Marnus Labuschagne hits another hundred but New South Wales strike back

Marnus Labuschagne made it two centuries in his first two innings of the season on a compelling day against New South Wales, highlighted by his duels with Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.A fifth-wicket stand of 136 between Labuschagne and Jimmy Peirson lifted Queensland from 4 for 115 although New South Wales struck late with the second new ball, including the wicket of Labuschagne in the final over of the day to Trent Copeland, to even up the contest. In his first outing of the season Starc claimed two wickets, but Lyon went wicketless through 15 overs and was dominated by Labuschagne. In the 41 deliveries Lyon bowled to him, Labuschagne scored 44 runs which included consecutive reverse sweeps to reach his century from 151 balls. His contest with Starc had been equally good viewing as the left-arm quick tried to ruffle his Australia team-mate. He struck Labuschagne on the shoulder with the final delivery of the morning session – with Labuschagne’s response to just turn and walk off for lunch – and then in the afternoon gave him a warning for backing up. “If I have to keep my foot behind the line, the batters can keep their bat behind the line,” Starc said. “I’ve never taken the stumps and appealed for it, but if they are going to keep doing it I may have to change my approach.”Labuschagne was within two deliveries of being able to resume his innings on the second morning but missed a straight delivery from Copeland as Queensland lost 3 for 22 to the new ball in the final eight overs on a day of high-quality cricket. The Queensland openers had laid a solid platform after being put into bat until Bryce Street edged to third slip in the 18th over. Test opener Joe Burns got himself set before a loose dismissal, top edging a half-hearted pull.Sean Abbott followed that by producing a beauty to trim Usman Khawaja’s off stump, then Starc got his season up and running by finding Matt Renshaw’s edge. But Labuschagne had got himself set and found an impressive partner in Peirson for a stand that occupied 37 overs. Peirson’s innings was given a kickstart as he took 14 off an over against Starc – the same one in which Labuschagne had his warning – although he did not know much about the top-edged short ball which flew over the keeper for six.His half-century came from 87 deliveries and when he and Labuschagne were present for the second new ball, they looked like they would see out the day. However, Peirson gloved Starc down the leg side with the bowler convinced he had a repeat dismissal against Jack Wildermuth, and replays suggested the batsman was lucky to survive, but he was soon pinned lbw by Copeland.

Watford contact Champions League side about signing "talented" £32k-p/w man

After a 15th placed finish in the Championship last season, Watford are now looking to bring in fresh faces in order to aid their surge up the table in the next campaign.

Watford want to build around Cleverley

After Valerien Ismael was relieved of his duties back in March, Watford took a chance on former player Tom Cleverley to act as the club's interim manager. Whilst this role was the 34-year-old's first in senior management, Cleverley immediately hit the ground running, picking up significant points against the likes of Leeds United and Ipswich Town as the Hornets finished comfortably mid-table.

Given the permanent role at the end of April, Watford are now set to use the summer transfer window to build a squad in the image of their new manager

Watford manager Tom Cleverley

The Hornets' recent retained list saw a number of players shown the door at Vicarage Road in order to make room for new signings.

Watford cut ties with three first team players at the end of the season, including Jake Livermore who called time on his spell with the Hornets after one season with the club. Livermore was joined by goalkeeper Ben Hamer and 28-year-old forward Ashley Fletcher on the list of names set to exit the club.

With outgoings out of the way, the Hornets can now look towards new signings as Watford make contact to sign a defender from a Champions League club.

Hornets make request to sign Milan man

As first reported by Sport Witness, Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that Watford are making an approach for AC Milan full back Fodé Ballo-Toure. The Hornets are reportedly interested in bringing the 27-year-old to Vicarage Road this summer and with just one year left on his current deal, it could be in Milan's best interest to cash in.

The Senegalese international has been something of a European journeyman in recent years enjoying spells in France, Italy and England. Ballo-Toure's time in England saw him spend last season on loan with Fulham, however the 27-year-old managed just 8 appearances for the Cottagers.

