Brett Lee showed more improvement after injury but it was Stuart Clark and Scott Coyte who claimed the recognition as New South Wales swept past Queensland at the Gabba. The Blues overhauled the hosts’ 158 in the 33rd over for the loss of four wickets, taking advantage of the powerful performance from their bowlers.Clark was the Man of the Match for grabbing an early victim in both innings and Coyte finished the Bulls off with three breakthroughs in four balls. Coyte, a former indoor cricketer, cut his run-up to help speed up the over-rate and struck in devastating fashion. After dismissing Chris Hartley, he knocked over Nathan Rimmington and Chris Swan, and would have had a hat-trick if Peter Nevill had picked up Cameron Boyce’s legside nick. The return of 3 for 31 was a relief for Coyte, who started with an 11-ball over.Clark collected 2 for 31 off nine overs in the seaming conditions while Lee returned 2 for 43, including the played-on of Lee Carseldine. Lee operated mostly in the 130kphs and moved the ball through the air as he continues to gain confidence after six months of rehabilitation on his elbow. On a difficult night for batting, Queensland were 4 for 89 after 20 overs and needed James Hopes’ late 39 off 34. Phil Jaques (30) helped the Blues to a two-run lead after their first innings while Moises Henriques (36) and Nic Maddinson – the 18-year-old was unbeaten on 39 – steered them home.

Rangers have Morelos heir in Juan Alegria

As the news came from Ibrox earlier this month that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was ruled out for the rest of the season, many supporters would have sighed in disbelief.

This was news which could derail the club’s season, and although the Gers responded well by securing a Scottish Cup final berth and getting through to the Europa League semi-finals, there will come a time when the Colombian won’t be at Rangers.

It isn’t all bad, though, with the club having a potential ready-made replacement for when the inevitable happens and the 25-year-old is whisked off to the Premier League.

Juan Alegria is basically a younger version of Morelos. The 19-year-old is also from Colombia and moved to Finland before ending up at Ibrox.

He is highly regarded at the club, and former Rangers defender Alan Hutton described him as a “big talent” in 2020 shortly before the youngster signed for the Light Blues.

Alegria has yet to make his senior Gers debut but has played 34 senior matches for FC Honka and on loan at Partick Thistle, scoring three times, but it is his resemblance to Morelos which is getting supporters excited for the future.

The 25-year-old has gone back to his old ways under Giovanni van Bronckhorst following a slight tactical tweak which has gotten him back amongst the goals. Alegria is in a similar mould, a striker who can hold the ball up well and score goals for fun when needed.

There is no shortage of young attacking options at Rangers’ disposal at the minute, with Tony Weston and Rory Wilson also making their mark in the academy. However, Alegria seems to be the one who could make it to the first-team squad the quickest.

Trusting in these players could save the club millions in the transfer market, and having cost Rangers just £45,000, Alegria might just net the Glasgow giants a huge profit in years to come if he is sold to an interested bidder.

Storey submits Sunderland takeover offer

Sunderland now face a big dilemma as a consortium fronted by William Storey has reportedly now submitted a £42m offer to buy the Wearside club.

The Lowdown: Storey tries again

Storey tried to buy the Stadium of Light faithful back in 2020, but failed in his bid, which leaves Kyril Louis-Dreyfus as the majority shareholder with a 41% stake.

Stewart Donald retains a 34% share, while Juan Sartori holds 20% and Charlie Methven the remaining 5% (The Daily Mail).Nonetheless, it now looks as if Storey is going to try his luck once more, and you’d have to say his timing is impeccably inconvenient given the importance of Friday’s play-off first leg against Sheffield Wednesday. The Latest: Offer madeAs per The Daily Mail, Storey and his consortium are now proposing to take up 100% of the shares, and are ‘keen’ to push through the deal if Alex Neil’s team do not win promotion up to the Championship. They welcome the Owls to Wearside in the first leg of the semi-final tonight, and sources close to the bid insist that there is ‘interest’ from some of the current owners to accept the offer, although there is none from majority shareholder Louis-Dreyfus.The Verdict: Accept it?After the confusion over the details of the ownership structure that came to light back in February, which left supporters feeling misled, now is the time to allow Storey and his consortium to own 100% of the shares, so long as they are committed to the club.It seems as if some of the owners are not at the moment, given the hectic nature of the shares split, and so their takes need to be sold to help the Black Cats move forward in unison.Nonetheless, it looks like Louis-Dreyfus is the one that needs persuading to hand over to Storey, in what is a big dilemma for both him and the club.In other news, find out which injured SAFC star could now make the Wednesday game here!

