Jadeja, McCullum lift Super Kings to No.1

O’Brien: RR top order should have contributed more

Chennai Super Kings almost confirmed themselves in the playoffs with a comfortable 12-run win against Rajasthan Royals that took them to the top of the table with 16 points. They still have two games at hand. Royals, on the other hand, were now placed precariously, needing a win from their last league game against Kolkata Knight Riders to qualify. The positions the teams were in the table had an air of “I told you so”, so had the pattern the game followed after Super Kings decided to bat on a sluggish pitch. The batsmen generally struggled for timing but Brendon McCullum, the only batsman to make a half-century in the match, braved the sapping heat to set up Super Kings for another sub-160 total. Then Ravindra Jadeja picked a bagful of wickets after a 15-day barren spell to derail Royals’ chase. It hasn’t been a high-scoring season in Chennai this year. The home team batted first in each game, but only twice were able to go past 160. Still, such has been their control on this ground that except Mumbai Indians, no one else was able to breach the target. After the early losses of Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina, McCullum played an innings slightly out of character: it did not feature all-out aggression. He would hit a six, a boundary, then go back to nurdle the ball in the gaps. And such was the necessity, too, as the ball did not come onto the bat. That he found success was not surprising, his fast hands allowing him to generate pace on the ball.McCullum reached his half-century, his third 50-plus score this season, in 44 balls despite five fours and two sixes. The run-rate at that stage – the 13th over – hovered just above six an over. Despite fatigue setting in, he ensured Super Kings accelerated by picking up 31 more runs in the next 17 balls. He also had an able ally in Faf du Plessis with whom he added 101 runs for the third wicket. By the time he was dismissed, in the 18th over, the score had swelled to 132. MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo then pushed it to 157 with late hitting.Royals knew they needed runs early on before the onset of spin. Ajinkya Rahane and Shane Watson started well, but once Mohit Sharma had Rahane top edge a pull, Royals’ innings lost steam. Jadeja, then, ran through the middle order in a spell that read 4-0-11-4, the highlight being the gravity-defying catch by Bravo at the long-on boundary.Royals were left needing 65 to win from the last five overs. There were a few flashes of aggression from Sanju Samson, but the team slowly caved in to fall well short. With only one left-hander in the Royals XI, that too at No. 10, Dhoni did not even feel the need to use R Ashwin at all. It was only the second time in Ashwin’s 116-match career with Super Kings that he did not bowl a single ball, the first instance being his debut game in 2009.The loss was Royals’ first under Steven Smith’s captaincy this year.

Pakistan seek swing in ODI form

Pakistan will seek nothing less than a 3-0 series win if they are to avoid dropping ODI ranking points

The Preview by Firdose Moonda25-May-2015Match factsTuesday, May 26, 2015
Start time 1600 local (1100GMT)Big pictureNeither Pakistan nor Zimbabwe had the World Cup they would have wanted but for one of them, the aftermath was worse. Pakistan went from a tournament in which their batsmen consistently let their potent pacers down, to a series where the same happened, except that the attack had also lost some of its zip.Their 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh has left them ninth in the ODI rankings – which would mean, as things stand, they would miss out on the the 2017 Champions Trophy – and anything other than a 3-0 win over Zimbabwe will see them drop points. Although they have the safety of knowing that even if that happens, they won’t slide any further down the rankings because Ireland are far behind on just 50 points, it will widen the gap between them, on 87 points, and West Indies and Bangladesh, who are on 88 points each, which means there is a lot more on this for Pakistan. As is the case for Zimbabwe, who are a distant 11th on the rankings on 45 points and who are aiming to become a top-eight team in time to automatically qualify for the 2019 World Cup. The only way to do that will be for Zimbabwe to start winning. Admirable as their competitive efforts have been since Dav Whatmore took over – and their improvement has been apparent as they stay in games for longer and take them deeper – it has not translated into success yet. If that does not change soon, Zimbabwe’s World Cup aftermath could go the same way as Pakistan’s.Form guidePakistan LLLLW (last five matches, most recent first)
Zimbabwe LLLLWIn the spotlightThe results of his first series as captain did not go as planned but Azhar Ali’s individual performance suggested at least something went right for Pakistan in Bangladesh. Azhar finished as his team’s highest run-scorer and notched up his maiden ODI ton. If he can lead from the front in that way going forward, Pakistan seem in good hands. If Vusi Sibanda thought his relationship with the pull shot was rocky, he must know now is the time to consider divorce. He was out both times in the T20s playing the stroke, although he had made 49 runs before bringing it out the second time, which would have given some confidence ahead of the ODIs. Sibanda must know this is possibly his last chance to establish himself in the team after a patchy past record, which saw him dropped twice in the last year. This tour is the first of a busy winter for Zimbabwe and they will be using it to nail down the group of players they want to work with in future. Sibanda has usually been part of that group but if he wants to stay in it, the runs must come and the pull must go.To pull or not to pull, that’s the question for Vusi Sibanda•Associated Press