Despite enduring something of a torrid spell at Craven Cottage, Ballo-Toure arrived at the club with high expectations. Upon agreeing to join the West London outfit, Fulham's Director of Football Operations Tony Khan spoke highly of the defender telling the club's website: “He's a talented left-back with great experience, and his arrival will strengthen the depth of the squad.

“We’re pleased that Fodé has joined Marco’s squad and is ready to compete for us in the Premier League."

ballo-toure-premier-league-everton-transfers

With Ballo-Toure set to become a free agent next summer, AC Milan will likely view this summer as the last chance to cash in on the player. The Senegalese international currently commands a weekly wage of £32,500 per week as per capology, which the Rossoneri will likely want off the books.

This desire to let the player go alongside Watford's well-known history with the Italian league should play into the Hornets' hands as they could get their man for a bargain price.

Marnus Labuschagne puts hand up to open in David Warner's absence

He played an important hand in the second ODI to help build on Steven Smith’s barnstorming hundred

Daniel Brettig30-Nov-20202:46

Moody: Hazlewood, Zampa difference between two attacks

Coming from Test cricket’s first ever concussion substitute, it was perhaps not a surprise to hear Marnus Labuschagne quickly putting up his hand to offer to open in place of the injured David Warner for the third and final ODI against India in Canberra on Wednesday. That said, Labuschagne’s eagerness to slip up to the top of the order from the No. 4 spot he is quickly making his own for Australia in the 50-over game reflected the burgeoning confidence of a home side that have clattered India for scores of 374 and 389 in the opening two games, a product of sound top order platforms to allow Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell to launch themselves from with something approaching abandon. On Sunday they were aided significantly by Labuschagne’s “read the game” innings of 70, in which he afforded Smith and Maxwell plenty of the strike but also delivered a powerful blow or two of his own as Virat Kohli’s tourists lurched to a series defeat in the space of their opening two games of the Australian summer. In that context, it was understandable for any member of the Australian top six to want to move higher up the order, not just for runs now, but also to set down a marker ahead of the Test series.ALSO WATCH: Full match highlights (Indian subcontinent only)”Certainly if I got asked to open the batting absolutely it’s an opportunity that I would enjoy doing. We’ll wait and see how our team shapes up for the next game and see the balance of the side, but yeah I would love doing it,” Labuschagne said. “My role at No.4 is just to read the situation of the game and play my role accordingly.”We had Steve in so when I came to the crease it was just about building a partnership and a bit of momentum with him, and taking a back seat for the start of my innings. When he was dismissed then me and Maxy could play a bit more expansively. It was really nice to be able to do the job at the back of the innings, which is something that I haven’t had too many opportunities at. But I definitely think it’s very important that I read the game and understand the situation of the game and play accordingly.Marnus Labuschagne paddles Jasprit Bumrah•Getty Images

“Cricket’s a massive confidence game and even though it’s a different format, it still gives you a lot of confidence when you’re scoring runs consistently and the way Steve and Davey are batting currently, I’ve got no doubt they’ll be able to transfer that into the Test summer. But right now there’s still a lot of games to be played before that, we’ve just got to make sure we finish this one-day series well and then straight into the T20s where we start really well.”Labuschagne has batted alongside Smith in a range of contrasting scenarios already, from the tough conditions in the 2019 Ashes to the short-ball attacks from New Zealand last summer. But he had never seen Smith attack quite so brutally as he did in the two SCG innings, where the second of his 62-ball centuries was achieved dispute a bout of morning vertigo that had left him momentarily doubting his ability to take the field.ALSO READ: Steven Smith and Australia turn batting masterclass into Groundhog Day”That was one of the best innings I’ve seen in one-day cricket, not only from Steve but from anyone,” Labuschagne said. “I think the way he batted yesterday was superb. It almost felt like he didn’t give an opportunity, didn’t really take any risk, but he got a hundred off 62 balls.”When someone’s doing that, that’s kind of scary. It was really nice to build that partnership with him, 136, it was just nice to keep ticking it over and we were really busy through that middle part when we came together, then towards the back end Steve really took the game on and that’s how we got 390. They’re two very big scores in the last two games, thanks obviously to Steve.”As for the undoubted contrast between Australia’s largely energetic performances and the struggles of India, Labuschagne acknowledged that playing at home and having a portion of the squad present for the early round of the Sheffield Shield was an advantage.”It definitely helps to have a few games under your belt just to get the pace and the timing of the game from T20s to one-dayers to four-day cricket,” he said. “But a lot of these players we’re talking about, they’ve been doing it for a long time, they’re not new to the changes of format. I’d be surprised if they didn’t shift back into gear very quickly. In say that it’s a slight advantage, four out of our top six have been playing Shield cricket and got that rhythm as a batting group.”

