Viljoen stars in Namibia 91-run win

A round-up of all the World Cup 2015 qualifiers on January 15, 2013

Christi Viljoen’s all-round heroics helped Namibia to a crushing 91-run win over Netherlands in Mount Maunganui. Batting first, Namibia’s openers added 35 in 6.2 overs before both departed in quick succession. Sarel Burger, the captain, and Craig Williams built on their good work by adding 57 runs for the third wicket. Although Netherlands struck twice in three overs, Namibia were well in control as Gerrie Snyman (74) and Viljoen (46*) compiled an 85-run partnership to help take Namibia to 253 for 6. Mudassar Bukhari was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 40.The Netherlands chase began with Michael Swart and Wesley Barresi falling for low scores as Netherlands stumbled to 25 for 2. Peter Borren, the captain, and Stephan Myburgh added 40 before things came undone as Viljoen and Bernard Scholtz plucked three wickets in quick succession to leave Netherlands at a precarious 66 for 5. Michael Rippon hit a plucky 44 off 73 balls, but couldn’t keep the chase on course as Netherlands succumbed to a 91-run loss. Viljoen once again starred with figures of 4 for 33.UAE captain Khurram Khan put in a solid performance with bat and ball to ensure his side maintained their undefeated record in New Zealand as they recorded a comfortable 80-run win over Canada in Rangiora. UAE posted an imposing 286 for 6 after winning the toss and batting first in an innings highlighted by a 130-run second wicket partnership between Khurram (88) and Amjad Ali (91). Khurram – who also picked up a fine for disciplinary breaches during the game – was eventually run out with six overs remaining while Ali was bowled by Khurram Chohan, who finished with Canada’s best figures on the day taking 3 for 65, but the rest of the Canadian attack lacked penetration. In reply, Canada’s top order was wiped out inside of five overs to leave them struggling at 9 for 3 before captain Jimmy Hansra partnered with Raza-ur-Rehman to resuscitate the innings with an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, UAE’s bowling unit managed to keep the run rate down and Khurram eventually broke the stand by dismissing Rehman at the start of the 30th over for 43. With the required run rate getting out of hand and victory unlikely, Canada focused on batting out all 50 overs. Hansra finished on 100 not out off 119 balls as Canada ended on 206 for 6. Khurram was named Man of the Match after finishing with 2 for 35 in nine overs to go along with his first innings half-century.

J&K set 324 for win after Mandeep 101

Mandeep Singh scored 101 and added 113 for the seventh wicket with Gurkeerat Singh to help Punjab set Jammu & Kashmir a daunting target of 324

So far, each day of the quarter-final between Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir has followed a set template: Top-order batsmen falter against the seamers in the morning before someone from the middle scores heavily towards the end of the day. Harbhajan Singh and Umar Nazir were the standout performers on the first day, while Parvez Rasool and Sandeep Sharma rose to the occasion on the second. On the third day, Mandeep Singh’s second century of the season helped Punjab set a daunting 324-run target, despite a poor start in the morning. J&K, though, responded with ferocity, as Adil Rishi struck six fours – a few of them over the infield – to take the team past 50. But his aggression ultimately consumed him as he edged VRV Singh behind. The other batsmen however remained unfazed, as they followed the same approach to help J&K to 77 for 2 at the close of play. The way J&K have fought over the last three days, Punjab know they cannot be complacent. If J&K can tread through the morning session with minimum damage, another engrossing day is in the offing on Saturday.Punjab felt the heat on a chilly third morning. They were already two down overnight, and lost three more wickets within the first hour. They could have lost more as the J&K seamers moved the ball around like it was on strings.Yuvraj Singh was lucky to survive that first hour when an edge off Nazir didn’t carry to first slip. He even got a couple of streaky boundaries through gully. Mandeep, on the other hand, came out and batted on a different plane. Just like Rasool’s innings on the second day had helped others, Mandeep’s confidence rubbed on to Yuvraj.Mandeep started off with a couple of gorgeous drives through cover before slapping a short ball authoritatively through midwicket. Suddenly, Punjab’s innings which appeared to be stuck in a mire in the first hour, found its wheels as the two batsmen helped the team recover from 50 for 5 to post 112 by the 35th over.Yuvraj had slowly moved to the 30s and as Rasool came into bowl, he showed some of his old class by chipping the spinner for an effortless six over long on. Two balls later, he tried to repeat the shot, but could only connect with the toe-end of the bat to give an an easy catch for Samiullah Beigh at mid-on. At that stage, Punjab were still a long way from safety. The match was J&K’s to control and the team needed quick wickets. However, just like the previous two days, the batsmen took advantage of the easing conditions as Gurkeerat Singh set about building his innings at a scorching pace. He started with a flurry of fours-a couple of straight drives, a powerful sweep and a couple of cover drives- which helped him overtake Mandeep soon after lunch. Gurkeerat then reached his half-century off just 43 balls and Mandeep followed suit soon after, as Punjab cruised past 200.But just like Yuvraj, Gurkeerat was out to Rasool immediately after hitting him for a six. Rasool then trapped Harbhajan lbw as Punjab slumped to 225 for 8. J&K had an opening, but Punjab stung back again through another crucial stand. MS Gony, wearing his Kings XI helmet, batted in T20 mode, swatting a huge six over midwicket against Mohammad Mudasir. By the time he was dismissed, he had added 63 for the ninth wicket with Mandeep.Mandeep, with only VRV Singh for company, made room against Mudasir and creamed the length ball to extra cover to register his seventh first-class century. He finally played on to his own stumps against Rasool, giving the bowler his sixth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, and setting the scene for an intriguing fourth day.

