result looked highly unlikely when Blitz were 51 for 3 in the ninth over. The required rate was already touching 10 and this was a seaming surface. Conditions were overcast. The bounce could be disconcerting. And in addition to all that support for the faster bowlers, Maharaj had already shown that if a spinner could find the ideal pace, he could get the ball to stop on the batsman and force errors.Asif dealt with his first two balls, from Maharaj, with caution, getting a feel for the surface. And then, he got down to business. The manner of his progression left Heat tearing their hair apart. It didn’t matter what the bowlers did; Asif had an answer ready. Slide it into leg: sweep; take it away outside off: reverse sweep; fire it in straight: step out and smack.Even Maharaj, Heat’s best bowler, was not spared. He had 3 for 13 in three overs when he came back in the 15th and Asif slapped him for a four and six off his first two balls. Those hits marked the beginning of a dramatic turnaround as Blitz pillaged 52 runs in three overs. And all of those, barring a wide, came off Asif’s bat.The return of a mild drizzle worsened things for an under-fire Heat attack, as they began missing their mark. A sequence of six, four and six to start off the 16th over gave Asif his fifty off 21 balls and Heat were on the backfoot for the first time in the chase. The brutality of it all meant Heat had to hold on to any chance that came their way. That opportunity presented itself twice in the 17th over and they let both slip.Having already cracked a brace of fours, Asif swung a de Lange short ball across the line and miscued it to deep midwicket. Maharaj moved sharply towards the ball and lined himself behind it well, but in trying to catch it off over his head, he lost balance and fell over even as the ball trickled away to the boundary. Three deliveries later, Temba Bavuma shelled Asif, running back from mid-off. It really was a sign that on this day Asif couldn’t do any wrong.Like Blitz, Heat struggled through the early phases of their innings. Anrich Nortje, the left-arm fast bowler, made use of the helpful conditions to shock the batsmen with pace. He struck three times in the eighth over as Morne van Wyk, Bavuma and Sarel Erwee all lost their stumps. Hashim Amla fared no better, trapped lbw by one that straightened, and Heat were in the middle of a full-blown collapse.Brought together at 48 for 4, Khaya Zondo and Albie Morkel began the tedious recovery, consolidating through the middle overs and finding timely boundaries. Dale Steyn’s waning powers as a white-ball bowler came to prominence again as he was taken apart for three successive fours in the 13th over and finished with 0 for 45. Together, Zondo and Morkel put on 71 in 53 balls, and struck five fours and as many sixes between them. But, as Asif would demonstrate later, it just wasn’t savage enough.

Spurs could repeat Dele Alli masterclass with swoop for “brilliant” EFL star

Tottenham Hotspur will surely target players who can make an instant impact on the first-team after taking some heavy fire recently, with Ange Postecoglou's excellent start to life in the Premier League blighted by injuries and suspensions.

Spurs fell by the wayside last season, collapsing and squandering the progress made under Antonio Conte's stewardship, who secured Champions League qualification in 2021/22.

An eighth-placed finish resulted in Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich, but Postecoglou was appointed from Celtic with the view that he would instil a positive, exciting style and rekindle the club's verve.

Spurs could avenge Richarlison blunder with move for "unbelievable" 6 ft 5 titan

Tottenham could secure a star for years to come with a move for this PL player.

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 1, 2023

Such hopes and dreams were realised emphatically over the opening months of the campaign, with the Australian picking up all the pieces and engineering a blistering start to the current campaign, winning eight and drawing two of the opening Premier League matches of the term.

Such success propelled Spurs into first place, but now enduring a three-match skid, the injury-hit London club is searching for some respite, and the January transfer window could bring the reinforcements needed to steady the ship.

While bolstering the ranks with senior signings is important, Postecoglou would be wise to continue the development of the younger segment of the squad, with Adam Wharton reportedly earmarked to do just that.

Tottenham transfer news – Adam Wharton

According to a recent report from 90min, Tottenham have entered the race to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Wharton after being impressed by the 19-year-old's performances in the Championship.

