Agent travels to England as Arsenal eye January move for £50m Barcelona ace

Arsenal are increasingly keen on the signing of a Barcelona star in the January transfer window, and his agent has travelled to England this week, as the representative fields interest from N5 and across the Premier League.

Arsenal scouring market for new forward after Bukayo Saka injury

Credible media sources have shared that Arsenal are scouring the market for a Bukayo Saka alternative, after the £195,000-per-week star winger was ruled out of action for weeks with a hamstring injury.

There are also fears within Arsenal that Saka could be sidelined until March (The Daily Mail), which would be a hammer blow for manager Mikel Arteta, as he desperately looks to remain in this year’s Premier League title race and end the club’s 21-year wait for a domestic crown.

Raheem Sterling would be useful as cover for Saka, but sadly, Arteta won’t be able to call upon the 30-year-old as he’s also out with a knee injury.

It is looking more and more imperative that Arsenal bring another winger in once the January window commences, which is set to open in a few days time, but the Gunners do possess options in that regard.

Reports have claimed that PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani could be offered to Arsenal on loan, with the France international star struggling to establish himself under Luis Enrique at the Parc des Princes since his move there from Eintracht Frankfurt.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Barca attacker Dani Olmo – who only joined the La Liga giants for around £50 million in the summer – is attracting serious interest from north London, as interim sporting director Jason Ayto looks to Europe in search of more wide options.

The former RB Leipzig sensation could leave Catalonia “free of any contract” next month (Sacha Tavolieri), with Barca struggling to pay his wages for the second half of 2024/2025 as they tackle registration issues.

This has put a host of sides on red alert, including Arsenal, who sense an opportunity to seize the 41-cap Spain international who’s bagged six goals and an assist over his 15 appearances for the Camp Nou side this term.

Agent travels to England as Arsenal eye January move for Dani Olmo

Sky Sports have reported that Arsenal are in “positive contacts” with Olmo’s representatives ahead of a potential move, and The Daily Mail have backed Arteta’s interest in the 26-year-old with a fresh update of their own.

The Mail shares that Olmo’s chief agent, Andy Bara, has travelled to England this week, and he was in attendance to watch Man City’s 1-1 draw with Everton at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day.

While Bara claims that he was there merely for a holiday, as he’s quoted as saying by the report, he is actively exploring transfer options for his client – and Arsenal are named by The Mail as a potential destination for him.

Arsenal have apparently taken a “keen interest” in signing Olmo this January, and are eager to ascertain whether the forward will be available next month, alongside fellow Premier League giants Man United and Man City.

He could save Amorim: The "best LB in the world" wants to sign for Man Utd

Since Ruben Amorim arrived, he has implemented an entirely new system, playing a 3-4-2-1, using three central defenders, and using wing-backs instead of natural full-backs and wingers.

However, with the current composition of Manchester United’s squad, the Portuguese coach has had to get experimental with his selection, starting more defensive full-back options as wingbacks, or even tasking natural wingers to take the extra defensive responsibility such as Amad Diallo.

But with the transfer window now open, many would expect the Red Devils to acquire a better-suited wingback option for their left side, someone who can fulfil the role to its maximum potential.

Man United keen on signing PSG star

According to reports from Pete Hall for the i paper, Manchester United are interested in PSG star, Nuno Mendes, and the Portuguese defender is also keen on being reunited with Amorim at Manchester United. The reports also suggest talks over a new deal at PSG recently broke down, which could make a deal more feasible.

Paris St Germain's Achraf Hakimi celebrates scoring their fourth goal withNunoMendesand Marco Asensio

However, it is likely United will have to make sales in order to bring players through the door, with big names such as Marcus Rashford potential players who could leave in the upcoming transfer window.

The 22-year-old full-back has made 16 appearances for PSG so far this season, scoring two goals, providing two assists and totalling 1,257 minutes played, displaying the attacking output Amorim is after from his wide defenders.

Nuno Mendes vs Diogo Dalot comparison

In the absence of Luke Shaw, Amorim has had few left wing-back solutions, the most common of which has been Diogo Dalot starting on his unnatural side. Another option has been Tyrell Malacia, who returned from a long-term injury which had kept him out for 499 days (missing 70 matches).

With the common injuries to Shaw and Malacia, picking up Mendes from PSG, who has been described as “one of, if not, the best LB in the world” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, would see Amorim finally able to fully rely on his left wingback for the output required in all phases of play.

When you compare Mendes with Dalot, you can see the extra attacking quality he could add to the side, whilst not losing the defensive qualities that the latter brings. The PSG star averages more shots per 90, more progressive actions by far (both carries and passes), and averages more shot-creating actions per 90.

Not only are the underlying attacking metrics better, but his output of 0.05 goals per 90 and 0.20 assists per 90 is also better, and this is whilst playing in a back four, with slightly less attacking responsibility than he would have in Amorim’s United system.

