Rangers now close to signing £3m defender after talks with Philippe Clement

Rangers appear to be closing in on the signing of a player dubbed the "best defender in his league", according to a fresh transfer update regarding talks with manager Philippe Clement.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers are still smarting after their 2-1 defeat away to Celtic on Saturday, in a result that effectively left their Scottish Premiership title chances in tatters. This has still been a positive season overall, however, with League Cup glory already achieved and a Scottish Cup final against the Hoops to come later this month.

This summer could be an exciting one in the transfer market at Ibrox, even though failing to qualify for the Champions League is a negative in a financial sense. One player who has been linked with a move to Rangers is defender Jose Cordoba, who is currently plying his trade with Levski Sofia in the Bulgarian First League.

West Ham ace Ben Johnson could also arrive at the Gers on a free transfer once his deal at the London Stadium expires this summer, following a season that has seen the 24-year-old feature 14 times in the Premier League. Only four of those have been starts, though, which is why a new challenge is likely to appeal to him.

Meanwhile, Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is a boyhood Rangers supporter who has enjoyed a fantastic season, and a switch to Ibrox continues to be mooted. He could be considered an upgrade on Cyriel Dessers, topping the Scottish Premiership scoring charts this season with 22 goals.

Ranger target holds talks with Clement

According to The Daily Record's print edition on Tuesday [via Ibrox News], Cordoba has now held talks with Rangers boss Clement over a move to Ibrox this summer, in what is a significant development.

It is claimed that the 22-year-old "seems certain" to complete a move to the Gers at the end of the season, in what could prove to be the club's first piece of transfer business this summer for a fee in the region of £3m.

Cordoba is edging closer to becoming a Rangers player all the time, in what could be such an eye-catching addition to Clement's squad. The fact that the manager has spoken to him suggests that he sees him as an ideal target, too.

Meanwhile, journalist Jose Miguel Dominquez has hailed the youngster as the "best defender in his league", which speaks volumes about his performance this season, even if he isn't necessarily playing in one of Europe's top divisions.

Centre-back additions are needed at Rangers this summer, with Connor Goldson now 31 years of age and not representing the long-term future at Ibrox, and 35-year-old Leon Balogun out of contract in the summer.

Cordoba could herald the start of a new era at the heart of the Gers' defence, with his best years still ahead of him, and 10 caps coming his way for Panama at international level outlining his pedigree as a player further.

Mel Jones: Need to be 'more strategically smart' about scheduling women's domestic competitions

The women’s game needs to ensure there is clear communication and a smarter approach to scheduling in the future to avoid clashes of domestic competitions such as the WBBL and the Women’s T20 Challenge, according to former Australia player and now CA board director Mel Jones.CA hopes that the doubling up of two major women’s domestic events which will occur in November is a one-off scenario created by the huge challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, but beyond that there will need to be clear planning both domestically and internationally amid “massive concerns” that the women’s game could be left behind in the resumption of sport. With the T20 Challenge overlapping with the WBBL it means that India players won’t be able to appear in Australia this year, just six months after they played a starring role at the T20 World Cup, and on the flip side the likes of Alyssa Healy, who has been very outspoken on the topic, will not be able to feature in Indian competition for the second year running following last year’s stand-off between CA and the BCCI.ALSO READ: Alyssa Healy: ‘There’s no need for domestic competitions to clash in the women’s game’ “Who’d have thought maybe five years ago that I’d be pulling my hair out that women’s domestic competitions are clashing and we can’t get players from around the world,” Jones said. “It’s a great space to be in. In some ways it has been a bit of a rush and everyone is so excited about what they can do that sometimes the communication has been missed a little bit.”But what it has done is open up a few more doors and say let’s be a little bit more strategically smart about the way we are running our domestic competitions so we can see a free flow of players around the world.””From my perspective I’m rapt in the sense the Challenge was still on and giving a pathway for young Indian players to come through because we want to see young Indian players get better and better because it makes world cricket better as well. For this once off it’s not ideal in the sense it clashes with the WBBL and we’d love to see the Indian players here but moving forward we’ll have the clear windows for our players to go there and their players to come here.”The natural split for the major women’s domestic events would be the WBBL in October-November, the T20 Challenge in April or May and the Hundred in England during their summer months. CA are committed to staging a full WBBL in October and November this year with the likelihood it will be in a single-state hub”Australia should be very proud of the WBBL as being the preeminent domestic league in the world,” Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia interim CEO said. “This year is an atypical year with everything going on. The reality is you have the whole IPL infrastructure in Dubai. Hopefully it’s a one-year anomaly given a lot has been disrupted this year. Going forward, [it would be] fantastic to have the likes of Harmanpreet play in the WBBL.”Alyssa Healy was a part of the Women’s T20 Challenge match in 2018•BCCI