Celtic closing in on new signing who could be Rodgers’ next Tielemans

Celtic have not made a signing since the summer transfer window officially opened for business in the middle of last month but that could be about to change in the coming days or weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is no stranger to utilising the loan market to his advantage during his career as a manager and did so to great effect last season with the Hoops.

Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah were brought in on loan from Benfica and Norwich City respectively and both played a key role on the pitch, which was illustrated when they combined for the winning goal in the SFA Cup final at Hampden Park in May.

The Scottish giants are now reportedly close to landing a deal to bring one of them back to Parkhead on a permanent basis for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Celtic closing in on £6m agreement

According to Football Insider, the Hoops are close to agreeing a transfer to sign Bernardo from Benfica after his promising loan stint in Glasgow last term.

The report claims that talks are advancing between the two clubs and that there is a confidence from Celtic's end that they can get a move over the line before the end of the window.

It also states that Rodgers gave the board the green light to pursue a permanent swoop for the Portugal U21 international and that a fee of £6m is likely to be the figure agreed for the talented midfielder.

This comes shortly after it was reported that the Hoops had entered into talks with Benfica to attempt to sign the midfielder for £4m, which suggests that they have now compromised on that and moved closer to the Liga Portugal side's valuation.

Bernardo could now become Youri Tielemans 2.0 for Rodgers, who managed the Belgian magician during their time together at Leicester City.

Why Paulo Bernardo could be Youri Tielemans 2.0

The Foxes had snapped the Monaco ace up on loan for the second half of the 2018/19 campaign in January 2019, a month before they appointed the Northern Irishman from Parkhead.

Tielemans produced three goals and four assists in 13 Premier League starts during that loan stint before Leicester secured him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2019.

The Belgium international went on to rack up 28 goals and 25 assists in 184 appearances in all competitions for Rodgers, including a winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Bernardo, who was hailed as a "baller" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could now be Tielemans 2.0 for the manager as another talented midfielder who can chip in with goals and assists signed on a permanent deal after a promising loan spell.

As you can see in the table above, the Portuguese whiz's form in the Scottish Premiership was not too dissimilar to Tielemans' form in the Premier League during his first stint at the King Power, with six goal contributions in 11 starts compared to seven in 13.

Both players are central midfielders who look to push forward to make an impact at the top end of the pitch as scorers and creators of goals, as shown by their respective statistics.

Therefore, Rodgers could repeat the blinder he played with the Belgian star by signing Bernardo permanently and helping him to become a consistent contributor from midfield over the years to come at Parkhead.

Contact made: Celtic set for talks to sign "high level" Maeda upgrade

The Scottish Premiership season is only a matter of weeks away from kicking off and Celtic are preparing to host Kilmarnock at Parkhead on the opening day.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to win the top-flight title for the second year in succession, and what would be the fourth year of dominance for the club.

The Northern Irish head coach won the Premiership title and the SFA Cup in his first season back at Parkhead last year, after replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout.

