Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka’s batting coach, admitted his bowlers had lost their grip after a flying start to the second Test at Lord’s, but backed his rejigged attack to fight back in a crucial first hour on the second day. After winning the toss under cloudless skies, Sri Lanka’s captain, Tillakaratne Dilshan, sprang something of a surprise when he elected to bowl first, but his faith in his seamers was immediately justified as England slipped to 22 for 3 inside the day’s first eight overs. Two further breakthroughs put Sri Lanka in charge after tea on 201 for 5, but Eoin Morgan and Matt Prior wrestled control back for England with a pair of flowing half-centuries.”Up until tea, I thought we won the first two sessions, but we lost a bit of grip after the tea interval,” said Atapattu. “Giving up 170 runs at 4.9 [an over] is not good enough having won the toss. But it was all about getting important early wickets in the morning. We lost momentum in the last session but it doesn’t mean we can’t come back into the game.”Although England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, had hinted he might also have bowled first, Sri Lanka’s decision seemed to have been influenced by their capitulation in the final session at Cardiff, where they were bowled out for 82 in 24.4 overs. Atapattu, however, insisted that with the quality of batting in his team’s top-order, this was not the case, as shown by the decision not to add an extra batsman to the line-up.”At this level you can’t keep hiding people,” he said. “We have three batsmen [Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera] – ranked in first ten in the ICC rankings. It was just one of those bad days that we experienced in Cardiff, and we have to put that behind us and move forward.”The brand of cricket Sri Lanka plays is to win, and that’s the reason we have six batsmen and five bowlers here,” he said. “When we had [Chaminda] Vaas and [Muttiah] Muralitharan we could rely on them to take wickets, but now we have the young brigade and we have given them the extra bowler. We play to win and hopefully this will turn out to be one of those important games for us.”Sri Lanka’s aggression looked set to be rewarded when England’s top order fell cheaply to Suranga Lakmal and Chanaka Welegedara, and Atapattu bought into the sense of optimism on the field. “At tea I thought 300 is a good total, and thought we can make those runs, go past, and get a lead. Now that Prior has batted well, and our bowlers perhaps didn’t bowl the lines they wanted to, we missed a trick or two. It now looks like under 400 would be good.”In addition to the left-armer Welegedara, Sri Lanka recalled the hostile Dilhara Fernando, who had been ruled out of the Cardiff Test with knee trouble. He extracted Alastair Cook via a loose pull on 96, and bowled 13 overs in the day, but none with in the closing stages of the day while his team-mates were toiling. Atapattu, however, brushed off any injury concerns, and said that the decision had been tactical.”Fernando is basically not a line and length bowler,” said Atapattu. “He can hurry the batsmen, and we use him to disturb the batsmen in terms of rhythm, but he’s not a Welegedara or a Lakmal. He’s not been a new-ball bowler.”

Troughton named Warwickshire captain

Jim Troughton has been appointed as Warwickshire’s new captain following the resignation of Ian Westwood last week.Troughton, 31, played six one-day internationals for England in 2003 and has been at Edgbaston his entire career, making his first-class debut in 2001. Crucially he belongs in Warwickshire’s best XI for all formats of the game, something his predecessor did not and hastened Westwood’s decision to step down.Though part of the team that won the CB40 title last season Troughton struggled, like most of the Warwickshire top order, in the Championship, making 585 runs at 20.17 in 2010.He faces a challenge ensuring Warwickshire have better results in four-day cricket next season is eagerly anticipating the task. “It is a real honour for me to be asked to take over as Warwickshire captain and I look forward to continuing the great work started by Ian Westwood,” said Troughton.”Warwickshire cricket is in my blood and I will be working hard to uphold the great traditions of this club. I had a taste of the captaincy last season in the latter stages of the Twenty20 campaign, and I am thrilled to be taking on the position across all forms of the game.”Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles feels Troughton’s experience at the club will stand him in good stead as the team looks to improve its fortunes.”We are delighted that Jim has agreed to take on this important position and I have every confidence that his experience and maturity will make the transition a smooth one,” said Giles.”Jim is Warwickshire ‘through and through’, is one of our home-grown talents, and for the past two seasons has been a key member of the squad in all forms of the game. I am looking forward to working with him during the crucial winter preparation period as well as the coming seasons.”

West Ham United: Irons keen on move for Thiago Mendes

West Ham United are said to be eyeing a potential move for Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes in the upcoming transfer window.

The Lowdown: Mendes profiled

The 30-year-old first joined the French giants from Lille back in 2019 and has since gone on to make 107 appearances in all competitions for Peter Bosz’s side, providing 11 goal contributions during that time, as per Transfermarkt.

He is a crafty and versatile defensive midfielder, capable of playing the box to box or defensive role and even filling into the heart of defence at times, per Whoscored.

Now, a new update has emerged regarding the 5 foot 8 maestro making a possible transfer to the Premier League, and it’s one that fans of David Moyes’ outfit might just want to hear.

The Latest: Opponent to teammate?

