Engelbrecht downplays superhero save after setting social media on fire

The leaping effort at deep midwicket has been viewed more than a million times on Instagram reels alone

Matt Roller17-Jun-2024It was not enough to keep Netherlands in the T20 World Cup, but it might just have persuaded Sybrand Engelbrecht that nothing was going to top it.Speaking moments after Netherlands’ 83-run loss to Sri Lanka in St Lucia, Engelbrecht played down his superhero-style six-save on the midwicket boundary as “a little bit lucky”, even though his track record suggests that it was simply another moment of stunning athleticism and skill in the outfield. A few hours later, he announced his retirement from international cricket, just 24 matches and eight months after it had begun.Engelbrecht was stationed at deep midwicket when Tim Pringle bowled a thigh-high full toss to Angelo Matthews, who swung the ball into the leg side. He briefly moved in off the boundary before realising that it would soar in the cross-wind. He then flung himself at full stretch to catch the ball over his right shoulder, and in a single motion flicked it back into play as he landed over the boundary cushions.

By the time Engelbrecht was asked about the save after Netherlands’ World Cup exit, it had been viewed more than a million times on Instagram reels alone. “Initially, when he hit it, I kind of moved in,” he explained. “I knew there was a wind, but I didn’t think he hit it that well. So I had to kind of back-track a little and kind of stuck the hand out. I suppose it’s a little bit lucky.”He was still frustrated with himself after putting down a tough catch off Matthews in the previous over, covering significant ground and diving at full stretch before the ball popped out of his hands as he hit the turf. “He actually batted really well, but I had an opportunity to catch him… unfortunately, that cost us quite dearly. But yeah, I’m happy with the effort and I’m happy that it stuck.”Related

Netherlands knocked out after Bangladesh beat Nepal; SL sign off with win

Engelbrecht has developed a reputation as one of the leading fielders in the world game since making his Netherlands debut last year at the age of 35. As a teenager, he took a Jonty Rhodes-style diving catch at backward point playing for South Africa at the Under-19 World Cup and he sets high standards for himself.”It’s something that I suppose I pride myself on and as a unit, I think we are up there with the best teams in the world when it comes to fielding,” he said. “We spend a lot of time and effort with the fielding and we do believe that it’s a competitive advantage. To be a part of that is special. It’s something that I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed and will look back on fondly.”Engelbrecht’s effort was not enough to take Netherlands through to the Super Eight. With Bangladesh struggling against Nepal and Sri Lanka steadily accumulating, it had briefly looked as though Netherlands would qualify with a quick run chase. Those hopes faded when they conceded 67 runs in the final four overs and Nepal were bowled out for 85.Sybrand Engelbrecht finished the T20 World Cup as Netherlands’ leading run-scorer•ICC/Getty ImagesNetherlands had “some idea” what was going on in the other game throughout their bowling innings, Engelbrecht said. “But we really tried to focus on our processes… While we were batting, we had a good idea of what the stand and the situation was in the other game. We realised as that game progressed that the likelihood of Bangladesh winning was quite high, so we just wanted to play good cricket and it just got away from us.”Scott Edwards, Netherlands’ captain, was left to rue a missed opportunity to reach the Super Eight after his side let strong positions unravel against South Africa and Bangladesh. “We had good patches throughout the tournament where we gave ourselves a chance to win at least three of those games, but just in those [big] moments, the batting or the bowling or the fielding was just slightly off and against good-quality sides, you just can’t afford that,” he said.Engelbrecht finished his first – and last – T20 World Cup as Netherlands’ leading run-scorer. “Travelling to the different islands has been a world-class experience,” he said. “The hospitality has been second to none, the people are super friendly. It’s been fantastic.”It’s a massive privilege to be on the world stage competing against the best in the world, but I think we’ve tried to prepare as well as we can. We really thought that if we play our brand and style of cricket that we can and wanted to put up a bigger fight. I think there’ll be a little bit of disappointment in the changing room in general.”It’s always a massive privilege and we are always very excited to be a part of this. But we didn’t just come here to fill up the numbers: we really came here to compete, and I do believe that there’s enough talent and skill in our changing room to do that. [There are] a lot of learnings that we’ll take from this and hopefully, it’ll stand us in good stead going forward.”This article was updated on June 17, at 1.20pm BST, following Engelbrecht’s retirement from international cricket

Perez willing to sell: Man City now in talks with "special" Real Madrid ace

As Real Madrid president Florentino Perez looks to make room for even more stars this summer, Manchester City could reportedly take full advantage by welcoming an attacking talent of their own.

