Neser recalled for New Zealand tour, Renshaw retains reserve batting spot

Lance Morris picked up a side strain against West Indies but would not have made the squad

Is Matt Renshaw still the next Test batter in line?

Michael Neser has been recalled to Australia’s Test squad for the tour of New Zealand with the selectors taking a horses-for-courses approach based on conditions they expect across the Tasman in what is otherwise a very settled group for the two-match series.Neser has often been around the Australia set-up in recent years and was part of the World Test Championship final squad last year. His two Tests have both come in Adelaide – against England in 2021-22 and West Indies the following season. His Sheffield Shield numbers are significantly down this season with nine wickets at 50.33 but he is viewed as an ideal bowler for New Zealand while his ever-improving batting adds another element.”It’s great to see Michael Neser get another opportunity in the squad following his ever-consistent performances over a long period of time and the conditions we expect,” national selector George Bailey said.Related

Mitchell ruled out of second South Africa Test and Australia T20Is

Lance Morris picked up a side strain during the third ODI against West Indies in Canberra, but Bailey indicated he would not have made the trip as back up to Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The expectation is that those three will play both Tests against New Zealand – along with Nathan Lyon making it seven Tests in a row for the frontline bowlers – but Neser and Scott Boland will provide the support.”We’d be looking at a different type of fast bowler,” Bailey said. “The luxury of this tour only being in New Zealand, it’s not a massive trip, so a number of players in specific roles that if we do need to get them across that it’s not too much of a challenge, so Lance would have been in that boat.”The new-look batting order that came together against West Indies, with Steven Smith opening and Cameron Green at No. 4, will be given at least two more matches to settle in. After the New Zealand tour Australia have a long gap in Test cricket before the arrival of India for next summer’s five-match home series.ESPNcricinfo LtdMatt Renshaw has retained his spot as the reserve batter having been earmarked as the next in line amid the reshuffle that followed David Warner’s retirement. The overall squad is relatively small at 14 names with the short flight between the two countries meaning replacements could come in reasonably easily. However, it could leave Australia a little exposed if an injury occurred shortly before a match or in the event of a concussion during a game especially around the wicketkeeper or spin bowler with no direct cover for Alex Carey or Nathan Lyon.New Zealand are currently top of the World Test Championship following their opening victory over South Africa and will expect to consolidate that in Hamilton. The upcoming tour has grown in significance for Australia have they lost to West Indies at the Gabba.”As we know every Test match provides vital opportunities to obtain valuable WTC points and we expect this tour will be a tough challenge against a very strong side who have been so consistent at home for a long period of time,” Bailey said. The first Test begins in Wellington on February 29 followed by the second in Christchurch on March 8.

'I back myself against any player' – USMNT star Auston Trusty embraces Champions League challenge with Celtic FC

The USMNT defender has opened up about his experience competing in the Champions League with the Bhoys, expressing confidence in his abilities

U.S. international Auston Trusty says he’s loved every second of Champions League football since joining Celtic from Sheffield United in August 2024. The 26-year-old American defender believes his time in the Premier League and Championship prepared him well for facing top-tier opposition.

“I love every second. I mean I back myself against any player really," Trusty said on with Herculez Gomez. "Come out here playing the Premier League, now playing in the Champions League, you have to have your ability, you have to have the ability to back yourself mentally as well. Any chance I get to play with these guys and to play against these historic teams, I always go back to me as a little kid growing up, and just like this was not even reality, really!

“Like this was this wasn't even like possible for me to be here, living my dream day in day out be where I am at, where I'm at mentally and also physically, and it goes like wise as a player. I'm just, I'm living my life. I'm living my dream, man.”

Trusty shared that the confidence in his abilities has been there since he was a little kid, just starting to play football, and while he’s been through ups and downs, he continues to back himself.

“I don't think it starts there,” Trusty explained. “I think it started since I was a little kid, all the opportunities…There are plenty of ups and downs. And I think through those moments through those times, I've slowly layered by layer of the layer, backing myself and showing myself my ability.”