Top-level international cricket is set to resume with England-West Indies in September followed by Australia-New Zealand a few days later. CA remains hopeful that India will still tour in mid-January for a one-day series while talks are ongoing with New Zealand Cricket for matches in the space created by the World Cup postponement.ALSO READ: Alyssa Healy: ‘Opportunity to play four big events in 2022 daunting but also exciting’“There is a massive concern, without a doubt,” Jones said about the impact of the pandemic. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a few chats with the ICC in the last week just about that. It’s not to say people don’t have it in the forefront of their minds. The fact they postponed next year’s World Cup was a huge blow to them.”They’re mindful of that, and they’re trying to figure out ways how we can be a little bit smarter and collectively work together to make things easier. It’s an issue across global sport but I think we’ve got enough cricket brains at the table to make sure we can at least take advantage of as many opportunities as we can the next 12 months.”The Under-19s is something we’ve been pushing for for many years. It will be critical for us, but it might be one that unfortunately for the moment will have to take a bit of a pause to work out where it fits in but also so the nations providing those teams can send teams.”Jones and Hockley were speaking around the release of Cricket Australia’s third Press For Progress report which documents their aspiration to become Australia’s leading sport for women and girls. On the back of the record-breaking T20 World Cup and the first standalone WBBL, Hockley said the 2019-2020 season was “undoubtedly the greatest year for the women’s elite game in Australia.”Among key outcomes in the report were that representation on boards reached 32% – the first time it has passed 30% – and more than 1,600 all-girls cricket teams have been created in the past three years, with women and girls representing 32% of all participation for the first time. The Australia team had also previously been named the country’s most loved sports team. However, the introduction to the report emphasised the challenges ahead: “The highs of the past year were quickly followed by significant lows as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic spread globally. This once-in-a-century event is being felt throughout our game…with all sports impacted to varying degree, we call on our peers to join Australian Cricket in publicly sharing their commitment to create better opportunities for women and girls in sport. Now is not the time to revert to ways of old.”

The Gunners, who have emerged as the Cityzens' top title challengers in the past couple of seasons, will wrap up their September schedule with a Carabao Cup clash against Bolton and a home game against Leicester City in the Premier League.

Aston Villa could sign Luiz heir in "frightening" Gallagher alternative

Aston Villa will be desperate to keep hold of Douglas Luiz this summer after the 26-year-old played a standout role in securing Champions League football with a top-four Premier League finish.

The Brazilian has grown into one of English football's most talented and robust central midfielders over the past few years and perhaps it's only natural that the vultures have started circling.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are all watching Luiz, though it is Juventus who currently hold the lead in the race to sign the Villan, so CalcioMercato state.

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

Unai Emery will be determined to keep his star, but should he leave, an exciting and talented prospect has already been identified.

Aston Villa eyeing Douglas Luiz replacement

According to Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Aston Villa have received a huge boost in their bid to sign Schalke's Assan Ouedraogo, with Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich deciding not to sign their long-time top target.

Ouedraogo has a £12m release clause in his contract but it must be activated by a certain point in June, and thus Emery will need to decide quickly to move ahead in the race and secure a talented new cog for the machine.

It would appear as though the midfield is a key area of focus this summer. Ross Barkley is set to sine while the Villans are also particularly keen on adding Conor Gallagher to their ranks, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

Ouedraogo, however, could prove to be a fine alternative to the Chelsea and England star.

Why Villa are interested in Assan Ouedraogo

Schalke finished tenth in the German Bundesliga 2. as their dramatic decline continues, though there's no question that Ouedraogo, who is 18 years old, remains the shining light of their demise – lauded as "frightening" by data analyst Ben Mattinson…

The German midfielder is imposing and athletically blessed, and while at a glance he might appear a defensive midfielder, he is actually far more dynamic, making loping runs across the centre of the park to progress the play and find openings for his teammates.

