Chris Gayle has announced that he will be part of the fourth edition of the Everest Premier League, Nepal’s domestic T20 tournament. The West Indies batsman said he would be playing for Pokhara Rhinos in the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on February 29.”I will be visiting Nepal for the biggest sporting event, the Everest Premier League,” Gayle said in a video message on Twitter. “Come and support my team Pokhara Rhinos and be part of a magnificent cricket fiesta.”Gayle, who returned from a hamstring injury to play for the Chattogram Challengers in the second half of the Bangladesh Premier League, made 144 runs in four games. He was also part of Jozi Stars’ disastrous Mzansi Premier League campaign last season, following which he took a “break” from cricket for the rest of 2019, even expressing his unavailability to the West Indies selectors for the ODI series in India. During a recent media interaction in Dhaka, the 40-year-old said that he will continue playing T20s for a while yet.He was also not part of West Indies’ recently concluded home series against Ireland, but the team management and selection panel had earlier said that the door was open to all players including seniors like Gayle to be part of the T20I side. His West Indies team-mate Dwayne Bravo recently made a comeback during the Ireland series, after coming out of international retirement aged 36.Gayle last played for West Indies in what was expected to be his “farewell” game in the third ODI in Port-of-Spain against India in August. His last T20I was in March 2019 against England in Basseterre.

Tottenham make out-of-window £26 million bid to sign the "new Pedri"

Tottenham have made an out-of-window bid to sign a player called the "new Pedri" as technical director Johan Lange attempts an early move, according to a surprise report this week.

Spurs' aim to sign a new forward and promising talents

Ange Postecoglou is on record stating his wish for Spurs to become a dream destination for some of Europe's brightest young talents, as his side continue to be linked with some of the continent's most exciting starlets.

26-year-old open to summer move to Tottenham, Ange wants him as well

Tottenham remain admirers of Antonio Nusa from Club Brugge, despite failing to sign him in the January window, and they've also been named in the race for AC Milan teenager Franceso Camarda.

This comes after their brilliant capture of Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall, with Spurs beating Barcelona to his signing on January deadline day.

“You can try to sell a vision to someone, but if there’s tangible physical evidence of it… Anyone who has watched us since I’ve joined will have seen the aspirations we have to be the kind of team we want to be," said Postecoglou on his aim to bring in promising talent.

“That’s not just me saying it, we’re actually doing it. OK, we’re not the finished product by any stretch. But we’re giving young players an opportunity. Destiny, Pape and Micky, all guys in their early 20s who have already played significant roles.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

“We’re building a team. From our perspective, it’s pleasing and hopefully we become a club which is a preferred destination for talented young players. There aren’t too many hidden gems around."

Tottenham have appeared to err on the side of a younger face when it comes to bolstering their senior squad, ever since Postecoglou's arrival last summer. Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin and Brennan Johnson, who are all under the age of 23, have been brought in most recently with all three set to play a key role over the coming years.

Spurs, though, have been tipped to sign another forward this summer by reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano – and it's a good possibility that the new attacker in question will have many years ahead of him.

Now, as per Catalan source E-Noticies, Lange is moving very quickly for one of his targets.

Who started the 'ice cold' celebration? Chelsea's Cole Palmer told he didn't by NBA star Trae Young as true origins of the pose are revealed

Cole Palmer's reputation as the inventor of his famous celebration has been called into question by basketball star Trae Young.

  • NBA star insists he came up with the idea
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Atlanta Hawks star is known to do a similar celebration as the Chelsea hero by crossing his arms to mime being cold. Palmer started marking his goals in that way last year, but the NBA sensation insists it was he, not the England international, who did it first.