Team newsPakistan will field a more experienced outfit than their T20 unit with Junaid Khan returning to the attack and Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq adding strength to the line-up. Haris Sohail will bat at No.4 with legspinner Yasir Shah doing the bulk of the spin-bowling duties. Wahab Riaz was rested for the second T20 after being struck on the hand in the first but should return for the ODIs.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Azhar Ali (capt), 4 Haris Sohail, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Mohammad Sami, 11 Junaid KhanVusi Sibanda should return to the top of the order, as he did in the T20s for a first ODI and may be partnered by Chamu Chibhabha with Hamilton Masakadza at No.3. Although Charles Coventry is only part of Zimbabwe’s long-term T20 plans, he may be used at No.4, unless Zimbabwe are brave enough to give their debutant Roy Kaia a run. The pace pack could see Chris Mpofu bowl alongside Tinashe Panyangara and Brian Vitori.Zimbabwe: (probable) 1 Chamu Chibhabha (wk), 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Charles Coventry/Roy Kaia, 5 Craig Ervine, 6 Elton Chigumbira (capt), 7 Sean Williams, 8 Sikandar Raza, 9 Tinashe Panyangara, 10 Tawana Mupariwa/Chris Mpofu, 11 Brian VitoriPitch and conditionsThe condition of a surface that will be played on five times in the space of ten days will be less of a concern than the fact that the avoidance of searing temperatures is over. While the T20s started once the sun had gone down at 7pm, the ODIs will kick off three hours earlier, at 4pm, when temperatures are still likely to be in the 40s so bowling first will be a challenge. Add to that that the surface has promised nothing but runs so far, and it could tune out to be a tough outing for fielding sides.Stats and trivia Zimbabwe have never won an ODI series against Pakistan and have only beaten them three times in 48 meetings, the most recent in 2013. Wahab Riaz is Pakistan’s leading bowler this year, with 20 wickets from 10 matches. He is 14 scalps behind the leader, Mitchell Starc, but may want to use this series to gain some ground. Quotes”Looking at the first two games I think our bowling let us down and also the fielding where we gave away many chances and we didn’t take three or four catches and that makes a big difference at the end of the day.”

Dhawan's comeback 150 lights up rainy day

Shikhar Dhawan scored a rapid 150 on Test comeback, and was complemented by M Vijay’s sedate 89, as India raced to 239 for 0 on a rain-hit day

The Report by Sidharth Monga10-Jun-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
2:21

‘Big boost for Dhawan on comeback’

