'Are the other guys worth any less? No' – Aaron Phangiso frustrated with non-selection and non-payment

The spinner didn’t play a single game at the 2014 T20 World Cup or the 2015 50-over World Cup

Aaron Phangiso played a key role in advocating for South Africa’s reserve players to be paid a portion of match fees to ensure that those who do not play many matches on tour, such as himself, are compensated. Phangiso, who was part of South African squads from 2013 to 2018, could have played in 97 international matches but only featured in 37. He did not play a single game at the 2014 T20 World Cup or 2015 50-over World Cup, growing frustrated with both non-selection and non-payment. Speaking at Cricket South Africa’s Social Justice and Nation-Building hearings, he explained how he campaigned for reserve players to be paid as well.”If you were wearing a bib, there was one match allocated to four players. I went and spoke to our team manager and told him I have got a problem with this. I told him that on tour I am one of the few guys that miss out on a whole lot of games and we need to relook at this,” Phangiso said, detailing one chapter of the five he submitted to the SJN.”The team manager saw reason and said, ‘let me speak to the senior guys in the team and see how we can rectify this.’ I had a meeting with two senior players and said this is where I stand. The response that I got was shocking. It just showed that people will always think for themselves. The response I got was, ‘Phangi, you expect that a guy sitting on the bench must get the same amount?’ And I said, ‘Yes, why not? How does that affect you as a player? It’s not coming out of your salary. I got into a lengthy discussion with them and I showed them reason and they did see a bit of reason and they said yes, we will go back and talk to SACA (the South African Cricketers’ Association). Two days later, the guys came back to me and said they spoke to SACA and the best that we can do is to add an extra match fee. Instead of four guys sharing one match fee, they were sharing two. I still don’t think it’s fair. You can play only XI. Are the other guys worth any less? No. That’s how I feel.”ESPNcricinfo has confirmed that South Africa’s match fees per game were increased from 12 to 13 in the 2018 MoU signed between Cricket South Africa and the SACA – which governs, among other things, player salaries, and that this has been increased again, to 14 match fees, to cater for bigger squads during the Covid-19 pandemic. South African players’ match fees are R25,000 (US$1,700) per ODI and R12,500 (US$850) per T20I, which means bench players’ amounts had increased in ODIs from R6250 (US$425) to R12500 (US$850) and T20Is from R3125 (US$213) to R6250 (US$425) in the time Phangiso played to R16,666 (US$1140) and R8333 (US$570) since November 2019.By then, it was too late for Phangiso, who last represented South Africa in 2018 and said in the hearings he felt he should have played more. He narrated numerous incidents of being told to “wait for your time,” as a specialist spinner in a cricketing landscape that favoured quicks. But he expressed confusion about not getting a game at the 2014 World Cup, which was played in Bangladesh, and only playing two of South Africa’s four matches at the 2016 T20 World Cup, in India.Phangiso said he understood he was considered next in line to Imran Tahir but felt there were instances when they could have played together, as they did at the Lions franchise. “I understand Imran was doing well. But in games Imran and I played together we dominated and did well as a combination.” Phangiso said.Related

CSA begins hearings on racial discrimination

His biggest disappointment, however, was the 2015 World Cup where he also didn’t play a game despite South Africa qualifying for the knockouts, with a group game to spare. Phangiso revealed he felt isolated on that tour but also suffered some of the aftermath of South Africa’s exit.”I was happy to go to a World Cup again, thinking I would get the chance to contribute, but going into the tournament as the only (black) African player was also tough. I am not sure a lot the public can relate to what it’s like being the only person of your own race,” he said. “You are away from home. We are there for more than a month-and-a-half, all alone, no game time, no nothing. And then to come home and know you have disappointed everyone. People ask if you think you are not good enough to play and what happened? You get into a mental state, I wouldn’t say depression, but it’s exhausting.”Like the other participants at the SJN Hearings, Phangiso also spoke extensively about racial discrimination he endured as a player, especially in the early days of his career. Phangiso started playing in the South African domestic set-up in 2004, when transformation targets demanded all franchises field four players of colour in their XIs and all provincial teams, five.”You would just be there as a number. There were times when one would take the field and not do the discipline one specialises in,” he said, recounting an incident from a match in 2005 when he only bowled five overs out of more than 110 for Northerns.”I was on the field for three days and I didn’t bowl (much) and I actually started crying on the field and my current coach (Mandla Mashimbyi of Northerns) came to me and said: ‘don’t worry, all will be fine, you will get your turn’. Those are the words we tell ourselves: ‘keep pushing the struggle’.”The SJN hearings are due to run for the next two weeks after which transformation ombudsman Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, will produce a report and recommendations to CSA.