Rodgers now has over a month to go in the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business last month, to make additions to his side to kick on and win more silverware in the 2024/25 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is reportedly set to join on a free transfer, having left Anderlecht, to become the new number one, following Joe Hart's retirement at the end of last term.

The Scottish giants are also looking to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch, though, and are reportedly keen to add a new winger to the group.

Celtic's pursuit of electric winger

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Premiership champions are interested in a summer swoop to sign Royal Antwerp FC attacker Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

The reporter claims that the Hoops have already made contact with the player's representatives to discuss a possible deal to bring the winger to Glasgow before the window slams shut at the end of August.

He adds that the two clubs are expected to enter into talks to negotiate a transfer fee for the young forward, which suggests that their conversations with his agents went well and that they have been encouraged to speak with Antwerp.

Tavolieri does not, however, reveal how much the Pro League side would want in order to let go of the 23-year-old wizard ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The journalist also does not state whether or not there are other clubs interested in signing the right-footed talent, which means that it remains to be seen how difficult this potential deal could be for the Hoops.

However, this news that Celtic are set for talks with Antwerp suggests that the club have a serious interest in the forward and that they are now prepared to formalise it with an approach, and possible bid, in an attempt to bring him to Scotland.

If the Hoops can get a deal over the line for Balikwisha then they could land an exciting upgrade on current Bhoys left winger Daizen Maeda.

Why Celtic need a Daizen Maeda upgrade

The Japan international does bring positive qualities to the pitch with his outstanding work ethic in and out of possession for the Scottish giants.

Rodgers said that his presence on the pitch is akin to having "two players" due to his fantastic work rate, and he made 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game to win possession back for his side in the Premiership last term to back up that claim.

However, he is an attacking player and operates down the left flank for Celtic and that means that the Japanese forward must offer a big threat in the final third to go alongside his superb defensive work.

Celtic forward Daizen Maeda.

Unfortunately, Maeda struggles at the top end of the pitch and that is evident in his statistics from the Premiership and the Champions League during the 2023/24 campaign.

The 26-year-old attacker only managed six goals and four assists in 32 appearances across those two competitions for the Hoops under Rodgers.

As you can see in the table above, he offered a very average threat as a scorer and provided very little from a creative perspective, with a key pass every other game across those 32 matches.

In the Premiership, Maeda scored six goals from 8.78 xG and only Kyogo Furuhashi (-4.39) underperformed his expected tally by more than him within the Celtic squad, which illustrates how wasteful he was in front of goal.

Rodgers could now land an upgrade on the Japanese winger by swooping to sign a player who works hard defensively whilst offering more as a scorer and a creator on the flank.

Why Michel-Ange Balikwisha is a Daizen Maeda upgrade

Firstly, the 23-year-old ace is a right-footed left winger and this means that he can play in the role that Maeda currently occupies for the Scottish giants.

Secondly, Balikwisha has the defensive work rate and nous to replace the work the current Hoops forward provides, based on his statistics in the Pro League last season.

He ranked within the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for both tackles (2.83) and interceptions (1.06) per 90, whilst the talented youngster also ranked within the top 28% for blocks (1.21) per 90.

This shows that the Antwerp wizard is a hard-working forward who does not shirk his defensive responsibilities out wide and is willing to put the hard yards in to either press high to win possession back or to drop in and help his full-back out, like Maeda.

As you can see in the table above, Balikwisha is also a threat at the top end of the pitch with his ability to score and create goals from a left wing position.

He outperformed his xG in the Pro League for Antwerp, whilst Maeda underperformed his, and made three times as many key passes per game in comparison to the Hoops speedster.

These statistics suggest that Balikwisha, who was hailed as a "high level" dribbler by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide more to Rodgers at the top end of the pitch as he is the superior finisher of the two and significantly more creative, whilst still offering defensive quality.

Therefore, the Belgian magician could come in as an instant upgrade on Maeda if he can translate that form from his home country over to Scottish football.
