The game started at break-neck speed, with Sweden almost netting in the second minute when Johanna Rytting Kaneryd turned her marker and found Filippa Angeldal in the box before her effort was deflected behind for a corner. That sparked a frenetic passage of end-to-end action that was ultimately halted by a lengthy VAR check when the ball struck Madelen Janogy's hand in her own box. The referee correctly stuck with her original decision of no penalty, as the Swedish forward's heels were clipped by the Danish attacker before the ball struck her arm.
The break took the sting out of the game. While Sweden pushed for an opener, last ditch defending from the Danes meant their opponents could not fashion a clear cut chance on goal. Further delays for refreshments in the sweltering heat added to the disjointed feel. The highlight of the half came from a long range free-kick by Angeldal. Her rasping effort from all of 35 yards was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Maja Ostergaard in the Danish goal.
It was Angeldal who finally got the breakthrough ten minutes into the second half. A neat one-two on the edge of the Danish box with Kosovare Asllani teed the midfielder up to power a low driving effort into the far corner.
The Swedes looked certain to double their lead just a few minutes later when Stina Blackstenius' side-footed volley from a half-cleared corner was heroically hooked clear by Frederikke Thogersen on her own goal-line.
Until the 80th minute, Pernille Harder had cut a slightly dejected figure. Perhaps finally taking matters into her own hands, a thunderous effort from 25 yards out rattled the woodwork. That seemed to jolt her teammates into taking more risks, as Denmark pushed for an equaliser, ultimately to no avail.

THE MVP
Filippa Angeldal was involved in all of Sweden's brightest moments, linking up smartly with Rytting Kaneyrd and ghosting into dangerous positions behind Blackstenius. Took her goal beautifully.
THE BIG LOSER
Manchester City fans will have watched this game with a keen eye, sizing up their new manager. While Andree Jeglertz proved he can set up a defensive unit, he did little to impact the course of the game once Denmark fell behind.

Yamal is enjoying some holiday time after a successful season with Barcelona that brought La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup trophies. The teenager has flown to Brazil where he visited the NBA House in Sao Paulo, during Game Five of the Finals between Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot that Yamal sported a bold No. 10 on the back of his top. Yamal has been tipped to take on the iconic shirt number at Barcelona next season and follow in Lionel Messi's footsteps.

Yamal only managed to stay for 10 minutes before being whisked away while still eating his popcorn, as reported by ESPN. The teenager is now hoping to meet his boyhood idol Neymar while in Brazil. The former Barcelona star is back in his homeland with Santos FC, although he has been sidelined recently after testing positive for Covid. Yamal has long made it clear that Neymar was his favourite player when he was growing up and that he saw the Brazilian, and not Messi, as his main idol.
WHAT YAMAL HAS SAID
Yamal was asked about changing squad numbers last month. He told Cope: “At the moment, Ansu has it. I wear number 19 and I really like it; it’s brought me luck. Is there more pressure to play with number 10? When I go to shoot at goal, I’m not going to think about what number I’m wearing.”

Yamal still has plenty of time left to enjoy himself before Barcelona return to pre-season. The Catalan are due back on July 13 and will then start preparations for the new campaign and a pre-season tour to Asia. Fans are likely to find out then what number Yamal will wear for the 205-26 season.

The future of Manchester United was laid bare this week, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co outlining ambitious plans to build a brand new stadium in the next few years, as part of a total regeneration project in the Old Trafford area.
As revealed on Tuesday, the ownership regime are intent on entering a new permanent home ahead of the 2030/31 campaign, with club CEO Omar Berrada expressing his desire to still have Ruben Amorim in charge for that milestone moment.
Man Utd – new stadium
In the days of identikit stadia, INEOS – and renowned architect Norman Foster – have taken a bold approach with their futuristic design, with The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell notably quipping that it certainly “looks nothing like Old Trafford”.
Mock-up images of the 100k seater arena have brought a mixed sense of excitement and sadness, it must be said, with there now potentially just a matter of years left in a stadium that has been central to so much success and history since it opened back in 1910.
As legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has stated, however, even though “Old Trafford holds so many special memories”, the Red Devils “must be brave + seize this opportunity to build a new home”.
It is a case of out with the old and in with the new, it would seem, with interest already turning to how the playing squad could look in five years’ time.

