Diaz 2.0: Liverpool battling PL rivals for "explosive" £84m star

In the past decade or so, Liverpool have had some exceptional wingers play for the club. Of course, the best of the bunch has undoubtedly been Mohamed Salah. Jamie Carragher claimed that the Egyptian is “in the top five players to have ever played for Liverpool”, and he is now not far off 350 goals and assists for the club.

One of Salah’s teammates, Sadio Mane, was another standout winger who donned the famous Red shirt. The Senegal attacker scored 120 times and grabbed 42 assists in 269 Liverpool appearances.

Nowadays, the likes of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, alongside Salah, are some of the electric wingers at Arne Slot’s disposal. If rumours are to be believed, they might soon be joined by another exciting wideman who the Reds are linked with.

Liverpool target new winger

The player in question here is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. It has been an exceptional season so far for the England under-21 international, and he has been linked with a move to some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Transfer Focus

According to a report from reputable journalist Christian Falk, the Reds are “in the transfer race” to sign Gittens, in a deal that would seemingly be completed in the summer rather than a move during the January transfer window.

Slot’s side will face tough competition. Bayern Munich are keen on the player, as are some of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, namely Manchester United and Chelsea.

Any club wishing to sign the former Manchester City academy star would need to pay Dortmund’s £84m asking price.

Why Gittens would be a good signing

It has been a simply fantastic season so far for the 20-year-old. In 28 games so far across all competitions, he has 11 goals and five assists, including four goals in seven games in the Champions League.

That included a superb goal away to Real Madrid in Dortmund’s 5-2 defeat, which actually gave his side a 2-0 lead before their capitulation.

That day, the former Man City academy man became the youngest ever Englishman to score against Los Blancos, a record to be proud of.

Described as an “explosive” player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the London-born attacker is predominantly a left-winger. However, he has also featured on the right wing for Dortmund, and even made an appearance as a number ten, showing great versatility which Slot could rely on.

If he did make the move to Anfield next summer, he would likely be going up against Luis Diaz for a spot in the team. Like Gittens, the Colombian winger has impressed this term, with 12 goals and three assists in 30 games.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz celebrates

Diaz has been on fire in front of goal at times in the 2024/25 campaign. On four different occasions, he has managed to score two or more goals in a single game, including a Champions League hat-trick in a 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen.

Interestingly, even though they might be competing for one spot in the Reds’ team, there are statistical comparisons, as per FBref, that can be drawn between Gittens and Diaz from this season’s Champions League.

There is a lot of value when they shoot, with Gittens averaging 0.31 goals per shot and Diaz slightly less, with 0.3 goals per shot each game.

The Dortmund star is a chance creator, averaging 1.11 key passes and 0.56 goal-creating actions per 90 minutes. In comparison, the Liverpool number seven averages 0.96 key passes and 0.39 goal-creating actions each game.

It would cost Liverpool a lot of money to sign Gittens, but perhaps it is a necessary deal. The Reds would be bringing in a young winger with high potential who could be considered the second coming of Diaz, as the stats suggest.

In terms of planning for their project, this could be the dream move for Liverpool as they look to build on a fantastic start made under Slot.

Lauren Winfield-Hill century propels Northern Diamonds into final

Run-a-ball 125* leaves defending champions Vipers facing semi-final Eliminator to reach Lord’s

