Nosso trabalho, nossa equipe…

Garcia’s move from Espanyol to city rivals Barcelona has not sat well with some fans of Los Pericos. While close friends at his former club have quietly supported his decision, some others at Espanyol have reacted harshly, per SPORT. The 24-year-old skipped a close friend’s birthday last week and has largely stayed home during his holiday to avoid further incidents.

Despite the heat, Garcia has shown maturity in handling the situation, focusing on his professional future. His early days at Barcelona may be turbulent, but the club hopes he can soon settle in and shift the attention to his performances on the pitch.

Rangers in negotiations to sell transformed Ibrox player for less than £3m

A club are believed to have entered negotiations with Rangers over a permanent deal to sign an Ibrox player who has recently been transformed.

Rangers manager and takeover latest

The Gers have had an eventful start to 2025, to say the least. A shock Scottish Cup exit to Queen’s Park was the beginning of the end for Philippe Clement, who was sacked in February after 16 months in charge.

The club decided to bring in former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson on an interim basis until the end of the season, and the Scot guided Rangers to an impressive 3-1 win in Turkey over Fenerbahce last week.

A place in the Europa League quarter-finals is firmly in Rangers’ grasp as a result, and there is also the ongoing process of a takeover involving a group of US investors.

The 49ers Enterprises have agreed a deal in principle to take charge in Glasgow, with Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh leading the bid.

They are hoping a deal will be completed ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and one of their first tasks will be to bring in a new permanent manager.

Key figure in Rangers takeover impressed by young coach who wants Ibrox job

Would he be the perfect choice for the Gers?

ByHenry Jackson Mar 10, 2025

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a return to Ibrox, whereas Rafa Benitez is thought to be the preferred target for the 49ers. Russell Martin has also responded to rumours linking him with the Rangers job on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, and whoever comes in ay not be able to work with one specific player going off a recent exit update.

Rangers in talks to sell Cifuentes for less than £3m

Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes is currently on loan at Aris Thessaloniki, who have the option to buy the Ecuadorian in the summer for around £3m.

The 26-year-old has made 25 appearances in all competitions over in Greece in 2024/25, but there were rumours he could have returned in January after some early poor performances and turning up late for training towards the end of 2024.

However, as per reports relayed by Herald Scotland, Cifuentes has been transformed under manager Apostolos Mantzios and Aris Thessaloniki want to make his loan move permanent over the coming months.

There is a catch, though, with the club entering negotiations with Rangers to lower the £3m figure. The Scottish giants signed Cifuentes from Los Angeles FC for around £1.2m, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Gers do lower the £3m fee.

Foakes unfazed amid talk of battle for England gloves with Bairstow

Surrey keeper “happy with the way things have gone” under Stokes-McCullum regime

Ben Foakes has been a consistent performer under Ben Stokes•AFP/Getty Images

Of the thoughts pre-occupying Ben Foakes ahead of the 2023 season, his status as England’s No. 1 wicketkeeper is not one of them. The news Jonny Bairstow has requested the keeping gloves upon his return to action for Yorkshire in a bid to boost him claims on a Test place after breaking his leg last September was a shot across the bows for Foakes. The Surrey wicketkeeper has been the go-to gloveman under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, assuming the role for nine of the 12 matches in the new era. Now, with a one-off Test against Ireland and the summer headliner of an Ashes on the horizon, his place is under threat.Foakes drew special praise from head coach McCullum at the end of the New Zealand tour, stating the 30-year-old’s performances to date were “excellent, not just as a wicketkeeper, which is world-class”. The development of his batting was singled out, with some vital innings across the last nine months. But after Bairstow’s 2022, which featured six centuries and 1061 runs at an average of 66.31 before his year came to an abrupt halt, along with the blockbuster returns of his middle-order replacement, Harry Brook, Foakes is aware he has an all-too-familiar fight on his hands to retain his spot. McCullum has said he would not attempt to “crowbar” Bairstow in, but that would not be the case if the Yorkshireman kept – something he has done in 49 of his 89 Test caps so far.Related

