Everton transfer update on Matheus Nunes

Everton are ‘practically certain’ to sign Matheus Nunes in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Midfielders needed

With recent rumours emerging that both Allan and James Rodriguez could be on their way to Real Madrid to join up with former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti, the Goodison Park club may be in desperate need of strengthening in the centre of midfield.

Even if both Allan and Rodriguez stay put, the Merseysiders would not say no to added squad depth ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The Latest: Nunes likely

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the Toffees are ‘practically certain’ to sign Nunes, with general terms of agreement being made between Everton and Sporting Lisbon.

However, the Portuguese champions are reportedly taking things calmly, and there is ‘no haste’ with regards to getting a potential deal done.

The Verdict: Sign Nunes

Playing in 31 Liga NOS games last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists (Transfermarkt), Nunes was a key figure in Sporting’s recent title triumph, and his winning mentality would surely be a great asset for Everton to have both in the dressing room as well as on the pitch.

The midfielder also won 3.9 of his duels per game and averaged 1.2 successful dribbles and one key pass per match in 2020/21 (Sofascore).

At just 22 years of age as well, the Brazilian certainly has a lot of potential; and at a height of 1.83m (6 foot), he should have little problems in coping with both the physical and aerial demands of the Premier League.

While a potential deal looks close to being completed, Everton should be looking to wrap it up as soon as possible so that Nunes can be best prepared for pre-season.

Spurs make contact with Potter

According to an update by Sport Italia TV journalist Gianluigi Longari, Tottenham Hotspur have now had ‘positive first contacts’ with Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter.

The Lowdown: Spurs still searching…

It’s been over two months now since Spurs opted to sack former boss Jose Mourinho and the club are still yet to announce a replacement despite numerous talks.

The Lilywhites have seen discussions with a plethora of managerial candidates, including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso, fall flat in the last few weeks alone (BBC).

Non-international Spurs players return for pre-season training on July 5 and time is running out for chairman Daniel Levy to find his new man for the helm.

The Latest: Tottenham have now made Potter contact…

As per Italian reporter Longari, Spurs have now made ‘positive first contacts’ with Brighton boss Potter as Levy whittles down his shortlist of managers for the job.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 46-year-old had been mentioned as a possible target previously but talks for Pochettino and Conte appeared to overshadow his links to the job.

Fabio Paratici’s arrival also saw Tottenham turn to Serie A-experienced coaches Fonseca and Gattuso, but Longari believes Potter is back on the radar and contact has now been made.

As well as the Englishman, it is believed that former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo remains a ‘valid’ candidate.

The Verdict: Solid option…

A swoop for Potter after just holding discussions with the likes of Pochettino and Conte could look tame by comparison, but he actually ticks plenty of boxes for Tottenham.

In line with Levy’s originally sought-after profile of manager, as detailed in his end of season letter to supporters, the Seagulls head coach encourages an open, attacking brand of football whilst being adept at operating with limited resources.

He has garnered no shortage of praise for his job on the south coast, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in particular having been blown away by Potter.

The Spaniard called Tottenham’s managerial candidate the ‘best English manager’ and even went as far as to say he would have loved to play under Potter as a player (Brighton & Hove Independent).

Speaking to Sky Sports, via Tribal Football, Brighton midfielder Adam Lallana also heaped praise on his boss – lauding Potter as a ‘world class manager’.

West Ham: Lingard chances decreasing

West Ham’s chances of signing Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis appear to be decreasing by the week…

What’s the word?

The ever-reliable ExWHUemployee revealed a gutting update over the situation during the latest episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, where he said:

“I think I would maybe say, [a] 30% [chance] he will come to West Ham. It is my opinion and I’m not ruling anything out.

“I would have said a lot higher a couple of weeks ago, 85/90%.

“It’s just based upon a conversation I had the other day with someone that would know him well and it indicated to me that he was more keen to get back to Manchester United and establish himself there than to move and be good at West Ham. But I guess time will tell.”

Chances decreasing

This is just another setback in the Irons’ bid to bring the 28-year-old back to the London Stadium this summer following a very successful half-season loan spell.

Indeed, the Manchester United outcast emerged as a star man under David Moyes, scoring nine goals and providing five assists. His form saw him graded as West Ham’s second-best player (7.22), as per WhoScored ratings, whilst no player averaged more shots per game (2.6) and he wasn’t far behind for dribbles (1.1) and key passes (1.1) per match either.