He could have been carrying drinks had KL Rahul not fallen ill or if India had taken the expected option of opening with Cheteshwar Pujara once they decided to play five bowlers. He could have been out for 1 on a quicker pitch, he should have been snapped for 73, but Shikhar Dhawan was destined to score a third Test century, against an insipid attack missing both strategy and execution. The ad campaign of “they are not kids anymore” will draw jokes about Bangladesh’s wicketless performance on the first day, but no Test century can be written off; and Dhawan’s came at a crucial juncture in his career, in a comeback Test, and its pace helped India make up time in a Test played on a slow pitch and during the monsoon. Only 56 overs were possible, but Dhawan’s unbeaten 150 off 158 meant India got a score that teams at times take on a full day’s play. The established opener, M Vijay, put his head down, determined to not throw away his wicket against innocuous bowling, complementing Dhawan with a more sedate 89 off 178.India’s intent will take all the headlines: they picked five bowlers, including three quickest bowlers in their squad, and sat out the least aggressive of their batting contenders, Pujara. The story of the day, though, will be Bangladesh’s rather strange selection and bowling plans thereafter. Not only did they select Mohammad Shahid to play his third Test, they selected him as the only specialist quick ahead of the promising duo of Rubel Hossain and Taskin Ahmed on an overcast day and with cloud cover expected throughout the Test. It seemed they had put all their eggs in the toss basket packing their side with batting and spin, and losing out on helpful conditions with the new ball on the first morning. It all went wrong for them from the moment Kohli won the toss.India’s luck didn’t end at the toss. There was no bounce in the pitch, which should have got them Vijay’s wicket in the second over and which also cost them Dhawan’s scalp in the third. Soumya Sarkar, already developing a cult following as the little Ganguly with his classy off-side shots and military medium bowling, thought he had Vijay trapped right in front with a short-of-a-length delivery, but seemingly umpire Kumar Dharmasena thought it would have sailed over the stumps. On a pitch with good bounce it would well have, but this was a slow and low track, evident in how Dhawan’s regulation edge off the only fast bowler fell short of slip in the next over. India could well have been 1 for 2 then, but Bangladesh gave up the ghost after that. The consequence was a mammoth opening stand, which made this combination the fifth-most prolific among Indian openers, and the only one other than Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to have posted two double-century stands. There was a sense of ease with which they scored the runs: Dhawan was not even at his watchful best, but the leading edges fell safe, the inside edges avoided the stumps, and the gorgeous drives flowed. The standout quality of the innings was his charges against spin, not to blast the ball, but to push it along the ground and into the gaps, letting the quick outfield do the rest. The first burst, though, didn’t need much of that exquisite footwork. After bowling two maidens Shahid lost all intensity and provided loose balls to Dhawan to help him get off to a flying start. However, it was the lack of discipline from the spinners that will disappoint Bangladesh. In his first over, the sixth of the innings, Shuvagata Hom provided Dhawan with a short ball and a half-volley, which were both sent away for fours. Shahid then conceded three boundaries to horizontal shots in one over, on such a slow track and with a cloud cover overhead. From 1 off 10 Dhawan had now raced to 34 off 28. Despite all the strides made by Bangladesh of late, the harsh and the unfortunate truth is Dhawan is likely to be tested more in domestic first-class cricket than during this spell of play. The worrying part for Bangladesh will be that the ball turned. Just that their bowlers didn’t put enough of them in areas that test batsmen. They didn’t concede an extra, but freebies they kept providing. After the rain interruption, which arrived moments after Dhawan had been dropped by Hom at short straight midwicket, Shahid – primarily an inswing bowler – bowled with a 7-2 off-side field providing easy runs. Spinners kept bowling flat, and the best of the lot, Shakib Al Hasan, bowled only six in the first 45. If the legspinner Jubair Hossain managed to draw the odd false stroke with his wrong’uns – including a Dhawan edge when he was 98 – his economy rate of 5.85 was testament to the number of long hops and full tosses thrown in besides.Given the conditions and the quality of the bowling, this partnership won’t answer India’s long-term problems with opening the innings outside of Asia, but they did what was required, at a healthy pace, to give India a chance to push for the win.