Bairstow requests wicketkeeper role at Yorkshire to aid Ashes bid

And given Foakes was left out of the second Test against Pakistan back in December, after Ollie Pope deputised as keeper when Foakes was ruled out of the first through illness, it is evidently a decision England are willing to make.It was only really on the tour of the West Indies last year, off the back of England’s 4-0 defeat in the 2021-22 Ashes, that Foakes was given a clear run as Test keeper. His debut in Sri Lanka in 2018 came about after Bairstow damaged ankle ligaments playing football in the warm-ups during the ODI series that preceded the three-match Test series. Foakes marked the occasion with a hundred in his first innings, but soon fell back down the pecking order, behind Bairstow and Jos Buttler. To many, Foakes’ status as England’s first-choice gloveman has been long overdue.”I’m happy with the way things have gone for me,” Foakes said at Surrey’s media day on Monday. “So it is a bit unique to be asked about that [his place]. But I can’t remember a time when I haven’t been asked that stuff to be honest with you, since I started playing.”It is just something I obviously put up with but it is only really times like this where you hear it. Within the camp there is no chat about any selections, whoever it might be at any stage, so it is more just stuff like this.”Blocking out the noise is helped by an average of 38.90 under Stokes. There have been four standout scores above 50, including a second Test century (and first at home) scored during a vital stand with his captain in the series-squaring victory in the second Test against South Africa at Old Trafford. Time away from the field in the four series he has played during that time has also helped him reinforce his ability to cut out negative distractions.”Obviously playing county cricket you don’t get any [media scrutiny] and then all of a sudden it ramps up quite significantly, and that can be a difficult thing. But I’ve found by doing things like staying off social media, not checking Cricinfo during series and things like that just allows me to play the game of cricket again and just be more focused on whatever my job is that day.”I think it’s just a distraction you don’t need, it can just muddle your thinking, if you think ‘this might happen, so I’ve got to do this or I’ve got to do extra’. It takes you away from what you do well and just makes your job more difficult. I think experience over the years for me has showed me that. So nowadays, I just ignore it all.”Nevertheless, Foakes admitted his last outing with England, his 20th cap, still sticks in a craw. He came within eight runs of seeing his side to victory in the second Test against New Zealand at Wellington back in February. Having arrived at the crease with England 201 for 6 chasing a target of 258 on day five, he watched Joe Root fall for 95 one run later before assuming the lead role to marshal the tail through what remained.Foakes walks off after being dismissed on the final day at Basin Reserve•Getty Images

On 35, a pull off Tim Southee in search of his fifth boundary ended up nestling into the hands of Neil Wagner at fine leg, which made it 251 for 9. Wagner went on to dismiss No. 11 James Anderson to give the Blackcaps a famous one-run victory to square the series. While both sides revelled in the part they played got such a thrilling climax, Foakes was visibly distraught at the conclusion. Though he has shaken off that disappointment, it reiterated a sense he needs to expand his repertoire with the bat.”That night, I was gutted,” Foakes said. “I think that’s the area of the game I need to work on. I play a different role at Surrey so that’s the area I’ve been working on the most. I was really happy with the way I stuck to my processes and did what I wanted to do, but obviously gutted to fall just short and get out with seven to go and not quite get over the line.”I think one thing I’ve taken from playing for England is for me, it’s more about how many times can I impact the game. Batting at seven and the style we play you might not often get too long to bat in certain situations. So it’s about how can I impact, how many games can I contribute to in a positive way.”The crux of Foakes’ conflict is his position in the England line-up. Having developed as a top-six batter on the domestic circuit for Essex and Surrey, he is still learning on the job at No. 7 for the national team. The need to switch between batting normally with the top order or aggressively with the lower order is part of the job description. The former comes naturally, but the latter still needs work in Foakes’ opinion.”The challenge I find and the difference is when I go in and someone gets out early and you’re batting with the tail trying to ramp it up and play a slightly different style from say your 10th ball. I think that is the challenge and something you have to train for. Whereas my training over the last few years trying to get into the England team is trying to bat in nets, develop a technique that’s solid and all the old-school stuff. Whereas I think there are different elements to batting at seven you require so they’re the things I’ve tried to work on.”It is worth stating at no point have England voiced any public or private displeasure at how Foakes has operated so far. Those within the camp have been impressed with how he has approached an unfamiliar role, the ownership taken over his game and the manner in which he has carried himself on the field, emerging as a key sounding board for Stokes, whether suggesting shifts in the field or taking it upon himself to stand up to the stumps against the seamers. All told, he has done everything expected of him – and done it well. Regardless of the situation with Bairstow, such self-prescribed improvement will only be of benefit to England and, more importantly, Foakes himself.

