Southampton teen could be their perfect replacement if Che Adams leaves

Russell Martin will choose to remain optimistic about Southampton's automatic promotion chances still, buoyed on potentially to make a last-ditch surge for the Championship top two spots off the back of their rivals slipping up.

The Saints will only break into the automatic positions again if Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Leeds United continue faltering, but it did help that the South Coast club managed to beat Watford 3-2 last match in dramatic fashion to keep striving to finish near the top of the summit.

Southampton look to be facing a losing battle when it comes to keeping Che Adams around at St. Mary's regardless of whether they taste promotion success or not, with a young gem waiting in the wings hungry to impress up top if the ex-Birmingham City man does indeed walk away from Martin's men this approaching summer.

Che Adams' future at Southampton

Southampton are in very real danger over losing Adams on a free transfer, a crushing potential outcome for the Saints considering Adams has bagged 15 goals in all competitions this season.

che-adams-everton-transfer-premier-league

With Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers names that keep popping up as keen suitors for the Scotland international, alongside Leeds United entering into the fray as another interested party according to reports, this will be an interesting transfer saga to watch unfold when the action on the pitch in the second tier has finished.

No doubt Southampton would also flex their muscles in the transfer window to replace the gap left behind by Adams away from relying on youth players instantly succeeding, but they could do far worse than bedding in an academy gem here and there into senior action soon to attempt to unearth another star straight from their Academy.

Before any of that happens, however, Adams will be focused on doing his very best to help his side clinch promotion and return back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Southampton's teen Adams replacement

19-year-old Luke Pearce could well benefit from Adams exiting Southampton, with Martin showing during his short spell in charge of the Saints to date that he isn't afraid to play youngsters if needed.

In the FA Cup this season mainly, Martin has drafted in the likes of Tyler Dibling and Jayden Meghoma into the first-team spotlight who have previously starred in the U21 system on the South Coast before being given their big break.

Pearce could use this as inspiration to break into the senior side soon, having bagged six goals from nine Premier League 2 appearances this season which included a strike against Nottingham Forest last time out.

These strikes this campaign have taken the standout teenager's goal total for all youth sides at the Saints to an impressive 30 goals from 71 games, with Pearce now clamouring for his first-ever first-team chance subsequently.

A mixture of loan spells in the men's game have been up-and-down for the Irish attacker however, with Pearce only finding the back of the net once in a brief stint at Weston-Super-Mare earlier this season before returning to the familiar comforts of U21 football.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Still, current Saints loan star Taylor Harwood-Bellis – who is calmly excelling at Southampton on loan from Manchester City – used to be an untested youngster himself who was desperate for a chance to impress making the step-up to the men's game.

It won't be an immediate jump-up that is successful for Pearce, but Southampton need to have some plans in place in case Adams does leave very soon.

Man Utd messed up selling £9m star who’s now worth more than Mount

Manchester United have conducted poor business in recent times, with the Red Devils splashing out over £700m on new signings since the 2020/21 campaign.

Only a handful of the arrivals, signed off by the Glazers, have been successes, with the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez tightening up the United defence, after a few years of defensive errors.

However, signings such as Antony, Donny Van De Beek and Jadon Sancho haven't worked out, with the trio costing the club over £180m – with two of whom currently away from Old Trafford, reflecting their lack of impact at the club.

Man United's Jadon Sancho

Casemiro is another player who has failed to live up to expectations despite a glittering career before his move to England. The Brazilian cost the Red Devils £70m, on £350k-per-week, the highest of anyone at the club.

The club could've avoided the big-money signing of Casemiro had they kept hold of a youngster, with the former United man now excelling elsewhere in the Premier League.

James Garner's stats for Manchester United

After joining the United Academy at the age of eight, James Garner had a successful progression from the club's youth ranks at Carrington, before eventually making his first-team debut for his boyhood club back in February 2019.

17-year-old Garner replaced Fred in the 90th minute of the 3-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace, before subsequently signing an extension just a month later.

He would make his Europa League debut in October 2019, before leaving the club on loan to join Championship side Watford ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Garner failed to receive the game time he needed to progress, with his deal being terminated to allow him to join Nottingham Forest – a move that would allow him to flourish, with former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson lauding the midfielder as "exceptional".

He quickly settled into life at the City Ground, scoring a screamer on the final day against Preston, before re-joining the Reds on loan once more for the 2021/22 season.

The midfielder was a crucial part of Forest's promotion-winning side, featuring 41 times and scoring on four occasions with Garner stealing his claim for a regular first-team place at Old Trafford.

However, Erik ten Hag and the board decided to sell the now 23-year-old after just seven United outings, with Garner subsequently going on to have a fabulous campaign in the Premier League this season.

