Manchester United’s decision to hand David De Gea a new contract slammed by pundit

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has slammed Manchester United’s reported decision to hand David De Gea a new contract this summer.

What did he say?

Reports have suggested that the Spain international has agreed a new six-year deal with the Red Devils worth around £375k-a-week, thus making him the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper.

After hearing of United’s supposed decision, Jordan questioned how De Gea’s underwhelming campaign last season warranted him being given a bumper new contract.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

He said: “This is a lack of football savvy, this is laziness. If you look at De Gea’s performances, he’s in decline. He made only saved 69 per cent of the shots he faced last season, which puts him in the bottom-half of the Premier League goalkeepers. He’s in an average team, sure, but there are averages teams that have goalkeepers who are performing at a better level.

“I think Woodward is being lazy and would rather say, ‘I’ll do something with other people’s money’. I’m not saying De Gea is in full decline, but what I am saying, when you look at the statistics, is where else do you get a reward for going backwards?”

Saving face

In any other season, David De Gea being made the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper would have been met with universal nods of approval. The Spaniard has been the model of consistency in his time in the Premier League and has undeniably been one of the best in the world.

But last season saw him endure a disappointing campaign, that really began with Spain’s poor showing at the World Cup in Russia last summer. The 28-year-old’s four errors leading to goals in the top-flight made up almost half of the ten he has suffered in total in his Premier League career.

Handing him a new contract this summer feels a little like United trying to save face and restore some pride. The club are in the midst of a transfer window where Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku want out, and deals for top targets like Harry Maguire and Sean Longstaff are still some way from being completed.

Whilst describing it as simply “lazy” as Jordan suggests is a little perplexing, United’s decision on De Gea’s contract certainly feels a lot like a salvage effort in what has been a relatively disappointing summer thus far.

Aribo and Jones are showing good form ahead of Rangers qualifiers

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

TNS manager Scott Ruscoe has picked out Joe Aribo and Jordan Jones as the outstanding performers during Rangers’ recent friendly win, as reported by The Daily Record.

What’s he said?

Rangers are just days away from kicking off their second season under manager Steven Gerrard and hopes will be high they can overcome UEFA Europa League qualifying and make it into the group stages once again.

To do that they need to be at their best over the next couple of months and they’ve been busily preparing for the process in pre-season for almost three weeks already.

One of their final tune-ups came against Welsh champions TNS on Wednesday, winning 1-0 in a training ground match.

Ruscoe’s side have qualifiers of their own coming up in the Champions League, so were at a good stage of fitness for Rangers to test themselves against.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

The TNS boss was left impressed by two Gers players in particular, telling The Daily Record:

“The two Rangers players that stood out the most and caught the eye were Jordan Jones and Joe Aribo.

“It is very early days but Jones has the makings of being a really good player. He is capable of progressing his career at Rangers. Just being in and around experienced pros like Defoe and Steve Davis can help enhance his game further.

“Aribo also looked like a very accomplished footballer and he possesses some decent ability. I can totally understand why Rangers were keen to get him on board this summer.

“I feel Aribo is a player who could really flourish under the Rangers coaching and management team of Gerrard and Gary McAllister.”

Gibraltar test

Rangers’ first competitive test comes away to St Joseph’s of Gibraltar on Tuesday and given their lowly status in the game, the Gers will be expected to win comfortably and bring a lead back to Ibrox for the second leg.

Gerrard’s starting eleven against TNS could be a hint towards what kind of team will start the match next week, with Jermain Defoe leading the line as the central striker and new signings such as Aribo and Sheyi Ojo getting the nod too.

The returning Greg Docherty also started the friendly and it’ll be very interesting to see if the Gers boss uses him for the first time in competitive action.

With others like Steven Davis, James Tavernier and Connor Goldson featuring, it’s clear that Rangers will have a strong team available to them for the season opener.