Holder's 81* keeps West Indies afloat on 13-wicket day

South Africa have a generous lead of 73 after dismissing West Indies for 251 inside 80 overs on a 13-wicket day at the Wanderers. Jason Holder’s half-century – the highest score for a West Indian batting at No.8 or lower in South Africa – and his 58-run final-wicket stand with Gudakesh Motie helped West Indies concede only almost half the deficit they did at SuperSport Park last week and demonstrated the application the rest of the line-up lacked.Holder, who was batting with the assurance of a player set for a fourth Test century, kept West Indies competitive after twin collapses. They slipped to 51 for 4 in the morning, recovered thanks to a 52-run fifth-wicket stand between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase and then lost four for 59 in the middle order to much all the good work of their seamers in the first 16 minutes of play.Alzarri Joseph struck twice and Mayers once as West Indies dismissed South Africa’s last three batters in 18 balls, with South Africa adding only nine runs to their overnight score of 311. All told, South Africa lost their last eight wickets for 72 runs. The form of their middle order will also give West Indies reason to believe they remain in the game.Related

On a pitch with extra bounce on one end and turn on the other, batting was always going to be tricky but South Africa also showed up sharply in the field to make it even more difficult. After only scoring one run in their first 19 balls, West Indies were anxious to rotate strike so when Kraigg Braithwaite tapped Mulder into the covers, he set off a single. But he didn’t bank on Temba Bavuma’s quick reflexes. South Africa’s captain swooped in from mid-off, pulled off a one-hand pick-up-and-release and hit the stumps at the striker’s end to find Tagenarine Chanderpaul short of his ground. From the other end, Kagiso Rabada extracted extra bounce with a short-of-a-length beauty that found Braithwaite’s outside edge. Elgar had to take the catch low down at first slip and got his hands underneath it to leave West Indies 22 for 2. Gerald Coetzee took over from Rabada and got the second ball of his second over to straighten on Jermaine Blackwood, who was squared up and nicked off.Gerald Coetzee picked up three wickets on the second day•Associated Press

Chase and Reifer put on 23 runs in 25 balls – thanks largely to big gaps in the field as Bavuma sought to crowd the batters against the spinners – before Coetzee struck again. Reifer tried to flick Coetzee past Tony de Zorzi at short leg but inside-edged onto his pad and de Zorzi took a good catch. After stabilising the innings before lunch, Chase and Mayers batted with a good blend of caution and aggression for most of the first 10 overs after the break. They capitalised on anything overpitched and turned the strike over sedately but sensibly to stage a small recovery. Their partnership had grown to 52 runs before Chase tried to take Mulder on and failed. He advanced on a full delivery and inside-edged onto his pads before the ball rolled back onto his stumps. A distraught Chase sank to his knees, perhaps knowing he had opened the door into the lower order, with West Indies still 217 runs behind.Joshua da Silva’s arrival saw the re-introduction of Rabada for the first time since his opening spell but it was Mayers whose patience he tested, particularly after drinks. After spending 76 balls to score 27 runs, Mayers wanted to get a move on and threw his bat at any width Rabada offered, even as he was beaten. After one over in which he looked like he could be dismissed off every ball, Mayers wafted at one too many and edged to Elgar at first slip. When he was dismissed, West Indies were still five runs adrift of the follow-on.Jason Holder’s first runs, a gorgeous straight drive, ensured South Africa would have to bat again and he soon outscored da Silva, who broke the shackles post tea. He was on 16 off 56 balls when he cut Keshav Maharaj for fours in successive overs and South Africa seemed to be losing their shape slightly. Simon Harmer pulled it back when he bowled da Silva through the bat-pad gap to open up the tail. Maharaj had Alzarri Joseph caught at silly point.Holder and Kemar Roach put on 31 runs in 40 balls and both of them took on Maharaj. Roach’s fun ended when Coetzee was brought back and he tried to cut but edged to Elgar at first slip.Holder went on to bring up his fifty off 79 balls with an authoritative sweep that carried for six. With Gudakesh Motie a more than capable No.11, Holder continued to play his shots and was especially profitable with the slog against the spinners. Their partnership reached 50 runs off 59 balls as West Indies continued to frustrate a South African attack that seemed to be waiting for the second new ball. They did not get there because, with three deliveries to go, Motie holed out to short cover off Simon Harmer, leaving South Africa with three overs to face to close out the day, which Markram and Elgar managed without too many troubles.

He’s one of the best in the league: Spurs eyeing "insane" upgrade on Ange

In a season full of downs, the last week has been particularly brutal for Tottenham Hotspur.