In the league this term, as per Sofascore, Ouedraogo only featured 17 times and started on just nine of those occasions, but he did score three goals and supply one assist, invariably impressing with his youthful avidity.

It's also important to note that he spent a large portion of the campaign on the sidelines with a syndesmotic ligament tear, precluding his chances of enjoying the breakout year fitting for a prospect of his calibre.

He also averaged 1.8 dribbles and 4.3 successful duels per match, advertising budding ball-carrying expertise and a combative approach to his football that is something inborn. He is tenacious and that core quality lies at the centre of his style.

As per FBref, the teenager ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across divisions similar to the Bundesliga 2. for goals scored and successful take-ons and the top 12% for shot-creating actions and progressive carries per 90.

His prodigious strength and technical quality suggest that he has all the tools to become a leading figure in the Premier League, and he would certainly find the perfect foundation to build from at Villa Park.

How Ouedraogo compares to Douglas Luiz

Moreover, he really does offer the perfect mould to succeed Luiz, who posted ten goals and ten assists across all competitions this season and is also a complete and expressive midfielder sometimes pigeonholed as a defensive midfielder. This is not the case.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

He ranks among the top 16% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 17% for shot-creating actions and the top 20% for passes attempted per 90.

Luiz is certainly a player with sharp and effective qualities at the base of the engine room but he is also a crisp and inventive distributor, a commanding leader and an intelligent orchestrator when his team surges forward en masse.

Clearly, when examining Luiz's metrics from the recently concluded campaign, it's hardly a bold call to suggest that Ouedraogo has some work to do before he is performing at the Aston Villa stalwart's level, but the Schalke star is scarcely into adulthood and has so much potential.

Having only started nine fixtures in the German second division this season, he wouldn't arrive in England's West Midlands with the expectation to tear a path right through to the upper echelon of Emery's talented squad, but he could be moulded into such a phenom over the course of several years – impressing right through.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Scout Jacek Kulig dubbed Ouedraogo a "talented" young player, though perhaps that is a colossal understatement. Here is a player with the signs of something special, rooting his name in an auspicious light throughout this maiden stage in stark contrast to that of his outfit.

But it's clear that to maximise his lofty potential, he must now search for pastures new. Villa, now that Bayern are out of proceedings, will be confident that they can hand him that launchpad.

Slot can repeat Mane masterclass as Liverpool eye £50m machine

Today is a new beginning. Today is the day that Arne Slot gets to work as Liverpool's new head coach.

The saddening departure of Jurgen Klopp not two weeks ago, when he led his side to one final dance against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, is still fresh in supporters' minds but hard graft must be plied over the coming months to set Anfield up for a successful start to a new era.

With Michael Edwards pulling the strings from above, Slot can focus on energising his squad and preparing for the 2024/25 campaign, but there is plenty to do on the transfer front, not least ensuring that core trio Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah – all out of contract in one year – do not leave.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

However, there are further potential exits on the cards, with Barcelona's lingering interest in Luis Diaz something that could be granted on Merseyside if an apt replacement was identified.

While he might not be a left-sided wide forward by default, Liverpool are looking to sign a talented Premier League star and could make their move if certain cards come into play in the coming weeks and months.

Liverpool lining up Premier League star

According to L'Equipe, Liverpool are indeed on the prowl for a new wide forward and have focussed their efforts on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, aged 24, with the French-born ace ready to take the next step in his career.

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo

The Bees would demand a fee in excess of £50m for Mbeumo, who has played a starring role in keeping the club in the English top flight for three successive seasons, though a deal is complicated by interest in his strike partner Ivan Toney.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested, though Slot will hope that his team's exciting project and allure of Champions League football will put Liverpool in the driving seat.

Bryan Mbeumo's season in numbers

Unfortunately, Mbeumo's incredible start to the season was stifled by injury in December, with the 5 foot 7 whiz missing three months through the middle period of the campaign after injuring his ankle and requiring surgery.

The 11-cap Cameroon international, who opted to play for the African nation due to familial ties, had fired his way into form during the opening months of the 2023/24 season, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists across 15 games before his mishap.