Liverpool Newcastle United, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton are also suitors and have been monitoring the player's progress over the past year.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will hope that his side's £3m acquisition of Ashley Phillips from Rovers in the summer could sway the odds in his favour, with the respective clubs believed to be on good terms after the negotiations.

Adam Wharton's season in numbers

Rising from Blackburn's academy ranks, Wharton established himself as one of the finest young talents in the English second tier last season and made 18 league appearances last term, starting the final five fixtures in succession.

This season, he has made gains from last year and has already started 13 times in the Championship, completing 83% of his passes, averaging 1.4 key passes, 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 5.6 ball recoveries per game and succeeding with 67% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

Touted to be a "great player" by Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson, Wharton is proving himself to be a solid option to complement his side's promotion push, with Tomasson also remarking over his meticulous approach to getting the job done in the right way.

adam-wharton-blackburn-rovers-transfer-opinion-jude-bellingham-eddie-howe-premier-league

His manager said: "He was the best player in the game. The boy he gets things right, on the ball, off the ball, and that’s great to see. I’m happy to see that development Adam has made this season. If you do the right things in training, and keep doing the right things, you will get chances.

It’s also important that a young lad shouldn’t go down and (start) doing the wrong things. Everything is possible for the boy if he does the right things.”

Should Spurs forge ahead with a deal, Wharton could prove to be another Levy masterclass in dipping down the divisions and procuring a precocious starlet, replicating the former deal to bring Dele Alli to White Hart Lane.

Dele Alli's Tottenham career

Spurs completed the £5m transfer of Alli from League One side MK Dons in February 2015, warding off fierce competition from multiple clubs for his signature.

Alli had just scored 16 goals and supplied nine assists in his final campaign in the third tier and was evidently a top-class talent, but few foresaw the instantaneous gelling he would have at the heart of Mauricio Pochettino's side's endeavours.

Jose Mourinho proclaimed that Alli could become "one of the world's best", but unfortunately he slipped and fell from grace after such a remarkable start to life on the major stage, now fighting to get back to fitness with Everton so he can make his first appearance of the season.

The 37-cap international might have faded away from prominence over the past several years but he is undoubtedly one of the most exciting youngsters to have ever burst onto the scene.

Alli had that rare, ineffable brilliance that only the select few possess, a wow factor and a seat-raising style that captivated the masses and left opposition fans fearing his wrath.

Wharton would not bring the same level of offensive panache, but he definitely boasts plenty of quality that could shoot him right up the ranks over the coming years.

Adam Wharton's potential

Spurs' midfield is somewhat threadbare at present, and given that Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will both be absent for January and possibly part of February due to the African Cup of Nations suggests that augmenting the engine room would be a good idea for Postecoglou's side.

Rodrigo Bentancur is also out injured for ten weeks and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp are both untrusted, which opens the door for a starlet of Wharton's ilk to start making a name for himself within a squad eyeing a spot back within European competition.

Considered to be a “brilliant young prospect” by journalist Josh Bunting, Wharton would be bold to make the jump to Premier League football when he is earning his stripes in Lancashire, but for a budding star of his calibre, he need only look at the past rise of Alli after the prodigious talent made the move to London.

Wharton is more industrious – he occupies a deeper segment of the midfield – but he boasts all of the tools to flourish in the future with the Lilywhites, and Postecoglou must secure his signature to settle the equilibrium when ploughing ahead with more senior signings – moves which appear to be inevitable given the outfit's circumstances.