With their Premier League campaign going about as badly as it possibly could, the Lilywhites knew that the cup competitions were their best bet for any sort of success this year.

However, within the last seven days, the North Londoners have been booted out of the League Cup at the hands of Liverpool and the FA Cup courtesy of Aston Villa, which has made Ange Postecoglou’s already difficult position appear even more untenable.

TottenhamHotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reacts after the match

The Australian has been under increasing pressure over the last few months, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could have already identified the man they want to replace him.

Now, it’s certainly true that, so far this season, Postecoglou has been outrageously unlucky with injuries, so much so that he’s barely been able to field his first-choice backline, and in recent weeks, the same could also be said for the frontline.

Micky van de Ven walks off injured for Tottenham

However, with more losses than wins in the league and now two cup exits in the same week, it would be fair to say that much of the patience people had for him is starting to wear thin, and it now appears as if the club are looking for his replacement.

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, the game against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon will be crucial in deciding the Australian’s future, and should he lead the team to another defeat, the club has identified three potential replacements.

The first two are former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzić and Brentford boss Thomas Frank, but perhaps the most exciting and intriguing option would be Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

The report claims that the Spaniard is ‘liked a lot’ by Tottenham, although given his commitment to the Cherries, getting him to N17 before the end of the season would be incredibly difficult.

However, even if they have to wait until the summer, he’d still be worth it.

Why Iraola would be a great appointment

While there are a number of reasons why Iraola would be an excellent appointment for Spurs to make in the summer, arguably the most important is that he has a track record of surpassing expectations.

For example, his first job in management saw him lead Cypriot side AEK Larnaca into the Europa League group stage for the second time in their history.

Then, in Spain, he masterminded second-tier Mirandes’ surprise run to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, and then, following that, he took Rayo Vallecano from the second tier and left them as a midtable side in La Liga when he took over at Bournemouth.

Since moving to England, the “insane” tactician, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has steered the Cherries from relegation candidates to a team pushing for European football, and one that has already beaten the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Spurs.

Moreover, the Usurbil-born coach has the record to back up respected football analyst Ben Mattinson’s claim that he’s “one of the best in the league”.

Ultimately, it will prove challenging to prise Iraola away from Bournemouth in the summer, but Spurs remain a big club, and if they push hard for him, there is every chance they will get him.

Liverpool now lining up "incredible" Salah successor as big story brews

As concerns over Mohamed Salah’s future continue to increase, Liverpool are reportedly lining up a move to sign a summer replacement in the form of a Bundesliga winger.

Liverpool transfer news

At the end of last season, there were some doubts over Salah’s ability to maintain his incredibly high standards. Just nine months and a fresh look later, however, the Egyptian is looking more complete than ever and is undoubtedly an early favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.

Liverpool, meanwhile, sit top of the Premier League and finished top of the Champions League group phase all whilst booking their place at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final. There remains no question over Salah’s ability. Instead, the power is in his hands, with just a matter of months remaining on his current deal and a new contract yet to be agreed.

To lose arguably the world’s best player this summer would be a true nightmare for the Reds. To lose that same player for free, however, would represent the ultimate failure for all involved at Anfield.

As things stand, the Premier League leaders must prepare for the worst and that has seen ‘one of the summer’s big stories’ come their way. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now lining up a move to sign Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund this summer in an attempt to replace Salah should they need to do so.

Liverpool now seriously interested in forward Everton let leave for £0

The Reds could get one over on their rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 12, 2025

Adeyemi, himself, is reportedly keen to complete a move to the Premier League and has changed his agent in an attempt to make such a move. Whether the Reds come calling in the summer in an attempt to replace Salah remains to be seen though.

"Incredible" Adeyemi doesn't have the output to replace Salah

The reality for Liverpool right now is that a replacement for Salah simply may not exist – or one that is feasible this summer at least. The Egyptian is one of the best goalscorers in the world and one of the best creators. To replace both of those traits, the Reds will arguably need to sign two separate stars, such is the rarity of those two abilities combined at the highest level.

They’re two traits that, in truth, Adeyemi lacks. Whilst the 23-year-old has previously been dubbed “incredible” by former Red Bull Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle, the winger’s output is no match for Salah’s.

In the equivalent of almost seven games, Adeyemi has maintained a respectable goal involvement rate, with five to his name. Compared to Salah, that number is still a world away from the Liverpool star’s incredible numbers.