Placar inaugurado no Centro-Oeste.

ASSUSTOU

Marsh and Smith put Australia on top

Shaun Marsh and Steven Smith demoralised the South Africans and in particular Graeme Smith, who had sent Australia in after vacillating over the decision in the lead-up to the toss

The Report by Brydon Coverdale12-Feb-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details0:00

Kimber: Shaun Marsh’s nuggety innings punished Graeme Smith’s error at the toss

As hunches go, picking Shaun Marsh for this tour was a biggie. He had averaged 25 in first-class cricket since being axed from the Test team in early 2012. He was the Sheffield Shield’s 34th highest run scorer this season. But whatever Australia’s selectors saw in Marsh that no one else did, whatever encouraged them to pencil him in at No.4 against the world’s best team, whatever inkling they had, it paid off on the first day of the series in South Africa.By the close of play, Marsh and Steven Smith had demoralised the South Africans and in particular Graeme Smith, who had sent Australia in after vacillating over the decision in the lead-up to the toss. His bowlers troubled Australia in the opening session and took three wickets before lunch but their threat level diminished as the ball grew older and they managed only one wicket for the rest of the day, far from a passable outcome. From 98 for 4 when Michael Clarke top-edged a hook to fine leg off Dale Steyn, the Australians had moved on to 297 for 4 at stumps, with Marsh unbeaten on 122 and Smith on 91, eyeing off a possible third Test century from four matches. Already the top order had bettered their first-innings efforts in all five home Ashes Tests, for 257 was their highest score at five down in those games. Their frequent saviour Brad Haddin will not know what to do with himself in Centurion. The Marsh-Smith partnership was 199 at stumps and the runs had flowed more and more rapidly as the day wore on. The second new ball only served to bring more boundaries for the two well-set batsmen, and the frustration showed on the faces of the South Africans as the shadows grew longer, not that they had created vast numbers of chances.Marsh’s only genuine life came on 12 when he cut Morne Morkel hard and Hashim Amla at gully put down a difficult chance. There were other nervy moments, including a miscue just over the head of a jumping Robin Peterson at cover on 57, a hook that narrowly eluded a diving Morkel at fine leg on 77, and a run-out chance on 83, but Marsh survived. He not only survived, he thrived. Strong when driving down the ground and through the off side, he worked plenty of singles through leg when the bowling was too straight. Most of his strokes were along the ground and he brought up his second Test hundred from his 174th delivery with a tickle to fine leg off the part-time offspin of JP Duminy, celebrating like a man who had been given a second chance at life, which in cricketing terms he was. However valid the arguments were against Marsh’s inclusion, they had become irrelevant. And if Shane Watson returns from his calf injury for the second Test, it will not be Marsh who makes way. At least, not unless his own calf problem, which appeared to hamper his running at times during his century, acts up. Not that he was the only man Australia had to thank for their solid scoreline at the close of play. Smith showed again why he now tops the list of Australia’s Test batting averages over the past year.Shaun Marsh repaid the faith of Australia’s selectors•Getty Images