Clarke promises 'tough cricket' to win Ashes

Michael Clarke underlined his side must stick to the methods that have reaped benefits in the past, which includes an aggressive, occasionally unsociable manner on the field

Daniel Brettig in Cardiff07-Jul-2015New England, old Australia. Michael Clarke has underlined the fact that in the face of an evolving opponent, his touring side must stick to the methods that have reaped significant success over the past 18 months – and that includes an aggressive, occasionally unsociable manner on the field. Both sides have been told at the pre-series meeting with match officials that the ICC will not tolerate too much in the way of verbal stoushes, something David Warner appears to have taken note of. But Clarke said he did not want to see his side shrink from the outwardly bold and brash attitude they have combined with a high level of skill and plenty of determination in series wins over England, South Africa and India, plus a World Cup victory at home.Nor does he mind if the English press – or even some Australian outlets – paint his men as the latest incarnation of the “ugly Aussies” panned in broadsheets and tabloids alike at times during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. On the contrary, he thinks such talk will only help add to the edge in the air when the Investec Ashes series begins.”I know we play a tough brand of cricket but we’re also respectful towards the players we play against, and to the game of cricket,”Clarke said. “A lot of it sells newspapers and it builds the series as well, so I’m more than happy for there to be a lot of talk about it.It’s entertaining for the people who are going to be at home watching or come to the ground to watch.”I think everyone knows where the line is. In the last Ashes series if anyone overstepped it, it was me so I have to make sure I set my standard and have the discipline to stay there as well, which I know I will. You definitely need to respect the laws of the game, you can play hard but play fair. You don’t have to sledge to play tough cricket. It’s as much about body language and intent and attitude as it is about verbal stuff that comes out of your mouth.”I’ve learned from what’s happened in the past, and the boys know how we play our best cricket. This Australian team, and any Australian team I’ve been part of, has always played tough cricket on the field but also understood and respected there’s a line there. As long as the boys respect that I’ll be happy.”Having played under bright sunshine in Canterbury and Chelmsford, Clarke’s men were confronted by a pea soup of a day in Cardiff two days out from the first Test, and found the ball swinging and seaming lavishly in the nets. For now there is plenty of grass on the match strip, leaving the selectors Darren Lehmann and Rod Marsh to ponder their options. Batting wise the experience of Clarke, Chris Rogers, Adam Voges and Shane Watson in English conditions will be critical, and among the bowlers Peter Siddle is now under some consideration.”It’s got a lot of grass on it. It’s surprising how much grass is on it,” Clarke said. “So I think if it stays that way it’s going to be interesting to see how it plays. I think it’ll come down to what England are after. If they’re worried about spin bowling, they’ll leave more grass on it. If they’re worried about pace, it’ll have a bit more moisture in it.”From what I’m see today and what the groundsman’s telling me, I think we’re going to see some sideways movement from the fast bowlers.”On his fourth Ashes tour, Clarke said he had learned to look as much at the skies as the pitch when deciding how to approach an English Test match. “A lot of grounds around the world you look at the pitch before deciding whether you’re going to bat or bowl first. In the UK you look above more than at the wicket,” he said. “When it’s overcast you see a lot more movement around the country and when the sun’s out it can be a really nice place to bat.”The other thing is in conditions like that, once you get in as batsman you have to go on and make a big score. You’re never out of the game as a bowler, there’s always something there – whether it’s the slope at Lord’s or you get some overhead conditions, or you take the second new ball. There’s always an opportunity with the Duke ball.”So as a batter you need to know that. In Australia when you feel like you’re batting well and get to 40 and 50, things become a little bit easier. Sometimes here it’s not the case, you’ve got to work your backside off for your whole innings.”There is not a member of Clarke’s team unaware of the fact Australia have not won the Ashes in England since 2001, and without Ryan Harris that task has been made harder. Nevertheless, they have plenty of experience, and a method they trust. Now all they need is Wednesday to arrive.