James Garner's market value in 2024

The youngster joined Everton for a fee in the region of £9m in 2022, with Garner jumping at the opportunity to play regular football in England's top flight.

His displays in midfield under Sean Dyche this campaign have seen his market value soar to £25.7m as per CIES Football Observatory – a figure that is higher than United's £55m signing Mason Mount, whose value has dropped to just £17m less than a year after he arrived at Old Trafford.

Everton midfielder James Garner.

The "phenomenal" talent, as dubbed by Trevor Sinclair, has featured 27 times in the Premier League this season, with the youngster remarkably producing better stats than Casemiro in multiple key areas.

It's undeniable that the Brazilian is more suited as a ball-winning midfielder than the Everton man, but given Garner's age and talent, it seems as though the Red Devils made a mistake in allowing him to leave the club.

Casemiro is coming to the end of his career, with United needing to replace him in the years to come. They will undoubtedly splash big money on a replacement, but they could've saved themselves a lot of money had they stuck by Garner and allowed him to flourish at his boyhood club.

Arsenal eyeing £35m move to sign "incredible" star ahead of Liverpool

Whilst the majority of their focus will undoubtedly be on the Premier League title race with just eight games to go, reports suggest that Arsenal also have one eye on the summer transfer window and landing a player who is likely to be a champion himself come May.

Arsenal transfer news

The only guarantee of the Premier League title race seems to be that it's destined to go down to the final kick to create one of the most intense finishes to a campaign in recent history. After suffering heartbreak against a dominant Manchester City side last season, Arsenal are now on course to fall victim to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool farewell tour, but just one bad result for the Merseysiders could change that.

Arsenal's "unstoppable" 7/10 titan was even better than Smith Rowe vs Luton

Away from the action, with or without silverware, Arsenal have set their sights on improvements this summer. Reports have mainly been centred around strikers with that killer instinct Gabriel Jesus so desperately lacks, with Viktor Gyokeres among those linked with a move to The Emirates. There's no doubt that he would add that clinical nature in front of goal after an incredible season at Sporting CP.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

It's not just strikers being linked, however. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Arsenal are eyeing a move to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen alongside Liverpool and Manchester United this summer following the right-back's impressive campaign.

Available for just £35m due to his release clause, Arsenal would be getting a player that clubs chiefs reportedly believe is a "bargain" this summer and giving current right-back Ben White plenty to think about in North London, despite his solid season. Frimpong, of course, has played a vital part in Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Leverkusen side and is on course to finally dethrone Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, only adding to the reasons why he's attracting the likes of Arsenal ahead of this summer.

"Incredible" Frimpong would add elements White lacks

Whilst there's little doubt about White's defensive ability, some questions can be asked about his capabilities going forward. After all, it's easy to forget that he is a centre-back by trade due to the incredible job he's done on the flank so far this season. But then the question should come the way of Frimpong. Is the Leverkusen man good enough defensively to step into Mikel Arteta's system and away from a back five in Germany? There's truly only one way to find out, though Frimpong's stats compared to White's still paint quite the picture.

Frimpong's rise has been coming for some time too, with former Celtic boss Neil Lennon previously singing his praises. His fitness levels are incredible, I think that the fans have really taken to him."