Sri Lanka will hop over to Scotland for two ODIs before making their trip to England and Wales for the 2019 World Cup, Cricket Scotland has confirmed in a press release. They will compete in two ODIs – on May 18 and May 21 – with the venues slated to be announced in December. The last time Sri Lanka played Scotland was before the 2017 Champions Trophy for two unofficial ODIs staged in Kent, with Scotland upsetting the visitors in a high-scoring first game. Sri Lanka, though, bounced back to level the series 1-1.Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer was excited at the announcement of a contest against a Full Member nation, and believed that playing in front of home crowds would only push the hosts to play better cricket.”There is nothing better that playing cricket at home in front of a full house of Scottish fans and we are determined to continue to improve on our recent performances,” Coetzer said. “We will be well prepared for these matches and go out to win.”We are really excited to be playing these ODIs versus another Full Member. Following our 1-1 draw in the 50-overs series last year, it will be a real challenge for us to go one better and win this ODI series.”The last ODI between the two sides in Scotland was in 2011, when a Lasith Malinga five-wicket haul skittled the hosts out for 101.The 2019 World Cup begins just nine days after the ODI series, with Sri Lanka’s first game scheduled against Afghanistan on June 4 in Cardiff.

Agarwal, Pujara and Kohli make Australia toil

Pat Cummins claimed Australia’s two wickets in a superbly wholehearted display on a largely docile Melbourne pitch

Andrew McGlashan25-Dec-2018Definitive judgments should wait for another few days, but the early signs are that there has been no magical solution to the MCG’s pitch problem. After the challenges of Adelaide, and especially Perth, this was a more docile affair for the batsmen, and India took advantage, moving to 2 for 215 on the back of a fine debut by Mayank Agarwal, followed up by solid work from Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. There was much interest in the toss, with 10 millimeters of grass left on the surface, enough to urge Tim Paine to consider bowling. But the coin fell India’s way and Kohli opted to bat while noting the dryness underneath the top layer. The talk soon began as a number of deliveries with the new ball barely carried to Paine, Nathan Lyon was on by the eighth over, there were catchers in front of the wicket within the first hour, and a slip cordon of one inside Josh Hazlewood’s first spell.Australia’s slim rewards went to the outstanding Pat Cummins, who transcended the conditions with hostile spells. He gave Hanuma Vihari, promoted to open the innings, a working over, before removing him with a poorly played short delivery, and ended Agarwal’s impressive debut innings with another short ball fended down the leg side.3:00

Laxman: Sometimes Pujara doesn’t get credit for what he does

None of Australia’s was poor – Mitchell Starc hit 150kph, Hazlewood challenged the outside edge and Mitchell Marsh provided 15 tight overs on his recall – and keeping India to a sedate scoring rate meant they were far from out of the contest. Towards the back end of the day, there was a fiery passage as Starc charged in with the second new ball, having Kohli dropped on 47 when an edge carried low to Paine’s right. There are big chances, then there was this. It was a period when Kohli looked as close to being vulnerable as he ever does, and was kept on 47 for 24 balls before the close. It is one thing being given conditions where batsmen should book in for bed and breakfast, and another to make sure you take advantage of them. There was a sense that India could be vulnerable, having completely changed their opening partnership. But while Vihari was not convincing, by the time he fended to slip, the early sting had already been take out of the day.Agarwal, a batsman who has certainly bided his time to earn the chance, shaped up excellently in his first outing. He scored the first 17 runs in the innings that came off the bat, although the first boundary of the day came from an outside edge that just evaded Mitchell Marsh at gully. Like Vihari, he was not entirely comfortable against Cummins’ short stuff, taking one on the back as he tried to duck, but was confident in his scoring options.A brace of boundaries early in the afternoon session off Nathan Lyon took him to his half-century, and he later struck the first six of the match by lofting Lyon over long-on. Thoughts were turning towards the prospect of a century on debut when he gloved a short ball from Cummins down the leg side against what became the last ball before tea. That meant Kohli walked in after the break, greeted by boos (Mitchell Marsh had also been booed by sections of the Melbourne crowd disappointed at Peter Handscomb’s omission), and as is so often, he brought greater intent to the innings. He was at a run-a-ball early in his stay before settling into a pace more akin to the day’s proceedings and becoming becalmed heading into stumps. Australia’s bowlers tried to attack in him outside off, where he can occasionally be vulnerable – Hazlewood found the edge only for it fall well short of slip, and there was the late chance offered against Starc – but Kohli was alert whenever they strayed too straight.Meanwhile, Pujara was Pujara, refusing to be moved out of his bubble. It wasn’t an entirely comfortable innings, however, with the physio twice coming out when he got struck on the gloves. Just six boundaries came during his 200-ball stay, but he remained there to continue Australia’s toil on the second day. Five innings into the series, he is already within touching distance of his most successful overseas tour.