Alongside Gabriel: Arsenal star who made 0 passes all game bullied Man City

Mikel Arteta, what have you done to this Arsenal team? 20 odd years ago fans of the club the world over were in agony over the style of football Jose Mourinho brought to Chelsea.

How dare he park the bus? How dare he not attack? How dare his Chelsea side bring the dark arts into English football.

You may well argue that Arsenal have more pizzazz to them than Mourinho’s Blues but their performance against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon was full of plenty of dark arts.

Not long ago this Gunners team had a soft underbelly. They were too easy to rough up and push aside. They are anything but that now.

Arsenal came to the Etihad wanting to put their stamp on the game and they duly did that through Riccardo Calafiori’s screamer and Gabriel’s aggressive header.

However, their plans unravelled in an instant when Leandro Trossard received a second yellow card and was sent off for ‘delaying the restart’ having belted the ball away after showing Bernardo Silva to the ground. Not again Arsenal fans were thinking.

Just weeks on from Declan Rice’s controversial red for something similar, they were on the end of more dubious officiating.

Yes, this was more of a red than Rice’s incident against Brighton but Jeremy Doku just moments earlier had gone unpunished for kicking the ball away. Anyway, let’s not get bogged down by the officiating.

As City and Arsenal battled it out to a 2-2 draw, it was a Herculean effort from a team containing just ten players in the second half.

Arteta’s side stood firm, they stood resolute but unfortunately could not hold on in the dying embers as John Stones bundled the ball home. And breathe. What a contest that was.

Still, those in red and white must be praised for their efforts, notably Gabriel.

Gabriel's performance in numbers

Only a few years ago the Brazilian was noted as a defender who had a mistake in him. True enough. He was rash and capable of a moment of chaos but he has eradicated that from his game and now looks like one of the foremost defenders on the continent. In short, he is among the very elite this game has to offer.

Alongside William Saliba, they are on their way to going down in the history books as one of the best defensive partnerships we’ve seen in Premier League history. They must, of course, win the title first to go down as such.

Gabriel, however, deserves praise right at this very moment. So often the bridesmaid to that man Saliba, he has entered his season with almost something to prove. He has a bruising header of the ball and has shown as such in back-to-back away games.

He scored the winner against Spurs and very nearly scored the winner against City, brushing Kyle Walker aside and powering a header into the net from Bukayo Saka’s corner.

Yes, he may have conceded twice and his positioning could have been better for Erling Haaland’s inevitable goal but he was a titan in the second half, making five clearances and winning four duels.

Calafiori, the scorer of the equaliser wasn’t bad either. Making his first start for the Londoners, he scored a brilliant first-half goal and left the game having completed 94% of his passes, the best figure of any Arsenal starter.

That said, another of the backline deserves equal praise, Jurrien Timber.

Timber's performance in numbers

The Dutchman cruelly missed most of last season having sustained a horrific ACL injury on the opening match of the 2023/24 campaign.

So, to coin an old cliche, he was like a new signing when returning to full fitness in pre-season. How good has he been too? Fielded at left-back in the opening few weeks of 2024/25, he deputised at right-back on Sunday in place of Ben White who did eventually come on in the second half.

It would appear as though White now has a battle on his hands to win back that place as Timber was sublime.