Leeds target Sawyers can give them a new dynamic

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds’ summer hasn’t been the best to date. They’ve seen Pontus Jansson walk out of the door whilst they’ve also lost Jack Clarke on a permanent deal, although he’s back on loan.

There’s been some positivity in the fact Helder Costa has arrived but speculation surrounding a host of their players fails to go away.

Kemar Roofe has attracted interest from the Premier League whilst Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich could also make moves to the top-flight.

Incomings look like a struggle but one individual who could arrive through the doors of Elland Road is Romaine Sawyers.

On the chalkboard

Last week The Daily Record suggested that Celtic and Leeds were set to battle it out for the midfielder’s signature.

The Brentford man was impressive last term, registering six assists for his troubles in the Championship.

He initially started out as a number ten but it’s from deeper in midfield where he’s looked so comfortable for the Bees, featuring on 42 occasions.

The 27-year-old did play some part of last season behind the striker and it’s his experience there where he could be hugely influential if he joins Leeds.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Klich departs this summer but there are particular areas where their potential incoming could be better.

In 2018/19, Klich was devastating in attack, scoring ten goals as well as claiming nine assists.

In the process he completed 1.4 key passes per game, completing the same number of long balls. Sawyers played more passes per match, however, 63.9, compared to the Pole’s 47.3 and that enabled the former to play 1.6 key passes.

However, it’s in terms of the incisive passes off the ground where he’s truly superior, playing 3.9 on average each match. This could give Leeds a new dynamic if they did indeed replace Klich with Sawyers because on statistical evidence, he fails to provide many passes that aren’t on the floor.

His goal threat isn’t as high but if the Whites can get Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford firing at the same time that may not be so much of an issue.

Sawyers is also more composed in possession. He found his teammates 86.2% of the time compared to Klich who finished the term with a success rate of 81.1%. The fact the former attempted more passes makes his percentage particularly impressive.

In terms of goals, losing their number 43 would be disastrous, but in other areas, Sawyers could definitely be of huge benefit.

Celtic: Brendan Rodgers might be barking up the wrong tree

While it’d be unfair to ignore too many players during what has been a stunning three seasons for Celtic, some have obviously played more important roles in their dominance than others. Kieran Tierney has emerged as the Hoops’ golden boy as well as one of the most promising left-backs on the continent and, elsewhere, Callum McGregor won Celtic’s official and Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Obviously, both are key in Neil Lennon’s side, but former boss Brendan Rodgers is allegedly keen on luring his former prized assets away from Paradise. Indeed, according to the Daily Record, Leicester are apparently interested in a double swoop from Celtic, targeting both Tierney and McGregor to solve different issues in their squad and, in our minds, this taking place would be a catastrophe.

Still, there might not be much need to worry.

Tierney is clearly a Celtic diehard and even committed himself “for life” at Celtic back in 2017 and, while reported interest in him naturally won’t be welcome, it’s a problem the club have had to deal with for a while now. After all, the likes of Borussia Dortmund have been previously linked, but the 22-year-old has shown no signs of wanting to depart.

McGregor is another who has been crucial to the club’s success and the Scotland midfielder has previously spoken of his desire to remain a one-club man. So, alongside Tierney, these are two players who have bought into what it means to play for the club and have done little to suggest they’d want to leave.

Now, things can obviously change and the saga that saw Rodgers leave Parkhead for the East Midlands himself shows loyalty can disappear in an instant but there doesn’t appear to be much too much of a worry right now. Yes, football is littered with tales of players moving on for a bigger salary elsewhere but the two players in question do quite obviously have a connection to the Bhoys.

Considering their importance to the cause and the kind of comments they’ve made in regards to their futures thus far, it certainly wouldn’t be an easy task prying them away just yet. If the reports are correct, Rodgers might be barking up the wrong tree.

Leeds fans split on potential signing of Barcelona youngster Rafael Mujica

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been split after Marca reported that a deal to sign Barcelona youngster Rafael Mujica was close.