    WHAT YOUNG SAID

Young, whose nickname is Ice Trae, says he came up with the celebration, telling the Podcast P with Paul George: "I never heard, respectfully. I heard he's a pretty good soccer player. I can vividly remember being in my basement with my homie like just watching games and seeing our players, our favorite players, doing that sh*t and I was like: 'We got to come up with something.' He was like, 'Sh*t, you Ice Trae. Be cold like sh*t'. And I remember hitting a three. Like I don't know if it was a game-winner or it was a three, and I just did it and then sh*t. It just, I kind of ran with it. I didn't get it from nobody."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer, however, has never claimed that he invented the celebration. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is nicknamed Cold Palmer due to the composure he has shown in front of goal since joining Chelsea from Manchester City last year. He scored 25 times in all competitions for the Blues last season.

Ange and Levy hold internal Spurs talks as £13m Werner alternative emerges

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy have been holding internal Tottenham talks over the club's summer transfer plans, and they've been informed that they can sign a Timo Werner alternative for just £13 million.

Werner out for rest of season as decision looms on Tottenham future

After signing on loan from RB Leipzig in January, Werner got off to a brilliant start with goals and assists coming pretty quickly, but the German's end product died off soon after that, and he's now been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

ByEmilio Galantini May 2, 2024

The former Chelsea forward picked up a hamstring problem, ruling him out for Spurs' remaining few games, so he'll be relying on his previous performances as an audition to stay in north London past 2023/2024.

“Not good. We've had a couple of injuries. Timo with his hamstring. With only two to three weeks or so left, he'll miss the rest of the season," said Postecoglou on Werner's injury. "Ben Davies got a calf injury in the game and that's the rest of his season."

Werner's loan deal includes a £15 million option-to-buy for Tottenham, and the big decision over whether to trigger that clause now awaits Levy. The 28-year-old, for his part, is on record stating that he is happy at the club.

"I think the only thing I can say in the moment is that I like to play football here and the rest is not my turn," said Werner on potentially staying at Tottenham. "It's fun. I think the way we play, I can enjoy my football. My strengths fit well into the system and at the end it is about running, giving everything on the pitch and that's what I can try."

Werner has also reportedly told his agents he'd like to remain at Spurs, and while the winger has slotted well into Postecoglou's system, there are also concerns over just how wasteful he can be in front of goal.

It will be interesting to see if the Lilywhites opt to keep him on for next campaign, but they do have alternatives.

Tottenham informed they can sign Iling-Junior for just £13 million

One of them is Juventus forward Samuel Illing-Junior, a player who Spurs have been repeatedly linked with before. According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham have been informed they can sign Illing-Junior for just £13 million, coming as both Postecoglou and Levy hold internal talks over the club's transfer plans for this summer window.

He would be an even cheaper deal to strike than Werner, which will come as enticing as Spurs look to save money where possible so they can bolster other areas of the squad. Illing-Junior is young with plenty of potential and years ahead of him, not to mention very quick in the final third.

Samuel Iling-Junior

“Iling Junior is a very quick player, who loves to take on opposing full-backs and attack the vertical spaces, in a very direct way,” said journalist Michele Neri.

“He is a left winger who can also play as a right winger if needed. He has a great sense for dribbling and a speed from a standing start that other Juventus players do not have.

“In these qualities you can absolutely see shades of Rafael Leao when the AC Milan superstar was a bit younger. The fans went crazy for him after the Benfica game where he played 20 minutes and really shone, providing an assist to Milik."

“I think if you see the type of the players we have at the moment, it’s players which have a big, big commitment of [to] the club, which is very important. West Indies Tests in spotlight as UK moves to COVID-19 'delay' phase

Boris Johnson confirmed the UK government is “considering” banning sporting fixtures on Thursday

