Compton denied but Suppiah and Hildreth tuck in

Arul Suppiah and James Hildreth scored hundreds as Somerset made the home bowlers toil on day one

It would probably be best not to raise the subject with Mark Ramprakash but even someone low on form and down on confidence would have fancied his chances of making good runs on this benign pitch. As for Somerset, they do not have too many top-order strugglers right now and most of their batsmen who made it to the middle on Wednesday duly tucked in.It is impossible not to feel some sympathy for Ramprakash, who has been dropped by Surrey after managing just 62 runs in eight Championship knocks. Almost all those innings were played in extremely challenging conditions and yet the surface produced for this match looked, and has so far played, like the answer to an anxious batsman’s prayers.Time will tell whether Ramprakash’s colleagues make hay with as much ease as Somerset have done to date. But they will need to get their heads down because the men from the West Country, led by hundreds from Arul Suppiah and James Hildreth, are on course for a formidable total – even though run machine Nick Compton stalled when in sight of his fourth century of the first-class season.Nothing looked more certain than three figures for Compton. He reached 83 with scarcely a false shot and then pushed forward, having put in a decent stride, at medium-pacer Zander de Bruyn as tea beckoned. There were two noises, or so it sounded, but umpire Trevor Jesty was confident that pad came first and raised the finger.Shock or what? Compton’s average has ‘tumbled’ to 117 but he still has perhaps four more innings to move from 819 runs to 1,000 and become the first batsman since Graeme Hick in 1988 to reach that grand mark before the end of May.Somerset, though, are anything but a one-batsman team. They may be missing Marcus Trescothick at the top of the order (and are so depleted generally by injuries that 18-year-old identical twins Craig and Jamie Overton are both playing here) but most of the senior men have found some form this campaign. They found a bit more today, helped it must be said by not only a sound surface but also a Surrey bowling attack – missing both Jade Dernbach and Tim Linley because of the county’s rotation policy – that lacked discipline in terms of line and length.Suppiah and Hildreth succeeded where Compton, unusually, failed by scoring centuries that were, in both cases, highly entertaining and expertly compiled. And yet it was the 20-year-old opener Alex Barrow who set the tone early on with a rapid, boundary-filled innings of 47.Barrow drove merrily until Stuart Meaker adjusted his length to have the youngster caught at gully. But even at that stage Surrey’s decision to play Chris Jordan and George Edwards ahead of Dernbach and Linley seemed flawed – and so it proved.Suppiah and Compton enjoyed a double-century partnership against Notts last month and looked for all the world as though they would repeat the feat here. Other than when Compton called his partner for a particularly sharp single that required Suppiah to dive full length for safety, nothing appeared to trouble them a great deal.Compton, as is his way these days, gave the bowlers zero encouragement while Suppiah – having initially played second fiddle to Barrow – went through the gears with alacrity to gather boundaries all around the wicket. Not every shot from the opener was out of middle, for sure, but it was entertaining to watch and he thoroughly deserved his hundred.Suppiah did not get many more, mind, after raising the bat. He was run out for 106 after being sent back, rightly it seemed, by Compton as Surrey ended the second wicket stand on 143 through a good stop and throw from Tom Maynard. Compton’s exit was an even bigger bonus for the hosts but they had to wait until just before the close – and another lbw verdict that went in de Bruyn’s favour – to get rid of Hildreth.Somerset’s acting captain played beautifully throughout. His touch and timing were almost faultless and even the stroke he eased over midwicket, off Jon Lewis, seemed effortless. Add 16 fours to that one six and it was no wonder Surrey were mightily relieved to see the back of Hildreth, but there is still power for the visitors to add to the first-day punishment.

Shillingford puts West Indies on top

Shane Shillingford finished day one with four wickets and put West Indies in a strong position as the Australian batsmen struggled to handle his bounce and turn

The Report by Brydon Coverdale23-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAustralia struggled to handle Shane Shillingford’s bounce•AFP