AdvertisementWHAT AUSTON TRUSTY SAID

Trusty wasn’t included on the U.S. men’s national team roster for the 2025 Gold Cup, but the Celtic center-back has remained supportive of the program and believes the tournament was a valuable learning experience for the group.

Trusty further touched upon the USMNT’s Gold Cup summer and believes that while the team initially had a tough run, he thinks that they’ve learnt a lot and that the blocks are in place.

“Obviously, I would love to go and represent the country,” Trusty said. “That's my entire dream. Any call up I can get, I'll be eager to take full advantage…I back coach back the team and obviously, you had some bad results. No one wants these results, but I think the team is just learning.

He added, “Some of those guys were key guys who have been on the team in the past, and they brought in some new people. So we’re just finding our way, but I think we do have time. I think on the outside, it seems like, ‘oh, what's going on?’ But I think Poch really has a good idea what's going to happen, and he's still like building the blocks, but I think we’re in a good spot.”

The center back also praised Pochettino for the tactical knowledge he’s brought to the setup, reflecting on his own experience in early camps under the Argentine.

“He called me in the first couple of camps, it was great, they were great. And I haven’t had too much conversations [or been] in touch since then, but it's all good standing…I think the coaches have been really good and obviously they're highly qualified and experienced too," he said. “Poch is an extremely experienced coach, so you know he knows what he’s talking about, so to be in those environments, to put yourself in that environment to maybe adapt to doing certain things or do things, maybe, maybe you’re not used to doing, it only benefits yourself. So I've only looked at that in a really positive way."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Trusty signed for Celtic in the summer of 2024 and has since made 38 appearances for , scoring one goal and winning the Scottish Championship as well as the Scottish League Cup in his debut season. Not only that, he has earned four caps for the USMNT, making his debut in March 2023, with his last cap coming in November 2024.

No fast-tracked return for Sophia Dunkley despite regional form, says England assistant coach

Time in middle for South East Stars is best remedy for out-of-favour batter, says Gareth Breese

Andrew Miller15-May-2024

Sophia Dunkley will have to wait in line for a return to international action, according to England Women’s assistant coach Gareth Breese, despite an impressive return to form for South East Stars in the opening rounds of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Dunkley, who is currently leading the tournament run-charts with 293 at 97.66 in five innings, including a century against Northern Diamonds last week, was dropped from the England set-up for the ongoing series against Pakistan after a desperate run of scores on this winter’s multi-format tours of India and New Zealand. In her absence – as well as that of Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is available once again after a minor medical procedure – England’s rejigged top-order endured a torrid start to the summer, collapsing to 11 for 4 in the first T20I at Edgbaston, before a strong middle-order fightback, led by the senior pairing of Heather Knight and Amy Jones, set their side up for a comfortable 53-run victory.Breese, however, insisted that England’s incumbents – including Dunkley’s nominal replacement Maia Bouchier, the stand-out player of the winter just gone – would be afforded the time and space required to grow into their roles, in much the same way that Dunkley herself will now be left to find her form, away from the spotlight, ahead of the final push towards this winter’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.”As batters, it’s one shot, one mistake and you might be back in a pavilion,” Breese said, ahead of Friday’s second match in Northampton. “It’s not an ideal situation to be 11 for 4, but one thing about the set-up here is that we back the girls. After one blip, we’re not just going to make an absolute U-turn on them.”It was the first game, a few people were a bit rusty, we didn’t get off to the start we wanted. Having the experience of Heather and Amy Jones coming in at that stage was brilliant in terms of setting up the recovery. But I’m sure the girls will have learned from seeing the Pakistani attack and will use that experience in a positive frame to go into the next game.”Dunkley, however, remains an integral part of the wider England set-up, as shown by her involvement in a red-ball training session at Loughborough on Tuesday. Breese, who is also her head coach at Welsh Fire, said this was part of a wider effort by the management to “touch base” when it was convenient for those players on the fringes, thereby leaving them more space to find form in their regional set-ups.”What we don’t want to do is bring girls all across the country for three hours, just for a session,” he said. “Every time a player leaves us, we try to support them as much as we can when they’re fairly close to us, while giving them an opportunity to get some more time in the middle. And it’s working exactly how we would want it to work.England’s top order (including Freya Kemp, above) endured a dramatic collapse in the first T20I•Getty Images