The Scotsman reiterated his desire to keep hold of Lingard following their final-day win over Southampton, three points which sealed their place in the Europa League next term.

“I hope Jesse’s here, we’d like to keep him, he’s done an exceptional job for us but there’s no guarantees, he’s not our player,” Moyes told reporters, via the Evening Standard. “But I hope Jesse realises we’ve been good for him as well, and that he joined a club on the up.”

Lingard has struggled for regular game time in recent seasons, something that the Hammers have been able to give him, almost leading to a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad, so it seems baffling to stay at Old Trafford to sit behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek.

This latest claim will also be devastating for much of the East London faithful, many of whom appear to have been just as eager to see the £20m-rated dynamo back at the club.

Lingard’s reported desire to stay at United will certainly not go down well at West Ham.

AND in other news, Moyes risks West Ham disaster over shocking Lingard alternative who was a “liability” in 2020/21…

David Norris warns Leeds United they need Kalvin Phillips cover

Leeds United need a replacement for when Kalvin Phillips is unavailable, says former Whites midfielder David Norris.

Phillips was an essential player for Leeds last season, starting 28 games for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the Premier League.

He is also quickly becoming a very important member of Gareth Southgate’s England team, proving that with his role in Raheem Sterling’s matchwinner against Croatia in the Three Lions’ opening Euro 2020 game.

For Norris, when Phillips is not in Leeds’ team, there is a dip. And the ex-Whites player is now calling for Bielsa to address that by signing some adequate cover.

“When he’s not played, they haven’t done as well,” Norris said in an exclusive interview with FFC. “If he was going to pick up a little bit longer term injury or be a little bit more in and out with potential injuries, a replacement is probably going to be needed.”

The above is certainly something for Bielsa to consider going into the new campaign. Fortunately, Phillips has had a good injury record over the last few years.

The England midfielder was rarely absent during his time in the Championship, making 37 appearances in Leeds’ 2019/20 title-winning season and 44 the campaign prior. It bodes well, though Bielsa can do no harm by signing a back-up.

Pakistan needs to earn a psychological advantage

Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Imtiaz Sipra19-Jun-2001Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Much that one believes, two wrongs do not make a right, yet one feels that a wrong at times has to be taken into account due extenuating circumstances. Conceded, the pitch invasions at Edgbaston and Headingley were unwarranted, yet the one at Headingley was forced on the followers of Pakistan cricket due an erroneous scoreboard. That has to be kept in mind when censuring the guilty and one would be happy if that does not happen again – here in the ongoing triangular series and on any other cricket stadium in the world.
A man can fly after taking 7 wickets in a One Day International – Waqar Younis at Leeds
Photo © CricInfo
One feels such invasion should not have surprised the local sport administrators, especially those manning and organising matches. One need only recall soccer hooliganism to know what charged up emotions can do and cause. Fortunately, our followers only invade and not run amok like English soccer fans. The established English daily, `The Times’, carried the news of Leeds invasion on its front page, though mildly worded. Other papers took their knives out and denigrated the unwanted behaviour in no uncertain words and rightly so. Yet, all conveniently ignored happening on another sporting arena, consigning it to inside pages, The Times reported it on page 15.The incident relates to AS Roma footballers being ‘stripped naked’ by their followers during a pitch invasion minutes before the match was completed. Most of the footballers were robbed of their shirts, shorts, even boots and socks. It was a brutal invasion, a BIZARRE almost brutal souvenir hunt. And yet it merely made page 15!Naturally, one should be looking forward to stall these invasions rather than highlighting the ‘unruly mob’. And it can be eliminated only if efforts are coordinated and directed towards educating followers of the spirit of the game. ‘It is not cricket’ – these invasions and should not happen.
Trescothick bowled first ball

