USA takes ICC Americas U-15 Northern Division title

USA’s Under-15 squad claimed first place on Saturday at the 2011 ICC Americas U-15 Northern Division Tournament held in Winnipeg, Canada

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2011USA’s Under-15 squad claimed first place on Saturday at the 2011 ICC Americas U-15 Northern Division Tournament held at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Canada. USA started off the tournament with back-to-back wins against Bermuda and Canada and eventually won the tournament on a net run-rate tiebreaker after all three teams finished 2-2 in the double round-robin format event.”It feels great. It’s amazing,” USA U-15 captain Dave Parikh said. “This is just the second time I’ve been captain of a team and we came through. We were the underdogs in this tournament and coming up through the top is great.”Parikh was named Tournament MVP after leading his side with seven wickets while giving away a tournament low 2.63 runs per over. He was the team second-highest scorer with 108 runs, including 67 not out in a victory over Canada, one of four half-centuries scored by USA. He was one of six players on the team who also represented the North West U-15 squad at the 2011 USACA U-15 National Tournament, where the North West took their fourth straight U-15 national championship after a dramatic five-run win against New York in the final, something that Parikh feels helped prepare players for success in Winnipeg.”The most important thing I learned from that match was to have faith in your players and to never give up,” Parikh said. “I honestly thought that match was finished, that New York would have won the match, but we came through.”Vibhav Altekar, who scored a double-hundred for North West in the national tournament last month, led USA with 140 runs from four innings with one half-century to finish second overall behind Canada’s Abrash Khan. Neil Tagare, another player selected from the North West region, turned in the highest individual score for any player at the event with 79 against Bermuda. Another noteworthy performer for USA was Michigan’s Gordon Makin, who made a superb 65 in a loss to Bermuda.Khan and Gayan Ferdinands stood out as ones to watch in the future for Canada with Ferdinands taking a tournament-high 12 wickets. Bermuda’s Delray Rawlins also showed excellent all-rounds skills at the top of the batting order along with his left-arm orthodox spin.At the same U-15 tournament in 2009, Steven Taylor and Nitish Kumar captained the USA and Canada squads respectively. Both players have gone on to excel at the U-19 level and have also played for their country’s senior teams. Parikh says he’s gained confidence from being part of a winning squad for USA and hopes he might be able to progress in the same way.”After coming off as the underdogs and winning this, I feel like I have a strong future in cricket,” Parikh said. “I think that I should really put some effort in for the Under-19s, try out, play my hardest and really see what I can do for that team.”

Debuts for Copeland and Lyon; Khawaja to play

Seamer Trent Copeland and offspinner Nathan Lyon will make their Test debuts for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle

Trent Copeland will make his international debut in Galle•AFP

Seamer Trent Copeland and offspinner Nathan Lyon will make their Test debuts for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Usman Khawaja edged Shaun Marsh out of the side, and will get his chance to bat at No. 6 in a line-up that was named one day early.Lyon, who won the tussle for the lone spinner’s spot with Michael Beer, is trained as a groundsman, and was seen in conversation with Greg Chappell, the selector on duty, before making a close inspection of the pitch. He extracted useful turn from the practice wickets either side of the match strip, though, appeared no more dangerous than Copeland, who beat the bat frequently. It has been a most extraordinary rise for the 23-year-old Lyon, who until the first day of the tour match against Sri Lanka Board XI had never bowled in front of his captain Michael Clarke. Lyon made his debut for South Australia in the domestic Twenty20 tournament last year, where his performances won him rapid promotion to his state’s Shield team and the Australia A team on the limited-overs leg of a tour of Zimbabwe. To date, he has taken 14 wickets in five first-class matches. While there, he impressed all with his flight, loop and spin, and these aggressive attributes pushed him ahead of Beer, who played his first Test at the SCG at the conclusion of the Ashes. Lyon becomes the 11th spin bowler to be tried for Australia since Shane Warne retired in 2007. He will be used as an attacking, wicket-taking option by the tourists, who have arguably been given that option by Copeland’s emergence as a stingy seam-up type not seen in Australian colours since Stuart Clark’s time was up.Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan said that while the surface will take spin, its dry nature would aid reverse-swing. The breeze from the Indian Ocean is also known to help the fast bowlers. Copeland is likely be used for long, tight spells while Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris tear in at the other end.Michael Clarke acknowledged Copeland’s strengths, which have also been cited by numerous locals, as likely to be exceptionally useful in Sri Lankan wickets. Also central to his thinking is the fact that Johnson and Harris will be more capable of slipping in quick, aggressive spells with the support of Copeland.”The greatest advantage Copes has is his statistics in first-class cricket don’t tell a lie,” Clarke said. “There’s a reason he’s had success there and I’m certain it’ll be the same reason he [will] have success for Australia. He’s got great control. Very rarely do you see too many blokes hitting him with the middle of the bat consistently and I think that’s because he’s got good height and he just wobbles the ball enough. I’m a big wrap for him – I love his control, I love the way he bowled in the first game.”He bowls a lot of overs for not many runs, so that’s a great strength. In these conditions if the wickets are flat, it gives you the option to set fields he can bowl to. Because his pace is a little bit slower, he generally has more control so he can bowl more to a field than someone who is bowling at 150km/h.”There have been 12 outright results from the 17 Test matches played at the Galle International Stadium since 1998, nine of them enjoyed by the hosts. Only when rain intervenes, as it did when the Australians first played here in 1999, do the chances of a firm outcome dissipate.Clarke, in his first Test as Australia’s fully-fledged Test captain, could not help but notice the lack of grass on a good length at either end of the pitch. Whatever excess foliage remained in the middle had been shaved off by the ground staff by the time the Australians returned for their final training session.”It looked dry at the ends yesterday; it looked like they had cut the grass off the ends but left the grass in the middle of the wicket,” Clarke said. “But I got a phone call last night saying when we left the ground they shaved that as well. I don’t know what happened after training but the wicket seemed to have changed.”It’s pretty hard as well; it will definitely spin but I don’t know if it will spin [from] day one or day two. There might be a bit more pace and bounce than what we had in the practice game. It will spin, but it is just a matter of how early or how much.”Australia have misread overseas pitches before, no more disastrously than the dry surface for the fifth Ashes Test at the Oval in 2009, when no specialist spinner was chosen. However Clarke said it was important the tourists did not get spooked by the perceived threat of the conditions, and chose the combination most likely to succeed in the team’s first Test since the horrors of the previous home summer.”I just think with the first match of the series we’ve got to get the right combination,” Clarke said. “If we think the quicks are going to be our best solution to take 20 wickets then we have to go with three fast bowlers no matter what Sri Lanka do, or no matter if we think it’s going to spin. Looking at that wicket yesterday looks quite hard and dry and that will bring reverse-swing into play … if it’s hard there might be a bit more carry into play as well.”Australia XI for Galle: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Phil Hughes, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Usman Khawaja, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Trent Copeland, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Nathan Lyon. (12th man – Michael Beer)

'Opening partnership was outstanding'

Ross Taylor and John Wright, New Zealand’s captain and coach, have praised the exploits of their openers, Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum, who secured a 2-0 victory in the Twenty20 series in Zimbabwe with century opening partnerships.”The opening partnership was outstanding,” Taylor said. “To get over 100 two games in a row sets a benchmark. Brendon and ‘Guppy’ [Guptill] batted sensibly and complemented each other very well.”Guptill and Taylor added 127 in 13.3 overs to secure a ten-wicket win in the first T20 and then put on 120 in 11.1 overs in the second to help New Zealand post 187 in 18 overs.”Both Brendon and Guppy have played really, really well,” Wright said. “It’s an ideal opportunity in this country, because the batting conditions are very good. Their stroke play has been encouraging. We haven’t had a lot of batting outside the top three, but that will address itself in the 50-over format.”Guptill, who scored 40 and 67 in the two T20s, had spent New Zealand’s off-season with Derbyshire and he said there was no rustiness because he had been in touch with the game. “I played a lot of cricket when I was over there [Derbyshire] so there was no stiff legs after the first game so that was quite handy,” Guptill told the . “We started off very well in the first Twenty20 and to back it up with a batting and bowling performance like that [in the second T20] is very pleasing.”New Zealand will begin the one-day leg of their tour of Zimbabwe in Harare on October 20.