Mujica is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, but now aged 20 he is yet to make a first-team appearance for the European giants.

He has played 63 games for the Catalan club’s B team where he has scored just 10 goals, so it has been difficult for certain members of the Leeds fanbase to get excited about his potential arrival.

Other fans though are thrilled about the prospect of bringing in a player who has come through the same academy as Lionel Messi.

The potential signing of a Spanish-speaking striker has had certain supporters comparing Mujica to Luciano Becchio. The Argentine became a cult hero at the club, and boasted a fantastic goalscoring record at Elland Road.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Pundit View: Chris Sutton believes Neil Lennon is the right man for the Celtic job

[ad_pod ]Former Celtic striker and current media pundit Chris Sutton believes Neil Lennon can bring success to the Hoops next season, giving his instant reaction to the appointment on social media over the weekend.

What’s he said?

It’s fair to say Lennon becoming the permanent boss at Celtic Park has provoked a big reaction amongst supporters, with opinion appearing split on whether he is the right man to take on the job this summer.

Sutton though cited Lennon’s record during his last full season at the club, pointing out the massive points total, as well as his recent success of delivering two trophies during his interim period as manager.

Is he right to back Lennon so strongly?

As one of Lennon’s former teammates, it was always unlikely that Sutton was going to come out and criticise Celtic for appointing the 47-year-old.

It’s understandable there’s a bit of anxiety about his appointment, fans were craving a big name, but Sutton’s comments do highlight that he has previous success at Celtic Park that can’t be dismissed.

He won five trophies in his first spell at the club, also qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and since returning this year has done everything asked of him.

There will be big question marks about player recruitment this summer and plenty of fans will be waiting to see what kind of players are brought in before making a decision on how the new Lennon era will pan out.

For now though, patience is required and Celtic supporters should enjoy the initial treble success Lennon has secured for the club.

West Ham fans on Twitter discuss new kit supplier after update from key club source

[ad_pod ]

Lots of West Ham United fans on Twitter have been discussing the club’s possible new kit supplier after an update on Twitter from insider source ExWHUemployee.

The prominent figure amongst the Hammers section of the social media platform revealed on Thursday evening that the Irons have held a meeting with a new kit supplier, though it isn’t Nike.

Some supporters were angry about this, claiming that Umbro would probably be extending their contract which runs out at the end of next season and showing their disdain – “buffoons.”

The sports company took over from Adidas in the summer of 2015 and has been the kit supplier since the final campaign at the Boleyn Ground.

Other fans suggested different kit-makers with one musing that it could be out of “PONY and BUKTA” in reference to some of the East London outfit’s previous classic strips, whilst Under Armour, New Balance and Joma were other names mentioned.

Solskjaer should think twice about decision following latest Paul Pogba update: Opinion

Manchester United scraped a win this weekend as they kep their Champions League hopes alive with a 2-1 win against West Ham.

The Red Devils weren’t at their best but ensured three points with Paul Pogba brace from the spot proving enough for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to see off the resilient Hammers at Old Trafford.

With the summer transfer window something which is seemingly constantly in the news from a United point of view, manager Solskjaer will be more than aware of the challenges which he is set to face both in terms of keeping his star men, and bringing in new talent.

One of the players who is constantly being linked with a future away from Old Trafford is Paul Pogba, with a host of the top clubs in Europe casting their eye over the Frenchman.

However, news this weekend has emerged that United could be set for change in tune surrounding Pogba, and could be set to offer him the captaincy in a bid to keep the World Cup winning midfielder at the club.

We here in the Tavern though feel this might be a step too far for United, especially for a player who seems to have caused more than his fair share of problems at the club and always seems to have a cloud over him with regards to the next piece of controversy.

Giving in to Pogba and making him the main man sets a worrying precedent at the club, and gives the player a sense of power over the club.

This simply cannot happen, and if it means selling him on to bring in players who will offer more in terms of desire and effort, then that’s exactly what United should look to do.
