Zimbabwe Cricket have confirmed that Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand will be touring the country in the course of a busy schedule in 2011 that includes both one-day internationals and Test matches, as well as a triangular series including South Africa and an Australian A side.”The Zimbabwe Cricket team is scheduled to have a busy schedule in 2011-2012 season commencing in August,” ZC managing director Ozias Bvute told in Zimbabwe. “Tours have been confirmed with Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand and a triangular series against South Africa and Australian ‘A’ sides.”Bvute admitted frustration at Zimbabwe’s performance at the World Cup, where the team thrashed Canada and Kenya but struggled to be competitive against the top sides. He suggested that more matches against strong teams was the key to Zimbabwe’s development.”There is a lot of disappointment after our inability to progress to the quarter-finals at the World Cup, however, given the schedule of matches lined up over the next four years we feel this should adequately prepare our team for the next World Cup.”Zimbabwe’s home season begins with Bangladesh’s visit between July 1 and July 22. The two teams have been regular opponents in recent years, having played 18 ODIs against each other since January 2009, with Bangladesh winning 13 of those games. Zimbabwe will play a one-off Test match and four ODIs against them before Australia A arrive for a one-day tri-series also involving Zimbabwe and South Africa, and two four-day matches against the host. Match details are yet to be confirmed at this stage, but the tour will run from late June to late July.Pakistan then visit for another Test match, three ODIs and two Twenty20 matches from July 26 to August 19. New Zealand, who sent an A side to Zimbabwe for an unofficial Test series against Zimbabwe A last year, have not yet finalised dates for their tour.Understandably, the squads for visiting international sides are yet to be named, but Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel has announced a provisional 24-man squad which will be trimmed in May.”We have given the provisional squad advanced notice for this tour to allow them sufficient time to prepare for the series pending selection in the final squad,” said National Talent Manager Greg Chappell. “The Australia A program in recent years has played a big role in readying athletes for the rigors of international cricket, with players such as Tim Paine, Callum Ferguson, Cameron White and Mitchell Starc all coming into the Australian set-up at varying times over the last couple of years and having an impact.”This group is a cross section of the best young players in the country. Some of them have already had a taste of international cricket and show signs of being among those that will be the backbone of our teams in the future, while the others have shown enough in domestic cricket to suggest that they are the type of cricketer that we will need to be able to challenge India, South Africa, England and Sri Lanka for supremacy in the next few years.”With the new World Test Championship and the new ODI ranking periods beginning straight after the ICC Cricket World Cup and with tours to Sri Lanka and South Africa later this year and New Zealand and India touring Australia next summer, it will be a great opportunity for these young players to show their skills and put their name forward to be part of this challenging period for Australian cricket,” added Chappell. The last time an Australian representative team visited Zimbabwe was in 2008, when a Centre of Excellence Scholarship team toured Africa.Provisional Australia A squad: George Bailey, Michael Beer, Luke Butterworth, Trent Copeland, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Patrick Cummins, James Faulkner, Callum Ferguson, Aaron Finch, Peter George, Jon Holland, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Nicolas Maddinson, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Stephen O’Keefe, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.

Spurs may sell ‘important’ Conte favourite

Tottenham Hotspur could also sell an ‘important’ player who manager Antonio Conte ‘raves about’, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites exodus?

This upcoming Spurs transfer window looks set to be the most interesting one in quite some time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lilywhites transfer chief Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy, tasked with backing Conte ahead of the 2022/2023 Premier League season, are reportedly going to sit down with the Italian as he eyes six major signings (The Telegraph).

However, amid their financial complications off the pitch, with club debt mounting to around £706 million, it is imperative that the club offload surplus players to balance the books and bolster Conte’s transfer kitty.

Their homegrown quota also presents a complication with reliable journalist Matt Law recently claiming that, if Spurs want to sign an overseas forward this summer, one of Steven Bergwijn or Lucas Moura may have to be offloaded.

The Latest: Gold backs possible Bergwijn exit…

Writing for football.london in the last 24 hours, another credible source in Tottenham correspondent Gold has now backed that Bergwijn could also leave north London amid consistent exit links surrounding other players.

This is despite the fact Conte ‘raves about’ his Dutch winger, even calling him an ‘important’ player, with Gold adding that Bergwijn is unlikely to want to stay for 22/23 amid his lack of minutes.

The Verdict: Stick or twist?

The Netherlands international has proven to be a useful option for Conte over this campaign.

His added time brace to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win at Leicester City in late January is evidence of the player’s impact and quality when given an opportunity, and could even be the moment that secures Champions League football come the end of the campaign.

