Alastair Cook has assured Monty Panesar that the door is not closed on him in terms of an England comeback.Panesar was released by his county, Sussex, earlier this week after he was fined by police for his part in a drunken incident in Brighton that involved the player urinating over nightclub bouncers in the early hours of the morning. But while Cook admitted that Panesar had “let the England shirt down”, he also acknowledged his qualities as a bowler and let him know that he will be welcomed back into the side if he can demonstrate he has made the necessary “changes in his life”.”What’s happened over the last couple of weeks has been disappointing,” Cook said. “I’ve spoken to him – he actually rang me – which shows he knows he’s done wrong and let the England shirt down a bit.”But he recognises he needs a bit of a change in his life which I think is always the first step.”The bottom line is that we need Monty back bowling as well as he can bowl. The way back is through taking wickets and he knows that. We know he has that pedigree in international cricket.”Panesar has started the process of change by joining Cook’s county side, Essex. And while Cook admitted that move had taken him by surprise, he welcomed it.”I didn’t know he was going to Essex,” Cook said. “I thought he was going to Northants. I’m not the be-all and end-all at Essex. But I’m glad we get a quality spinner and I’m going to get a nice good look at him at Essex.”Apart from taking wickets, though, Panesar will also need to demonstrate that he is committed to team success and has no problems with alcohol. Panesar had been dropped by Sussex earlier in the season for a poor on-field attitude.”I don’t really know all the details,” Cook said. “But he has that side of his life that he definitely needs to get right because we know what an off-field life can do to you.”Everyone is saying, ‘Is the door shut?’ It’s certainly not, but he knows what he must do to get back.”It was not the most pleasant phone call for him to make – to the England captain to apologise. But we know the class Monty has as a bowler and what he can do when he gets it right. We’ve seen that time and again. He just has to go back to basics, work as hard as he can and do what he does best – which is taking wickets. If he does it for Essex, it’s even better for me.”

I'm standing for elections – Srinivasan

N Srinivasan has said he will stand for re-election as BCCI president at the Indian board’s annual general meeting, to be held in Chennai on September 29. The announcement is not a surprise but his success, a foregone conclusion a few months ago, is now hostage to several legal and judicial issues that are beyond his control and may crystallise formal opposition to him.Under BCCI rules, any presidential candidate has to be nominated by two associations from the incumbent’s home zone – south zone in Srinivasan’s case, and that is where the focus is shifting. As Srinivasan left the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday after attending a meeting of the board’s marketing committee, he was asked if the other members from south zone were standing besides him. His response was succinct: “I am going to stand,” he said, before taking a dig at the media for speculating on the numbers game in the event of an election. While Srinivasan has made his candidature public, it cannot be ascertained at this point if the murmurs within the board opposing Srinivasan’s stubbornness to hold on to the chair will turn into a credible organised lobby sufficient to match Srinivasan both in terms of stature and power. The early runner seems to be Shashank Manohar, Srinivasan’s predecessor, a lawyer with a no-nonsense yet low-profile attitude.Manohar hasn’t yet made any concrete or public move towards returning to job he left in 2011 but it is believed that efforts are on to persuade him to contest against Srinivasan. One official privy to the developments told ESPNcricinfo that Manohar has shown interest but he is still gauging his support, especially from the south zone.Manohar, who hails from the central zone, will need a proposer and a seconder from the south zone – most of whose members are staunch Srinivasan loyalists. It is believed that the anti-Srinivasan lobby – comprising senior politicians in New Delhi who are also part of the BCCI top brass – has been exerting political pressure on the Goa Cricket Association to shift its allegiance from Srinivasan. The same lobby is also working on the Andhra Cricket Association to be the other member needed to set up a candidate. “Our stand is still undecided. We will discuss with our member units and then decide, since there is no hurry as such,” an ACA official said on Thursday. Both sides also have an eye on two important legal developments that could impact the election. One involves the IPL fixing case, in relation to which Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested in May. Mumbai Police is expected to file its chargesheet any day and the gravity of the charges against Meiyappan could play a part.Srinivasan himself has already been chargesheeted – in his capacity as managing director of India Cements – in a corruption case involving a top political leader from Andhra Pradesh. If he is arrested in this case – and it is not impossible, given the high-level political machinations at work – then the board might agree to replace him as the BCCI president, even though the issue has nothing to do with cricket. “If that happens, we will have to find a new face,” a Srinivasan confidant conceded. It is these uncertainties that the Cricket Association of Bihar has sought to tap into through a public appeal to the BCCI members. The CAB – which is not a part of the BCCI – had filed the petition in Bombay High Court against the constitution of the IPL probe commission and on Tuesday made a “sincere appeal” to BCCI members to reject Srinivasan’s candidature. “He continues to be in a ‘step aside’ situation as president,” the appeal said. “The BCCI cannot afford to have a president who will be in a permanent state of ‘step aside’ and not be involved in its day-to-day affairs.”Despite all this, Srinivasan remains the most powerful person in the board and the man to beat in the elections. He has the support of many member associations but, as the BCCI AGM draws closer, the equation within the board could yet change dramatically.