The Athletic's Jay Harris had even remarked that he “cannot be stopped” during this Midas-touching period. Let's not forget, supreme goalscorer Toney was suspended until January but this did not stop Mbeumo from succeeding, perhaps even allowing him to showcase his talismanic ability to a greater level.

As per Sofascore, Mbeumo scored nine goals and provided six assists from only 22 starting roles in the Premier League, creating six big chances and averaging 1.3 key passes, one dribble, 4.2 successful duels and 3.7 ball recoveries per game.

Not just a goalscorer, Mbeumo possesses creative, ball-progressing and defensive skills that make him a fearsome weapon in the Premier League, ranking among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and shot-creating actions, the top 5% for passes attempted, the top 7% for progressive passes and progressive carries and the top 5% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

Mbeumo's FBref metrics underscore a roundedness and dynamism in his approach play that enhances his team and puts him above that of just 'goalscorer'. Instead, this is a player with far-reaching skills that would make him a tailor-made addition to Liverpool.

Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo, and Rico Henry

Moreover, this is illustrated through the £45k-per-week star's influence when performing, making Brentford a far better, more fluid and more effective unit. It's no wonder that Thomas Frank has hailed him as "very sharp".

Why Bryan Mbeumo would star at Liverpool

Slot's system, while not yet implemented on the Anfield pitch, is likely to demonstrate a fast-flowing, possession-based blend, with Dutch reporter Marcel van der Kraan recently praising the "crazy, sexy style".

A semblance of high-octane football can be found in Slot's system, but he is not a carbon copy of his Liverpool predecessor and his focus on control is something that makes Mbeumo such an interesting prospective arrival, with the Brentford man's aforementioned ball skills perfectly placed for success on the right flank, or upfront.

His technical prowess and the fact that he could be signed, aged 24, from a Premier League rival performing lower down the table – Brentford finished 16th this season – could make him Slot's own version of Sadio Mane, with the Senegalese forward instrumental in kickstarting Klopp's reign.

Firstly, Mane's positional versatility made him an invaluable striker for Liverpool, and so too is Mbeumo free of the shackles of tactical inflexibility, scoring four goals and adding one assist from nine matches from centre-forward this season but clinching five goals and five assists apiece from 14 matches on the right.

Furthermore, Mane's goalscoring ability made him the perfect fit after signing from Southampton in a £34m deal in 2016, posting 120 strikes from 269 appearances for the Reds.

Fleet of foot, positively electric and invariably sharp, Mane might not have maintained the same prolific levels of his alternate wide-man Salah, but he was so impressive in an iconic Premier League frontline, embodying Liverpool's approach of shaping talented players into world-beaters, instead of launching ludicrous sums for those already performing at the top of their game.

Mbeumo is itching for a chance to prove himself for a team at the top of the European game, and while he's got plenty to prove, Slot might just hit the jackpot in signing him, replicating Klopp's Mane masterclass and starting his tenure with a bang.

This would be a frustrating start for Slot.

India's 2020-21 domestic season might extend until June next year

The BCCI is attempting to prioritise the Ranji Trophy in what could be a tweaked format

Whether any domestic cricket takes place in India this season remains to be seen•Hindustan Times via Getty Images