Luke Shaw

Adding a direct wing-back who can provide width, and knows the role Amorim wants from him already, would see the overall quality increase within the system, as many can clearly see currently, the new boss is struggling to get a tune out of certain players in new roles.

Reforço do Corinthians, Rafael Ramos diz que gosta de desafios e fala sobre concorrência na lateral

Apresentado no Corinthians nesta sexta-feira (15), o lateral-direito português Rafael Ramos vestirá a camisa número 21 do clube alvinegro.

Leicestershire (Ackermann 116, Hill 104, Patterson-White 3-37) vs NottinghamshireCenturies by Lewis Hill and Colin Ackermann enabled winless Leicestershire to enjoy their most productive opening day of the season so far as they returned to LV= County Championship action at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Despite being asked to bat first on a well-grassed pitch, the Foxes closed on 340 for 8 against Division Two promotion favourites Nottinghamshire, who came into the match-up with their East Midlands neighbours looking for a fifth win of the campaign.Hill – only the second Leicestershire batter to reach three figures this summer – made 104, sharing a stand of 141 for the third wicket with Ackermann, who became the third as his 116 guided his side to their highest total of the campaign. It is only the second time the Foxes have picked up three batting bonus points.Nottinghamshire claimed four wickets in the final session, but it was not the day they would have anticipated when skipper Steven Mullaney won the toss and opted to give his bowlers first use of a surface that had good pace and carry and gave the ball a chance for much of the day.Related

James Pattinson, back on the ground where he took a match-winning 5 for 29 on his Nottinghamshire debut in 2017, was celebrating after only his fourth delivery as Hassan Azad edged to third slip.Pattinson, who went close several more times, should have had a second, Rishi Patel surviving on 15 when wicketkeeper Tom Moores palmed away what was probably a chance for first slip. Patel was caught at first slip as Dane Paterson struck in his second over at first change but Hill and Ackermann wasted few opportunities as Nottinghamshire bowlers stuck to their attacking tactics, putting on 66 in almost 15 overs at the break to be 129 for 2.The afternoon followed a similar pattern, at least until the captain, Mullaney, decided deep into the session that his frontline bowlers were beginning to toil and allowed himself a bowl. That brought a breakthrough as Hill’s fine innings ended after 15 fours, most of them cut or driven through the off side.Lewis Hill latches on to cut•Getty Images

Mullaney, who had bowled only a couple of overs of his wobbly medium pace before lunch, took over from James at the Pavilion End, his fifth ball did just enough to pass the outside edge and clip Hill’s off stump. Tea arrived at 233 for 4 after Wiaan Mulder had thin-edged Pattinson to be caught behind.Louis Kimber, thankfully unscathed after taking a blow on the helmet facing Pattinson just before the break, played nicely for 33 as he and Ackermann added 69 for the fifth wicket, Ackermann gathering nine boundaries before turning a leg-side delivery from Lyndon James into a couple of runs to complete his hundred, a first for the former skipper in more than a year.Liam Patterson-White, the left-arm spinner, found some turn to bowl Kimber and Harry Swindells was quickly seen off by a swinging delivery from Brett Hutton after Nottinghamshire took the second new ball.Ackermann departed in the third last over of the day, a tentative prod ending in the hands of slip as Patterson-White tried his luck at the Bennett End for the first time, the spinner adding another by the same route as Callum Parkinson fell to the last ball of the day.

South Africa look to take lessons from Mysore into Taunton Test

Four players who featured in that 2014 game – SA’s last Test match – are part of the squad that’s currently touring England

Firdose Moonda24-Jun-2022

Hilton Moreeng will rely on the experience of Marizanne Kapp, who is one of four players who featured in South Africa’s last Test match in 2014•Cricket South Africa

It’s natural for sports teams to take lessons learnt from one game into another but to take those lessons from a fixture played over eight years ago has to be unprecedented. That’s what South Africa will have to do when they play their first Test since 2014 next week. They’re looking back to when they played against India in Mysore, where they lost by an innings and 34 runs after a lower-order collapse of 6 for 25 in their first innings and middle- and lower-order meltdowns of 4 for 8 and 4 for 12 in the second.”In that Test match, we were well in the game competing and then we lost concentration as a unit after tea and that’s when we lost the Test match,” Hilton Moreeng, who has been South Africa’s coach since 2012, said. “It showed what a lack of concentration can do and what losing a session does – how critical that can be. Those who were part of it understand what happened and it’s now an opportunity to show they can put it right against a team that has been playing consistently in this format.”Four of the current squad – Lizelle Lee, Chloe Tryon, Marizanne Kapp and Trisha Chetty – played in that Test. Of those four, Chetty spent almost three hours at the crease while scoring a first-innings 56, and then spent two hours and 25 minutes in the middle while scoring 35 in the second. Tryon batted for two hours and 27 minutes for an unbeaten 30 in the second innings. Their experience will be crucial to a line-up that is still finding its feet in the longer format.Moreeng said the batters were having a more difficult time adjusting than the bowlers but have progressed well from their training camp last month. “The ones that are battling with it currently are our batters, because we’ve just come from a white-ball tour in Ireland,” he said. “What has helped is the prep we had prior to the Ireland tour. We had a three-day and four-day game where we introduced most of them to red-ball cricket.”File photo – Laura Wolvaardt scored a century during South Africa’s three-day warm-up match against England A•Cricket Ireland/Keniry Photography

