The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed Netherlands’ international home summer with all sports banned in the country until September 1

Pakistan’s tour to the Netherlands has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was taken in light of the Dutch government’s decision to ban all sports and cultural events in the country till September 1, with KNCB confirming the country will host no international cricket this summer.Pakistan were due to visit Netherlands for a three-match ODI series before a full tour of England, with the games slated to be played in Amstelveen on 4,7 and 9 July. Netherlands were also due to host New Zealand for a one-off T20I on 15 June, but that has also been pushed back indefinitely. A quadrangular series with Namibia, Oman and the USA has also fallen victim to the pandemic.,”It is sad that we have to postpone our July tour to the Netherlands, but in the prevailing circumstances, this is absolutely the right thing to do as human lives are far more precious and valuable than a cricket match or an event,” Wasim Khan, the PCB Chief Executive, said. “Netherlands has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and we offer our heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their lives. Like any other country, the PCB stands firmly with the KNCB and hope they will be able to overcome this crisis. The Pakistan national cricket teams have always enjoyed touring the Netherlands and as soon as things return to normal, the PCB will engage with the KNCB to reschedule the tour so that we can fulfil our obligation.”KNCB chair Betty Timmer echoed Khan’s sentiments. “It is extremely disappointing that we won’t be able to host any international cricket in the Netherlands this summer,” she said. “However, the health and safety of the players, staff and fans is our main priority, and in that light the ban on events by the Dutch government is understandable. We truly hope that by next season the situation is under control again, so we can host the Super League series against England, Ireland and the West Indies as planned. We would love to welcome back all cricket fans on our grounds in the summer of 2021.”The coronavirus pandemic has shut down all cricket across the world, along with nearly all sporting activities. England’s three-Test tour of Sri Lanka was among the first to be cancelled, with a slew of other series being called off as the virus began to take hold throughout the world. An ODI series between India and South Africa was pushed back indefinitely, and New Zealand’s ODI series in Australia was postponed part-way. While there has been guarded support from some players about the possibility of playing cricket behind closed doors when the time comes, it appears there is still plenty of time before even that becomes a realistic possibility.

Dom Sibley leaves no stone unshed after admitting to fitness 'wake-up call'

Opener drops 12kg after observing fitness standards of England team-mates in Sri Lanka

George Dobell06-Jul-2020Dom Sibley has admitted he became “self-conscious” about his weight and fitness after seeing more experienced members of the England squad training.Sibley, the England opening batsman, has emerged from lockdown having shed around 12kg – more than 26lbs – through improved diet and fitness regimes. And, although he conceded he had long been told to consider losing some weight, he revealed there was a moment on the curtailed tour of Sri Lanka in March which provided the “wake-up call” required to make him turn words into action.Exhausted after a training session on a hot and humid day, he watched in awe as a group of senior players – Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler – embarked on another fitness session. It brought home to Sibley the need to improve his fitness.ALSO READ: ‘No doors closed,’ says Smith after Bairstow, Ali omissions”In Sri Lanka, for the first time in my career, I felt a little bit self-conscious about my physique and my weight,” Sibley said. “I just remember sitting on the plane and thinking ‘I need to do something’.”You look at the guys who have been in the system a long time. Just seeing how fit some of the senior guys are and how impressive they are in training… I remember being in Sri Lanka, especially with that heat, and seeing a few of the lads running after a big session and that was an eye opener for me. Ben Stokes is a bit of a freak when it comes to his training.”Actually it was seeing him, Root and Buttler running after a session in Colombo. I remember being absolutely spent so that was a real eye opener. Seeing these guys and the graft they put in to stay at this level for the amount of time they have done, is something that I want to do.”It was an opportunity for me to improve that side of my game and I’m glad to have been able to stick to it. I needed to do it. It’s great to have all the support from the backroom staff, the support’s been great and the information I’ve been given and all that has been really helpful.”While Sibley has long been, by the standards of modern international cricket, a little thicker set than most, there was no evidence that it was holding him back in South Africa earlier this year. After registering a maiden Test century in Cape Town – an unbeaten effort that lasted well over eight hours – he finished with an average of 54.00 and having faced more balls (784) than any other batsman on either side.”I’ve never felt tired batting,” Sibley said. “My fitness has never affected my batting. It’s not necessarily going to improve my batting. But it might help my agility in the field. And carrying less weight might keep me on the park for longer with fewer niggles.Dom Sibley struggled for fluency in England’s warm-up match•Stu Forster/Getty Images

