Vinicius Jr. criticised for 'shush' celebrationAncelotti defended Brazilian winger Real Sociedad fans jeered at the Real Madrid starWHAT HAPPENED?

Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe were on target for Real Madrid as they beat Real Sociedad 2-0 in La Liga on Saturday. The Brazilian netted his second goal of the ongoing season as he broke the deadlock in the 58th minute from the penalty spot. Despite starring for Los Blancos in their victory, the winger received heavy criticism for his celebration as he was seen running towards the corner and doing a 'shush' gesture in an attempt to silence the home crowd.

Amid widespread disapproval of his celebration, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti came into the player's defence as the Italian felt that the attacker's action was prompted by the treatment that was meted out to him by the Real Sociedad fans. The home fans tried to get under the skin of the player from the early stages of the match, as whistles echoed around the stadium.

WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

Defending his player in front of the press, Ancelotti said, "It's a reaction to a very ugly action. Insults… nobody could stand it, I couldn't either. The gesture of putting one's hand to one's mouth is normal, given everything that is happening."

Derby made mistake signing goal-shy flop who’d cost £10m in 2024 money

Derby County's promotion celebrations at the full-time whistle against Carlisle United this weekend was an outpouring of emotion from everyone associated with the Rams, finally back up to the Championship after languishing in League One for two seasons.

Financial mismanagement had seen the usual promotion challengers up to the Premier League sink at an alarming rate all way down to the low depths of the third tier, with Wayne Rooney bravely taking on the reins as manager during this turbulent period to try and get the beaten group back on track.

Points deductions, however, made relegation down to the third tier feel horribly inevitable, with the club potentially going bust a major anxiety for a while.

Now, they'll look to stabilise in the Championship and not fall foul of any overspending like they did with this notable dud who joined in 2007 with a reputation for being a prolific talisman, only to flop at Pride Park.

Kenny Miller's transfer to Derby

Kenny Miller's lengthy career, up until his retirement in 2020, was predominantly spent in his native Scotland and for good reason when you look at the numbers he managed in front of goal playing in those surroundings.

Finishing his esteemed playing days at Patrick Thistle, Miller lined up for six different Scottish clubs in the end and managed to fire in a magnificent 96 Scottish Premiership strikes along the way.

Therefore, when Billy Davies' Derby signed Miller for £2.25m on the eve of stepping up to the Premier League after promotion, they must have anticipated that the lively and lethal Scotsman would be able to tear up the English top-flight as well.

The deal at the time must have felt like a risk worth taking, especially when you consider that the 5 foot 10 centre-forward bagged a respectable 61 goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers across a five-season stint at Molineux previously before relocating back to Scotland.

Yet, it proved to be a costly error for the Rams who were horrendous throughout the only season Miller donned Derby white, with their points total still the lowest in Premier League history to this day.

Miller's time at Derby

The now-retired 44-year-old striker will view his spell with Derby as a blot on his career resume, with this year at Pride Park meaning Miller – who is more used to lifting Scottish Premiership titles – has the anomaly of a relegation on his CV.

It also won't be a fondly remembered patch of his playing days owing to his ineffectiveness in bagging crucial goals, completely unable to give Derby any slither of hope that they could somehow move up from the very bottom of the division by being a forceful figure up top.

Miller would end up netting an unsatisfactory six goals in all competitions that season, with just one Premier League strike coming the usually deadly Scotsman's way from his last five painful months as a Ram.

Derby would have to make do with cutting their losses for Miller when Rangers swooped in to re-sign their former star when this season was up, losing £250k unfortunately in a deal that saw the underperformer return back to Ibrox for £2m.

It looked like a move that could work when Miller scored on his debut for the Rams, however, against Newcastle United, with that fantastic long-range effort from the one-time Rams number 14 handing his new side their only top-flight win that season.

Still, this career misstep wouldn't see Miller's confidence show visible signs of damage when he returned to play in the bread and butter of Scottish football after walking away from Pride Park.