Not many, if any, have been able to match Salah so far this season and not many, if any, will be able to replace Liverpool’s Egyptian King this summer if he fails to sign a new contract.

T20I rankings: Hasaranga, Kohli, Bhuvneshwar move up after Asia Cup heroics

Wanindu Hasaranga, Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the big movers in the latest ICC T20I rankings for men, following strong performances at the recent Asia Cup in the UAE.

On the bowlers’ table, Hasaranga has moved up three places to sixth after finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker, behind Bhuvneshwar, in Sri Lanka’s sixth Asia Cup triumph. Hasaranga, who was named Player of the Tournament, picked up nine wickets at an economy rate of 7.39.He also made important contributions with the bat, including a 21-ball 36 in the final, which helped Sri Lanka get to a strong total, which they defended successfully. That helped him move up seven spots to No. 4 on the allrounders’ chart – Shakib Al Hasan is at the top there.Kohli, meanwhile, has risen 14 places to slot in at No. 15 on the batters’ table. His rise came on the back of a good Asia Cup, where he scored 276 runs in five innings – at an average of 92.00 and strike rate of 147.59.Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a good time of it at the Asia cup•Associated Press

He also scored his first T20I century during the tournament, an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan, which brought an end to a century drought across formats that had run for 1020 days. Kohli’s tally of runs was only behind Mohammad Rizwan’s 281, and Rizwan held on to the top spot on the batters’ table. Babar Azam, who had a forgettable Asia Cup with the bat, lost his No. 2 spot to Aiden Markram.Bhuvneshwar, the highest wicket-taker at the Asia Cup with 11 strikes, also made notable progress, moving into the top ten among bowlers, jumping from 11th to seventh. In ODIs, Steven Smith, after his starring role in Australia’s 3-0 sweep of New Zealand at home, jumped 13 places to move to tenth among batters. Mitchell Starc, after picking up six wickets in three games, broke into the top ten among bowlers, moving up three places to ninth.Matt Henry also jumped one position to take the eighth spot after picking up five wickets in two games, while Trent Boult continued to lead the list after finishing the series as the top wicket-taker, with ten strikes.

Sky Sports: Liverpool in contact to sign a truly amazing Trent replacement

Everyone at Liverpool anxiously waits for this evening’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Who’d have thought it: if the hosts win they will slash Liverpool’s advantage at the summit to just three points, albeit with a game still in hand.

However, Arne Slot and his crew will be confident that they can bury any giant-killing talk with an assured display, moving one step closer to the title.

However, Liverpool are open to multiple possibilities, and Sky Sports Germany have reported that Liverpool are in direct contact with Joshua Kimmich’s entourage as they consider signing the Bayern Munich star when his contract expires at the end of the season.

However, Bayern are growing in confidence that they will extend the Germany captain’s deal and thus, Liverpool are willing to spend €25m (£21m) for his signing this winter, though it all hinges on Trent Alexander-Arnold.

What Joshua Kimmich would bring to Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and, while those of a Liverpool persuasion hang onto hope that he will extend with his boyhood club, it’s getting increasingly likely that Real Madrid will reportedly make him their latest Galactico.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

Kimmich has principally played as a deep-sitting midfielder over the past few years at the Allianz Arena but has a wealth of experience at right-back, posting 11 goals and 44 assists across 127 appearances in the role.

The 29-year-old would slot seamlessly back into the position, endowed with the technical and creative properties to thrive in the Premier League while also being “one of the best 1v1 defenders in the world,” according to one football content creator. That is something Trent sadly does not specialise in.

That praise, however, is backed up by Kimmich’s impressive 65% success rate in the ground duel for Bayern this season, as per Sofascore. Alexander-Arnold, by contrast, has won 49% of his Premier League ground duels in 2024/25.

Though Liverpool’s right-back is one of the finest playmakers that English football has ever seen, he could be effectively replaced by Kimmich, whose completeness has seen him enjoy an illustrious career in his homeland.

Perhaps now, at the height of his powers, he could actually enhance Liverpool’s defensive ranks through an even more refined version.

BBC analyst Raj Chohan has hailed Kimmich as a “generational player in two different roles,” underscoring the value of Liverpool signing him. Not only could he effectively take Alexander-Arnold’s place, but he could lessen the workload that Ryan Gravenberch carries in the middle of the park.

There sure are a lot of variables at play here, but Liverpool need to get this one done. Should Alexander-Arnold leave, there is no better option to jockey for a place with Conor Bradley and keep Slot’s system firing at full throttle.