Bergwijn’s versatility as an attacking outlet from the wide positions and further forward is another incentive for Spurs to keep hold of the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Despite his quality, though, a mooted move back to the Eredivisie with footballing giants Ajax could be too enticing to ignore – and if the 24-year-old pushes for a move – Spurs may well need to consider a sale depending on their possible offer.

Liverpool: Klopp poised to make Bremer bid

Liverpool are interested in a deal to bring Gleison Bremer to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Tutto Juve (via Sport Witness), who claim that Liverpool are ready to launch an offer of around €30m (£25m) in a bid to fend off competition from Inter Milan in the race to land the Torino centre-back.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

This would appear to support a recent report by Goal, who suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side have already made initial enquires regarding a deal for the 25-year-old defender – whom the Serie A side are resigned to losing this summer.

Imagine him & Van Dijk

With Joe Gomez being heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, in addition to how impressive Bremer has been in Italy this season, it is easy to see why Klopp would be interested in a move for the defender this summer.

Indeed, over his 29 Serie A appearances in the current campaign, the £27m-rated Brazilian has been imperious in the heart of the Torino defence, helping his side keep eight clean sheets, as well as making an average of 3.4 interceptions – the most of any player in the league – 1.4 tackles, 3.9 clearances and winning 6.7 duels per game.

The £53k-per-week centre-back has also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals and registering one assist, in addition to taking an average of 0.9 shots and making 0.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor dubbed both “unbelievable” and “faultless” average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as the third-best defender in the Italian top flight.

Furthermore, FBref also ranks the 25-year-old in the top 2% of defenders in Europe’s big five leagues for pressures per 90, as well as the top 1% for interceptions, the top 4% for blocks, the top 11% for clearances, the top 4% for aerials won, the top 1% for npxG and the top 18% for dribbles completed – all of which would appear to make him something of a perfect signing for Klopp’s high-intensity brand of football.

As such, it is clear for all to see that, should Bremer be able to continue this level of performance after a potential switch to Liverpool, Klopp would have undoubtedly formed an extremely formidable centre-back partnership in Bremer and Virgil van Dijk – something that leads us to believe the German must do all he can to land the Torino titan this summer.

Pollard committed to West Indies cause

Kieron Pollard has reiterated his commitment to West Indies despite becoming a Twenty20 cricketer for hire as he travels the world playing the shortest format. However, the allrounder added that drastic changes were needed to the way the game was run in the Caribbean.Pollard drew an angry response from the West Indies Cricket Board after he declined a place on the A-team tour of England in favour of his Friends Provident t20 deal with Somerset, but he believes he was completely within his rights to make that decision because we wasn’t on a retainer contract with the WICB.”I don’t want go into that too much, it’s a fairly unique situation I found myself in,” he told Cricinfo. “Things haven’t gone smoothly in West Indies in recent times and a lot of things need to be fixed. But it was about me being a professional sportsman and I will always be committed to the West Indies team whenever I am called up.”It’s my dream to play Test cricket and that will never change,” he added. “At the moment it is Twenty20 which has presented itself as my opportunity, but if the chance comes to put the whites on that will be a dream. I’m still young and would love to play for West Indies in all formats.”Pollard has been a great success at Somerset with 248 runs at a strike-rate of 177.14 and has claimed 20 wickets at 12.45, but he added the results of his county stint have no bearing on how he feels about shunning West Indies A. “I would have stood by my decision even if I hadn’t performed well for Somerset. At the end of the day the decision has been made and I will stick by it.”He has certainly left a mark around the county scene. On his debut against Middlesex, at Lord’s, he hit 89 off 45 balls which included a mighty six onto the roof of the pavilion. “It was big,” he said. “I don’t know how many metres, but it was a great start.”Pollard has taken his Twenty20 skills around the world over the last year. He was an overseas player for South Australia, has an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians and now can also add Somerset to that list. In a few weeks the West Indian domestic Twenty20 begins and, depending on his county commitments, Pollard is due to appear for Trinidad and Tobago.”It’s just the way it has happened for me,” he said. “I’m not contracted by West Indies and the Twenty20 format is something that suits my game. I don’t know how many more will follow, but some players might think of it as an option.”Trinidad and Tobago are the leading Twenty20 side in the region and will be early favourites to reach the Champions League which will be staged during September in South Africa. That would leave Pollard having to chose between his IPL team and his home team having already told South Australia he won’t play for them.”I’m looking forward to playing for Trinidad and qualifying for the Champions League,” he said, “and if that situation arises then I’ll make the decision who to play for. I’m going to give my all for Trinidad and Tobago.”Kieron Pollard is playing for Somerset in the Friends Provident t20. WBA: Callum Robinson must start v Millwall

West Bromwich Albion’s next Championship game sees them take on Millwall at The Den on Saturday after succumbing to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Preston North End in midweek, leaving Valerien Ismael in desperate need of a strong performance and positive result from his side this weekend.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players the Baggies boss could select in his starting XI to take on the Lions, one man who didn’t start in the midweek defeat but we feel should be in the team from the beginning on Saturday is Callum Robinson.