Miller's deadliness in-front of goal would be instantly reignited under Ally McCoist's management at Rangers, with a staggering 49 goals managed from his next three campaigns in league action.

The Scotsman's poor spell in Derbyshire is made to look even worse when you consider how much this disastrous move would cost in today's inflated market, with the aid of TotallyFootball's Transfer Index adding to the misery of the Rams.

Miller's transfer value in 2024

If this same ill-fated move went through in 2024, Miller would have ended up costing Derby double the amount they originally forked out with his bumped-up value coming in at an excessive £10.3m.

That would make Miller the most expensive buy in Derby's history in a theoretical world as can be seen scanning the table below, only further reinforcing the Scotsman's status as a colossal flop at Pride Park.

1. Matej Vydra

£8m

2. Krystian Bielik

£7m

3. Bradley Johnson

£6.9m

4. Tom Ince

£5.7m

5. Martyn Waghorn

£4.7m

At least Matej Vydra justified his extortionate fee as a centre-forward for Derby as opposed to the wasteful ex-Rams number 14, with the current Viktoria Plzen striker notching up 27 strikes from 80 games in total.

Looking at the current Derby playing squad, Paul Warne and Co have succeeded by being frugal this season instead of splashing out ludicrous amounts of cash, with this approach no doubt going to be utilised once more even with the team moving up a division as it's worked wonders.

James Collins, who is Derby's top scorer in all competitions with 19 strikes this season, has a valuation of just £341k – according to Football Transfers – which rubber-stamps the notion that Warne's men were able to succeed this campaign with cheap stars over flashy and overpriced faces.

The ex-Luton Town attacker is 33 years of age and in danger of not having the legs for the battles to come in the Championship, but when seeking a replacement, the Rams will stray on the side of caution knowing they were let down by Miller once upon a time after the major move looked like it would be a fantastic deal for all involved.

Jason Holder's lean run continues as Phil Simmons rejoins squad

Holder XI 272 (Da Silva 133*) and 171 for 4 (Da Silva 56*) drew with Brathwaite XI 178 (Mayers 74*, Gabriel 4-42)West Indies captain Jason Holder underwhelmed with the bat once more as head coach Phil Simmons officially rejoined the team after his latest negative coronavirus test on the final day of their drawn intra-squad match. In a bid to get some time in the middle, Holder promoted himself to open the batting for the side he was leading against a Kraigg Brathwaite XI but the move backfired as he made just two off 15 deliveries.Holder’s cheap dismissal means he has made just seven runs and faced fewer than 30 balls in three innings across these two intra-squad matches ahead of the start of next week’s first Test against England at the Ageas Bowl. There was better news as Simmons rejoined the camp, having been self-isolating in his room at the team’s on-site hotel at Emirates Old Trafford after leaving the bubble to attend his father-in-law’s funeral.ALSO READ: Simmons is ‘right man at right time’ – CWI presidentHe has watched the majority of this rain-interrupted four-day game from his balcony but he presided over the warm-ups on Thursday after his third negative test for Covid-19.Before play, the Windies marked the passing of the great Sir Everton Weekes, who died on Wednesday aged 95, with a minute’s silence and wore black armbands when they took to the field under lights, which remained on all day.Less than an hour of play was possible on the last morning because of overnight rain as the Brathwaite XI advanced their position from 112 for 7 to 178 all out, with Shannon Gabriel taking 4 for 42.Gabriel will almost certainly be catapulted into the Test squad from the reserves list soon, and he ended the innings by disturbing the stumps of Chemar Holder, who broke his bat from the previous delivery.Kyle Mayers counter-attacked his way to 74 not out from 56 balls but he ran out of partners, with Alzarri Joseph pinning Marquino Mindley in front from the third ball of the day and Kemar Roach bowling Keon Harding. That gave the Holder XI a first-innings lead of 94, although at this stage getting under-cooked players middle practice seemed to take more of a priority than the result. That was emphasised when Holder strode out alongside Shayne Moseley to commence the second innings. The allrounder survived a couple of tight lbw shouts off Phillip, who had his man with a peach of a delivery. Holder shaped to leave but the ball swung back in at him and trimmed the off bail.Holder did at least bowl five overs last night, showing no discomfort after a recent ankle niggle, but while he struggled with the bat again, Jermaine Blackwood belatedly found some form.Hoping to earn a first Test start in nearly three years, Blackwood timed the ball nicely in his 43 from 48 balls, which was ended when he was bowled by Roston Chase’s first delivery of the match.ALSO READ: Batsmen need to look in the mirror – HolderBlackwood’s knock means most of the frontline batsmen currently in the Test squad have had at least one innings of substance across these two matches, and perhaps underlined the lack of urgency in a sleepy afternoon session. That continued after tea as the spin of Chase and Rahkeem Cornwall operated at either end. Cornwall accounted for Nkrumah Bonner, who departed three short of 50 after misreading a straight one and edging to slip.First-innings centurion Joshua Da Silva picked up where he left off, following up his unbeaten century with 56 not out as he took his tally in the match to 189 runs without dismissal. It is unlikely to elevate him from the reserves but if there is an injury over the next few days, then he is well placed to be called up after helping his side to 170 for 4 and a lead of 264 when an early finish was agreed.