“Dunks has been working closely with her batting coach Alex Gidman, and she was in for a session with us yesterday, so she’s still in and around the fold. She’s gone back to doing what she’s done over the years, in terms of to getting herself selected, and that’s scoring runs. That’s all you can ask when you are out of favour, you let the runs do the talking, and I think she’s still in a really good place.”Any player who’s played for a while goes through ups and downs. And if they say they haven’t, then you don’t know how truthful they are in sharing.”In addition to the forthcoming ODI series against Pakistan, England have three ODIs and five T20Is coming up against New Zealand in June and July in which to finalise their World Cup plans. And while that does not, on the face of it, offer a huge amount of opportunities for out-of-favour players to make their case, Breese insisted that offering continuity to the squad incumbents was not remotely the same thing presenting a closed shop for selection.Related

Amy Jones rides the emotions to deliver dream 100th match

“We’ve seen people that have been selected from just outside our contracted group, and that’s what you want,” he said. “If you can have competition for places, then you’re pushing the girls who are contracted to be better. And that’s a really good environment to be in.”What you don’t want is a clear-cut 15, because if it’s too easy to select them, you probably haven’t got the girls in the right place.”The ultimate difference between the sides in the first T20I came in the bowling, particularly England’s three-prong spin attack. Sarah Glenn – back in the team after suffering concussion in New Zealand – led the line with four wickets, while Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean contributed a wicket apiece. All three bowlers are now in the top five of the ICC’s T20I rankings, with Ecclestone remaining at the top of the pile – a fact that augurs well with favourable conditions looming in Bangladesh. As the team’s spin coach, however, Breese said he wasn’t about to let the players rest on any laurels, describing himself as a bit of a “grumpy dad” when it comes to demanding ever higher standards.”It’s a real credit to the girls for the work they’ve put in over the last few years, to get the recognition in the standings,” he said. “I’m happy with where they are but sometimes, like a bit of a grumpy dad, I keep trying to push them to be better.”I almost don’t try and get flattered by the ratings. I just want to keep improving and then that will happen as a by-product of that. But the three girls complement each other really well, and they also contribute with the bat, which allows you to play all three in the same T20 team.”But I think all of them can get better. Even though Soph’s been top of the rankings, you’ve seen her grow into one of our best death bowlers. Deano has been a real wicket-taker for us, and Glenny’s been stunning since she came in. I’ve been lucky enough to know her since she was on the academy, and her character is probably her stand-out trait. That reflects in how consistent she is with the ball.”

KL Rahul on LSG's defeat: 'A poor performance overall'

Rahul said the wicket remained good to bat on in the chase but the pressure of chasing a target like 236 – “20 or 30 above par” – could result in slides like LSG’s

ESPNcricinfo staff05-May-20244:06

Moody: KKR’s batting has all bases covered

Kolkata Knight Riders crushed Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday at the Ekana Stadium after posting 235. Speaking after the heavy defeat, LSG’s captain KL Rahul tagged it a “poor performance overall” from his side, but particularly pinpointed the bowling as having cost LSG on the night. It was the first time this IPL season that a side had scored 200 or more batting first in seven matches in Lucknow. Rahul felt LSG lost their way while trying to go hard to haul in the target, saying his bowlers allowed KKR to score “20 or 30 runs above par”.”When you’re chasing a big total, you try to go hard and you end up losing wickets. So just a poor performance overall,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation.Related