Man City "a thousand million points behind Liverpool" – Guardiola

It was around this time last year that Manchester City were on their way to securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title before squaring off against Manchester United in the FA Cup final. On a Wembley outing which ultimately ended in defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side could have been forgiven for their title hangover which allowed United to take full advantage.

A year on, however, they will not be handed that same forgiveness if they fall to defeat against Crystal Palace this weekend. The Citizens are no longer champions. It’s Liverpool’s crown to lose these days. Instead, Guardiola has endured his most difficult season in the Manchester City dugout and is yet to secure Champions League qualification with just two games remaining.

Guardiola even went as far as to admit that victory in the FA Cup final would not suddenly turn City’s season into a success, telling reporters: “The damage would be minimum. It’s not going to confuse [that] the season has been good. The club has to take the decision, the right ones, so next season will be better.

“We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool. I said many times the season hasn’t been good because we define if the season is good or not with the Premier League. This season it could not happen, at the same time we tried to avoid the damage. We have to be calm now and recover.”

ByJoe Nuttall May 14, 2025

However, what such a difficult campaign has seemingly done is spark Manchester City into life in the transfer market. Already, names such as Florian Wirtz are threatening to steal the headlines and he could yet be joined by a Real Madrid star at The Etihad.

Man City in direct contact with Rodrygo

According to Sport in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are now in direct contact with Rodrygo over a summer move. The Real Madrid winger is someone that Perez is reportedly willing to sell for the right price, whilst the Brazilian himself has grown discontent with his role towards the end of Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure.

It’s not often that Madrid lose a Galactico, but as Rodrygo looks to become the main man, the Spaniards could do just that if Manchester City make their move in the coming months.

With 13 goals and 10 assists to his name this season, the Brazilian winger has impressed once again under Ancelotti, who has been a fan of his for some time despite the winger’s reported discontent.

The Real Madrid boss told reporters in 2022: “Both Valverde and Rodrygo are special players. And that’s what modern-day footballers have to be. They can play in different positions and they possess both technical and physical attributes.”

As well as Davies: 3/10 Spurs dud must be axed for the Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur sunk to another defeat, their 20th of the season, in the Premier League when they were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A double from Eberechi Eze, who scored just before and just after the half-time break, put Spurs to the sword, and it could have been even more if not for eight saves from Antonin Kinsky between the sticks.

The Czech star was given a rare run-out in goal as he is not eligible to play in the Europa League, but the shot-stopper was not the only player who was given a rare chance to impress, as Ben Davies also came in at centre-back.

Why Ben Davies should not start the Europa League final

The Wales international came in to start in the left-sided centre-back position against Palace, after he was an unused substitute in both legs of the semi-final clash with Bodo/Glimt.

Davies won seven of his 13 duels against the Eagles, just over half, and put in a decent, but unimpressive, display at the heart of the defence. He certainly did not do enough to suggest that the manager should keep him in the team for the Europa League final after the clash with Aston Villa next weekend.

As you can see in the table above, Micky van de Ven has been far more defensively dominant than him in Europe, which is why the Dutchman should be in line to start against Manchester United.

Davies is not the only player from Sunday’s starting XI who should be ditched from the team after the Aston Villa game, though, as Djed Spence must also be binned for the final.

