The South African ace will not turn out for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan leg of the tournament because of a back problem

Lahore Qalandars will travel to Pakistan for the home stretch of the PSL without South African ace AB de Villiers. De Villiers, who had signed up for seven games of the UAE leg and two matches in Lahore, had gone back home and now, because of a back injury, wouldn’t be returning to rejoin the team.”I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in front of the passionate Pakistani cricket fans,” de Villiers said in a press statement. “I saw my doctor who has advised complete rest for two weeks and, unfortunately, that rules me out of the games in Karachi. I hope to be a part of the HBL PSL next year and very much hope to play my part in the return of international cricket to the country. I am backing Lahore Qalandars to go all the way and win the trophy this year.”The PSL’s UAE leg ends on March 5, before the last four group matches and the qualifiers and finals are held in Karachi from March 9.The games in Pakistan were initially scheduled to be split between Lahore and Karachi, from March 7, but along with the slight postponement, all games have been moved to Karachi. The decision was made keeping in mind logistical issues following recent political and military tensions between Pakistan and India.Qalandars are fourth on the PSL points table, with three wins in seven matches.

A new update has now emerged from Old Trafford, with funds looking tight this winter.

Man Utd have made contact for Timo Werner

Reliable reporters Laurie Whitwell and Dan Sheldon of The Athletic shared a Man Utd transfer update on Tuesday, looking at the club’s plans for the January window. Not a lot of money looks set to be available to Ten Hag this month, although a new centre-forward appears to be the priority target, so ‘United might squeeze out another low-cost loan’. When it came to possible additions on a temporary basis, they said on Werner:“Contact has also been made to check on the potential cost of RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, who has scored twice in eight Bundesliga games this season. Werner was on United’s radar before he moved to Chelsea in 2020. United are keeping an eye on the market for that kind of ready-made striker.” Another option named is Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy, although he is set to be at the African Cup of Nations in January.Werner, formerly of Chelsea, has come up against United four times in his career, all during his time with the Blues. He played at Old Trafford twice and drew on both occasions during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.Now back with Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Werner has scored 18 times in 54 appearances during his second spell with the club, taking his total tally to 113 goals in 213 games. (Timo Werner stats at RB Leipzig – Transfermarkt)Still 27 years of age, he appears to be a player of interest for a long time at Old Trafford, so if a loan move is an option this month, it could make sense to provide competition to the likes of Hojlund for the remainder of the campaign, following in the footsteps of Odion Ighalo in 2020 and Wout Weghorst last season when it comes to low-cost temporary options in attack ahead of the summer.

Nicolas Kuhn is about to become a Celtic player. The Hoops have agreed a £2.8m fee with Austrian club Rapid Wien to sign the winger, and all the formalities are virtually complete. Kuhn underwent a medical in London and arrived in Glasgow on Monday night to sign his contract and join his new club.

We've just crept past the halfway point of the window, and Brendan Rodgers will hope that Celtic are busy in the couple of weeks that remain. Journalist Anthony Joseph says that the Scottish Premiership leaders "aim" to acquire a left-back and a striker before this month is out, while Football Insider report that a goalkeeper is on Celtic's agenda too. That's a lot to try and get through in a mid-season window, and the latest update out of Parkhead makes for somewhat concerning reading.

Blow for Rodgers as moves all but ruled out

According to Football Scotland, rumoured goalkeeper target Caoimhin Kelleher may be too expensive. Any permanent transfer for the Liverpool man would require a "hefty outlay", and while a loan deal may be viable, Celtic would need a favourable wage split, because his existing salary wouldn't fit within their structure in its entirety.

Elsewhere, talk of a move for Estoril left-back Tiago Araujo has "gone cold" since November, and the same can be said for Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden. BK Hacken's Romeo Amane, meanwhile, "is on the club's shortlist", but Celtic view him more as a summer option than a prospective January addition, with his current employers likely to demand a huge fee to part ways this month.

Based on this report, then, we can say that the four players perhaps most prominently linked with the Hoops almost definitely won't be joining Rodgers' side this month.

Van Hooijdonk offers hope

To sound a more optimistic note, one striker target who should be available is Bologna's Sydney van Hooijdonk. Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported last Friday that he's poised to leave in the second half of the transfer window, and may have departed earlier were he not needed last weekend amid a suspension for fellow forward Joshua Zirkzee.

The newspaper expects him to end up at Celtic, following in the footsteps of his father Pierre, and they say that negotiations should proceed smoothly because both parties have something the other wants, with Bologna interested in Parkhead talent Rocco Vata. Van Hooijdonk has played very limited football this season, starting just two of his side's 20 Serie A games, so it's hard to imagine there'd be too much resistance to a sale.

This is a deal that could have a big impact too. The Dutchman scored 26 goals in 54 appearances for his previous club Heerenveen, and Celtic need a bit more firepower in their attacking ranks. Right now, midfielder Matt Riley is their joint-top scorer with ten, alongside Kyogo Furuhashi, while designated back-up Hyeon-gyu Oh has only got five, having been entrusted to play just under 700 minutes. Celtic fans, then, shouldn't be too deflated on the back of the latest news, because there will be other opportunities, even if certain priorities might need to wait until the off-season.

Two weeks down the road, their stars will be back to their respective countries for World Cup camps. Therefore, the onus is on them to start winning and stay alive in the competition.For that to happen, Royals could begin by rethinking their selection. Ben Stokes has had a poor IPL season by any standards – 76 runs in five innings, four wickets, and an economy rate of 10.84. Rahul Tripathi, batting out of position in the middle order, has managed 80 runs in four innings.

Jadeja, formerly with the Royals, is two strikes away from 100 IPL wickets. Royals’ boundary percentage of 51.01 in the first 15 overs is the lowest among all teams this season. Watson is 31 runs short of 1000 T20 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Once most of our players step up, there’s a good possibility to win the matches. I think we have been lucky, and played so well. We played well in the 2007 World Cup, and did well in a few matches in the 2011 World Cup too.”I don’t think this is our best win in terms of individual wins, but it wasn’t easy for us in these conditions. It is one of our best performances because we are away from home, and I loved the way we played today. We know that it won’t happen every day but we will take this win any day.”Mashrafe, however, warned his team-mates and fans not to go overboard with their first win in the competition with eight games remaining.”We don’t want to be too excited,” he said. “We just have two points so far, so we should just focus on our game. According to The Daily Record, Rangers are closing in on the signing of Lens attacker Oscar Cortes, snapping him up on a loan deal before deadline day's conclusion.

"Lens winger Oscar Cortes is on his way to Rangers as Philippe Clement is on the brink of landing his third January signing… reports in South America claim an agreement has been reached to sign Cortes from French Ligue 1 outfit Lens – a 20-year-old right winger.

"There will be an option to buy according to the claims and Cortes is already said to be en route to Glasgow so he can "formalise the relationship."

This is exciting news for Rangers supporters, considering Cortes is a young player with so much potential, not turning 21 until December this year. The Rangers Journal have hailed him on X, saying he is a "very promising young winger".

The young Colombian has already shown that he can make his mark in his short time in European football, scoring and assisting once apiece in four appearances for Lens, and he scored 11 goals in 25 caps for Colombia's Under-20s, prior to making one appearance for his country's senior side to date.

The fact that there is reportedly an option to buy clause in Cortes' contract is an added bonus for Rangers, meaning they could look to trigger it if he comes in and hits the ground running.