According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola (via Sport Witness), it’s claimed that the Hammers are ‘interested in signing’ Mendes and ‘intend to make a bid’ for him, after being majorly impressed with his displays when facing Lyon in the Europa League.

The source states that the Irons would have ‘an advantage’ in the race for his signature, as a result of being able to offer him more money alongside granting him the opportunity to play in England.

The Verdict: Potential bargain

The £49k-per-week star currently has one year remaining on his current contract at Lyon, but they obviously won’t want to lose him for free, putting the Irons in a good negotiating position.

The man who was once hailed as a “key” player by Rangers coach Michael Beale has had a huge drop in value in recent times, which started out at £22.5m three years ago, to now being rated just £9m, so GSB could grab a possible bargain.

If the hierarchy could successfully secure his arrival at the London Stadium, it could prove to be an astute piece of business for West Ham, adding depth in multiple positions at little cost.

Newcastle make a bid for Darwin Nunez

Newcastle United are expected to have an explosive transfer window this summer, with new owners committed to improving the club’s Premier League form, and now it is reported that they have wasted no time in making a bid for a new player this summer.

What’s the word?

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, Newcastle have made their first move by bidding around €60m (£50m) to sign hot prospect Darwin Nunez.

The North-East club are competing with a number of Premier League sides for the signature of the Benfica star, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool all also reportedly plotting moves for the 22-year-old.

Huge coup for Newcastle

Following their bid, if Newcastle United were able to secure the signing of the star striker over their competitors it would be a huge coup for the club going into next season.

The centre-forward – who is believed to be valued at £83m and has been hailed a “diamond” by Steve McManaman – has been drawing attention to himself this season, scoring 32 goals in all competitions – with 24 goals in 24 games in the league and six huge Champions League goals that guided Benfica to giant killings in the prestigious European competition.

Nunez scored two goals against Barcelona in the group stages, with Benfica taking four points from both games that ultimately led to the LaLiga giants falling into the Europa League, with the striker also bagging against Bayern Munich in the group.

The 22-year-old’s fourth goal in the competition knocked Ajax out in the second leg of their round of 16 clash, however, despite netting two impressive goals against Liverpool over the two legs in the quarter-finals, it wasn’t enough to progress the Portuguese side further – who crashed out of the Champions League at Anfield this week.

A goal-scorer of this calibre exactly fits the profile of what Newcastle need to take them to the next level in 2022/23, with Callum Wilson unable to fulfil the striker role successfully following a series of injuries since he joined the club in 2020, so the signing of Nunez would be an incredible upgrade.

Howe will have a lot of work to do this summer to identify players that can make a difference in the team to ensure they don’t find themselves in another relegation battle next season, and with the backing from the new owners, there’s no doubt that Newcastle will be able to attract a number of great prospects for the team going forward.

Steven Finn wins Emerging Player award

The England fast bowler Steven Finn has capped a remarkable maiden year of international cricket by being named as the ICC’s Emerging Player at their annual awards ceremony in Bengaluru

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Oct-2010The England fast bowler Steven Finn has capped a remarkable maiden year of international cricket by being named as the ICC’s Emerging Player at their annual awards ceremony in Bengaluru.Finn has claimed 32 wickets at 23.21 in his eight Test appearances against Bangladesh and Pakistan, including consecutive five-wicket hauls at Lord’s and Old Trafford in May and June. He made his debut in Chittagong back in March, having flown out to Bangladesh only days earlier as an injury replacement for Graham Onions.Receiving his award from legendary West Indies bowler Joel Garner, Finn said: “It’s a great honour, and one that I wasn’t expecting. It’s been a great honour just to play Test cricket for my country over the past 12 months, because Tests are the highest level of the game, and though it’s been tough at times, there’s the joy of representing your country.”Finn’s 6’7″ frame, allied to a solid temperament and an intelligent game-brain, has made him an integral part of an England bowling attack that has secured victory in seven of their last eight Tests, and even at the age of 21, he is regarded as integral to England’s hopes of successfully defending the Ashes for the first time since 1986-87.”We are very confident going into the Ashes,” said Finn. “We are very well prepared, and though we are going in as underdogs, we have a very settled side.”Finn was one of two Englishmen to make the final shortlist for the awards, alongside his team-mate Graeme Swann, who was nominated for the Player of the Year category. He beat Pakistan’s Umar Akmal, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews and Australia’s Tim Paine to the Emerging Player title, which was won last year by the Australia fast bowler, Peter Siddle. The Emerging Player of the Year Award was one of nine individual prizes given at this year’s ICC Awards. Players eligible for this award must be under 26 years of age at the start of the voting period (August 24, 2009) and have played no more than five Test matches and/or 10 ODIs before the start of the voting period.

Leeds: Hamburg keen on Crysencio Summerville

Leeds United are in talks with Hamburg over a possible loan move for winger Crysencio Summerville.