“I’ve always been someone who hasn’t necessarily been the fittest in the squad. I’ve always, whether at Surrey or Warwickshire, been coasting in that aspect.”I have always prided myself in training really hard on my batting but maybe that side has not been something I have done to the best of my ability. I’ve had taps on the shoulder before and haven’t really done anything about it.”I think it was overdue having that wake-up call and a good lesson for me, regardless of whether it leads to runs. If I’d done nothing during lockdown I think I’d have got to here and thought ‘I haven’t quite ticked every box’. But I feel I’ve trained hard and I’m ready for the series. Success or failure, I feel like I’ve left no stone unturned.”It was noticeable in last week’s warm-up match that England’s quick bowlers – Jofra Archer and Mark Wood – appeared to target Sibley’s ribcage with a leg slip and short leg in place. He survived one tough chance off such a delivery in the first innings, but was caught down leg off a similar delivery a little while later as he attempted a clip off the hip; a shot that has proved hugely productive for him in county cricket. He fully expects West Indies to deliver a similar line of attack.”It was interesting in the practice match that they went with that as well so it was a good experience,” Sibley said. “In the second innings I dealt with it a bit better.”South Africa put a fielder round there [leg slip] for me. It’s somewhere I’ve scored a lot of runs in county cricket but that’s the great thing about Test cricket: you’ve always got new challenges and suddenly my strength is being turned into a way to get me out.”I’ve played the pull shot since a young age. But in South Africa, with the bouncy wickets, I didn’t feel in control of it so I chose to get out of the way of the ball. But it’s a case of managing risk and knowing when to play and not play. You’ve got to find ways to deal with it.”

Ratcliffe must banish Man Utd ace who’s worth 12x less than McTominay

It’s a well-known fact that Manchester United’s season has been appalling, yet despite the underperformance of some individuals, others have actually progressed.

One of those is Scott McTominay, who has been the hero on many occasions over his 31 Premier League appearances this campaign.

The Scott had scored a handful of crucial goals, and unless he finds the back of the net at the weekend, he will boast a tally of seven for the league season.

Due to the academy graduate’s clutch performances, he’s now become one of the most valuable assets at the club, unlike one player who’s inevitably packing his bags this summer.

Christian Eriksen’s first season at Man United

When Christian Eriksen first joined Man United at the start of Erik ten Hag’s reign, he was regarded as one of the bargains of the summer due to his arrival being a free transfer.

The Denmark international was instantly a hit, with football creator Liam Canning describing the deal as a “quality bit of business” while also stating that Eriksen was “absolutely pivotal.”

Ten Hag also shared a similar viewpoint, fielding the former Tottenham Hotspur star 28 times in the league over the campaign, mainly in a slightly deeper role alongside Casemiro.

During those matches, United’s number 14 netted just once, but he was a great source of creativity, providing eight assists, the joint-most that campaign in the squad.

Unfortunately, an injury at the end of January hindered his progress, and he’s not been able to reach similar heights since.

What Christian Eriksen is worth in 2024

This term, Eriksen also began the campaign in the first eleven after an injury to Mason Mount, scoring and assisting in his first two starts against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, which are still his only league contributions this season.

But as time went by, his involvement in the side plummeted, with an injury and the rise of Kobbie Mainoo keeping him on the sidelines for a long spell.

Christian Eriksen

During the entire month of February, the experienced technician didn’t start a single game, sitting on the bench without getting a solitary minute in five straight matches.

Overall this term, the 32-year-old has only started 12 matches in the league, which has played a huge role in his current market value dropping to just £4m, according to CIES’ Football Observatory.

This now means that Eriksen is the lowest-valued midfielder in the current United team and worth 12 times less than McTominay, for example, which is rather mind-blowing.

Sadly, given his age and declining athleticism – hence why Canning recently named him a “passenger" – Eriksen’s value is extremely unlikely to take an upward trajectory.

Furthermore, according to Capology, the ex-Brentford ace has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly keen to sell him this summer before he leaves on a free.

Overall, the Dane has become surplus to requirements at United, and that’s only set to worsen ahead of next season when Mount returns and the transfer market concludes.

Man Utd can now end Casemiro experiment by starting their teen sensation

The Man United prospect has only started three Premier League games this season.

Tournament hubs, Afghanistan Test and Boxing Day: where does the Australia summer stand?

Key issues that need to be resolved as a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic causes travel restrictions around the country

This remains the crucial part of Australia’s season with A$300 million – the financial health of the game – riding on it taking place. The chances of a traditional Test series across four venues appears to be receding with the Boxing Day Test at the MCG looking under threat. To ease the biosecurity protocols that will be needed – and state-by-state requirements to quarantine – it could be that the matches are staged in fewer locations while there is likely to be consideration given to what size crowds are allowed. Fans have returned to stadiums for winter codes in Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales amid various restrictions on capacity. The Adelaide Oval will have its on-site hotel completed by October and has already been talked of as a training hub while Perth, who missed on hosting India in the initial fixture list, may yet be part of the series. Following the Tests there is a three-match ODI series pencilled in for mid-January which currently has games in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. The India Women’s team is also due to tour in January for three ODIs which are due to act as a lead-in to the ODI World Cup in February.Afghanistan TestThe Perth Stadium has successfully hosted India and New Zealand Tests over the past two seasons•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

The international fixtures that had been scheduled early in the season have steadily dropped away with series against Zimbabwe and West Indies postponed. The T20Is against India scheduled for mid-October also won’t take place now the T20 World Cup has been moved and the IPL has its window. The next big question for CA is the one-off Test against Afghanistan slated for Perth on November 21 which they remain committed to staging. However, the time frame created by the IPL and the need for players to quarantine for two weeks on return to Australia is very tight, especially for anyone featuring in the closing stages of the competition, unless those in contention for the Test from both sides leave the UAE early to allow 14 days in Perth ahead of the match. Even if that was possible there would need to be exemptions granted to allow players to train although with hotels very close to the grounds this could be feasible.State cricketPeter Nevill and Phil Jaques with the Sheffield Shield•Getty Images