Get the sign-writer ready. If Shane Shillingford’s first day of Test cricket in his home nation was an audition to have a stand named after him at Windsor Park, it couldn’t have gone much better. Shillingford finished the day with four wickets and put West Indies in a strong position as the Australian batsmen struggled to handle his bounce and turn, and at the close of play West Indies had given themselves a chance of the victory they needed to draw the series.Of course, with four days still to play, there was plenty of time for the Australians to fight back. But 212 for 7 was far from the score the captain Michael Clarke was anticipating when he won the toss and chose to bat. David Warner made 50 and Shane Watson scored 41 but neither they nor their colleagues looked truly comfortable, initially against the swing of Ravi Rampaul and then against Shillingford’s spin.At stumps, Matthew Wade was on 22 and had fought hard to survive 72 balls, while the recalled Mitchell Starc was on 24, having struck a six late in the day. But West Indies had taken the second new ball and it was curving in the air enough to challenge the two left-handers, and the morning session on the second day promised to be a tough one for Australia’s lower order. Not that it was pace that caused the most problems on day one.Shillingford, playing in his home country of Dominica, used his height to great effect, troubling the batsmen with bounce and bite off the pitch. He ended the day with 4 for 77 but created far more chances besides those that brought wickets. Ricky Ponting and Clarke had both been especially hampered by Shillingford and he eventually had the reward of removing them both.Shortly after he passed Rahul Dravid to become the second-highest run scorer in Test cricket, Ponting departed for 23 when he gloved a ball that turned and bounced more than he expected, and Darren Sammy ran around from leg slip to take the catch square of the wicket. A few overs later, Clarke (24) was also done by the bounce and gloved the ball to short leg.Shillingford’s fourth arrived when Michael Hussey, on 10, edged another fine delivery and was brilliantly taken at slip by Sammy, whose reflexes were quick enough that he could run to his left and grab the ball with his arm outstretched. It was a just reward for Shillingford, who had been a threat all day, initially without luck.Smart stats

Ricky Ponting went past Rahul Dravid to go second on the list of leading run-getters in Tests. However, his bad form against West Indies continued. In his last nine innings, he has scored 180 runs at 22.50.

David Warner scored 50 off 136 balls at a strike rate of 36.76. It is the fifth-lowest for an Australian opener since 2000 (half-centuries only).

Australia scored 212 off the 90 overs at a run-rate of just 2.35. it is their second-lowest run-rate in an innings in this series. The overall run-rate in the three Tests (2.67) is the lowest for Australia against West Indies since 1990 (min three Tests).

Shane Shillingford’s 4 for 77 is his best bowling performance in Tests surpassing his 4 for 123 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010.

There have been only six half-centuries scored in this series for Australia. It is the joint-lowest number of fifty-plus scores for Australia in a three-Test series since 1990.

Kemar Roach chipped in later in the day with a well-directed bouncer that caught the glove of Ryan Harris on the way through to the wicketkeeper, before Wade and Starc came together. Their partnership had grown to 43 by stumps and the close perhaps came at the right time for the hosts, who can start afresh on Tuesday. They had started about as well as they could have hoped on Monday. Rampaul, included for his first match of the series after Fidel Edwards was ruled out due to injury, curved his second ball in beautifully and surprised Ed Cowan, who offered no shot and was lbw. The only aspect of the dismissal that did not represent a misjudgement by Cowan was his decision not to ask for a review.Rampaul was impressive with the new ball, swinging it and troubling the batsmen, and he didn’t concede a run until his 17th delivery. He should have had a second wicket when Warner, on 5, edged to third slip but the captain Sammy spilled a simple chance and to add to the frustration for West Indies, Sammy introduced himself in the next over and was duly driven for four by Warner.Warner and Watson steadied Australia and both men were able to survive, despite looking scratchy early. On the rare occasions that the bowlers overpitched or dropped short, they drove or pulled well, but never did they appear truly settled. Their 83-run stand came to a close when Watson, on 41 from 120 balls, top-edged an attempted pull off Sammy and was caught at deep square leg.Soon afterwards, Warner, on 50, cut uppishly and was caught at cover point, delivering Shillingford his first wicket, and the Roseau crowd their first moment of home-town pride for the day. There were plenty more to come.

Woakes and Wright wreck Derbyshire

Warwickshire went top of Group C as they crushed a weakened Derbyshire by 105 runs in a one-sided match.