Still could oust Sunderland’s "magic" gem by signing “amazing” £29k-p/w hero

The Sunderland rumour mill is pointing in the direction of Will Still coming in as the next Black Cats boss, despite new developments suggesting the Tyne and Wear outfit might delve back into the pool of managers available in Sweden with Jimmy Thelin also linked from IF Elfsborg.

Thelin doesn't however look a good fit for the style of football Sunderland like to play – the 45-year-old known to favour a long-ball approach as has been reported by football journalist Michael Graham – and so Still is very much in the driver's seat to be appointed soon.

If the Stade De Reims boss is chosen to be Tony Mowbray's successor, he could shake things up and make this Manchester United reserve player his first notable signing.

Amad Diallo rejoining the Black Cats under Still's tenure would also instantly win supporters over to the eclectic Belgian manager's ways, with recent reports suggesting that the Championship club are interested in making this reunion happen.

Sunderland transfers latest

TEAMtalk reported yesterday that Sunderland were keen on signing Diallo in January on loan, the dynamic Red Devils attacker loved by the Stadium of Light masses during his first glowing loan stint at the club.

The Championship promotion candidates were hopeful of extending the loan in the summer but a move never materialised, Diallo still adamant that he wanted to fight for his future at Old Trafford and make an impression on Erik ten Hag instead of being shipped out again.

Yet, with first-team minutes still limited for the Ivorian forward at the Theatre of Dreams, Diallo – who has been hampered by injury of late – could fancy returning back to the Black Cats to strut his stuff in a potential January move.

Current Sunderland first-teamer Patrick Roberts will become more and more anxious about this possible transfer becoming a reality, Roberts potentially displaced from the line-up by Still if Diallo were to join.

How Amad Diallo compares to Patrick Roberts

Both attackers on their day are known to have a skillset that means they can pull off an extraordinary strike from nowhere, Roberts hammering the ball into the net last season against Watford which proved to be crucial in their hunt for the playoffs.

Likewise, Diallo – who has been dubbed "an absolute wizard" by journalist James Copley – also has the ability to conjure up sublime moments of magic as was seen in his dramatic curled effort against Luton Town in the playoff semi-finals last season, hitting a sublime free-kick into the back of the net to level the tie in the first leg.

It saw the Ivorian described as an "amazing talent" during this first loan spell by Mowbray, Man United having previously splashed the cash on an exciting Diallo by spending £37.2m to secure his services in 2021.

As for Roberts, his powers have faded this campaign for Sunderland with the former Celtic man largely going anonymous when his team needs him to step up and be counted.

The 26-year-old only has a single assist to his name for the season to date, way off his five goals and seven assists he managed in the entirety of his last campaign in the second tier which saw him hailed at the time as "magic" by Mowbray.

Moreover, Still could take a fancy to the £29k-per-week Diallo more than Roberts in terms of the style of player he wants to work with. At Reims, the Belgian manager has garnered a reputation for getting the best out of hungry and raw young talents as was showcased in Folarin Balogun's development under the 31-year-old in Ligue 1.

Still could unearth his next Balogun by getting "talented" Sunderland gem firing

Will Still’s potential appointment as Sunderland’s next manager could see this misfiring striker at the Stadium of Light come out of his shell.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 13, 2023

Therefore, Diallo – who netted 14 goals and provided four assists in all competitions last season – could see Sunderland as an even more attractive club to rejoin with Still at the helm.

The Black Cats will have to fend off interest from table-toppers Leicester City however, according to Football Insider, but those connected to the Tyne and Wear side will be optimistic that Diallo will come back to Sunderland with unfinished business on his mind.

O FARO DO CENTROAVANTE