Howe hit gold ditching Newcastle man who’s now worth 10x less than Targett

Newcastle United have enjoyed success from developing players from within their academy during the 2023/24 campaign.

Players such as Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley have broken into Eddie Howe’s first team and taken full advantage of the club’s injury situation – giving the boss a selection headache when all players are available at the start of next season.

Miley in particular has impressed, racking up 17 Premier League appearances over the last couple of months, while even scoring his first professional goal in the 3-0 win over Fulham.

Despite his tender age of just 18, he’s slotted straight into the Magpies squad, looking at home at St James’ Park despite his lack of experience at the top level.

He has the potential to star in the club’s midfield for many years to come, potentially being the pioneer in their efforts to challenge for a Premier League title again in the near future.

However, just a couple of years ago, many Newcastle supporters would’ve thought that one player could’ve been the future of the club, especially given his impact on his first-team debut, but he’s endured a huge drop in recent years, with Howe making the right decision by letting him leave Tyneside for pastures new.

Matty Longstaff’s stats at Newcastle United

After joining the club at the age of ten, midfielder Matty Longstaff quietly progressed through the club’s academy system, before getting his big opportunity in the senior side back in 2019.

At the age of 18, he made his Premier League debut against Manchester United, scoring a brilliant strike from outside the box, winning the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award in the process.

Longstaff would also bag his second goal for his boyhood club in the return fixture against the same opponents at Old Trafford, but unfortunately, that was as good as it got for the youngster at St James’ Park.

The promising midfielder only managed a total of 20 appearances for the club but enjoyed a successful loan stint at Mansfield Town before a serious knee injury prevented him from having any further impact on Tyneside.

The huge investment from the Saudi PIF undoubtedly restricted the youngster from any further first-team action, with the ace no longer up to the level required following the signings of players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock.

He would leave the Magpies upon the expiration of his deal at the end of 2023/24, but agreed to an early termination in order for him to move to Toronto FC in the MLS.

Matty Longstaff’s market value in 2024

Nearly five years on from his Magpies debut, the now 24-year-old has suffered a dramatic drop in his market value, unsurprisingly given his downfall over the past couple of years.

According to Transfermarkt, Longstaff is now only valued at a measly £800k, a huge drop from his market high of £4.2m back in 2021.

His subsequent figure is now over ten times lower than Magpies outcast Matt Targett, who still boasts a market value of £8.5m, despite not featuring for Howe’s side since the 2-2 draw against West Ham United back in October 2023.

It’s unfortunate to see Longstaff’s huge drop since his debut for the club a handful of years ago – with the one-time wonderkid having real potential to be a long-term talent alongside his brother Sean in Newcastle’s midfield.

However, it’s good to see him have a new settled home, where hopefully he can recapture his form and rebuild in order to reach the potential a lot of supporters once thought he had on Tyneside.