04-Jun-2012
ScorecardWarwickshire went top of Group C as they crushed a weakened Derbyshire by 105 runs in a one-sided match.Derbyshire’s chances of chasing down Warwickshire’s 242 for 6 vanished in the first five overs when Chris Woakes and Chris Wright reduced them to 25 for 4, before Steffan Piolet claimed his best one-day figures of 4 for 31 as the home side were skittled for 137 in 32.1 overs.Tim Ambrose anchored the Bears innings with an unbeaten 77 from 92 balls and shared stands of 90 in 17 overs with Darren Maddy and 76 in eight with former Derbyshire skipper Rikki Clarke, who provided late acceleration with 48 from 29 balls.Derbyshire went into the match without attacking New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill who has a broken finger and three front-line bowlers, and the game was over as a contest once Woakes and Wright had blown away the top order.Woakes, who took 3 for 46, struck twice in his opening over before Wright removed Wayne Madsen with an unplayable lifter, leaving Piolet to cash in with only Jon Clare offering any real resistance with 57 from 54 balls. With their own hopes of reaching the semi-finals damaged by two defeats in the opening three games, Derbyshire rested pace bowlers Tony Palladino and Tim Groenewald along with spinner David Wainwright.Mark Turner bowled well on a slow surface to remove both openers and when a direct hit accounted for captain Jim Troughton, the visitors had some rebuilding to do at 66 for 3 in the 14th over. But Ambrose and Maddy worked the ball around to establish a platform for Clarke who opened his shoulders to drive and pull three sixes before he holed out to long on to give Alex Hughes his first wicket for Derbyshire.Derbyshire’s reply began disastrously when Chesney Hughes played on and Wes Durston was caught behind first ball and the slide continued with Madsen edging to second slip and Dan Redfern falling to a loose drive.Piolet then demolished the lower order to reduce the home side to 86 for 7 and only some defiant blows by Clare gave the innings a measure of respectability. He pulled Woakes into the car park to reach his half century and was last out when he sliced Wright to third man to give Warwickshire their second victory over Derbyshire in the competition.

Moeen's best ask Lancs questions

It has taken Lancashire less than two matches to realise that adapting to the new Old Trafford will be anything but an easy adjustment. They face a major battle to avoid a convincing defeat against Worcestershire.

It has taken Lancashire less than two matches to realise that adapting to the new Old Trafford will be anything but an easy adjustment. Comprehensively outplayed by Nottinghamshire in their only other championship match since the turning of the square, they face another major battle to avoid a similarly convincing defeat against Worcestershire.Playing on one of the new wickets created by the turning of the square for the first time, the two sides read it totally differently. Lancashire believed it would benefit their seamers and allowed Gary Keedy, their veteran left-arm spinner, to join the second team at Southport while Worcestershire took one look and played two spinners. It has proved a crucial decision with Lancashire losing eight wickets for 54 runs in 149 balls and needed a 43-run last wicket stand between Simon Kerrigan and Kyle Hogg just to avoid the follow-on after losing all 10 wickets to Moeen Ali’s off-spin and the left-arm spin of Shaaik Choudhry. By the time rain halted play 36 overs short on the second day, Worcestershire had established a crucial 138 runs lead and 17 wickets have so far fallen to spin.”We saw the practice surface they were bowling on the day before and it looked quite similar,” explained Ali, who finished with career-best figures of 6 for 67. “I’ve seen these sorts of pitches quite a lot before when I’ve been abroad in Asian countries and that’s why we played two spinners. We thought it was going to spin big straight away and we were surprised when Keedy didn’t play, which was obviously good for us.”Generating extra bounce from the Pavilion End, while Choudhry’s lower trajectory allowed the ball to grip and skid onto the batsman from the Statham End, they presented a difficult challenge bowling in tandem for 35 successive overs. It was one that tested the composure and technique of Lancashire’s batting line-up and, with one or two exceptions, it was one they failed.Stephen Moore set the template by charging Ali and picking out mid-on, Karl Brown was stumped trying to charge Choudhry, Tom Smith was caught off a leading edge trying to sweep Ali, who also claimed three wickets with Lancashire’s lower order fending off balls with extra bounce to short leg.Steven Croft, in particular, can feel a little aggrieved after playing back to a sharply-turning delivery from Choudhry that clipped his off-stump, but otherwise coach Peter Moores is sure to hold an inquest into such a damning batting performance. It was a particularly impressive display from Choudhry, whose 4 for 38 was also a career-best, after several weeks of inaction during the Twenty20 programme.Without a championship victory since beating Lancashire at New Road with two matches remaining last summer, a win that all but secured their first division status, Worcestershire’s remarkable turnaround may yet prompt another late bid to avoid relegation. With two more championship matches at Old Trafford before the end of the summer, Lancashire will also need to learn how to read the new pitches better if they are not to be dragged into a relegation battle of their own.”The wicket was a bit damp on the first morning and we thought that when it dried out it would flatten out for a couple of days and then turn on the last day,” explained Kerrigan. “We haven’t played too much championship cricket at Old Trafford in the last two years, so we didn’t really know what it was going to do.”On a pitch like this, there is a bit more pressure on me as a spinner to get wickets, but it is nothing I am not used to. I have had similar scenarios in other games. If you shy away from it, you don’t deserve a place in the side, so I am looking forward to it.”