And the fruits of that labour showed in the three-day warm-up match against England A. Laura Wolvaardt scored her first red-ball ton, Lara Goodall, batting at No. 3, made 51, and Andrie Steyn, Wolvaardt’s opening partner, hit a second-innings 63.”To see how the batters have set up their innings, taking their time and their application – that’s something that wasn’t there in the preparation matches that we had and we are very happy to see that on the back of white-ball cricket,” Moreeng said. “The application we see from batters shows that the improvement is there. Getting into the Test, we can say that most of our batters have spent time in the middle to be able to understand what’s required.”Moreeng would not give away much about the line-up he intends to play in the Test but on the evidence of the warm-up match, Lee is likely to bat in the middle order, flanked by captain Sune Luus and Kapp, who will headline the pace attack. South Africa are likely to go in seam-heavy, with Shabnim Ismail and Ayabonga Khaka as first-choice (though both were rested from the warm-up match) and Anneke Bosch (3/17) and Tumi Sekhukhune (2/27) enjoying good outings in Arundel. “It’s an experienced [bowling] unit,” Moreeng said. “With the Duke ball, they have to make sure they can manage whatever excessive swing they get on this wicket. And the patience around setting up batters and working towards a plan. There’s enough time to make plans and execute your skills.”While the batters and bowlers have been getting skill-specific in their preparation, the squad as a whole has been preparing for successive days of cricket, which they are also unused to. “Our conditioning has been good. We knew the Test was coming so it was put in their conditioning plans. There’s nothing that beats time in the legs. The two games we had back home gave them an idea of what could happen and after four days we could see who was where,” Moreeng said. “Test cricket is more taxing on the body and the mind and everyone understands that. They’re more excited to see how it goes.”And hopeful that, despite the ICC chair Greg Barclay’s feeling that women’s Tests won’t form a big part of cricket’s future, this is the start of a longer-term plan to play red-ball cricket. “Ideally it’s a format we want to see in women’s cricket because of everything it brings to the game,” Moreeng said. “If your skills are good as far as playing Test cricket is concerned, you can transfer the basics to the other two formats.”

Farke must sign "clinical" star after Leeds flop’s "wasteful" 5/10 display

Leeds United progressed through to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday after a 1-0 win over League Two outfit Harrogate Town at Elland Road.

The Whites secured the victory thanks to a second half goal from Largie Ramazani, who headed home from Manor Solomon’s cross, as they struggled to break down the lower league outfit for much of the match.

It was far from a perfect performance from Daniel Farke’s side and the German head coach may not have been pleased with some of the individual showings on display from some of the fringe players who needed to step up.

One Leeds man who did not make the most of his big opportunity to shine was centre-forward Mateo Joseph, in the absence of Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford.

Mateo Joseph's Leeds struggles

The Spain U21 international had a chance to show Farke that he deserves more minutes and starts in the Championship in the second half of the season, but he failed to take it.

Journalist Adam Pope praised the forward’s endeavour during the match but described his performance as “wasteful”, which has been a recurring theme for him this season.

LeedsLive awarded him a rating of 5/10 for his display and noted that the striker ‘struggled’ with the physicality of the three Harrogate defenders.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate has been incredibly wasteful in the second tier this season, underperforming his xG tally by more than two goals.

It has been a consistent issue for the attacker and it is one that has prevented him from being a regular starter ahead of Piroe, and this latest ‘wasteful’ showing means that Farke must surely dip into the market to sign Mergim Berisha.

Why Leeds should sign Mergim Berisha

It was recently reported that Leeds are interested in a deal to sign the Hoffenheim forward, who could be available on an 18-month loan with the option to make it a permanent move next year.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Berisha, who has been described as being a “clinical finisher” by analysts Football Chatters, has only started five matches in the Bundesliga since the start of last season due to suffering an ACL injury in 2023.

The £56k-per-week forward’s form before that long-term lay-off suggests that the quality is there for him to come in and offer more to the club’s promotion push than Joseph in the second half of the season, if Farke can help him to get back to his best.

In the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign, the Germany international scored nine goals from 8.13 xG across 23 appearances for Augsburg, which speaks to his ability as a finisher in a major European league.

If Leeds can strike a loan deal for the 26-year-old marksman then he could be an excellent addition to the side, provided the attacker can get back to his 2022/23 form by playing regular football again.

Joseph’s performance against Harrogate, and his displays in the Championship more generally, suggest that a new striker could be needed and Berisha seems to fit the bill.