Tom Curran holds nerve at death as England square series in two-run thriller

England 204 for 7 (Stokes 47, Roy 40, Moeen 39, Ngidi 3-48) beat South Africa 202 for 7 (de Kock 65, van der Dussen 43*) by two runs
A one-run margin on Wednesday, a two-run margin on Friday. Any chance of your fingernails growing back by Sunday? On an evening that throbbed like a Durban minibus, Tom Curran held his nerve superbly in a death-over scenario that had uncanny parallels with the World Cup final Super Over, as England levelled the three-match T20I series with just the decider at Centurion to come.On an evening featuring 28 sixes – more than had ever before been scored in a T20I involving England or South Africa – the contest came down to the very final over, the very final ball, with Curran defending 15 runs, the same figure that Jofra Archer had had to play with at Lord’s last summer, and then as now, the rollercoaster went to the very final twist.A second-ball slog for six over cow corner? Check. Five runs needed from three balls? Check, as Dwaine Pretorius set himself to be a hero with a lacerating drive through the covers. Three from two? Check, as a canny leg-stump yorker was dug out to midwicket. Only then did the script truly deviate, as Curran showcased that desire to be a hero that sets the very best death-over specialists apart from the rest.Up he popped with consecutive wickets, a pinpoint yorker to trap Pretorius in front of off – a moment that flirted with controversy as Quinton de Kock, the captain, appeared to instigate South Africa’s use of the review with an impassioned signal from the dressing room. And then, the sucker punch. With Rassie van der Dussen stranded at the wrong end after keeping his team alive with 43 from 26, Curran served up a back-of-the-hand slowie to the new man Bjorn Fortuin, who could only flap an attempted ramp to short fine leg.Even then there was an agonised wait for the final, final verdict, as Adil Rashid had been back-pedalling in anticipation of the catch. The umpires again called for the second opinion, but at the moment of Curran’s release, Rashid was not obviously outside the fielding circle. And thus the decision, and the result, stood. Crumbs.Powerhouse cameosThere were contributions all down the order from both teams, but none more thrilling than the efforts of de Kock and Moeen Ali, who exchanged a pair of the most startlingly clean-hitting cameos imaginable to ignite each half of the contest.Building on the earlier efforts of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, Moeen made 39 from just 11 deliveries, including three fours and four sixes. At one stage he defied the physics of his midwicket followthrough with an outrageous pat over point off a Lungi Ngidi full-toss.But set an imposing 205 for victory, de Kock responded with the insouciant genius that he has displayed in every format this winter. He blazed his way to a 17-ball fifty – the fastest in T20Is for South Africa – and 65 from 22 all told. His eight sixes all came in a blistering mid-innings onslaught that spanned 15 balls – three in four balls from Moeen, two in two from Curran. There was simply nowhere safe in the ground, least of all for the motionless ball-boy at midwicket, who was all but mown down by a rampaging Ben Stokes, hurtling in vain round the rope.Ngidi poses the Buttler questionIn his previous two white-ball games, at Johannesburg in the final ODI and at Buffalo Park on Wednesday, Ngidi’s returns with old and new ball had been revealing – combined figures of 0 for 72 in seven overs at the top of the innings, and 6 for 21 in six at the death. But on this occasion he needed just five Powerplay deliveries to make his mark, and in so doing, he passed the start-finish question directly across to his victim.Few players in England’s line-up are better capable of mugging the death overs than Jos Buttler … but his innings of 2 from 4 balls in the Powerplay here, coupled with his inconclusive 15 from 10 on Wednesday reawakened the question about where best to use him. A cross-seamer from Ngidi lured a flat-footed nick to the keeper, and for the second match running, England’s ODI openers, Roy and Bairstow were united in the middle before the end of the third over. And for the second match running, neither man died wondering in reprising their iconic 50-over form: 72 from 39 balls at East London, 52 from 25 today. Like Gilchrist and Hayden, or Greenidge and Haynes, perhaps some partnerships are just born to dovetail.Stokes in the spotlight …Remember the build-up to the 2019 World Cup, and the genuine questions about whether Stokes’ place was under threat? (Google the articles, it would be mean to single anyone out…) Well, welcome to the lead-up to the 2020 T20 World Cup, in which the Stokes question is likely to rumble much like his laboured innings of 47 from 30 balls – notwithstanding it surpassed his previous T20I best of 38.It looked all right in the final analysis – though that was more a testament to Stokes’ refusal to surrender despite barely timing a stroke all evening. Indeed, had Beuran Hendricks reacted a touch quicker at long-on, Stokes might have fallen to a slog-pull for the second time in as many innings. But the shot skittered to the rope for his first boundary, instead of sending him on his way for a sluggish 6 from 10.Stokes’ stunning performances in Tests and ODIs of late have stemmed, first and foremost, from a watertight defence and an ability to accelerate into his day’s work. And sure enough, the longer he endured, the more he began to find his range, as the silken timing of Moeen at the other end, let alone de Kock in South Africa’s reply, showed that this was not a pitch on which muscle alone could seize the day……and yet, who in their right mind would take the field without Stokes in their line-up? With David Miller threatening to fill de Kock’s sizeable shoes, Stokes was thrown the ball for a pivotal 13th over. A length ball, wide line but appreciable nibble off the deck, drew a wafty air shot and instantly changed the mood. Another dot followed, again outside the eyeline, and Miller’s only response was a desperate slog to long-on. Van der Dussen and Jon-Jon Smuts exchanged singles but the damage had been done.Pace on, pace off Dale Steyn made his first international appearance in 11 months at East London, but the Durban crowd was treated to a rather lower-octane opening. With the old man resting due to the 48-hour turnaround, in came the offspinner Fortuin, whose ODI debut on this ground last week was obliterated by the rain, but whose 2 for 19 in three overs had been crucial to a series-squaring win against India in his previous T20I in September. His evening’s work was short and to the point – his first Powerplay over was rudely dented by a massive wipe for six from Roy, and his second was self-sabotaged by a spilled return catch as Bairstow battered a drive. He wasn’t seen again after that, not even during England’s fallow middle overs as his fellow spinner Taibraz Shamsi put a check on a rampant run-rate.Bavuma 1 Jordan 0Two of the most outstanding outfielders in world cricket went head-to-head in this contest, and it was South Africa’s representative who stole the evening’s plaudits. Temba Bavuma’s running, stretching, tumbling catch to intercept a bullet of a drive from Chris Jordan at long-off was a stunner … though it would have been surpassed by the oh-so-near miss off Stokes in the same position just two balls earlier. His athleticism couldn’t be faulted, but his 5-foot-nothing frame just couldn’t stretch the distance.A handful of overs later, however, the roles were reversed. Jordan the bowler, Bavuma the hitter … and Jordan the dropper, as he stuck out his left hand in full expectation of clinging onto a regulation blinder, but watched in disbelief as a fierce off-drive thundered out of his fingers. And then, in his final over of the evening, he repeated the dose to reprieve Pretorius. Lesser cricketers would never have reacted fast enough to be deemed culpable.Pace is pace yaarThe decisive moment of South Africa’s innings, and ultimately the match, came from a delivery that de Kock ought perhaps have been rather better acquainted with. At East London, Mark Wood had been extraordinarily lucky not to have been hauled from the attack after consecutive beamers from his first two balls. The second was deemed by the square leg umpire to have dipped below waist-height just in time, though de Kock could hardly have been less fazed. He slapped it for six, having under-edged the former for four to make it 11 from 2.But this evening, when Wood served up another high full-bunger, de Kock’s eye this time betrayed him. Stokes at long-on completed the catch (albeit there was a nervous wait for the third umpire’s verdict), and two balls later, a 92mph lifter strangled Bavuma down the leg side. For bowlers of a lesser velocity, they’d have counted as a pair of pies. On such small margins…