England’s Test series in Sri Lanka has been cancelled due to the growing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and their home series against West Indies in June – as well as the T20 Blast – is under threat, with both events scheduled for a period that the UK government has identified as the likely peak of the virus in the country.Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed at a press conference on Thursday afternoon that sporting fixtures will not be banned with immediate effect, but said that such a move is under consideration, which could wreak havoc with the English cricketing summer.England confirmed the series in Sri Lanka had been postponed on Friday, walking off the field on the second day of their tour match against a Board President’s XI moments after the decision was announced.”Due to the Covid-19 pandemic worsening globally, and after discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket, we have today made the decision to return our players to the UK and postpone the forthcoming Test series between Sri Lanka and England,” a statement read.”At this time, the physical and mental wellbeing of our players and support teams is paramount. We will now look to bring them home to their families as soon as possible. These are completely unprecedented times, and decisions like this go beyond cricket.”We would like to thank our colleagues at Sri Lanka Cricket for their outstanding support and assistance throughout this situation. We look forward to returning to Sri Lanka in the very near future to fulfil this important Test series.”The global sporting calendar has already been thrown into chaos by the spread of the virus, with hundreds of events postponed, cancelled, or played behind closed doors. In England, four counties have cancelled their pre-season tours overseas, while at least two more are expected to return home early.ALSO READ: Newsfile – ICC Board to hold March meeting via conference callSir Patrick Vallance, the UK’s chief scientific adviser, said during the Prime Minister’s press conference that the peak is “10-14 weeks away, maybe slightly longer”, leaving the English cricket season in a nightmare situation which could result in a huge number of fixtures cancelled or played behind closed doors.England are scheduled to play three Tests against West Indies, with the series starting at The Oval on June 4. That date is currently 12 weeks away, in the middle of the expected peak period. The T20 Blast is scheduled to start on May 28, with the group stage running until July 12.”We are considering the question of banning major public events such as sporting fixtures,” Mr Johnson said, describing the virus as “the biggest public health crisis in a generation”.”The scientific advice, as we’ve said over the last couple of weeks, is that banning such events will have little effect on the spread,” he said.”But there is also the issue of the burden that such events can place on public services, so we’re discussing these issues with colleagues in all parts of the United Kingdom. We’ll have more to say shortly about further action in that respect. At all stages we have been guided by the science, and we will do the right thing at the right time.”The cancellation of a whole home Test series would be a significant financial blow for the ECB, while the T20 Blast generates a major proportion of most counties’ income. It is possible that the tournament could be pushed back further in the summer – possibly at the expense of the final rounds of County Championship fixtures – but there is precious little room in the schedule for change.More immediately, the County Championship is scheduled to start on April 12. While crowds are typically relatively low, they regularly exceed 2000 at certain grounds, and the main demographic of match-going fans is elderly, increasing their vulnerability to the virus. It is possible that games – almost all of which are streamed for free online – could be played behind closed doors, and the ECB is in close contact with government to discuss its options.Sir Patrick explained that the nature of the virus means that a blanket ban on sporting fixtures is unlikely to have a major impact on its spread. “On average one person infects two or three others,” he said. “You therefore have a very low probability of infecting a large number of people in a stadium, or a rather higher probability of infecting people very close to you.”And that means that most of the transmission tends to take place actually with friends and colleagues in close environments, not in the big environments. So, it is true, of course that any cancellation can have some effect.”But if you get a displacement activity where you end up with everyone congregating somewhere else, you may actually have perversely an increased risk, particularly in an indoors environment.”