Worst series of my life – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has described the rain-hit, three-Test series against the West Indies as probably the worst Test series of his life

Sri Lanka’s three-Test series against West Indies that started out so promisingly with Chris Gayle’s triple-hundred ended as a damp squib•AFP

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has described the rain-hit, three-Test series against the West Indies as probably the worst Test series of his life. “I’ve never seen anything like this before,” Sangakkara said after persistent rain washed out the fifth and final day of the third Test at Pallakele. The series was drawn 0-0 with the first and second Tests also ending in draws due to bad weather.”It’s pretty frustrating and it’s tough. I haven’t seen rain like this in a long time. It was pretty frustrating to sit in the dressing room and watch the rain.”Sangakkara called for cricket officials to analyse weather patterns properly before hosting Test matches. “It is tough these days because the weather’s all topsy-turvy. It would have been nice to see if we had alternative venues as well to see if one failed and the weather was not great and preparations were not great we could have gone somewhere else.”But the reports I hear is that it is raining everywhere. I don’t know how feasible that would have been. But it’s always nice to have something as a back up.”The positives for the home side, despite the disappointing series which saw them fall from third to fifth in the ICC Test rankings, were the bowling of spinners Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis, and the batting of opener Tharanga Paranavitana.”Rangana again proved as the most experienced bowler he can do the job whenever it was required,” Sangakkara said. “He bowled against all left-handers and that’s the major reason why we brought him back. He did a fantastic job for us.”It’s heartening to see Ajantha Mendis has come back very strongly in this Test series and Tharanga Paranavitana keeps growing as a solid opener for us. I hope he continues in that vein and keeps fighting for those runs. Those three were the biggest positives we had.”

Mallya raises alarm over vulnerable 'uncapped players'

The end of the IPL’s 2011 auction has shifted the franchises’ focus to filling up their roster of uncapped Indian players, but a controversy has arisen over the rules under which those players are to be signed

Nagraj Gollapudi09-Jan-2011

Vijay Mallya, owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, urged all the franchises to follow the strict guidelines of the IPL governing council related to signing uncapped players•AFP

The end of the IPL’s 2011 auction has shifted the franchises’ focus to filling up their roster of uncapped Indian players, who will form the base of any team. The process begins on Monday but a controversy has arisen over the rules under which those players are to be signed – and a general confusion over those rules hasn’t helped matters. The issue was raised a few minutes after Sunday’s auction by Vijay Mallya, owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who said he wondered whether the BCCI could protect the uncapped – read: young – players from being the subject of a bidding war and other forms of poaching.”Now we look to sign uncapped players and try to complete our team,” Mallya said. “But I urge all the franchises and the IPL governing council to exercise the utmost vigilance while signing uncapped players.”The IPL has, as Mallya noted, laid down “strict guidelines” for the signing of these players, whose value has increased because of the general dearth of domestic talent and the need to fill squad berths. First, it has laid strictures on how these players can be signed, through a three-way agreement involving player, franchise and the IPL, and with the explicit permission of the board. It is the player’s decision, though, whether he wants to sign the contract and he is free to choose his team.It has also clearly categorised these uncapped players into three types and set wage limits for each. Those players who made their debut in the last two years will be paid Rs 10 lakhs ($22,000); those in the field for two to five years would get Rs 20 lakhs and those with more than five years’ experience Rs 30 lakhs. Those two conditions together have raised fears among the franchises – which Mallya vocalised on Sunday – that, far from protecting them from inducements, the system leaves them open to bidding wars that could violate the salary cap. More so because some of these players (see sidebar) could, in open auction, command several times the maximum they can under the BCCI’s rules. The only differentiator in a level playing field, it is feared, will be under-the-table deals.Mallya gave the example of Ravindra Jadeja, who was banned from IPL’s season 3 for attempting to negotiate a contract with a franchise on his own, and without the IPL’s knowledge. He’d been picked by Rajasthan Royals before the IPL’s first season when still an Under-19 player, and hence for a minimal sum, but sought better terms after success with the team. The most sought-after uncapped Indian players

Dhawal Kulkarni (Mumbai), Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Iqbal Abdulla (Mumbai), Manish Pandey (Karnataka), T Suman (Hyderabad), R Satish (Tamil Nadu), Siddarth Trivedi (Gujarat), Abhishek Jhunjhunwala (Bengal), Harmeet Singh (Punjab), Rajat Bhatia (Delhi) Pinal Shah (Baroda)

The current situation could have been avoided, the franchises feel, had the rule not been changed last month. The original plan was for domestic players who had played 75% of their teams’ matches in IPL 3 to be part of the open auction and a transparent bidding process. That rule was changed to the current one following a suggestion from Mumbai Indians. The one ray of hope is the IPL’s “catchment area” rule, which states that franchises have to sign four players from the neighbouring, or “catchment”, areas. That would lessen the bidding war for coveted players but, as one franchise official said, there was “no clarity at all” on the definition and applicability of this rule.On its part the IPL has said it will do everything possible to stop unfair dealings. “That [poaching] is a very difficult situation for us but we will be monitoring,” Chirayu Amin, chairman of the league’s governing council. “If we come to know anything was done underhand we will take stern action against them (player and franchise). I agree that it is a difficult situation but we will be very vigilant.”