In the Preston game, the attacker – who is currently picking up £18k-per-week according to Salary Sport – was brought on in the 56th minute to replace Matt Phillips but could only record two shots at goal in his time on the pitch, with both being off target.

Despite this underwhelming return, the Irishman’s previous appearance for the Baggies off the bench in their 3-0 win over Peterborough United last weekend was a much more eventful one, with Robinson showing his attacking and creative ability by providing two assists in just 16 minutes.

Described as a player who “gives his all” for the team on the pitch by Baggies podcaster Adrian Goldberg, the 26-year-old should be given the chance to show what he can do from the start once again after Daryl Dike unfortunately suffered a muscle injury and will be out of action for a significant period of time.

The Express & Star recently revealed in a poll of West Brom fans that 90% of respondents would like to see Ismael relieved of his duties at The Hawthorns, presumably due to the fact that Albion have won just one of their six previous league games. Therefore, the match at Millwall could be huge in terms of West Brom’s promotion hopes as well as the manager’s immediate future at the club.

It could also be a big one for Robinson if he can show why he should be starting regularly. In the process, he may just keep his boss in a job for a little while longer if he makes an impact similar to his one against Peterborough.

'Negative' Malik slammed by team-mates, coach

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, with team-mates and coaches accusing him of being a negative influence in the team

A video of the PCB’s inquiry committee investigations into the ill-fated Australia tour has revealed the level of in-fighting and disunity within the Pakistan side. Though not new as such, the video – leaked to a leading channel in Pakistan – confirms speculation surrounding the startling level of distrust and discord between senior members of the side.Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is at the centre of it, accused by team-mates and coaches of being a negative influence in the team. In the video, Malik is ultimately described by a committee member as a “termite”, with broader criticism of his role ranging from backbiting against players to politicking within the team. The PCB took action against seven players, including Malik, after the committee concluded its investigations, though they never made public the report. Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan were banned indefinitely, Malik and Naved-ul-Hasan were banned for a year while Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers were fined and placed on probation for six months for specific incidents of indiscipline.”He (Malik) is a negative person and he creates problems. I wanted him to be sent back home,” former coach Intikhab Alam told the committee members. Intikhab also said that Malik had initially agreed to bat at No.3 but shied away during the tour of New Zealand, which preceded the Australia series. He also accuses him of deliberately sitting out of the second Test at Sydney.Predictably, the most scathing criticism comes from Yousuf, with whom Malik has had a public feud almost from the moment he became captain in 2007, after a disastrous World Cup in the Caribbean. Yousuf held Malik and the selection committee of the time responsible for his ouster from the team for the 2007 World Twenty20 and subsequent series. Both made public statements against each other while Yousuf was away from the team, till his return last year during the tour of Sri Lanka. However, their feud picked up again after Australia, where Yousuf was the captain. Yousuf was slammed by the media and former players for his defensive approach during the Sydney Test, and after the tour concluded, was even accused of “infighting” and having a “negative influence”, similar to the charges laid against Malik.”He played politics all the time. Former chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf made a big blunder and hurt Pakistan cricket when he appointed Malik captain in 2007 when his place in the side was also not confirmed,” Yousuf told the committee. “This led to other players also believing they could become captain, it set a wrong precedent in Pakistan cricket.”Malik responded by criticising Yousuf’s captaincy during the tour to the committee, where they failed to win a single match. “I went out during water break in the Sydney Test on the final day and told him to attack Mike Hussey but he didn’t listen,” Malik said. “His captaincy in Australia was pathetic, he has no confidence to take decisions.”Malik found no support from another captain and senior player, Shahid Afridi, who accused him of backbiting. “I told him clearly on his face that if he continues this practice of his double standards he will not survive in the team for too long and I will not have him in the team if I am made captain,” Afridi said. Afridi is currently the Twenty20 captain and Malik is still serving his one-year ban. His appeal is set for May 22.Intikhab is also critical of the players’ behavior and manner away from the field, questioning their education levels and upbringing, their mental aptitude and ultimately concluding that they “seem to be mentally retarded.” He suggests, as remedial measures, that Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Yousuf and Younis be removed from the team, though he says of Younis that “he is not a troublemaker but he has other issues.”Parts of the interaction of Rana with the committee are also on the video. Rana talks at length about the players’ unhappiness with Younis when he was captain last year, admitting that he was part of a concerted movement to try and remove him.The leak of the video – and more will come over the coming days – has come as an acute embarrassment for the PCB, which has tried hard to keep the findings of the report private. Six of the seven players have since appealed the punishments and hearings are currently underway under the aegis of a retired judge: the board blamed the players and their legal counsels for the leak of proceedings that were held in March. The video recordings were obtained and shown by , the only sports channel in Pakistan.”The board had the video recordings of the proceedings since February and nothing was leaked out to the media,” PCB legal advisor and a member of the inquiry committee Tafazzul Rizvi said. “But we had given the video and audio recordings to some of the players and their legal representatives [at the appeals]. So it was very obvious who leaked these video recordings,” Rizvi said.He said the board had kept all the proceedings of the inquiry committee confidential for the sake of Pakistan cricket, the reputation of the players and the sport itself. “But if the players want these things to come out in the open then fine they will also have to bear the consequences, the board is certainly not responsible for leaking out these confidential things,” Rizvi said.

