Celtic’s talks with Tottenham over a permanent move for Cameron Carter-Vickers are thought to be progressing well, according to The Daily Record.
The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers starring at Parkhead
The Hoops secured the services of the American defender in the final hours of the summer transfer window, adding an option-to-buy clause to the season-long loan arrangement.
Since then, the 24-year-old has missed just one Premiership fixture, making 23 appearances in green and white. He has been the best performing centre-back at Parkhead, as per WhoScored, with Ange Postecoglou keen to make his move permanent before the summer.
The Latest: Talks progressing well
The Daily Record’s Robbie Copeland shared a story on Saturday lunchtime, with updates on both Carter-Vickers and rumoured target Zinedine Ferhat.
When it came to the Tottenham loanee, the journalist said that ‘noises coming out of the club suggest talks are progressing well’ regarding Celtic’s chances of striking a permanent deal.
The Verdict: Biggest signing of Postecoglou era?
Should a permanent move for Carter-Vickers prove to be Celtic’s next piece of January business, then it would be the most expensive addition under Postecoglou so far and therefore a major sign of intent from the club.
There is thought to be no wriggle room with Spurs when it comes to the £6m clause for the centre-back, meaning that it would surpass the £4.86m they spent on Kyogo Furuhashi last summer.
It’s good to see that the Hoops are willing to back Postecoglou, and who knows, a record fee under the 56-year-old could yet be broken for a second time this month with a possible £6.5m deal for another loanee in Jota.

A brilliant innings of 125 from 120 balls from Tamim Iqbal was unable to rescue Bangladesh from some familiar failings in the first ODI at Dhaka, as their coach, Jamie Siddons, was once again left frustrated by the lack of expertise on display. Nevertheless, as England’s spinner Graeme Swann noted, the momentum can shift very quickly in three-match series, as the teams prepare to do it all again in the second match on Tuesday.”It’s nice to have just a three-match series, rather than a seven-match slog around the country,” said Swann. “I think it’s better for the game if it’s a shorter series. It is nice, having won the first match, to know that this next game could potentially wrap up the series, but on the other hand, if you’re the team that’s 1-0 down, you only need to win tomorrow to be right back in it. It’s good for the game.”The opening ODI was a face-saver for both teams. England were able to avoid the ignominy of their first defeat in any contest against Bangladesh, while their opponents were able to demonstrate that, whatever the shortcomings that still exist in their set-up, the gulf that once existed between the two sides is narrower than at any time in their previous eight ODI encounters. But though Siddons was full of praise for Tamim, whom he declared to be “world class”, he was nevertheless left to rue a performance that could, with a touch more application, have given England a far greater challenge than the 229 target that they eventually chased down with six wickets in hand.”It’s great to see one of the boys stepping up, and they do it regularly now,” Siddons told Cricinfo. “Hundreds used to be very rare, but in the last few months we’ve put together six or seven, so that’s amazing stuff for individuals. But it probably needed one guy to make 50 or 60 with Tamim, and then who knows? I’ve seen it happen to better sides as well, but it’s disappointing. It was a very flat wicket and we got first use of it, but no-one [but Tamim] went on.”Swann, with three cheap wickets, played a key part in the derailment, but he refused to be drawn into criticism of their approach. “I’ve been impressed with the standard of cricket over here,” he said. “They’ve certainly got talent in the team, and it’s certainly not for an Englishman to say they threw their wickets away and got bowled out cheaply, because that’s what we do most of the time.”It would be very harsh for an Englishman to turn around and criticise anyone else’s one-day cricket,” he added. “They are an ever-improving side. I think four or five years ago, every team who played them expected to walk all over them, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore. They’ve got some real talent in the team.”Swann reserved particular praise for Tamim, who lived up to the reputation that had preceded him in the build-up to the series. “He certainly seems a good prospect. He came out all guns blazing and fair play to him, he smashed it everywhere. We kept getting wickets at the other end, so it put a lot of pressure on him, but the way he responded and tempered down his innings was very impressive. It was a good knock.”The manner in which Tamim reined his innings in, from a 32-ball fifty to a 94-ball hundred, was especially pleasing for Siddons, who claimed it was a sign that his message was finally getting through to a talented but temperamental squad.”Team rules warranted him pulling his horns in a bit and batting through the innings, and he was six overs away from doing that,” Siddons said. “So he stuck to the rules. He knows how to dominate, but when we lose a few wickets, he knows how to back off and work the innings around.”Right from the time I got here, my philosophy was that we were going to get some world-class cricketers here, because I don’t believe we’ve got any,” he said. “And now I think we’ve got two or three. Tamim is proving to me that with the hundreds he’s getting against the better sides, and the way that he is making them, that he is world-class. He’s capable of taking on any player in the world and having some success.”England dearly hope that their new opening batsman, Craig Kieswetter, will prove capable of producing similar fireworks in the opening overs of subsequent contests. But his debut innings was a chastening experience, as Alastair Cook pinched the strike for the first three overs, before Bangladesh’s captain and senior spinner, Shakib Al Hasan, brought himself on to bowl. Kieswetter might have been dismissed twice in his first over, before eventually charging down the track to be stumped for 19.”If he wants to keep running down the wicket to our spinners, we’ll keep bowling spinners at him. That’ll suit us perfectly,” said Siddons, who hinted that it might be a tactic they employ regularly during the series. “He was obviously uncomfortable against them early, so we’ll see how he goes. The ball didn’t spin a lot, so that was a bit unfortunate, but Chittagong spins.”From England’s point of view, Swann is determined that they build on their success in the first ODI, and set about using their lead to dominate the coming contests. “I think it would be good if we batted first as well, because you want to know you can win games from any position,” he said. “The Australians always say it doesn’t matter whether you bat or bowl first, it’s whoever plays the best cricket who wins. If we go bat first, we’ll be looking to post a total that’s beyond the reach of Bangladesh.”