Ireland's home summer at 'high risk' due to coronavirus

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom has conceded that there is a “high risk” that home series against New Zealand and Pakistan this summer will fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic. The start of the Irish season has already been pushed back to the end of May, meaning that Bangladesh’s scheduled tour for three ODIs and four T20Is has been postponed, and with international travel severely limited as things stand, it is possible that Ireland will not play a single home fixture this summer.New Zealand are due to play three ODIs and three T20Is from June 19, while Pakistan are scheduled to play two T20Is in July in between series in the Netherlands and England.”We’re all going to have to take a pragmatic approach – we just don’t know what’s going to happen even if sport does get back up and running in June,” Deutrom said. “With regards to international cricket, we remain in a wait-and-see holding pattern. Clearly, there is a high risk that our men’s home series against New Zealand and Pakistan… may be postponed if government restrictions remain in place.”Of course, some of the challenge we face in trying to bring some degree of certainty are no different to any other sport with international opposition – for example attaining visas for visiting teams and their support staff may not be possible as the Department of Foreign Affairs and the UK Foreign Office are currently not processing visa applications.”In addition, each country will take the advice of their home government, so teams may not even be in a position to travel to Europe. More specific to our situation, both New Zealand and Pakistan are visiting multiple countries on their tours, so that adds an extra layer of complexity. Then there are more logistical issues such as hotel and international flight bookings, the movement and staffing of broadcast facilities, and complying with the restrictions that may still exist around large group gatherings.”Two weeks ago, NZC chief executive David White indicated that the tour to Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and the Caribbean was “most unlikely”, while PCB chairman Ehsan Mani told the board’s podcast this week that “preparation for the tour might become an issue if this keeps going the way it is.””It will also depend to a large degree on what the situation is like in England and Ireland,” Mani said. “If those series are disrupted, it will have a lot of impact. [The national boards] will also obviously have a huge financial impact. To reschedule those [tours] to fit into a future FTP will become a big challenge.”Irish cricket faces a further obstacle in that it has no permanent stadium, and relies heavily on temporary infrastructure at home fixtures. “Not only does this extend our lead-times for series preparation,” Deutrom said, “but also – at this time of crisis – we are aware that there is a shortage of temporary or portable infrastructure on the market as most is understandably in use by [Irish and Northern Irish health services].”The groundsman at Malahide – the ground near Dublin due to host both fixtures against Pakistan – has been temporarily repatriated to England by the local club, and Deutrom has previously indicated Cricket Ireland would monitor its readiness to host international cricket once restrictions are lifted.Deutrom also confirmed that the board has taken measures to preserve jobs and “to buffer the organisation through at least the next two months” with revenue shortfalls expected through loss of broadcast and sponsorship revenue. All non-playing staff have taken a 20% wage cut for April and May, while Deutrom himself will take a 25% cut for the rest of the calendar year.Centrally-contracted players have not been asked to take a cut on their retainer, on account of the losses already incurred due to the absence of match fees. “To ask them to take a further cut to their base remuneration… would be unreasonable,” Deutrom said.It remains to be seen how well-equipped Cricket Ireland is to deal with the crisis financially, with the annual report for 2019 due to be published within the next few weeks. The board’s 2018 accounts showed that cash reserves had been depleted to just €13,470 (14,700 USD approx), with the achievement of Test status leading to vastly increased costs, while Mani has warned that many boards will “feel the pinch” of the crisis, not least if the T20 World Cup is postponed.

Klopp must now drop 2/10 star who may have cost Liverpool the title

Liverpool's title chances took a hit on Sunday as they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Anfield.

The Reds were wasteful in front of goal throughout the afternoon and failed to get themselves back into the match after Eberechi Eze's early opener.

Tyrick Mitchell found the England international in inexplicable space in the box to calmly pass the ball beyond Alisson and into the back of the net in the 14th minute.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

There were a number of poor performers on the day for Liverpool but one player must now be brutally ditched by Jurgen Klopp, after potentially costing Liverpool the title, is central midfielder Curtis Jones.

How Curtis Jones may have cost Liverpool the title

The Reds had the chance to move to the top of the Premier League table with a win against Crystal Palace, and Arsenal's defeat to Aston Villa later in the day meant that they would have stayed there.

Liverpool would have been ahead of current champions Manchester City with six games left to play but now find themselves behind both the Cityzens and the Gunners, which leaves them with plenty of ground to cover if they want to secure the title in Klopp's final season at the club.

conor-gallagher-curtis-jones-tottenham-opinion

Jones played a significant role in the team's loss to Palace as the England U21 international missed a glorious chance to pull the Reds level during the second half, and that could have provided a platform for the side to then kick on and secure all three points.

He was sent flying clean through on goal, one-on-one with Dean Henderson, and somehow managed to send his right-footed effort considerably wide of the right-hand post.