Australians get hostile initiation despite win

South Africa A have played their part in softening Australia up ahead of the two-Test series against the senior side next week

South Africa A have played their part in softening Australia up ahead of the two-Test series against the senior side next week. Although Australia won the four-day tour match in Potchefstroom with more than a day to spare, their batsmen did not have maximum time in the middle on a lively pitch, which offered plenty of assistance to the bowlers.”We don’t want a red carpet rolled out with a white wicket and teams come and bat for three days,” Vincent Barnes, South Africa High Performance and A team coach, said. “That’s why we batted first. The wicket looked a bit sporty but we felt we wanted to bat twice and give them [Australia] as little time as possible in the middle so they leave here a bit undercooked.”Australia’s quicks, particularly Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle, enjoyed the seamer-friendly pitch, which saw them bowl South Africa A out for 183 before tea on the first day. In a low-scoring match, Australia were then dismissed for 236 and no team was able to score more than 264 in an innings.Thirteen wickets fell on both the first and second day before the pitch flattened and dried on the third, with Australia getting the easier batting conditions as they neared victory. South Africa A were not too disappointed by their defeat, saying the manner in which it was achieved will probably give the country a headstart in the psychological battle.”We didn’t want them to take as much as they could out of the game,” Barnes said. “One or two of them are still walking around thinking ‘I haven’t really had good preparation in this game,’ especially a guy like Ponting.” Ponting scored 31 runs in the match and did not have enough time to play himself in or enjoy a decent knock.Far from being hospitable hosts, the South Africa A side were openly hostile in the field. The South African fielders were not short of a word throughout Australia’s chase and made it clear that the battle lines had been drawn, even though the series is a shortened, two-match one.”That’s our responsibility; to make sure these guys go into the Test series feeling a bit underdone,” Alviro Petersen, South Africa A captain, said, “We wanted to make sure that they know playing in South Africa is going to be hard work.”Petersen, who was dropped from the Test squad to make room for Jacques Rudolph, grafted out 103 in tough conditions and had some advice to pass on to the national batsmen. “Their bowlers, when they get a bit tired, it’s easier to score off them,” he said. “They also don’t have a world class spinner, although the spinner that they do have, there’s something there.”Barnes was more bullish about South Africa’s ability to handle the Australian attack. “We are in a better position against their bowlers,” he said, adding that the key match-up in the Test series will be between both team’s pace bowlers and that South Africa have the edge. “Our bowlers are better in our conditions and I believe our batters can handle their attack.”Mitchell Johnson, who finished the match with nine-wickets and resumed a profitable relationship with South African pitches, was identified as the biggest threat. “He can change a game in one session, he showed it here this morning” Petersen said. Johnson ripped through South Africa’s tail with three wickets in five overs in the first hour and Petersen felt he was probably the leading bowler for Australia at this stage. While South Africa A saw their main task as sizing up the opposition ahead of an important Test series, Barnes described their role a “two-fold,” with their second component to analyse the resources in the country. “It showed us that the cupboards are not bare,” Barnes said.He was particularly heartened by the bowling options he saw, with 21-year-old Marchant de Lange stealing the headlines with his five-for in Australia’s first innings. “Marchant has come and bowled unbelievably well. He’s got a long way to go and a lot to learn but he showed us that there is something there,” Barnes said. “He just pulled Wayne Parnell with him. That’s the best I’ve seen Wayne bowl in first-class cricket.” Parnell was aggressive and used the bouncer to good effect. He has been seen as an outside contender for the Test squad, having never completed a full season of first-class cricket in South Africa, because of his international commitments.Vernon Philander, who has been included in the Test squad, is, according to Barnes “ready to play.” Philander will compete with Lonwabo Tsotsobe for the third seamers’ spot and Barnes expects it to be tough for the selectors to choose between them, especially since Philander has taken 80 wickets in the previous two seasons of first-class cricket.”Vern is a highly skillful bowler. If there’s anything in the wicket, he is going to exploit it. He also has added advantage of batting,” Barnes said. With the first Test at Newlands, Philander’s hunting ground, Barnes said he won’t be surprised to see Philander get his first cap. “You might want to use somebody who has played there for most of his career.”Barnes also had a compliment for Petersen, who has handled his rejection with classy composure. “That’s one of the better 100s I’ve seen in a while under the conditions and the bowling,” he said. Petersen, on the other hand, chose not to dwell on being dropped. “I think Jacques Rudolph played really well in the last year or two and I think he deserves his call up,” he said. “I was just the unfortunate one to be left out.”