Newcastle now ahead of Barcelona in race for “fantastic” star this summer

Barcelona are believed to be providing stiff competition with Newcastle United for the signing of a "fantastic" player this summer, according to a new transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies won't be able to spend recklessly in the coming months, with the club needing to comply with Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, but that doesn't mean there won't be fresh faces heading to St James' Park.

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024

It looks as though Newcastle could be targeting a number of Premier League players, looking to bring in individuals who know the division well, and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi is one such figure who has been linked with a move to the club. The same applies to Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who is also wanted by the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is another option further up the pitch, but Tottenham are also showing a keen interest in snapping up the Englishman.

Away from the Premier League, Newcastle are thought to be the frontrunners to complete the signing of Sporting CP central defender Ousmane Diomande, who has been linked with a switch a number of times in recent months, along with teammate Goncalo Inacio.

Newcastle favourites to sign "fantastic" star

According to Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Barcelona are competing with Newcastle for the signing of Federico Chiesa, with the Italian's Juventus future up in the air currently. However, it is noted that the Magpies are in "pole position" to get their man, despite the heavyweights involved in the race.

The fact that Newcastle have been backed to snap up the winger so many times does suggest that he is a genuine target, and it's easy to see why Eddie Howe would see him as a great addition to his squad.

Chiesa could certainly be looked at as an upgrade on Miguel Almiron out on the right-hand side of the Magpies' attack, with Rio Ferdinand heaping praise on him back in 2021:

"He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking ‘why didn’t we get him?’ He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament. It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent, he wants to run in behind."

At 26, Chiesa is at a great point in his career to come in and hit the ground running for Newcastle, providing powerful running, expert dribbling ability and a reliable end product, having scored 30 goals and registered 22 assists in 124 appearances for Juve since joining from Fiorentina, where he netted 34 times.

The only current downside would be that the Italian is yet to make up his mind about his Juventus future and could decide to stay this summer, though the report does imply that not signing a new deal in Turin is a possibility amid a potential change of manager.

Lachlan Pfeffer (50), Nathan McSweeney (24) and Sam Heazlett (34) played their part in taking the fight to the visitors, but once Sutherland got his act together, wickets fell in a rush, his 5 for 34 taking Queensland from 3 for 90 to 184 all out. That gave Victoria a lead of 146, and despite Gannon’s burst – he picked up two wickets in the 13th over of the innings and one more in the 17th – Travis Dean (34*) and Matthew Short (15*) made sure they ended the day with their noses well in front.

Former Everton chief Kieth Wyness has tipped Everton to receive perhaps the strangest FFP punishment ever. Speaking to Football Insider, he claimed that they could receive a never seen before deduction of just half a Premier League point.

This comes because Everton opted to appeal their second points deduction, having successfully appealed their first and seeing their 10 point penalty fall to six.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

And Wyness is "very concerned" that this action could see them handed another penalty, which may only consist of a half point but may prove crucial come the final day of the season.

“I think a suspended points deduction would be good,” Wyness said. “I’m still very concerned about where this could go and whether it could be a half-point deduction or if it is cancelled entirely.

It is still strange and we don’t know where we will end up – half a point could still be key for Everton this season after they took a hit to their goal difference this week.

A decision is expected before the end of the campaign after the appeal was fast-tracked, but there is no date with destiny for Everton just yet.