It looks increasingly likely that India’s upcoming domestic season – which doesn’t have a start date yet – could extend until June next year, with the BCCI’s attempts to host the Ranji Trophy “a priority” and “at least one major tournament for women and at every age-group level” on the cards.”We are trying to get as much of the domestic season in as possible. It’s obviously impossible to start right away, and there’s also the matter of the IPL going to UAE. But we are trying to get a schedule in place,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. “We will not be able to have everything this year, and we will only be able to start in November maybe. But the idea is to have a priority list of tournaments, and the Ranji Trophy is right on top of that list.”Whether we hold it in its current form or a truncated version, we don’t know yet. We don’t even know how much of a window we will have. That will depend on when we can start and till when we can go on, if we have the next IPL on schedule in April-May.”A total of 2036 games, across various age groups in the men’s and women’s categories, were played during the 2019-20 season. In normal circumstances, the season would have started in July-August and run till around March. Since there won’t be that much time this year, the BCCI is trying to work out a tweaked format, especially for the Ranji Trophy.ESPNcricinfo understands that one of the options being considered is a zonal format. It could be that one city in each zone, which can provide three or four decent venues, might become the centre of all the action; but even then, it all remains “totally fluid”. That aside, with Covid-19 numbers on the rise, the availability of hotels and much else is a worry. “It’s impossible to confirm anything till we know all these things,” the BCCI official said.ALSO READ: India women’s England tour cancellation ‘not a case of neglect’ – Shanta RangaswamyThat the domestic schedule could go completely haywire or could feature only a fraction of the regular number of games, was also a possibility.”Hopefully, if we’re able to find a level of cure or vaccine even towards the end of the year, we’ll be in a position to be able to complete, even if not the whole domestic season, but large parts of it,” Rahul Dravid, the National Cricket Academy boss, had said in a webinar hosted by on Friday. “Obviously prioritising what that would be is important so that young boys and girls don’t miss out on cricket for a year.”The next domestic season, for a lot of our young domestic players – juniors, Under-16s, Under-19s and women cricketers – start in October. If we aren’t able to get back to a level of normalcy from then – it could take longer – we’ll see the real impact on our domestic cricket and grassroots cricket.”ESPNcricinfo also spoke to a number of state associations and all of them confirmed that they are yet to hear from the BCCI. It might be relatively easier to have the women’s tournaments and the age-group tournaments, as they don’t clash with the IPL quite as much as the senior men’s events.Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, said on Sunday that the Women’s T20 Challenge, which takes place during the men’s IPL “is very much on” for 2020. And even if there is another such event next year, during the 2021 IPL, the BCCI official ESPNcricinfo spoke to said, “the women’s domestic schedule might be a little easier to organise, because we will have the IPL 2021 window to use, that’s a two-month window almost”.

There were reports prior to the game that Ten Hag would be sacked whatever the result against the Premier League winners, however, there have since been claims that the Dutchman still has the backing of a number of prominent figures behind the scenes at Old Trafford who are keen for Ten Hag to stay.

Speculation elsewhere have stated that Ten Hag is still likely to be sacked, with Ratcliffe and INEOS expected to go through an end of season review.

Should United be on the lookout for a new manager, then England boss Gareth Southgate is one target who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester.

Earlier this month, speaking to Richard Keys on beIN, former Liverpool player Jason McAteer claimed that a current Manchester United player believed Ten Hag is "done" at Old Trafford and Southgate will be Man Utd's new manager.

"He plays for Man United and I had a conversation with him on Friday, I bumped into him because I live just outside the area.

"We got into conversation, great lad, and I asked him (about the) end of the season and what he thought and he gave me no inclination that the manager was there to stay. In fact we spoke about different names and who we thought will be a good fit and I got no inclination from him."

McAteer added that the player in question "smiled but that wasn't the name" when asked about Tuchel, and gave a "no" regarding Jose Mourinho, before saying "yes that was the name" when bringing up Southgate. Now, a new update has emerged on the 53-year-old.

Could he be making his way to Old Trafford this summer?

ByBen Browning May 28, 2024 Man Utd want Gareth Southgate “more than anyone else”

Talking to Sky Sports’ Back Pages Podcast, relayed by The Boot Room, journalist Miguel Delaney said that the Red Devils want Southgate “more than anyone else” but described it as a “very difficult” deal to do this summer due to England being in EURO 2024.

“As regards to INEOS’ decision, obviously it is complicated by the FA Cup final win, as well as the sentiment of the fans and I think another complication is the market. From what I’ve repeatedly heard, the figure they wanted more than anyone else is Southgate, or certainly some of the key figures in INEOS want Southgate, but that’s obviously very difficult this summer.

“So that again lends another layer to this, but it’s interesting if they do, I think it would go against what INEOS are supposed to bring to the club from the football department, if they were guided by the FA Cup Final, because all of this is supposed to be very kind of cold-headed, sophisticated approaches where you look to the long term, and not be guided by emotion in that way. If they did stick with him, it would kind of remind me of giving Solskjaer the job in 2019.”

Southgate’s full focus is on the European Championships with the Three Lions, and should they reach the final, Ratcliffe and co may need to wait until the middle of July until they can talk to him over a possible Old Trafford move.

That would be around a month before the 2024/25 season gets underway, which could be a big risk in regards to putting plans in place and working in pre-season with the United squad.
