Andrew Strauss insists there is still plenty of room for improvement from England in the final ODI at Lord’s as they search for a 4-1 series victory. The loss at The Oval on Wednesday ruined their chances of a clean-sweep and although Strauss maintains there is nothing to be gained from the series ahead of the Ashes, he does believe every win is important less than a year from a World Cup.England will consider making changes for Saturday’s game, with the possibility that players might be rested ahead of Bangladesh’s tour. But Strauss doesn’t want to risk Australia finishing the series with a pair of victories, after England’s powerful start gave them a realistic chance of completing a whitewash.”Having pretty much dominated the first three games, we don’t want the series to finish 3-2,” Strauss said. “It would not be the sort of way to finish the series we would have anticipated at 3-0 up. But we’ve got to play better than we did at The Oval, there’s no doubt about that, and look back to what we’ve done well over those first three games and make sure we repeat it.”We’ve had one hundred in the series, so you always want your top order to get hundreds, there’s no doubt about that. That’s an area we’ve identified that we can improve. As a batting unit I think we can probably play better than we have done. The bowling has been pretty good, the fielding his been pretty good, but there’s still room for improvement in both of those disciplines as well.”One man England would love to see lift is Kevin Pietersen, who has shown promise during the series without making use of his starts. Pietersen has now gone 16 ODIs without a half-century, stretching back to the tour of India in November 2008, and Strauss said that while such a lean patch was unexpected, he had no concerns over Pietersen’s form.”You expect him to score runs consistently and he has done so much in the past,” Strauss said. “What I would say is he has contributed in a lot of those one-day internationals without getting fifties. He’s still the player that opposition teams fear the most in our side. If you see him playing in the nets, you know there’s absolutely no reason to believe he’s not going to go out and get a hundred tomorrow. We’ve got no concerns with him.”While victory for England would cap off an outstanding series, Australia will consider it a minor triumph if they come from 3-0 down to end up with a 3-2 scoreline. There have been some real positives for the visitors over the past two games, including the form of the pace trio of Shaun Tait, Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris. The Australians are also keen to take some momentum into their Twenty20s against Pakistan, which begin two days after the Lord’s ODI. The coach Tim Nielsen said the group was in better spirits after the 78-run win at The Oval.”We feel a bit better about ourselves,” Nielsen said. “We were probably building to that game throughout the first three. It would be nice to finish 3-2. If we do that, we know we’ve played well tomorrow and it’s probably a pretty fair reflection of the series.”

Leeds target O’Brien wanted by Palace

Leeds United transfer target Lewis O’Brien has emerged as a potential suitor for Crystal Palace, according to a new transfer report which has emerged.

The Lowdown: O’Brien a long-time Leeds target

The Huddersfield Town midfielder has been continually linked with a move to Elland Road in the last two transfer windows, but he has remained at the John Smith’s Stadium for now.

O’Brien has again been an impressive performer for the Terriers this season, starting 31 Championship matches and chipping in with two goals and two assists.

A summer move looks likely for the 23-year-old, and it looks as though he won’t be short of Premier League suitors.

The Latest: Palace enter the race for O’Brien

According to Football League World, Crystal Palace are now interested in signing O’Brien at the end of the season.

The Englishman is seemingly a player who Patrick Vieira admires and the Eagles are ‘more convinced than ever’ that they will get their man in the summer.

The Verdict: Still a strong option

There is no doubt that midfield reinforcements are required at Leeds this summer, with their sparsity of options evident in the absence of the injured Kalvin Phillips.

O’Brien may not be a world-renowned name but he could be an excellent addition – he has been called a ‘special’ talent by Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan and has averaged 2.5 tackles per game in the league this season. Stuart Dallas (2.8) is the only player to better that tally for the Whites in 2020/21.

At 23, he would also be a long-term acquisition who could mature into a similarly dominant player to Phillips, with the current Leeds hero still plying his trade in the Championship at the same age. This fresh report of Palace’s strong interest ought to jolt the Elland Road hierarchy into action for fear of missing out on a long-time target whose ability is evident.

– Quantas partidas boas o Betão fez aqui?

Gloucestershire collapse after Porterfield ton

Gloucestershire’s William Porterfield scored his second century of the season on a first day of swinging fortunes