All other infringements aside, the day and the match, belonged to Waqar Younis, written off by most at the start of the series. Yes, it was a good toss to win, more so amid Headingley’s peculiar atmospherics. If at Lord’s he was line and length, at Headingley he was an executioner. What an act it was. Trescothick bowled first ball, cleaned up by a yorker that left him groping and the rest through an extended slip cordon that at one point had five fielders. Seven could have been eight had Kitchen been ‘eagle-eyed’ and who knows it would have been nine had that happened. And this is how it all happened – 0.1 overs, Trescothick; 6.1 overs, Knight; 10.3 overs, Vaughan; 13.0 overs, Owais Shah; 14.1 overs, Collingwood; 16.4 overs, Stewart; 18.4 overs, Cork. And at 58 for 7, we saw Waqar Younis complete his quota of 10-0-36-7, the first bowler in ODI to take the first seven wickets. His analysis included one no-ball, one wide and only one boundary. Waqar took wickets in his 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th over. Watching him do it, one thought 1992 was a year ago. Waqar Younis ran spiritedly, bowled spiritedly and shone ever brightly. If in 1992 England were ‘waqarred’ here in Headingley they were ‘waqared-in’ and Waqar showed age is no barrier if one is fit, has rhythm and strides well.Others also caught the eye, notably Fazl-e-Akbar, a forced induction due non-availability of Shoaib Akhtar and Wasim Akram. He was a perfect foil for Waqar, for he bowled a nagging length, pitching up and made full use of the conditions.

In batting, Yousuf Youhana was his usual dour self and Abdur Razzaq, yet again, endorsed his all-round potential. Sadly, all was not rosy. Saeed Anwar struggled, as did Shahid Afridi and disappointing was Saqlain Mushtaq’s bowling. As was Youhana, blundering, butter-fingered fielding. The win, however, was emphatic and morale boosting and timely too with a dress rehearsal coming up against Australia at Trent Bridge on Tuesday before the curtain comes down on the series in the final at Lord’s on June 23rd.A win here certainly will help and somehow lessen the psychological advantage the Aussies hold over Pakistan. But for that to happen runs have to be put on board and that can only happen if Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi can get their act together.

Roberts urges Levy to appoint Rodgers

Graham Roberts insists that Tottenham Hotspur have to appoint Brendan Rodgers as their next manager, in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

Spurs beat Leicester City 4-2 on the final day of the season on Sunday to confirm a seventh-place finish and deny the Foxes qualification for the Champions League.

Rodgers has reportedly already rejected a move to Spurs already, as he looks to remain with the Foxes, with whom he has won the FA Cup this season.

Still, Roberts is convinced that Tottenham need a new project as they look to rebuild after a dispiriting campaign played primarily under the management of Jose Mourinho.

Roberts believes that Spurs need to appoint “another Pochettino” and he has made the claim that Rodgers is absolutely the best option still out there and has urged Daniel Levy to pull out all the stops to get him to north London.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think we do need to rebuild. We need another five year plan, we need another Pochettino and I think Brendan Rodgers would be the ideal person to come in, use some of the youngsters and say ‘we might not finish in the top six next year but we’re building for the next 10 years’.

“I think Brendan Rodgers is the right choice, for me. You have to do everything in your power, if you want somebody, you can get them but you have to go with all guns firing.”

Leicester lost their final two games of the campaign and subsequently missed out on a top four finish for the second successive season.

Gers eye Santiago Moreno

According to The Daily Telegraph (via The Scotsman), Glasgow Rangers are interested in signing Santiago Moreno from Colombia outfit America de Cali.

The Lowdown: Rangers planning for the new season

With the 2020/21 season now over, Rangers can fully concentrate on next season and beyond as they look to defend their Premiership title and build a squad capable of competing with the best of the best in the Champions League.

They have already brought in Fashion Sakala from Oostende (rangers.co.uk), while Nnamdi Ofoborh will also join up with the Gers after signing for the club in January.

The Latest: Gers want Moreno

Now, it has been reported the Gers are interested in signing winger Moreno.

Leeds United and Southampton are two other sides mentioned as potential suitors for the Colombian, following previous links suggesting the Whites and Gers would battle it out this summer.

The Verdict: Up-and-coming talent

Moreno has broken into the America de Cali side this year, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 22 matches in all competitions (Transfermarkt) – he has 10 strikes throughout his career. He has even been likened to Sadio Mane (Glasgow Live), displaying the ability he has and what he could bring to the 55-time Scottish champions.

Of course, given he has played his football in South America, he is somewhat of an unknown quantity, and he would need time to adapt to European football. However, with him valued at just £585,000 (Transfermarkt), he could be available for a bargain price for the Gers, and at the age of just 21, he has plenty of years ahead of him to improve.

The youngster could be an inspired signing for Ross Wilson and co. It would be sweet for them to capture his services ahead of Leeds, who have been a thorn in Rangers’ side in recent transfer windows as they have targetted the likes of Ryan Kent (RTE), Glen Kamara and Borna Barisic (Sportske Novosti).

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this article.