Lauren Winfield-Hill’s brilliant unbeaten run-a-ball 125 guided the Northern Diamonds into next Sunday’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final at Lord’s at the expense of champions Southern Vipers, who could not defend 227 at Headingley and lost by four wickets.Winfield-Hill steered a chase which had stumbled to 79 for 4 in this winner-takes-all final group game, gaining help from fellow wicketkeeper-batter Bess Heath, who contributed 54 to a fifth-wicket partnership of 129.The Vipers, the back-to-back champions who posted 226 for 9, must now go into Wednesday’s semi-final Eliminator clash with South East Stars – likely to be at Beckenham – in order to keep alive their hopes of the ‘threepeat’.If they win, all three RHF Trophy finals will have been contested between the Diamonds and the Vipers, the latter winning the previous two. Having reached four regional finals in all, the Diamonds will now hope to secure their maiden trophy. The Vipers, for whom Georgia Elwiss top-scored with 61 off 95, came into this fixture top of the table and only ahead of the Diamonds on net run-rate after five wins apiece and lost with seven overs to spare. They fell to 24 for 2 inside four overs after electing to bat.Lizzie Scott flattened Ella McCaughan’s leg-stump with a big in-swinger in the opening over before Linsey Smith trapped England’s Maia Bouchier lbw for 9.But Elwiss and Georgia Adams, her captain, calmly steadied with a 72-run stand in 17 overs before Adams had a momentary lapse in concentration on 33 to open the door again at 96 for 3 in the 21st. She handed leg-spinner Katie Levick the first of two wickets when she was stumped by Winfield-Hill.Elwiss reached her fifty off 77 balls shortly afterwards, though lost Paige Scholfield bowled by Levick. And she was gone herself four overs later when bowled playing back to one which skidded through from off-spinner Emma Marlow. At 143 for 5 after 33 overs, the Diamonds had reasserted the authority they had gained in the opening stages. Captain Hollie Armitage then struck with her third ball as Chloe Hill chipped her leg-spin to mid-off, the first of three wickets to fall for 23 as Tara Norris was run out and Alice Monaghan caught behind off Armitage, who returned 3 for 37 from seven overs. The latter two fell in as many deliveries, leaving Vipers 182 for 8 in the 42nd.But, just as happened at the start, the Diamonds failed to maintain pressure, as conceding 32 runs in wides suggests.Emily Windsor accumulated an unbeaten 49, scoring the lion’s share of 44 added for the last two wickets with Charlotte Taylor and debutant leg-spinner Finty Trussler. Armitage had the former caught at mid-on in the final over. But the Diamonds’ task of removing the venom would be far from straightforward against a Vipers team to be reckoned with. And so it proved, as they stumbled to 79 for 4 inside 16 overs.Smith miscued left-arm seamer Norris to mid-off early on before second-wicket pair Winfield-Hill and Armitage shared 44. Then came the loss of three wickets for 17, sparked by a cutting Armitage edging the off-spin of Adams behind. That was followed by two wickets in 19-year-old Trussler’s second over, the 16th. Sterre Kalis pulled a full toss out to deep midwicket before Leah Dobson was lbw.But Winfield-Hill, who won the Hundred at Lord’s with Oval Invincibles earlier in the month, was not to be deterred. She reached her eighth fifty of the summer in all cricket off 56 balls and was particularly strong on the drive. With Heath’s help, they positively turned the game back in their favour in a defining 25-over alliance and, by the time Winfield-Hill reached her fourth career professional century – her first this summer – off 105 balls, the game had been iced at 195 for 4 in the 36th over. After reaching her fifty off 61 balls, Heath fell to Adams with 19 required. But it was inconsequential, as was the run out of Leigh Kasperek. Winfield-Hill finished it with her only six over long-on off Norris.

– O Palmeiras é o time da virada.

Rangers must regret selling man "mountain" who just dominated £106m attack

Glasgow Rangers chiefs Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement only dipped into the market to make one imminent addition to the side in the January transfer window.

The Light Blues bosses decided that they needed to bolster their options at the heart of the defence and opted to complete a deal to bring Rafael Fernandes in on loan from Lille until the end of the season.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old gem made his full debut on a hugely disappointing day for the club, as they lost 1-0 to Championship side Queen’s Park at Ibrox.

It was not down to his performance, however, as the Portuguese talent was not at fault for the goal or one of the players tasked with breaking down the opposition’s defence.

Rangers' centre-back pursuit in January

Fernandes, though, was not the only central defender who was linked with a move to Ibrox during the recent January transfer window, as the Gers seemingly considered a number of options.

Multiple UK-based options were linked with Rangers. Norwich City centre-back Grant Hanley was touted with a return to the club he spent time in the academy at, only to end up signing for Birmingham City instead.

It was also claimed that the Gers board were keen to seal a swoop for Manchester United’s veteran centre-back Jonny Evans, but he remained at Old Trafford.

Further afield, Rangers reportedly made a bid to bring Niko Katic back to Ibrox from FC Zurich, only for him to end up signing for Plymouth Argyle in the English Championship.

Where Are They Now

Katic, who made 59 appearances for the Light Blues, was sold to Zurich by former Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the summer of 2022 and that is a decision that the club must now regret.

Why Rangers should regret selling Niko Katic

The Scottish giants must regret selling the Bosnia international for several reasons. Firstly, they were reportedly interested in bringing him back to the club last month, which suggests that it was a mistake to get rid of him in the first place.

Nikola Katic

They need cover in the centre-back position and, perhaps, keeping Katic at Ibrox would have meant that they had the required depth in that area of the pitch.