In some ways, this is the biggest headache for Cricket Australia given the logistical challenges of competitions that are vital to the game’s ecosystem but do not generate revenue. Particularly problematic is how to formulate a Sheffield Shield – the ten-game season and final can’t be cut back without agreement with the Australian Cricketers’ Association as it’s part of the MoU – amid travel and border restrictions. The hub concept is tougher and much costlier for a first-class competition but a whole range of scenarios remain on the table. A report said starting the tournament earlier and rushing through a set of matches ahead of the Test summer was one idea, to ensure players had a chance to prepare or push for selection, while at the other end there is the possibility of limited Shield cricket before Christmas with the season then back-filled after the BBL.The men’s and women’s one-day competitions – the Marsh Cup and WNCL – would appear vulnerable at the moment although players have made it clear they are open to the idea of hubs. The WNCL is especially important this year if the Women’s ODI World Cup goes ahead as played next February and March in New Zealand.WBBLBrisbane Heat pose with the Women’s Big Bash League trophy•Getty Images

This will be the first of the marquee competitions to be staged in the season with the tournament due to begin on October 17 but is likely to need some reorganisation. When the fixtures were announced, the competition had already headed towards a hub model with a three-week block of matches in Sydney, and weekend blocks of matches elsewhere, but with New South Wales at a crucial stage of trying to limit their Covid-19 numbers – and significant restrictions around travel into the state – it could be that Queensland or Western Australia become the major centres with Tasmania also putting their hat in the ring to host a hub. There remains confidence that the overseas players will be able to take up their deals as planned although a potential curveball has been thrown by the BCCI’s announcement of the T20 Challenge in early November which came in for strong criticism from a number of players led by Alyssa Healy.BBLJosh Hazlewood celebrates with his teammates after taking the wicket of Pete Handscomb•Getty Images

There is a little more time up Cricket Australia’s sleeve for the Big Bash, but with the tenth edition to be the longest tournament – running from early December to early February – it could be hugely demanding if Covid-19 restrictions remain. Unlike the WBBL, the initial fixtures featured the full home-and-away model which involves regular travel and, even in the extended tournament, quick turnarounds between matches which would not be possible under the current quarantine requirements imposed by the various states. The need to hub the competition will have to be considered as well as the flexibility to change mid-tournament if Covid-19 cases spike in a state. If there arises a need to reschedule or move matches in the BBL, it will add another layer of complexity given it runs concurrently with the major part of the men’s international season.

Maresca set to hand youngster chance to impress, but Chelsea want £30m sale

New Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is set to hand one youngster the chance to impress in west London, but the club have their heart set on selling.

Maresca confirmed as Chelsea manager with plans in motion

Earlier this week, Maresca was officially unveiled as Chelsea's head coach, following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino who left by mutual consent.

The Italian arrives with a growing reputation, which has been helped by his history working under Pep Guardiola as an assistant at Man City. Maresca guided Leicester City to the Championship title in his first season away from Eastlands, which turned the heads of Chelsea chiefs.

Maresca is now setting plans in motion to improve the Chelsea squad after making the move to Stamford Bridge and is also planning to make Cole Palmer the vocal point of his attack (John Percy).

He'll already have his favoured players and formation firmly in mind, such is his reputation as a meticulous tactician. Certain members of the squad face uncertain futures as well, but it will be interesting to see how Maresca looks to introduce Chelsea's youngster players.

The Cobham academy has produced an array of talents in recent years, and Chelsea's youth development system is arguably one of the best in England. Attacking midfielder Omari Hutchinson could certainly be added to that list, with TEAMtalk sharing an update on his future.

Hutchinson set for Maresca chance but Chelsea want sale

As per their information, Maresca is set to hand young Hutchinson a chance to impress at Chelsea in pre-season. However, club chiefs are practically dead-set on selling the player, as they believe he could accumulate £30 million.

The Englishman, speaking to Sky Sports in an interview, revealed how futsal developed him into an entertaining flair player.

"I like to entertain the crowd," said Hutchinson on his playing style.

"When I was a kid I loved watching the likes of Neymar, Ronaldinho, Romario, Messi and Coutinho on YouTube. And always in different positions because I used to play everywhere across the front three.

"Playing futsal was probably when I was happiest. It was so fun. I was always learning new tricks, learning how to get out of tight situations, receiving the ball in different ways – with the sole, either side of my foot, or doing flip-flaps.

"It helped me massively with my technique. I think a lot of kids should play it. It will help their game as they get older."

The 20-year-old, who spent last season on a temporary spell at Ipswich and helped Kieran McKenna's side secure promotion to the Premier League, made 44 Championship appearances at Portman Road. Just under half came as full starts, with Hutchinson bagging 10 goals and five assists in the process.