If recent evidence is anything to go by, teenage superstar, Chido Obi, could be a central part of the side by that stage…
Man Utd's star of the future, Chido Obi
As noted above, the demolition of Old Trafford will not sit well with everyone. This is a place that has birthed so many heroes, witnessed the likes of Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best. Does new always mean better?
That said, what the new stadium will afford is the chance for another crop of stars to make their mark for the Manchester side, with the hope being that young Obi will be a key figure for the club in the coming years.
Plucked from Arsenal last summer, the Danish youth international arrived with a big reputation having remarkably hit 32 goals in the U18 Premier League last term, with data analyst Ben Mattinson rightly lauding him as a “goal machine” amid his prolific form.
That goalscoring prowess has continued in United’s youth ranks, with the 17-year-old already netting 12 times in just nine U18 appearances, a record that includes seven goals from just three FA Youth Cup outings.
Unsurprisingly, the 6 foot 2 marksman has swiftly been parachuted into Amorim’s first team squad amid the woes of his compatriot, Rasmus Hojlund, with the 22-year-old currently on a run of 20 games without a goal in all competitions.
Following the briefest of cameos away to Tottenham Hotspur, Obi has since enjoyed two far more fruitful outings off the bench against both Everton and Fulham, having come particularly close to netting against the Cottagers, only to be denied by Bernd Leno.
While the former Gunners starlet has not been included in the Europa League squad for the current campaign, the remainder of the Premier League season should provide further opportunities to impress, ahead of becoming a more permanent first-team fixture next term.

Should his rampant goalscoring record be replicated at senior level, Obi – who will be 22 in 2030 – could represent a real bargain for the Red Devils. Hopefully, the same will also be true of another teenage sensation, Jack Fletcher.
The Man Utd teen who could shine in the new stadium
It is never easy to predict the rise of an academy talent, with promotion into the first-team never quite running smooth, even if both Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have somewhat bucked that trend after moving from Youth Cup stars to FA Cup heroes in recent years.
As such, it is not certain that the current crop in the youth ranks will be able to force their way into Amorim’s plans, although, in the case of Fletcher, there certainly are high hopes for the 17-year-old.
Son of ex-United star, Darren, the promising midfielder was among the raft of youngsters named on the bench for the defeat of Tottenham Hotspur last month, having caught the eye ever since signing from Manchester City, alongside twin brother Tyler, back in 2023.
Much like Obi, Fletcher has dazzled in the Youth Cup, in particular, with the natural left-footer curling home in stunning fashion on his weaker side against Arsenal at the Emirates a few weeks ago, kickstarting that eventual 3-2 victory.
That eye for a goal was also memorably on show in the EFL Trophy earlier in the campaign, with the England youth international bagging a brace against Barnsley, including an outrageous long-range volley to seal the 3-2 win on the night.
Described as a “marvellous” talent by the Daily Mail’s Nathan Salt, Fletcher would certainly be a worthy inclusion in the senior side moving forward, having showcased a versatility to feature in central midfield, or in an advanced number ten berth.
Options in attack are, it must be said, desperately limited following the loss of Amad to injury, and with Marcus Rashford and Antony shipped out on loan.
Jack Fletcher
Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, is needed in a deeper role, while Christian Eriksen – who is also more of a deep-lying playmaker – is hardly the natural fit for one of those two number ten berths.
As such, it would be no surprise to see Fletcher – who was included in the Europa League ‘A’ list ahead of Obi – handed a senior bow before the season is out.
In The Pipeline
As for the long term, meanwhile, the academy ace – who was dubbed “Cole Palmer in disguise” by teammate Gabriele Biancheri – will hopefully continue his rise at first-team level, with it set to be no surprise if he is one of the stars of the side when life in the new stadium begins in 2030.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Spurs head into Wednesday's Europa League final in 17th in the Premier League after a season in which they have won just 11 of their 37 games. United, in 16th, are one of the few teams Tottenham have done the league double over, and they also beat them in the Carabao Cup. Now, Micky Hazard has claimed that Spurs will have had a better season than second-placed Arsenal if they manage to end their 17-year trophy drought.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Arsenal have only lost four league games this season, the same amount as champions Liverpool, but will be ending another season without a trophy. They were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at the semi-final stage, the Carabao Cup by Newcastle, also at the semi-final stage, and by Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup. As a result, Hazard believes that Spurs finally winning a trophy would top anything the Gunners have done, regardless of their league position.
WHAT MICKY HAZARD SAID
Hazard told Freebets, via The Sun: “Are we a better team than Arsenal? No. Not at this moment in time. If we win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League — have we had a better season than Arsenal? Yes. It’s not a question of doubt in my mind.
“The game is about glory. Would you rather celebrate finishing second and losing the semi-finals, or walking away with a trophy that’ll also get you the Champions League? I know which I’d prefer.”