Also, the 28-year-old star’s performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup for Plymouth last weekend shows that he is also a top-quality centre-back who could have been starring for Rangers right now.

Arne Slot selected a Reds front three that included reported £49m signing Luis Diaz, £45m signing Diogo Jota, and £12.5m signing Federico Chiesa – £106.5m worth of talent.

As you can see in the table above, though, Katic dominated those Liverpool attackers throughout the match to keep a clean sheet and progress through to the next round of the FA Cup.

These statistics show that the Plymouth star has the quality to step up and be a defensive “mountain”, as he was once described by Steven Gerrard, when his team needs him.

The Glasgow Rangers should finally move on from the midfielder at the end of the season.

Therefore, Rangers should regret selling Katic back in 2022 as they have gone on to miss him, given their interest in the defender last month, and he is now thriving in England with his new club.

Liverpool now lining up "incredible" Salah successor as big story brews

As concerns over Mohamed Salah’s future continue to increase, Liverpool are reportedly lining up a move to sign a summer replacement in the form of a Bundesliga winger.

Liverpool transfer news

At the end of last season, there were some doubts over Salah’s ability to maintain his incredibly high standards. Just nine months and a fresh look later, however, the Egyptian is looking more complete than ever and is undoubtedly an early favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.

Liverpool, meanwhile, sit top of the Premier League and finished top of the Champions League group phase all whilst booking their place at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final. There remains no question over Salah’s ability. Instead, the power is in his hands, with just a matter of months remaining on his current deal and a new contract yet to be agreed.

To lose arguably the world’s best player this summer would be a true nightmare for the Reds. To lose that same player for free, however, would represent the ultimate failure for all involved at Anfield.

As things stand, the Premier League leaders must prepare for the worst and that has seen ‘one of the summer’s big stories’ come their way. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now lining up a move to sign Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund this summer in an attempt to replace Salah should they need to do so.

Liverpool now seriously interested in forward Everton let leave for £0

The Reds could get one over on their rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 12, 2025

Adeyemi, himself, is reportedly keen to complete a move to the Premier League and has changed his agent in an attempt to make such a move. Whether the Reds come calling in the summer in an attempt to replace Salah remains to be seen though.

"Incredible" Adeyemi doesn't have the output to replace Salah

The reality for Liverpool right now is that a replacement for Salah simply may not exist – or one that is feasible this summer at least. The Egyptian is one of the best goalscorers in the world and one of the best creators. To replace both of those traits, the Reds will arguably need to sign two separate stars, such is the rarity of those two abilities combined at the highest level.

They’re two traits that, in truth, Adeyemi lacks. Whilst the 23-year-old has previously been dubbed “incredible” by former Red Bull Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle, the winger’s output is no match for Salah’s.

In the equivalent of almost seven games, Adeyemi has maintained a respectable goal involvement rate, with five to his name. Compared to Salah, that number is still a world away from the Liverpool star’s incredible numbers.

Not many, if any, have been able to match Salah so far this season and not many, if any, will be able to replace Liverpool’s Egyptian King this summer if he fails to sign a new contract.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam conceded his team was “not up to the mark”, but backed the selection gamble to field a bowling heavy line-up after their T20 World Cup semi-final prospects nosedived with a one-run defeat to Zimbabwe at Optus Stadium in Perth.Just four days after a harrowing last-ball defeat to India at a packed MCG, Pakistan suffered more heartbreak after they were stunned by Zimbabwe having dominated the match for large periods on a fast and bouncy pitch expected to suit them.”Today, we are not up to the mark in all three departments,” Babar told reporters at his post-match press conference. “It’s very hard as a team and as a captain.”Enticed by a green-tinged Optus Stadium pitch, where ball had mostly dominated bat in the previous two matches, Pakistan decided to strengthen their pace attack with the inclusion of quick Mohammad Wasim at the expense of batter Asif Ali.Shan Masood is distraught after being stumped during Pakistan’s collapse•ICC/Getty Images

After restricting Zimbabwe to a modest 129 for 8, it appeared a masterstroke with a fiery Wasim starring with 4 for 24, including the key wicket of Sikandar Raza followed by expert death bowling, but Pakistan’s weakened middle-order fell apart under pressure.”I don’t think so,” Babar said, when asked if the strategy to go in with an extra bowler had ultimately backfired. “This pitch required fast bowlers, so we had that in the planning and that’s why we had an extra fast bowler.”Related