As he did in his mature Ashes hundred at the WACA, Smith left the ball with fine judgment and waited for the bad balls to score from. He drove through cover with power when the bowlers overpitched and was also strong down the ground, bringing up his half-century from his 118th delivery with a punchy cover-drive for four off Ryan McLaren. Earlier, McLaren had bowled well on the greenish-tinged pitch but like his team-mates, the threat was blunted after lunch.Graeme Smith must have gone to that first break pleased with his decision to send Australia in, for his men had them at 83 for 3. His bowlers had just enough movement and, in the case of Morkel, disconcerting bounce. An over-confident David Warner, who had struck two boundaries in the first over of the game, played on for 12 when he tried to cut a Steyn ball that was both too straight and too full, and Australia were 15 for 1.That became 24 for 2 when Morkel came on. His first ball was a bouncer that struck Chris Rogers on the arm and the follow-up delivery was another short one that Rogers, on 4, could only fend to short leg for Duminy to take a sharp catch. The composure shown by Alex Doolan in his first Test was encouraging for the Australians; he punched a cover drive for four off Vernon Philander and cut another hard off Steyn.Generally, Doolan looked up to the task of Test cricket, but converting his classy starts has always been his issue at domestic level and on 27 he pulled McLaren straight to Robin Peterson at midwicket. Clarke, who shifted himself down to No.5 to accommodate Doolan and Marsh, reached 23 before he fell to a clear bouncer plan from Steyn, his top edge finding Philander running around at fine leg.At 98 for 4 shortly after lunch, it looked like smooth sailing for South Africa. But Steyn, battling a stomach bug, picked up no more wickets, Philander battled to find the swing and seam he had with the new ball, Morkel was handled more easily by Marsh and Smith, McLaren’s threat diminished and Peterson was treated like a part-timer, literally, for he and Duminy each finished the day with 0 for 34 from 10 overs.Graeme Smith must have walked off at stumps regretting the advantage he had given Australia with his decision at the toss. It will be up to him and his fellow batsmen over the next few days to ensure it does not cost South Africa the match.

Slow starters fight to stay afloat

ESPNcricinfo previews the match between Australia and West Indies in Mirpur

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale27-Mar-20141:36

Cullinan: Concerns over Australia’s bowling

Match factsMarch 28, 2014, MirpurStart time 1530 (0930GMT)Big Picture It’s the defending champions versus the pre-tournament favourites and neither team has so far set the World T20 alight. West Indies began with a defeat at the hands of India, followed by an easy win over Bangladesh, but in a challenging group it is teams like Australia and Pakistan they will need to beat to progress. Australia started with a loss to Pakistan in a frenetic match that highlighted their problems with spin – both facing it and bowling it. That was always going to be their weakness in these conditions and West Indies will certainly have noted that Glenn Maxwell was the only batsman who really found an effective method against Pakistan’s slow bowlers. To that end, Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree will be key men for West Indies as they aim to restrict Australia. In the two most recent T20s between these teams, spin was an important weapon in setting West Indies on the path to victories. In the semi-final of the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka, Narine took 2 for 17 and Badree picked up 2 for 27 as Australia struggled in a 200-plus chase. And last season at the Gabba, Narine’s 2 for 19 again prevented Australia getting a move on in pursuit of 192 for victory. But the theme in both of those games was runs on the board – the West Indies spinners need backup from their batsmen, which did not come against India.Samuel Badree’s has been in wicket-taking form at the World T20•AFP

Only two teams from this group will advance to the semi-finals and India already have two wins and are yet to play Bangladesh, putting them in a very strong position. The likelihood is that West Indies, Australia and Pakistan will be vying for the second semi-final spot from this group. An Australian victory here would keep those three teams locked together on points. An Australian loss would leave them on the brink of exit.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Australia LWWWW
West Indies WLLWWWatch out for Allrounder James Faulkner appears set to make his return from a knee injury that has kept him out of action since the end of the one-day series against England in January. Faulkner will add balance and aggression to this Australian outfit and West Indies have seen first-hand that he does not back down on the field. He was fined for giving Chris Gayle a send-off in an ODI in Canberra in 2012-13 and this week when asked about West Indies, he said: “I don’t particularly like them”. After a comment like that, the feeling might be mutual. The No.2-ranked T20 international bowler in the world – behind his team-mate Narine – Samuel Badree is fresh from a four-wicket haul against Bangladesh and his legspin will again be important on the slowish surface in Mirpur. Badree has played the Australians only once in an international and on that occasion he took the new ball and got rid of both openers, David Warner and Shane Watson.Team news Doug Bollinger might be the man to make way for Faulkner, given the abundance of left-armers in the side. Cameron White is the only backup batsman in the group but it is difficult to see how he would squeeze in.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Brad Hodge, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 11 Brad Hogg. After their win over Bangladesh, West Indies may be inclined to go in with an unchanged line-up, however, there are some doubts on Gayle’s fitness. Gayle appeared to have been hampered by a sore ankle against Bangladesh, but team management has been unwilling to reveal the exact nature of the injury. Darren Sammy downplayed its severity, however, suggesting Gayle will play.West Indies (possible) 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Darren Sammy (capt), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Samuel Badree, 11 Krishmar Santokie.ConditionsSpin has proven a key weapon so far at this venue and that is likely to be the same again, with not much pace expected in the wicket.Stats and Trivia Australia and West Indies have met 10 times for five wins each Darren Sammy will become the first West Indies player to reach the milestone of 50 Twenty20 international appearancesQuotes “They have a powerful batting line-up on paper… It’s going to be about keeping calm under pressure. They’re going to come hard at us.”
“A lot of guys have played Narine in the Big Bash and in the IPL. While having faced him quite a bit we are going to have our plans. He is still a quality bowler. He spins it both ways. Anyone who does that is going to present a challenge.”