Manchester United and Leicester City face off in the FA Cup this Friday evening, with the Red Devils’ quest to retain the famous domestic trophy continuing at Old Trafford.

Both clubs have struggled in the Premier League this season, making the FA Cup a welcome distraction and a real chance to save their campaign with silverware.
Man Utd v Leicester City team news Man Utd
The Red Devils were without Jonny Evans, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw last time out, and none of the trio look likely to feature at Old Trafford on Friday. A first appearance for January signing Patrick Dorgu could be one to keep an eye on, though.
United were also handed a new serious injury concern to Lisandro Martinez, who was stretched off against Crystal Palace and looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Leicester City
Long-term absentees at Leicester City are Issahaku Fatawu, Ricardo Pereira, Nathaniel Opoku and Wilfred Ndidi, however, Ndidi has been back in training and van Nistelrooy has confirmed the Nigerian will return to the squad against Man Utd.
When asked about any more injuries, van Nistelrooy said: “There are two or three with light injuries who will be assessed.”
Where to watch Man Utd v Leicester City on TV
For viewers in the UK, the game will be shown live on ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player on Friday 7 February with kick-off at 8pm (GMT).
In the USA, the match will be streamed on ESPN+, and in Canada, live on TV with channel Sportsnet.
Man Utd v Leicester City referee and is there VAR?
Interestingly, the FA has decided this season that VAR will only be introduced from the fifth round of the FA Cup onwards, meaning fans won’t have to worry about it on Friday evening.
The man whose decision will be final is referee Michael Salisbury. He will be assisted by Matthew Wilkes and Steven Meredith, with Thomas Bramall as the fourth official.
Salisbury has taken charge of four games for both clubs, and as can be seen, the Red Devils enjoy having the 40-year-old as the man in the middle with a 100% win ratio.

This will be just the fourth time these two sides have faced off against each other in the FA Cup. The first two meetings were back in 1963 and 1976, both won by the Red Devils.
The last FA Cup clash was in 2021 at the quarter-final stages, where Leicester ran out 3-1 winners thanks to two goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and one from Youri Tielemans. Overall, though, Manchester United have more wins against Leicester throughout history.
Aston Villa are reportedly set to sign one club’s ever-present starter next week, and he’ll fly to England in the coming days to seal his Premier League transfer.

6 players who could join or leave Aston Villa in January
Aston Villa will be aiming to make a few signings and sell some players this January.