Ratcliffe must banish Man Utd ace who’s worth 12x less than McTominay

It’s a well-known fact that Manchester United’s season has been appalling, yet despite the underperformance of some individuals, others have actually progressed.

One of those is Scott McTominay, who has been the hero on many occasions over his 31 Premier League appearances this campaign.

The Scott had scored a handful of crucial goals, and unless he finds the back of the net at the weekend, he will boast a tally of seven for the league season.

Due to the academy graduate’s clutch performances, he’s now become one of the most valuable assets at the club, unlike one player who’s inevitably packing his bags this summer.

Christian Eriksen’s first season at Man United

When Christian Eriksen first joined Man United at the start of Erik ten Hag’s reign, he was regarded as one of the bargains of the summer due to his arrival being a free transfer.

The Denmark international was instantly a hit, with football creator Liam Canning describing the deal as a “quality bit of business” while also stating that Eriksen was “absolutely pivotal.”

Ten Hag also shared a similar viewpoint, fielding the former Tottenham Hotspur star 28 times in the league over the campaign, mainly in a slightly deeper role alongside Casemiro.

During those matches, United’s number 14 netted just once, but he was a great source of creativity, providing eight assists, the joint-most that campaign in the squad.

Unfortunately, an injury at the end of January hindered his progress, and he’s not been able to reach similar heights since.

What Christian Eriksen is worth in 2024

This term, Eriksen also began the campaign in the first eleven after an injury to Mason Mount, scoring and assisting in his first two starts against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, which are still his only league contributions this season.

But as time went by, his involvement in the side plummeted, with an injury and the rise of Kobbie Mainoo keeping him on the sidelines for a long spell.

Christian Eriksen

During the entire month of February, the experienced technician didn’t start a single game, sitting on the bench without getting a solitary minute in five straight matches.

Overall this term, the 32-year-old has only started 12 matches in the league, which has played a huge role in his current market value dropping to just £4m, according to CIES’ Football Observatory.

This now means that Eriksen is the lowest-valued midfielder in the current United team and worth 12 times less than McTominay, for example, which is rather mind-blowing.

Sadly, given his age and declining athleticism – hence why Canning recently named him a “passenger" – Eriksen’s value is extremely unlikely to take an upward trajectory.

Furthermore, according to Capology, the ex-Brentford ace has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly keen to sell him this summer before he leaves on a free.

Overall, the Dane has become surplus to requirements at United, and that’s only set to worsen ahead of next season when Mount returns and the transfer market concludes.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is now 39 years of age, with another landmark birthday set to be reached in February 2025, but he is showing no sign of slowing down. He found the target on 50 occasions in Saudi Arabia last season and has already been back among the goals this term.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Frustration was endured by the all-time great at Euro 2024, as he failed to hit the net in open play at that tournament, but he was back doing what he does best in a UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia – taking him to 900 competitive efforts in total across a remarkable career.

  • WHAT RONALDO SAID

The record books continue to be rewritten by Ronaldo, who now has 131 international goals to his name through 213 appearances, but he is not done yet. The evergreen forward has posted on social media of hitting targets in the present, while taking aim at more in the future: “I dreamed of this, and I have more dreams. Thank you all!”

Governing Council meeting on August 1 likely to finalise IPL 2020 schedule

Other matters up for discussion are venues, training facilities and quarantine measures against Covid-19

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Jul-2020The IPL Governing Council will meet on August 1 to finalise the schedule and other key arrangements necessary for the tournament to be conducted in the UAE. Recently the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel announced the tournament would be played in the UAE between September 19 and November 10.It is understood that the Governing Council is likely to discuss the dates, venues, training facilities, the quarantine measures along with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that would be necessary for the event which comprises eight teams to play 60 matches over 50 days.Other than Patel, the meeting would also be attended by the BCCI’s office bearers including president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal. Incidentally, both Ganguly and Shah have finished their six-year tenures as office bearers and are supposed to undergo a three-year cooling-off period as per the BCCI constitution. However, the BCCI has sought amendments to the constitution including tweaking the cooling-off period in a plea with the Supreme Court, which has scheduled the hearing for August 17.Earlier on Monday, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) said that it had received a letter of intent from the BCCI to conduct the IPL in the UAE. That letter is understood to be signed by IPL’s chief operating officer Hemang Amin, who also is doubling up as the BCCI’s interim chief executive officer. The ECB said it was looking forward to hosting the IPL, but a “final deal” would be inked after the Indian government had given BCCI the permission to shift the tournament to the UAE.