Why Djed Spence should not start the Europa League final

The English defender lined up at left-back against Palace and did not cover himself in glory for either of the goals with his positioning on that side of the pitch, whilst he also gave the ball away 12 times and only completed 76% of his attempted passes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Football.london handed him a player rating of just 3/10 and wrote that he was ‘all over the place’ and that Palace took ‘advantage’ of his poor positional play throughout the match, despite winning eight of his ten duels.

It is not the first time that his positioning has been questioned. When playing in his more natural right-back berth, Football FanCast suggested that he should have been dropped after the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool because he was allowed his market to get in behind on at least three occasions, once leading to a goal, on that day.

Ange Postecoglou, therefore, should not select Spence at left-back for the Europa League final because his unreliable positioning could cost them big time against the Red Devils.

Spurs will not want to gift chances away, as they did against Liverpool and Palace, with Spence at full-back because his positioning lets the United wingers in too many times down the flanks, which is why he should be dropped.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

Destiny Udogie, meanwhile, has averaged 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won 66% of his duels in the Europa League, whilst also offering a naturally left-footed option to progress the ball in possession down that side.

Not another Mourinho: Levy makes "genius" coach Spurs' top target

Even if Tottenham triumph in the Europa League, most expect Ange Postecoglou to be sacked, so doest Daniel Levy have a “genius” coach top of his list?

2 ByBen Gray May 10, 2025

It is now down to Postecoglou to take Spence out of the XI, whether that is for Villa next week or after the clash with the Villans, in order to play Udogie at left-back in the Europa League final.

Wow: Man Utd seriously considering move for "incredible" £36k-p/w ex-player

Manchester United are now seriously considering a move for an “incredible” former player, as they are starting to realise it was a mistake to let him leave, according to a report.

Summer of change needed at Old Trafford

A slight improvement in form, coupled with the announcement of the new stadium plans, gave Man United fans cause for some excitement prior to the international break, but they were immediately brought back down to earth after the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

The loss against the Tricky Trees once again underlined the need for Ruben Amorim to strengthen his squad during his first summer transfer window as United boss, and the manager has set out to replace a number of underperforming players.

With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling, the Red Devils are looking to bring in a new striker, with the likes of Sporting CP’s VIktor Gyokeres and FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa among the potential targets, alongside Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

There have also been suggestions Andre Onana could be replaced in the summer, and talks over a deal for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan are believed to be progressing, with the Frenchman said to be Amorim’s top target.

However, a new report from Spain has thrown another interesting name into the mix, stating Man United are seriously considering a move for former goalkeeper David De Gea, given the Spaniard’s return to form since signing for Fiorentina.

Fiorentina's DaviddeGea

The United hierarchy are said to have acknowledged they made a mistake by letting De Gea leave at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, and they are now aiming to bring him back to Old Trafford, which could lead to negotiations over a deal.

With Onana costing Amorim’s side valuable points this season, it is looking increasingly likely a replacement will be brought in this summer.

"Incredible" De Gea reigniting career at Fiorentina

The Spanish goalkeeper spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League Golden Glove award two times, including during his final season with United, but he was ultimately replaced with Onana, given the Cameroonian’s ability with his feet.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled this season, making three errors leading to goals in the Premier League, while De Gea has started to reignite his career in Italy, putting in a number of impressive performances for Fiorentina.

Journalist Josh Bunting lauded the £36k-per-week former United man for his “incredible goalkeeping” earlier this season, and he has outperformed Onana on a number of key goalkeeping metrics over the past year.

That said, given that De Gea is now 34-years-old, and Man United have already cut ties with him on one occasion, it is probably wise to move for a younger goalkeeper to replace Onana, and Maignan could be available at a 50% discount this summer.