So far in the current January transfer window, Celtic have managed to bring a number of new players to the club such as Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda among others.
However, it seems as though the Parkhead club could be set to say goodbye to a familiar face connected with the Bhoys after recent reports emerged claiming that Celtic have terminated Leigh Griffiths’ contract.
With the club seemingly cutting ties with the Scot, one player that could or should follow in his footsteps out of Celtic is fellow attacker Albian Ajeti.
Celtic signed Ajeti back in the 2020 summer transfer window from English Premier League side West Ham United in a deal worth a reported fee of £4.5m.
Since then, the 24-year-old has gone on to make 48 appearances for the Hoops across all competitions but has only managed to score nine goals and provide five assists, which is far less than what the club would have hoped for when they signed him.
Labelled as a “problem” in the past by Packie Bonner in terms of his efforts on the pitch, Ajeti has only started six of the 17 games he’s appeared in for Celtic across all competitions this term, scoring just three goals in the process, exposing his inability to find the net on a regular basis.
As well as his lack of goals this campaign, his performances in the SPFL have not been much to shout about either with WhoScored giving him an overall season rating of 6.47/10, making him one of the lowest-rated players in Ange Postecoglou’s squad to start more than one league game this season.
With that in mind, it could be worth Celtic continuing their clear out after reportedly terminating Griffiths’ contract and pushing Ajeti, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £18k-per-week according to Salary Sport, out the door as well before the current transfer window ends.
Taking into account how it has been claimed by journalist Pete O’Rourke that Celtic could look to add some more attacking players to their squad before the end of the month, this could only push Ajeti further down the pecking order or potentially out the door altogether.

Leeds United fans will love Phil Hay’s latest claim…
What’s the word?
The Athletic reporter dropped an exciting 12-word update on the contractual situation of Raphinha to Twitter earlier this week.
“Leeds United are increasingly confident of finalising a new contract with Raphinha,” he said before going on to discuss his performance against West Ham United on Sunday in an accompanying column for the website.
Hay described his display as a “creative masterclass” as Jack Harrison’s hat-trick secured an impressive 3-2 win over the Irons at the London Stadium.
A matter of time?
It is surely only a matter of time before we hear official news from the club on this front as all the noises around Elland Road are positive – the fact that one of the most reliable sources associated with Leeds is saying so is massively encouraging.
Indeed, Sunday’s performance was another damning reminder of how important the Brazilian is to Marcelo Bielsa and the squad.
[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]
As per SofaScore, he registered a whopping eight key passes, including an assist for one of Harrison’s three goals. He also accurately delivered 100% of his crosses, registered two dribbles and attempted three shots but could not add to his eight goals.
Before the weekend, he was the only player to have scored more than twice. He also tops the charts for average rating (7.27) by quite some margin, leading the way for key passes (2.1 per game) and dribbles (2.3 per game), via WhoScored.
‘Leeds have no interest in listening to bids for Raphinha in the present transfer window,’ Hay added in his piece for The Athletic. ‘They have received no offers so far and when it was reported in his native Brazil on Christmas Eve that Bayern Munich would sign him before the end of the month, Leeds poured water on the story quickly.’
Raphinha has been a real star for the Yorkshire giants ever since his £17m move from Stade Rennes in October 2020 – now valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, it has looked every bit like an incredible deal for the club.
Of course, United should be resigned to losing him at some point but him being around for the foreseeable future, thanks to an extension to his current £63k-per-week deal is surely going to leave the Elland Road faithful absolutely buzzing.

Anyone for football?: Mitchell Johnson celebrates his fancy footwork•Getty Images
Tuff opponents Daryl Tuffey’s Test career against Australia has spanned ten years – long enough, you’d think, for a big tally of wickets. In that decade Tuffey has taken a grand total of … zero Australian wickets. In fairness, this is only his third Test against them, the first coming in Hamilton in March 2000 and the second at Bellerive Oval in November 2001. Unfortunately for Tuffey, by the time the declaration came on the second day at the Basin Reserve he had career figures of 0 for 250 against Australia in Tests.Chris Martin to Clarke: I will try to fix you Chris Martin took a leaf from his Coldplay namesake’s lyric sheet when he jagged one back to strike Michael Clarke flush in the groin. It was enough to send Clarke into crouching position, taking a few deep breaths to regain his composure. “Don’t panic,” Clarke may have thought, “yes, it hit me in my place, but the hardest part is over”. A couple of deliveries later the electronic scoreboard brought up a message advising the crowd to “Keep your eye on the ball” to avoid being struck by any stray sixes. A sly dig from the scoreboard operator?Mitch, the footy star Mitchell Johnson can do some wonderful things with ball, bat and, as it turns out, his feet. Johnson effected one of the more memorable run-outs when he sprinted almost level with the stumps at the striker’s end and soccered the ball from side-on. The action found Peter Ingram short during his attempt at a quick single. Perhaps those football warm-ups are useful after all.Beating a memorable pair The 253-run partnership between Clarke and Marcus North was Australia’s highest fifth-wicket stand against New Zealand, surpassing a 24-year-old record that was also set in Wellington. Greg Ritchie and Greg Matthews, two of the characters of the Australian team in the 1980s, had put on 213 back in 1985-86.Nathan H… The ground announcer at the Basin Reserve had a little trouble pronouncing the name of Australia’s spinner when he came on for the first time, advising the crowd they were about to see “Nathan Hore-witz”. Still, you can’t blame him. One of Australia’s selectors, Merv Hughes, kept saying “Horritch” when he was giving special comments during the Ashes coverage on Australian television, while another occasional commentator, the aforementioned Matthews, insists on calling him “Horridge”.