Remarkably, he failed to complete a single pass during the whole match but he stood firm in defence and proved to be a useful asset down the right-hand side too.

As Football.London’s Kaya Kaynak put it, handing the defender an 8/10 rating, he ‘kept Doku quiet for the vast majority of the first half and when Savinho switched to his side in the second period, the Brazilian got no joy’.

Jeremy Doku and Savinho are particularly tricky wingers to deal with but Timber made it look easy, only being dribbled past once, making three tackles and winning four of his seven ground duels according to Sofascore.

He has been brilliant in an inverted left-back role in recent weeks but he may well have just found a home for himself on the right side of defence. He simply has to keep his place for the next league game.

Slot benches Nunez in predicted Liverpool lineup vs Wolves

Liverpool thumped West Ham United for five earlier this week to advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, but heads swivelled back to Premier League action with haste.

A trip to Molineux is forthcoming. Wolverhampton Wanderers will host Arne Slot’s Reds as they look to claim their first top-flight victory of the campaign. It’s been a disappointing one, so far. But Wolves are a volatile beast on their day and Liverpool will need to be wary of a slip against a side that has been competitive throughout their wretched early run.

The travelling Reds, however, are equipped to defeat the Old Gold and bouncing from such an emphatic victory against West Ham on Wednesday evening. It was a game that saw Slot ring the changes – nine, to be precise – and thus Liverpool are a restive bunch right now, desperate to win once again in the league and keep the pressure on Manchester City, who are a single point ahead in first place.

Let’s have a look at what Slot’s got in store for us this time…

1 GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

It’s a funny thing that Liverpool boast arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in Alisson Becker, but that whenever he falls to injury, there’s only a passing sense of alarm before supporters sit back down and exhale a breath of release.

Why? Oh, Caoimhin Kelleher, of course. The Ireland shot-stopper has been described as “the best no.2 in the world” by Jurgen Klopp, who’s probably on to something there.

Slot said that Alisson is almost ready to return, but why take a risk, especially with Champions League football returning next week.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

Concerns around Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation rumble on, but you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be as influential as ever on Saturday afternoon.

The Scouse-born right-back has been a creative genius under Slot’s management, starting to shape into the complete package that Liverpool simply cannot let leave.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Having been rested last time out, Ibrahima Konate will be hoping to return with a bang for Liverpool and continue to put the pressure on Manchester City, who will have played at Newcastle United earlier on Saturday and might, maybe, possibly, drop points.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool got off to a shaky start against West Ham but ran rampant in the end, though the absence of Virgil van Dijk at the back was keenly felt, with his organisation, command and composure simply irreplaceable.

The skipper needed a breather, though, and will be crucial in nullifying Wolves’ bite at Molineux.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Kostas Tsimikas’ performance against the Hammers left plenty to be desired, and now Andy Robertson must return to the starting line-up.

He lost the ball 19 times: Slot must drop 6/10 Liverpool man after West Ham

He’s not good enough for a regular starting role…

The Scotland captain is crisper in possession and a high-class dribbler, with a playmaking game that puts him joint-first – alongside Alexander-Arnold – for the most assists from a defender in Premier League history (59).

6 CM – Ryan Gravenberch

Ryan Gravenberch for Liverpool

Another who was rested ahead of the looming Premier League clash, Ryan Gravenberch has been one of the best players in English football this term, finally taking that prodigious potential and shaping it into something coherent.

Occupying a deeper and more dynamic role than under Klopp’s wing, he’s been brilliant and will be once again tomorrow.

7 CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

Watch the game, and you won’t see Alexis Mac Allister, but watch Mac Allister… oh, watch Mac Allister and you see everything – or was that about someone else?

There’s a ring of truth to the aphorism though, to be sure. Mac Allister makes things tick, reads the game like a scholar, strikes like a serpent and tackles like a titan. He’s everything and more, and he will be too much for Wolves to contain.