'It wasn't an easy decision' – Woakes on sacrificing IPL chance for the Ashes

Skipping IPL 2023 gives him the opportunity to play county cricket and push for a Test recall

Matt Roller19-Dec-2022When the longlist of players who had entered next week’s IPL auction was first circulated around franchises at the start of the month, Chris Woakes’ name was a surprise omission.Woakes has played for three different teams in his three IPL seasons – Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017, Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 and Delhi Capitals in 2021 – and would almost certainly have found a suitor on December 23. While he might not have sparked the scale of bidding war expected for his England team-mates Ben Stokes and Sam Curran, the demand for seam-bowling allrounders is always high at mini-auctions.But after missing the whole of the 2022 summer with injury and watching the transformation of England’s Test team under Stokes and Brendon McCullum from afar, Woakes explained that he will instead spend April and May trying to force his way into Ashes contention through performances for Warwickshire in the County Championship.”It wasn’t an easy decision, by any means,” Woakes told ESPNcricinfo. “There’s still a part of me that wishes I could go because the IPL is a great tournament and financially it could be very rewarding – but I didn’t want to make the decision solely on finance. It’s a tricky scenario: having just won a World Cup, potentially stock could be high. There are obviously some other players who are likely to go big but I could have been next on the list behind them.”I had conversations with a lot of people and some with franchises as well, who sounded keen, which made it harder to pull out. But having not played any cricket in the English summer last year, it’s a good opportunity for me to set myself up for, hopefully, a really strong summer with England.”It’s an Ashes year and I haven’t played much red-ball cricket. I need to suggest to people and remind people that I can play red-ball cricket and get through it – both from a fitness point of view, but also to show what I can do to try and have a go at being part of the Ashes.”Related

Woakes spoke to Rob Key, England’s managing director, during the T20I tour to Pakistan in September, who reassured him that he was still seen as an all-format player. “He was very clear that I was still a part of the Test plans,” Woakes recalled, “but obviously I needed to get myself fit, and get my knee right.”Having taken the new ball during England’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, he was then left out of the squad for the ongoing Test series but is at peace with his omission. “At that moment, the World Cup was the priority,” Woakes said, “and we needed guys going to Pakistan that had fitness behind them, or that bowl a touch quicker. My success in the subcontinent with a red ball has been quite limited, so I feel like it made sense.”With two young daughters at home, he has been awake early in the morning watching the series on TV. “To go 2-0 up in Pakistan is an incredible effort. They’re such hard surfaces to force results on, so to do it in the fashion that they have has been amazing. Credit should go to Ben’s captaincy and the way the bowlers have bowled as well: you can score as many runs as you want to but unless you can take 20 wickets, you don’t win Test matches. It’s been great to watch and I’d really love to be a part of it.”Woakes made his Test debut in the final match of England’s Ashes win in 2013 but missed their 2015 victory through injury and has been part of one drawn series and two defeats in Australia in the years since. As a result, he is desperate to have a crack at them next summer. While his stock fell slightly after a difficult 2021-22 winter – he took 11 wickets at 52.36 across England’s Australia and Caribbean tours – he remains a formidable bowler in English conditions, with a career average of 22.63 in home Tests.”Winning an Ashes series where you play a really strong part would be extremely rewarding”•Getty Images”Winning an Ashes series where you play a really strong part would be extremely rewarding. It’s something that I probably would like to tick off,” Woakes said. “The 2019 series was a tight one with some amazing games to be part of, but there’s nothing like winning an Ashes series. Fingers crossed, that’s something we, as an England team, can do in the summer.”Skipping the IPL will give him the opportunity to play for his county, Warwickshire, in the early months of the Championship season. A combination of England commitments and injuries has heavily restricted his availability in recent years: he played a crucial walk-on role in their 2021 title win, but has only made five appearances for them across formats in the last three seasons.”The IPL is hard to turn down because the best players go there, it’s financially rewarding and it’s been brilliant for my career,” Woakes said, “but the trade-off is that opportunity to play for Warwickshire, which I’ve always loved doing. It’s tricky as an international player, particularly with the current schedule, and more so as a bowler: you don’t get the opportunity to come back and play much for your county.”I don’t blame members and fans for giving myself and many other players a bit of stick for not playing for their counties enough, but the schedule means it is just so hard to do now. I love playing for Warwickshire and I’d love to play more, it’s just almost impossible. It’ll be a good time to put the Bear back on and hopefully put in some early performances and get myself in the reckoning for the Ashes.”His involvement in the inaugural ILT20, where he has a contract with Sharjah Warriors, means that the financial blow of missing the IPL will be less severe than it might otherwise have been and illustrates that he has plenty of attractive offers coming his way from the franchise world. But Woakes insisted that, at 33, he has no intention to give up red-ball cricket any time soon and that his knee – which kept him out of seven Tests and 15 white-ball internationals in the summer – feels “a lot better than it was” after surgery in August left him in a race against the clock to be fit for the World Cup.Woakes took the new ball at the T20 World Cup•Alex Davidson/Getty Images”That time might come, but while I’m still capable and still available for selection, my appetite for Test cricket is still really high,” he said. “With the age I am, as a fast bowler, you can easily get sucked into being pigeon-holed as being close to the end, almost. You’ve seen with Stuart [Broad] and Jimmy [Anderson] – and I know they don’t play white-ball cricket – that we try and keep ourselves as fit as we possibly can and there’s no reason why you can’t play until you are a lot older nowadays.”I’ll try and play as long as I possibly can. I certainly don’t want to hang on. That decision might be made for me and if that’s the case, I might be a white-ball specialist one day, but whilst I can and whilst I’m enjoying it, I’ll try and be that three-format cricketer for as long as I possibly can.”Woakes looks set to travel to South Africa for England’s ODIs in late January, and is yet to discuss with the team’s management whether he will travel to New Zealand for the Test series or Bangladesh for the white-ball tour in February-March, with the short turnaround between the two tours likely requiring England to pick completely separate squads. But for now, Woakes has the rare chance to spend the Christmas period at home with friends and family. “It’s been nice to spend a bit of time decompressing, letting it all sink in after the T20 World Cup. My two young girls have been keeping me busy: my eldest daughter is four-and-a-half and my youngest has just turned two. Especially having missed last Christmas, to have a whole December at home will be really nice.”