The Lowdown: Summerville at Leeds

Summerville, labelled as a player with a ‘bag of tricks’, made the move to Yorkshire back in September 2020 and is out of contract at Elland Road next year (summer 2023).

The Dutch U21 international has made 24 appearances for the club’s U23 side and recently scored a hat-trick against Sunderland.

His impressive displays have earned him eight senior appearances under Marcelo Bielsa, but it seems as if he could follow in Cody Drameh’s footsteps in leaving in search of regular first-team football.

The Latest: Talks gathering pace

According to Bild, relayed by Sports Witness, talks are gathering pace between Leeds and Hamburg over a move for Summerville.

The player wants to feature more at senior level, with a long-term loan deal possibly on the cards.

Summerville is also wanted by sides in his native country, but a move to Germany with Hamburg is apparently on the cards before the month is out.

The Verdict: Not ideal

January was supposed to be a month where Victor Orta bolstered Bielsa’s squad for the second half of the season. However, should Summerville leave the club, Leeds could end up with fewer players than they started with.

Of course, both Drameh and Summerville weren’t first-team regulars, however, with the number of injuries Leeds have suffered this season and Bielsa’s small squad, every player is needed at Elland Road.

Key target Brenden Aaronson may not end up joining until the summer, so the club’s outgoing business at the end of the month could now be viewed as a gamble as Leeds look to ensure a third successive season of Premier League football.

Wolves handed Willy Boly injury boost

Having entered the winter break in eighth place in the Premier League table with 34 points on the board from 21 games, Wolves are in a comfortable place to push on with their campaign and aim to secure a European place by the end of the season.

In addition to that, it seems as though the Old Gold could be set to see the return of one of their barely seen players from injury in the coming weeks.

What’s the latest?

On the subject of what the current situation is with defender Willy Boly in regards to his recovery from injuries that have kept him sidelined for the past few weeks, Lage had this to say on the matter.

He said: “He’s started training outside, not with the team, with his physio. Good news.”

Wolves originally signed Boly back in the 2017 summer transfer window from FC Porto on loan before securing him on a permanent basis a year later.

Overall, the 30-year-old has gone on to make a total of 137 appearances in a Wolves shirt across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing four assists along the way, which is a decent return for a defender.

Fans will be delighted

While a full return to action may not be on the cards for the Ivory Coast international just yet, it’s good to hear that he has taken a step towards making a full recovery, something that surely delight a lot of fans in the process.

Even though the trio of Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman have been three of the top five outfield Wolves players in terms of minutes played this season in the Premier League, and have done pretty well as a defensive unit with Lage’s side conceding just 16 league goals this season, it would be a massive boost for them to have Boly back as a viable option at the back in case any of the other defenders get injured.

After all, he is still vitally important. Last term, for instance, in a three-month injury layoff Wolves played 15 league matches and kept just one clean sheet. Once Boly returned, they didn’t concede over the next 283 minutes of league action.

Moving forward, if the defender can recover as quickly as possible and keep his fitness up for the remainder of the season, he could put a turbulent first half to his latest campaign with Wolves behind him and potentially help his side secure European football again.

Paul Horton made a fine century and James Anderson continued his superb returnto the Lancashire line-up with two second-innings wickets as the visitors tookcontrol against Essex at Chelmsford.Resuming on 83 for 3 after Anderson’s six wickets had helped dismiss thehosts for 176, Lancashire reached 312 on the back of Horton’s 123.England paceman Anderson was soon adding to his list of victims after Essexembarked upon their second innings, removing Billy Godleman and John Maunderslbw in his first six overs – and before Essex closed on 46 for 2, he looked to havedismissed Jake Mickleburgh as well. The Essex youngster was given out by umpire Peter Willey as Anderson raced downthe wicket to take what he believed was a return catch.Mickleburgh, looking back and obviously unhappy, was halfway to the pavilionwhen he was called back after Willey and his colleague Nigel Llong, standing atsquare leg, conferred. It was ruled that the ball had come off the batsman’s helmet and he continued his innings to keep Alastair Cook company until the end.Much now will depend on Cook if Essex are to take the match into a final dayand make a fight of it. The England opener will resume on 29 fully aware of thehuge burden resting upon his shoulders.Lancashire’s innings was earlier built around Horton, who resisted for justover six hours before being the last man out. It was a largely patient innings that contained the occasional flourish – with 14 boundaries – and was brought to an end when he was caught behind by James Foster to provide Chris Wright with his third wicket.Horton’s major support came from Steve Croft, the pair adding 130 in 38 oversfor the sixth wicket. Croft’s share was 56, containing eight fours, before his defences were breached by Ryan ten Doeschate. But it was David Masters who emerged as Essex’s most successful bowler. Thepaceman finished with 4 for 81 from 29 overs and with a little bit more luckcould have reaped greater reward. He certainly beat the bat more than his colleagues, but young fast bowler Maurice Chambers also displayed a fair amount of hostility while picking up 2 for 58 from 23 overs. Essex go into the third day still requiring a further 90 to clear the arrears.