8 RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah against Ipswich Town

Mohamed Salah was on a three-match goal drought but scored a thumping goal off the bench against the Irons to make it four goals and assists apiece from seven matches this season, not bad going.

Interestingly, he’s only scored once across his past six fixtures against the Old Gold and will want to put that right at Molineux.

9 AM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai for Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai was handed a well-deserved rest for the Carabao Cup action but will return to the number ten spot for this one. The Hungarian needs to add more goals and assists to his game but is so effective for Slot’s side, averaging 2.2 key passes and 5.4 ball recoveries per top-flight outing this year, as per Sofascore.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz celebrates

Luis Diaz has been a revelation this season. He was ever-present and energetic last year, but this iteration of the Colombian winger brings a potency unseen at Anfield over the past few years.

Diaz is loving life under Slot and it’s reflected through his performances so far, having posted five goals from as many matches in the Premier League. Wolves will be worried about how to contain him.

97% pass accuracy: Chelsea’s 100-touch star failed his big audition vs Gent

High-flying Chelsea continued their impressive start to life under new boss Enzo Maresca by seeing off a spirited Gent side in Conference League action on Thursday evening, with the much-changed hosts running out 4-2 winners at Stamford Bridge.

Fresh from having seen off Brighton and Hove Albion by the same scoreline on Saturday afternoon, the west Londoners showcased the depth of their firepower to deliver once again last night, despite the absence of the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho and, of course, Cole Palmer.

Leaving the Englishman out of the squad for the first stage of this competition may have been a bold call, although Maresca appears to have more than enough quality at his disposal to make up for it, with both Pedro Neto and Christopher Nkunku notably getting on the scoresheet – the latter man now boasting seven goals in total so far this season.

The night also saw Renato Veiga and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall register their first goals for the club against the Belgian visitors, with the pair no doubt making a strong statement amid the desire to force their way into the manager’s Premier League XI.

Chelsea's best performers vs Gent

The man who kicked things off with a well-taken header at the back post, summer signing Veiga made his presence felt in that inverted left-back berth, notably racking up four key passes, while also completing 100% of his attempted dribbles, as per Sofascore.

The 21-year-old has been restricted to just one top-flight start so far this season, although on the evidence of his most recent performance, he could well represent a firm threat to Marc Cucurella on the left flank moving forward.

Enzo Fernandez is another who may also soon be fearing for his place in the midfield ranks, if Dewsbury-Hall’s form is anything to go by, with the £30m addition from Leicester City having been masterful in the centre of the park.

Dewsbury-Hall

Not only did he react quickly to slot home late on, but the playmaker was also integral to everything that was good about the hosts, successfully completing all three of his dribble attempts and winning six of his eight ground duels.

The same cannot be said of the man next to him, however, with midfield colleague Cesare Casadei failing his big audition on what was a sticky outing for the promising Italian.

Casadei's game in numbers vs Gent

The 21-year-old – who played alongside Dewsbury-Hall during a loan spell at Leicester in the first half of last season – had looked set to depart Stamford Bridge over the summer, albeit with the youngster revealing that he opted against sealing another temporary exit, following discussions with his manager.

While the presence of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia has ensured that game time in the league will be hard to come by, cup competitions will no doubt provide the former Inter Milan ace some much-needed minutes, having notably started in the 5-0 thrashing of League Two side Barrow last week.

That involvement did only amount to one key pass, while the rising star also won just a solitary duel on the day, with the Standard’s Dom Smith writing that it was an ‘an evening to forget’ for Casadei, whom he awarded a 5/10 match rating too. In truth, he needed to show more.

Cesare Casadei

The Italy youth international would have been hoping to properly make his mark in order to try and push his way into Maresca’s ‘A’ team, yet he simply appears to be no closer to realising his undoubted potential in a Chelsea shirt.

There remains a long way to go in the season, of course, yet while the likes of Veiga and Dewsbury-Hall appear to be closing the gap on their competitors in the squad, Casadei remains at risk of being left behind.
