Journalist provides Man Utd managerial update

Manchester United could still appoint current Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor this season, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What’s the story?

The Northern Irishman is believed to be high up on the United hierarchy’s wishlist as they line up possible replacements for Solskjaer following their disappointing start to the campaign.

Several reports have claimed that Rodgers is the leading candidate to take over the Old Trafford hot seat, but it seems as though the Glazers will keep faith with their Norwegian tactician for the time being.

However, transfer insider Jones has refused to rule out Solskjaer being replaced by the 48-year-old before the campaign comes to a close amid mounting pressure.

He told GIVEMESPORT: I wouldn’t rule it out later in the season somewhere if United can’t ride this out. It seems strange but it is definitely plausible from what I’m hearing.”

Man Utd fans will be excited

News that Rodgers could take the reins at United over the coming months will leave a large section of the club’s supporters feeling excited.

The former Celtic boss has cultivated an enviable reputation as one of British football’s most astute and innovative tacticians in recent years, guiding the Hoops to seven major trophies in just two-and-a-half years.

He then continued to prove his credentials at the King Power Stadium, guiding the Foxes to consecutive fifth-place finishes in the Premier League before claiming the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Solskjaer, on the other hand, is yet to find a piece of silverware during his tenure with the Red Devils, overseeing an agonising trophy drought for the 20-time English champions.

The Scandinavian’s good work should not be forgotten, though. Consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, a successful squad rebuild, and the blooding of several academy graduates have all marked his tenure.

However, concerns over whether Solskjaer is capable of taking United to the next step in their development and competing with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool for major honours are ever-increasing.

A ceiling appears to have been reached under his tutelage, and therefore, Rodgers’ arrival would be welcomed by many in United’s fanbase.

Former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell has been appointed as the new chairman of selectors by the board. His appointment is part of an ICC-recommended restructuring of cricket in Zimbabwe where former players are being brought back into the mainstream.”Alistair will bring a wealth of knowledge to the selection process as well as the organization, we are delighted to welcome him to the team,” Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) managing director Ozias Bvute told AP.Campbell takes over from as chairman from Kenyon Ziehl, a former first-class player. Campbell’s appointment follows former captain and coach Dave Houghton’s decision to return home to Zimbabwe to work as a part-time technical advisor. Andy Waller, the former opening batsman, has also been given a full-time job as a coach while former captain Heath Streak is still negotiating with Zimbabwe Cricket for a post with the Under-19 side.”I’ve been watching the boys from the sidelines over the last few years and I am looking forward to working closer with them,” Campbell said.Campbell, played 60 Tests and 188 ODIs for Zimbabwe as a top-order batsman. He scored 2858 Test runs at 27.21, and 5185 in ODIs at 30.50. He took over the captaincy in 1996 and led the side to some notable successes, including the country’s first away-series win in Pakistan in 1998-99.

Collingwood spurred by Adelaide debacle

For Paul Collingwood, one word – “Adelaide” – is all that will be required to ensure that his competitive juices are fully flowing come Wednesday morning

Andrew Miller in Cardiff06-Jul-2009On the eve of an Ashes series, extra motivation is not something that either side will lack, but for Paul Collingwood, one word – “Adelaide” – is all that will be required to ensure that his competitive juices are fully flowing come Wednesday morning. For Collingwood, the second Test of England’s disastrous campaign in 2006-07 truly was the best of times, and the worst of times. On the second day of the match he completed the double-century that seemed destined to lead England’s fightback from their 277-run drubbing in the first Test at Brisbane; by the final afternoon, however, he was clinging to the wreckage of England’s second innings, 22 not out from 119 balls, as Shane Warne led the charge towards Australia’s incredible six-wicket victory. After that astonishing turnaround, of which there had been no prospect until Andrew Strauss’s dismissal midway through the morning session of the final day, there was no holding Australia back. They swarmed to victory in the remaining three Tests to complete their first Ashes whitewash since 1920-21, and claim absolute vengeance for their thrilling defeat in England in 2005. For better or worse, Collingwood has been clinging to the events of that Test ever since.”I’ll be honest with you, it still hurts me and hurts the team talking about Adelaide,” he told Cricinfo. “We got ourselves into a great position to win or draw the game, and the whole Ashes series could have turned out a lot differently if that had happened. Looking back, it really took the guts out of us as a team – and certainly as an individual, it took the guts out of me – because we had been in such a great position.”It’s amazing how high you can get in terms of your emotions, scoring a double hundred as an individual, and then how quickly a game can turn, and how low you can actually get within such a short space of time,” he said. “As a cricketer, I went from as high as I’ve ever been, to as low as I’ve ever been, in the space of a day. That’s the amazing thing about cricket. You’ve got to be so mentally strong as a cricketer to go through the emotional range in the space of days.”No player is better placed than Collingwood to pass on the lessons that England were taught that day, not even Kevin Pietersen, who also scored a century in that Test, but whose success against all opponents and in all forms of the game somehow set him apart from his colleagues. As Collingwood himself put it: “For most of my career, I’ve always learned from adversity rather than success.”Nearly three years on, however, and there is plenty that is different about the two line-ups, particularly Australia’s, which has been stripped of many of the men who made that Adelaide turnaround possible – most notably Warne, but also Glenn McGrath and now Brett Lee as well.”They were a team who pounced on an opportunity, and that hurt a lot,” Collingwood said. “Last time they had a lot of experience and skill, and they knew about taking opportunities, which we were slow in doing ourselves. They gradually wore us down, but if you give it a good go from ball one, and if you have that aggressive attitude against Australia, you’ll do pretty well.”I guess it’s about going out there and believing in yourself,” he said. “They are a very good side so you’ve got to get your technique in place, but the mental side of playing against Australia is the crucial thing, and that’s going to be new for a lot of the players in both sides. You’ve got to adapt your game and strategies to overcome everything that goes with the Ashes – the media hype, the atmosphere in the grounds. It’s completely different.”Collingwood happens to believe that the attitude within the England team is completely different as well, and attributes that to the lessons learned in the midst of humiliation. “Coming off the pitch last time in Australia, I had conversations with the boys, and we talked about what we were going to do to make sure that [experience] doesn’t happen again. It’s amazing how it hits you hard as sportsmen.”There were certainly a few nerves going into that [series] but there were also a few grey areas in the team,” he said. “This time we are more confident in what we are about, and what we’re doing, and that’s crucial. Mentally it’s a belief thing. It’s not about being overconfident or arrogant, but about going at them – not in a verbal sense, but in body language.”