16-Aug-2010
ScorecardGloucestershire’s William Porterfield scored his second century of the season on a first day of swinging fortunes in their County Championship clash with Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.Ireland international Porterfield struck a superb 150 off 245 balls and was ably supported by 19-year-old Chris Dent, who made 92 off 180 balls as part of a 219-run partnership for the second wicket. But the visitors collapsed alarmingly after Dent’s dismissal, losing nine wickets for 60 runs to total 302, with Lee Daggett leading the Northamptonshire fightback as he took 4 for 57 before the home side closed on 4 for 2 in reply.Northamptonshire won the toss but chose to make their opponents bat first and in the sixth over Jack Brooks took the wicket of Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty by trapping him lbw. His fellow opener, Porterfield, then raced to 50 off as many balls by the end of the 16th over and Dent reached his half-century off 103 balls in the seventh over after lunch.Porterfield went on to reach his century off 154 balls as the hosts’ attack continued to toil in the sun. The stand was finally broken with the last ball before tea when Dent missed his attempted sweep and was bowled by James Middlebrook.Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman made just a single before his off stump was taken out by Zimbabwe international Elton Chigumbura in the third over of the evening. Porterfield’s excellent innings was finally ended when he edged Brooks to David Sales at second slip in the first over after the new ball was taken. In the very next over, Daggett sent James Franklin’s off stump tumbling and Steve Snell soon followed for a six-ball duck when he edged Daggett to Sales at second slip. Ed Young then threw his wicket away in his first Championship innings when he pulled Brooks straight to Ben Howgego at square leg.Jon Lewis edged Daggett to wicketkeeper David Murphy before Gemaal Hussain went in the same fashion off Northants captain Andrew Hall and Steve Kirby was the last wicket to fall, caught and bowled by Daggett. The hosts faced 14 balls but lost opener Stephen Peters when he was caught at second slip by Dent off Hussain before Middlebrook was snared at third slip by Porterfield off Lewis, both only making singles.

Liverpool must start Thiago vs Leeds United

After seeing off Norwich City at the weekend, Liverpool face Leeds United in the Premier League on Wednesday night hoping to close the gap at the top of the table.

The Reds saw Manchester City slip to a defeat on Sunday, and know that all three points against Leeds tonight at Anfield would be another big step to really pushing this Premier League title race down to the wire.

One man who Jurgen Klopp should surely be starting against the Whites, is Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard has had his fair share of injury problems this season for Liverpool as he struggles to get consistent game-time under his belt – his longest run of action saw him make seven appearances in the Premier League consecutively between November and December.

However, that run illustrated signs of Thiago being back to his absolute best, with the midfielder starting in six successive games and seeing the Reds rattle off win after win – Klopp’s side scored 17 goals and conceded just twice in that time.

As per WhoScored, his average match rating of 7.08 ranks him as Liverpool’s second-best performing midfielder this season in the Premier League behind only Fabinho.

And, against Norwich when he came off the bench, the former Bayern Munich man changed the course of the game in Liverpool’s favour, completing two out of his three attempted dribbles and providing two key passes.

Speaking after his impressive cameo against the Canaries, Klopp said: “Thiago with his passing, really fresh, really relaxed, full of confidence, that helped as well. He is a good player, we just have to make sure we can keep him fit.”

And, speaking late last year, he declared: “Coming to a new club like Liverpool, in the most difficult period in all our lives, he settled really well. His family is here, he loves it here, he was in the middle of the team very quickly. He’s a really good character, really good personality and obviously a world-class player.”

With that ability to turn in tight spaces and beat the press, Thiago could be crucial to overcoming the high-intensity style Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds play with, and could give the Reds real control of the midfield.

Liverpool only had to see their rivals Manchester United cause danger numerous times in their 4-2 win at Elland Road just by sheer counter-attacking and quick passing, and Thiago certainly has the quality to pick the right pass and change the tempo of a game.

The £16m-rated star could be the man to wreak havoc against Leeds.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have suffered a major setback before Leeds…

Liverpool: Klopp poised to make Bremer bid

Liverpool are interested in a deal to bring Gleison Bremer to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Tutto Juve (via Sport Witness), who claim that Liverpool are ready to launch an offer of around €30m (£25m) in a bid to fend off competition from Inter Milan in the race to land the Torino centre-back.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

This would appear to support a recent report by Goal, who suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side have already made initial enquires regarding a deal for the 25-year-old defender – whom the Serie A side are resigned to losing this summer.

Imagine him & Van Dijk

With Joe Gomez being heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, in addition to how impressive Bremer has been in Italy this season, it is easy to see why Klopp would be interested in a move for the defender this summer.

Indeed, over his 29 Serie A appearances in the current campaign, the £27m-rated Brazilian has been imperious in the heart of the Torino defence, helping his side keep eight clean sheets, as well as making an average of 3.4 interceptions – the most of any player in the league – 1.4 tackles, 3.9 clearances and winning 6.7 duels per game.

The £53k-per-week centre-back has also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals and registering one assist, in addition to taking an average of 0.9 shots and making 0.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor dubbed both “unbelievable” and “faultless” average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as the third-best defender in the Italian top flight.

Furthermore, FBref also ranks the 25-year-old in the top 2% of defenders in Europe’s big five leagues for pressures per 90, as well as the top 1% for interceptions, the top 4% for blocks, the top 11% for clearances, the top 4% for aerials won, the top 1% for npxG and the top 18% for dribbles completed – all of which would appear to make him something of a perfect signing for Klopp’s high-intensity brand of football.

As such, it is clear for all to see that, should Bremer be able to continue this level of performance after a potential switch to Liverpool, Klopp would have undoubtedly formed an extremely formidable centre-back partnership in Bremer and Virgil van Dijk – something that leads us to believe the German must do all he can to land the Torino titan this summer.