Their pursuit of an attacker comes amid PSG’s interest in a winter deal for star striker Jhon Duran, who has impressed under Emery with 12 goals in all competitions despite being behind Ollie Watkins in the pecking order and starting just four Premier League games this season.
Emery says that Aston Villa are “working” on imminent incomings, and while they’ve largely been tipped to bring in forward options, there are also suggestions that a new centre-back is on the cards.
Villa are said to be targeting Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, and it could even happen this window (Football Insider). However, a deal could be difficult to pull off, as the La Liga side are expected to demand a hefty fee to let their star centre-back depart in the middle of the 2024/25 campaign.
Emery reportedly wants two quality players in each position at Villa (Pete O’Rourke), but the club’s finances are set to make recruitment tricky before deadline day.
Aston Villa closing in on Kasimpasa defender Yasin Ozcan
In some good news, Villa are thought to be closing in on their first January signing, according to Turkish newspaper A Spor.
Indeed, it is believed Villa have agreed a €8m (£7m) deal for Kasimpasa defender Yasin Ozcan, who is set to make his way to England in the coming days and put pen to paper on a deal next week.
The centre-back could return to the Süper Lig outfit on loan for the rest of 2024/25, or even fully link up with Emery’s squad for this season, depending on developments.
The 18-year-old, who was called up to the Turkey national squad for the first time in November, featuring on the bench against Montenegro, has been a pivotal mainstay for Kasimpasa this season.
Ozcan boasts 17 league starts, and goalkeeper Andreas Gianniotis is the only Kasimpasa player who’s played more Turkish top-flight minutes than the teenager.
Taking his age into account, this is quite impressive, and it appears Villa may be about to secure themselves a real gem.
Sheffield United look to be the main big spenders in the Championship this January transfer window, with a deal edging ever closer for in-demand attacker Tom Cannon to join for around £10m.
On top of that, one confirmed transfer is already through the door in Ben Brereton Diaz, who links back up with the Blades after a fruitful loan switch during the 2023/24 season which raised a rare smile on the faces of United fans even as a depressing relegation was confirmed.
Chris Wilder will hope the Chile international goes on to be as successful as James McAtee was over two loan stints in South Yorkshire, before the exciting midfielder then found it immensely hard to make the grade back at Manchester City.
James McAtee's time at Sheffield United
Indeed, the City man was a great success when donning United red and white, with his efforts during the 2022/23 season helping his new side win promotion to the Premier League.
He amassed nine goals and three assists in league action as a lively presence from the middle of the park, leading to a second spell coming his way up in the promised land of the top flight.
Former Sheffield United loanee James McAtee.
The tricky 22-year-old would succeed here too, much like Brereton Diaz managed despite all the on-field difficulties, with a further six goal contributions coming his way in the league before heading back to the Etihad pleased with his time in South Yorkshire.
There must have been some temptation on the end of the Blades to get even more of the old band back together when it was widely reported this month that the Salford-born midfielder was growing restless with his game-time under Pep Guardiola, with Championship rivals Leeds United allegedly sniffing around.
Manchester City's JamesMcAteeduring the warm up before the match
But, no such reunion has occurred. Yet, that doesn’t mean Wilder wouldn’t welcome back another familiar midfielder instead…
Sheffield United looking at "brilliant" PL star
Much like McAtee, Wolverhampton Wanderers man Tommy Doyle must also be getting slightly agitated with his lack of consistent minutes at Molineux, with only three starts coming his way this season in the Premier League.
Off the back of that, the promotion chasers could be willing to test the waters with the Old Gold over securing a deal for Doyle to return to United, with the Sheffield Star reporting earlier this month that a move would be considered owing to the team’s light numbers centrally.
Like his former teammate in the middle, however, Doyle did more than enough during his first stint at the club to suggest he could stroll straight into Wilder’s starting XI, as seen with a thunderbolt effort finding the back of the net to send the Blades to an unbelievable FA Cup semi-final.
In truth, as much as McAtee would often steal the limelight as the standout loanee coming from a top-flight giant, Doyle was equally as key for Paul Heckingbottom’s men in promotion being tasted, despite not being front and centre of every single of the now Preston North End manager’s lineups.

Doyle more than delivered in crunch times at Bramall Lane with seven goal contributions managed from just 21 league starts, with Wilder wanting to bring in the 23-year-old for some added depth to help out the likes of Sydie Peck with Ollie Arblaster sidelined for the foreseeable.
Noted as being a “brilliant” talent in the past by Wolves journalist Lewis Keen when starring in spurts, United could really show they mean business in the promotion race by winning a loan star that has been successful in reaching the Premier League just two years ago.
Former Sheffield United loanee Tommy Doyle.
Whilst Leeds United continue to be quiet in the window, their Yorkshire foes continue to flex their muscles, as the race for promotion heats up once more.
Wilder's next Egan: Sheffield United make enquiry to sign "immense" star
Chris Wilder might now be looking for some new defensive additions at Sheffield United.