No Liverpool player had a higher Expected Goals (xG) in the game than Jones (0.72) and this speaks to how much he let the side down with his wastefulness in front of goal.

As you can see in the table above, the Englishman was also weak out of possession, with ten of his 15 duels lost, and failed to create a single chance for his teammates throughout the game.

Jones was also partially to blame for the winning goal from Eze as he failed to track his compatriot's run into the box, which left him free to finish from Mitchell's cross. However, Ibrahima Konate was also in a questionable position – standing five yards ahead of the near post marking no one, so it was not only the midfielder at fault.

Piecing the 23-year-old dud's contributions to the game on and off the ball, GOAL journalist Tom Maston handed the academy graduate a dismal match rating of 2/10 – citing his error for the only goal of the game and his huge miss one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Overall, Jones was culpable for Liverpool's loss with his performance in and out of possession, and that is why he may now have cost the Reds the title with this loss handing the advantage to Arsenal and City.

It is also why Klopp must now brutally ditch him from the starting XI, with Dominik Szoboszlai – who created three chances and one 'big chance' off the bench – a possible candidate to replace him.

Journalist says Rangers are among the clubs "tracking" 20 y/o gem

Rangers are among the clubs "tracking" a 20-year-old "sensation" ahead of the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Rangers incomings & outgoings

The Gers will look to shape their squad for a new era in Philippe Clement's first summer in charge, with several individuals heading for the exit door on expiring contracts.

Various links have emerged as we approach the summer, and one exciting claim has suggested that the Scottish Premiership title contenders are expected to make a "number" of additions, following the release of the minutes from the CEO Fans' Forum with Creag Robertson: "A number of good conversations with active targets are underway.

"I cannot give any more detail right now. Ideally we would like to bring in players early, for the start of pre-season, although the Euros might slow the market slightly. Our intention is to be on the front foot and bring players in as early as we can, but we will need to remain agile to the market dynamics."

Abdallah Sima

A permanent move for Abdallah Sima is potentially being lined up, with Brighton happy to sell the Rangers loanee for good this summer, while young Krasnodar attacking midfielder Eduard Spertsyan is also a target, being seen as an upgrade on Tom Lawrence.

It looks as though John Lundstram's time at Ibrox is up, however, with a switch to Trabzonspor reportedly in place, and the likes of Borna Barisic and Kemar Roofe are also looking likely to move on, too.

Rangers eyeing young "sensation"

According to Football Insider's O'Rourke on X, Rangers are among the clubs interested in signing Raphael Borges Rodrigues this summer:

"Rangers and Coventry are tracking Australian sensation Raphael Borges Rodrigues from Macarthur FC. Swindon Town are also interested in the attacker with the club’s Australian owner Clem Morfuni alerted to Rodrigues’ potential."

In his article, O'Rourke claims that the teams in question are "readying moves" for the 20-year-old, who currently plays for Australian A-League side Macarthur.

Admittedly, Rodrigues isn't exactly a household name, considering he is plying his trade on the other side of the world, but it is clear that he is a highly-rated young player with a big ceiling. He has won three caps for Australia at youth team level – one for the Under-23s and two for the Under-20s – and a tally of six goals in 34 appearances for Macarthur is a solid return, considering what a young player he is.

Primarily a left-sided attacker, Rodrigues could arrive at Rangers as a strong squad player to start with, getting used to his surroundings and being used sporadically. The hope is that he reaches his potential over time, however, and gradually becomes a key man capable of providing genuine quality in the final third.

Rangers’ 10 best managers of all time ranked by win percentage

The Gers missed out on the league title in his first season, but where does Philippe Clement rank among his predecessors?

ByCharlie Smith Jan 4, 2025

Described in O'Rourke's report as an "eye-catching winger with quick feet and plenty of skills in his locker", he is the type of player who could get Gers supporters off their seats, not to mention helping fill the void left by the likely outgoing Roofe.