Liverpool receive green light to make January move to sign "aggressive" Guehi alternative

Liverpool have now received the green light to make their move for a defensive reinforcement in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Slot: Teams "think they can get a result" against Liverpool

It wasn’t a disaster at Anfield as Liverpool came from behind to rescue a draw against Sunderland, but it was hardly an inspiring performance from the Premier League champions yet again.

Despite breaking their transfer record to sign Alexander Isak in the summer, the Swede was back to his subdued ways just days after netting his first Premier League goal for the club against West Ham United. And whilst Florian Wirtz at least played a part in the equaliser and looked bright throughout, Liverpool’s attack was a far cry from their scintillating best of past campaigns.

What should concern Arne Slot the most is his own admission that teams now believe they can “get a result” against his Liverpool side. That should never be the case at the home of the champions, but the Dutchman also denied that Anfield’s fear factor has evaporated this season.

He told reporters: “No, not Anfield. For sure. But it’s clear that teams that play us now think they can get a result. Not only think, because that has been shown this season.

“And even in the games we’ve won, they also fuelled the confidence for other teams like, ‘Hmm, something is possible’ because the wins we had at the beginning of the season weren’t easy ones as well.”

The only positive for Slot to take from the Sunderland game is that his side, whilst found wanting in attack, were harder to break down defensively. With fixtures coming thick and fast, that defensive foundation will be important but so will any depth that Liverpool add in that area in January, especially if they sign Joel Ordonez.

Liverpool receive green light to make Ordonez move

As reported by TeamTalk, Liverpool have received a green light to make their move for Ordonez after maintaining contact with the defender’s camp. Racing alongside Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of the Club Brugge defender, the Reds could land an ideal alternative for Marc Guehi.

Despite reportedly reopening talks to sign the Crystal Palace man, Liverpool may be forced to wait until next summer when his contract expires to secure his signature. If that does prove to be the case, then those at Anfield should turn to Ordonez.

Although Como scout Ben Mattinson aired caution around Ordonez’s “aggressive” nature last year, it’s the exact trait that Liverpool have been lacking this season. The Reds have been physically outmatched and the arrival of the 21-year-old would go a long way towards solving that problem.