KKR go top of the table after commanding Narine-led win over LSG

Sunil Narine and Phil Salt got KKR off to another explosive start, helping their side post 70 in the powerplay, the sixth time in 11 games this season that KKR managed those many or more. Rahul said that approach by KKR’s openers “put a lot of pressure” on his “young bowlers”.”We’ve seen how they have batted. They put a lot of pressure on the opposition, and our young bowlers just couldn’t handle that kind of pressure,” he said. “He [Narine] hit some really, really good shots, and that’s how the IPL is: you’ll come up against some really good players, and that’s when your character is tested. And I think we weren’t up to the mark today.”Once we come here [to Lucknow], it’s about execution, and we went wrong on that part. Bowlers tried their best. But the sooner you learn, the better it is for our team. We’ve made a couple of mistakes when we’ve come up against batters like Sunil or anyone who is powerful, and is striking over 200 or 250. Someone with that kind of intimidation has put a bit of pressure on our bowlers.”In reply, LSG were 70 for 1 in the eighth over of the chase, with both Rahul and Marcus Stoinis set. However, the required run rate had by then climbed above 13 runs an over, and then an LSG slide began. They lost 9 for 67 in less than nine overs, and were bowled out for 137 with almost four overs to spare. Rahul admitted there was nothing wrong with the pitch, but said scoreboard pressure probably derailed LSG.”The wicket was really good. It felt like a pretty true wicket,” he said. “There was a bit of bounce if you bowled hard lengths and back of a length. But nothing out of the ordinary; or it didn’t seemed like a pitch that was bad.”I think 235 was probably 20 or 30 runs above par. Our batting performance was really poor. But when you’re chasing such a big score under pressure, it’s always hard.”

Heinrich Klaasen: 'I hit one or two today that put a smile on my face'

Heinrich Klaasen will go into the IPL 2024 playoffs feeling like he is back at his best, having worked his way through a slight drop off in form. He hit 42 off 26 against Punjab Kings on Sunday evening in Hyderabad to help his team chase down 215 with relative ease, hitting a couple of shots along the way that “put a smile” on his face.”I haven’t hit it nicely over this period of time,” Klaasen said after the game. “So I went back into the nets to try and figure it out, [and] got something that helped. And I finally hit one or two today that put a smile on my face.”Klaasen had hit 253 runs in his first six innings this season, at an average of 63.25 and a strike rate of 199.21. But his next six knocks, including this one against PBKS in Hyderabad, brought him 128 runs at an average of 25.60 and a strike rate of 158.02. This run included a 2 off four balls against Mumbai Indians, and a 20 off 21 balls against Chennai Super Kings, both in SRH losses.Related

  • SRH ride on another Abhishek blitz to finish second in league-stage standings

Asked what he felt had been going wrong for him when his form fell away, Klaasen said: “I haven’t looked at the ball at all. And I was moving way too much. And then I found something. I challenged myself in the nets against the other guys, [like] the spinners. And all of a sudden, everything just clicked again.”So I just went back to the basics of standing dead still, watching the ball, and just reacting. And finally it came [off], so I’m very pleased.”What would have helped Klaasen in this regard was the long break SRH got – partly by design, partly due to the weather. Before today, they had last played against Lucknow Super Giants at home on May 8, before having a match against Gujarat Titans – also at home – washed out without a toss on May 16. Klaasen admitted that was a blessing in disguise.”It couldn’t have come at a better time for us, to be honest,” he said. “It has been a long couple of months. The schedule, I reckon that timing was the best for us. End of the IPL, into the playoffs, will be nice and fresh mentally, and obviously [then] into the [T20] World Cup. So that break was, I reckon, sent from above.”Klaasen and Co had to wait to know which playoff they will feature in, though. The win against PBKS put them second on the points table, one point ahead of Rajasthan Royals in third. Royals played table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders in the final league game of the season, later in the evening.”Yeah, we’ll definitely be awake and supporting KKR tonight,” Klaasen said with a smile. The smile would have remained as news of that game being washed out came through, confirming SRH’s top-two finish.