Ross Taylor blitz crushes Leicestershire

Ross Taylor blasted 80 not out from 33 balls to set record-breaking Durham on their way to a 71-run victory over Leicestershire in the Friends Provident t20

14-Jun-2010
ScorecardRoss Taylor blasted 80 not out from 33 balls to set record-breaking Durham on their way to a 71-run victory over Leicestershire in the Friends Provident t20. Taylor hit nine sixes in his innings and shared in an unbroken stand of 117 in 45 balls with Dale Benkenstein as they plundered 81 off the last four overs of the hosts’ innings at Chester-le-Street.Both the batting records Durham broke at Edgbaston on Friday were beaten again. The total of 225 for 2 was 10 more than they scored against Warwickshire, and Taylor beat Ian Blackwell’s Durham record score of 79. Durham’s total was also the highest in the competition this season, and although Leicestershire kept up with the required run rate for much of their innings they lost wickets regularly and were all out for 154.Four of the last five wickets went to Paul Collingwood, with Taylor completing the win by holding his third catch at deep midwicket. England star Collingwood completed his two-game stint without having a bat, although he did bring along the World Twenty20 trophy for photo opportunities.Nadeem Malik conceded only two runs off the first over of the Durham innings and Claude Henderson only one off the 10th. But young seamers Harry Gurney and Wayne White between them conceded 102 from seven overs.Phil Mustard, who won the toss, and Blackwell put on 102 for the first wicket. Mustard fell for 65, made from 41 balls, when he lifted Henderson to long on, bringing in Taylor in the 12th over. Five overs later and three successive sixes off the bowling of left-armer Gurney took him to 50 from 23 balls. When Blackwell departed for 37, skying a heave at Matthew Hoggard, Benkenstein went in ahead of Collingwood and hit three sixes in his unbeaten 35, which came off 17 balls.Leicestershire needed a big innings from Brad Hodge, but after making 12 he took a wild hit at Mitch Claydon and was caught by Taylor at backward point. Ben Harmison, recalled in place of brother Steve, took the next two wickets, then Blackwell struck with his first ball, having James Benning caught behind. It was a sign of the visitors’ desperation when Paul Nixon was stumped swinging wildly at Blackwell.James Taylor scored most of the 21 runs which came in the 13th over, bowled by Liam Plunkett, and at that point Leicestershire were 15 ahead of Durham’s score at the same stage. But Taylor departed for 38 and wickets continued to fall as Collingwood left his mark.

Everton: Potential Rooney plan revealed

Everton may team Wayne Rooney up with an interim manager, according to The Mirror’s David Maddock.

The lowdown

The 36-year-old is currently in charge at Derby County, who have been hit a combined 21-point deduction after entering administration and admitting breaches of accounting rules (via BBC Sport).

The Englishman began his playing career at Goodison Park, scoring 15 Premier League goals as a teenager before joining Manchester United in a £27m deal in 2004. He then returned to the Toffees for a single season in 2017 after his Old Trafford career came to an end.

The latest

According to The Mirror, Rooney is on Everton’s list of managerial options, but his limited experience is a concern given the Toffees’ predicament in terms of sitting just four points above the Premier League relegation zone.

They’ve been looking at potential interim candidates, ‘pursuing a similar idea to Manchester United’, who have given Ralf Rangnick the reins until the end of the season. There is a possibility that Rooney could work ‘alongside an interim with an appropriate CV’.

The verdict

Rooney has done a commendable job in hugely difficult circumstances at Derby, hauling them off the foot of the Championship table earlier this month. Without those points deductions, they’d actually be knocking on the door of the top half.

Everton’s hesitation is understandable – he has never managed in the Premier League before and they’re uncomfortably close to the relegation zone – but he has had to cope with mighty adversity at Pride Park.

With a more experienced hand to offer guidance at first, giving him the job might not be the worst idea, even if it would be a unique arrangement in the English top flight.