Fast bowler Fidel Edwards will join the West Indies A squad in India as the replacement for the injured left-arm seamer Sheldon Cotterell. Cotterell had to pull out of the tour after suffering from pain in his left knee.Cotterrell was named in both the limited-overs and four-day squads but did not play any of the three one-dayers or the one-off T20. He was not in the XI for the ongoing unofficial Test in Mysore.”It was a devastating blow when we found out that Sheldon was injured and could not play. He is one of the most promising quick bowlers we have in the West Indies,” team manager Lockhart Sebastien said. “We were looking forward to seeing him perform well on this tour for the West Indies A team, but unfortunately he has been ruled out due to injury.”He was impressive in recent months, especially in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and this was a great chance for him to show his skills again. We are still confident we have the bowlers to do the job and we expect the team to continue doing well on this tour.”Edwards last played for West Indies during the tour of Bangladesh late last year. He didn’t feature in West Indies’ home international season this year but played the CPL, in which he took nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul.Besides Edwards, the other seamers in the West Indies A squad in India are Miguel Cummins, Delorn Johnson and the allrounder Jonathan Carter.

CSA introduce quota for black African players

A black African quota has been passed in South Africa, requiring franchises to field at least one player from the country’s majority race group and amateur teams, two

A black African quota has been passed in South Africa, under which franchises will have to field at least one player from the country’s majority race group, and amateur teams, two. Those franchises who have more than one black African in 70% of their matches will be reimbursed an amount equivalent to the average contract cost of the qualified players. The new policy will take effect from October 16, 2013.This comes after CSA held their first transformation (conference) in over a decade and a proposal was drawn up to introduce a quota requiring franchises to play two black African players. At the organisation’s AGM, held today, the board voted on an incentive-driven policy that expects the teams to include at least one black african player, with monetary benefit to franchises who exceed that.”These new requirements are incentive based, not quota based,” Haroon Lorgat, the CSA chief executive, said. “We have a very talented population. We have all embraced the need to accelerate transformation.””The CSA Board has also supported a recommendation from the Cricket committee to implement a more flexible player loan agreement to facilitate the development of black African players. This is currently being drafted in consultation with the South African cricketers Association (SACA).”The board will monitor the performance and progress made by the black African players in the domestic competition in the coming season before considering any further proposals for the next season.Since South Africa’s reintroduction to international cricket in 1991, only five black African players have made it to the Test level even though the group forms 80% of South Africa’s population. Makhaya Ntini is the only one who has played more than 100 Tests, while Mfuneko Ngam, Thami Tsolekile, Monde Zondeki and Lonwabo Tsotsobe have appeared in only 17 matches in all. In contrast, 11 mixed-race players, including Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir, have made it to the South African side.South Africa introduced a quota system in 1998 to address the racial discrimination caused by the Apartheid system. The stipulation then was that every team had to field four players of colour – a term which encompasses black Africans, mixed-race people and those of Asian descent. It was officially removed in 2007.A recent report presented to CSA contained information that most black African players give up the game between the under-19 and provincial level, at an age at which, if they are not contracted, will need to find jobs. The report also revealed that when black African players do get into the system, they are often further sidelined. Only two black African players turned out in more than 80% of their franchises’ games last season and when they did, they bowled less overs and batted lower down than players of other races.