Arsenal player ratings vs Atalanta: David Raya produces heroics to earn Champions League point as Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus misfire

The Spain shot-stopper produced a remarkable double-save to keep out Mateo Retegui in what proved to be the key moment in Thursday's stalemate

Arsenal were indebted to David Raya as the goalkeeper again produced heroics to help secure a 0-0 draw with Atalanta in the Gunners' opening game of the Champions League season in Bergamo.

Mikel Arteta's side had the better of the few chances that were created during the first half as Bukayo Saka had a free-kick saved by Marco Carnesecchi before Gabriel Martinelli spooned an effort from the edge of the box over the bar.

The home side were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second period, however, as Thomas Partey tripped Ederson inside the area, only for Raya to deny Mateo Retegui both from the penalty spot and, unbelievably, as the striker looked to head in the rebound from close-range.

Both sides had further opportunities to break the deadlock, as Juan Cuadrado twice curled shots narrowly off target before Martinelli wasted a great chance after being played in behind by substitute Raheem Sterling. In the end, however, neither team could find a breakthrough and were made to settle for a point.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the Gewiss Stadium…

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

David Raya (8/10):

Barely tested until the penalty, but stood up for his team when it counted with a remarkable double-save. The second stop from Retegui was even better than the one the Spaniard pulled off to deny Ollie Watkins a few weeks ago.

Ben White (6/10):

Kept Lookman pretty quiet down the Atalanta left. Unable to offer much in attack, however.

William Saliba (8/10):

A human shield, the France international repelled everything that came his way with ease. Superb late tackle denied Lookman when clean through.

Gabriel Magalhaes (8/10):

Ensured Retegui didn't get a sight of goal from open play as he regularly outmuscled the Italy striker. A colossus.

Jurrien Timber (6/10):

Neat and tidy in possession without ever offering any kind of incisive passing. A little suspect defensively at times.

AdvertisementAFPMidfield

Kai Havertz (5/10):

A performance more akin to what Havertz offered in the first half of last season before he was moved further forward. Wasn't afraid to put himself about physically, though.

Thomas Partey (4/10):

Overrun at times and was clumsy in bringing down Ederson for the penalty. Replaced not long after the spot-kick.

Declan Rice (6/10):

Covered every blade of grass without ever imposing himself on the game. Best moments came when he made some key defensive interventions.

Getty Images SportAttack

Bukayo Saka (6/10):

Tested Carnesecchi with a clever first-half free-kick, but Arsenal couldn't get him in the game nearly enough. Did look a threat on the rare occasion he got into dangerous areas.

Gabriel Jesus (3/10):

Handed his first start of the season but looked very rusty. Some of his touches were heavy and he never truly got up to the speed of the game before being replaced early in the second half.

Gabriel Martinelli (2/10):

Continues to look a shadow of the player who was tearing defences apart this time last season. Wasted one decent shooting position in the first half before missing an even better chance after the break.

Jorginho (6/10):

Added some stability to the midfield after replacing the tiring Partey.

Leandro Trossard (5/10):

Struggled to offer much as a central striker after coming on for Jesus.

Riccardo Calafiori (6/10):

Returned from injury to play the final 20 minutes in his homeland.

Raheem Sterling (6/10):

Instantly created a chance for Martinelli but struggled to get in the game thereafter.

Mikel Arteta (6/10):

Will be satisfied with a point. Prospect of facing Manchester City in three days' time meant key players had to be taken off earlier than he might have otherwise liked, but at least his side came away with no more injuries to worry about.