“For most of my career, I’ve always learned from adversity rather than success.”

Given the history of Anglo-Australian relations, verbal jousting will undoubtedly play a major part in the series, although Collingwood – who toughened up his game in Aussie grade cricket in the mid-1990s, and was at the forefront of England’s aggressive approach in 2005, particularly in an incident involving Simon Jones and Matthew Hayden at Edgbaston – questioned whether any banter that takes place on the field can really be bracketed as “sledging”.”It’s a bit of a silly word, an overused term” he said. “If it’s a chat, or a joke, is that sledging? Sometimes situations come around when you need to back each other up as a team, like with Hayden last time around, but we’re not going to go looking for it. With the Aussies, they sometimes sniff a moment to get right on top, but sometimes – like at Adelaide – they were like any other team that you are on top of, and went very quiet.”They are very good at it though,” he said. “I played a lot of cricket out there in 1996 as a youngster, and it’s in their culture. They come hard at you, with people coming up to you who don’t like Pommies, simple as that. But people react in different ways. Mentally some people take it personally and let it affect their techniques, some people don’t even listen to it. We have strong characters who can stand up to it.”Whatever transpires in the coming months, Collingwood could hardly be more primed for the challenge. “I’ve got no need for extra motivation,” he said. “From a very early age, all I wanted to do is win the Ashes, and what happened last time fuels me even more to win, no matter who is in the team.”It can only happen against Australia, because it’s the ultimate. Without putting down the likes of South Africa and West Indies, you just don’t get all the emotion against any other side. When you do well against Australia, it’s such a buzz because you know you’re playing against the best in the world.”

Strategic time-out to be reviewed after tournament

Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has said that the mid-innings strategic time-out, which has come in for widespread criticism, would be reviewed at the end of the season.Sachin Tendulkar had said the seven-and-a-half minute interval, introduced in this year’s tournament, hampered a team’s momentum, and others including Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody and Chennai Super Kings head of cricket operations VB Chandrasekhar had also voiced their disapproval.”I neither agree nor disagree [with the criticism] … this is an innovation, an experiment we are trying this year,” Modi wrote in his blog on the IPL’s official website. “And as with all innovations, there are probably good points to this, and also bad points – but there will be time to evaluate those.”When the league is over, the last ball has been bowled here in South Africa and a winner has been crowned, our real work will begin to fine tune the IPL for improvements next year.”On the basis of an exhaustive review, we will be able to arrive at some conclusions on what has worked, what hasn’t worked; we will be able to decide what needs to be changed, or fine-tuned, or scrapped altogether.”Modi also defended the interruption in play, writing that “such practices are normal in the world of sport be it on the Grid-Iron or the basketball courts of the NBA.”Modi had earlier said the tactical time-out was designed to allow teams to discuss strategy instead of having to spend time on it during the course of the game, and hence minimise match-time delays.

NZ target Sehwag and Gambhir

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Daniel Vettori believe a major part of the upcoming tour will come down to the conditions, alien to most of the travelling Indian team

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Daniel Vettori believe a major part of the upcoming tour will come down to the conditions, which is alien to most of the Indian team. Vettori said that though the pitches had improved a lot, the weather could play a part in deciding many of the games.”India have come with a formidable reputation, and they’ve earned it over the last couple of years with the way they’ve played cricket,” Vettori said. “But I suppose we enjoy playing at home, we feel a lot more comfortable here and we’ve got a pretty good record. Hopefully those things play in our favour, but we also understand this is one of our biggest challenges.”I think it comes back to our conditions, and hopefully we know those and we can perform in them. I think the wickets are going to be very good, the weather may play a small part in it, but the ability to contain the Indian top order, with the likes of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in it, is probably going to be crucial to our success.”India have been trying to make the best of whatever time they have got to train here in their first week in New Zealand. “Usually we practise for two to two-and-half hours. Since we had four days here we wanted to make the most out of it,” Dhoni said. “Especially when we are practising outdoors, maybe the next day it may rain and we won’t get the same facilities so we were practising for three-and-a-half to four hours.”Dhoni said while New Zealand were a young side, their team work meantthey could never be written off. “New Zealand is known for the kind ofcricket they play as a team. They don’t really depend on one individual. That’s what is good about us too. We have the kind of players who canreally make you win games on their own, but we are always looking for thewhole team to perform.”Vettori was happy to play with a young side which hasjust started winning. “There are a lot of guys who have played under 10games, but a lot of those were won,” Vettori said. “So when you have thatfeeling within the team coupled with some experienced players, it makesfor confidence about their performances. We’re hoping to continue on that, the likes of Martin Guptills and Neil Brooms being fantastic in the shorttime they’ve been there. We’re hoping they can capitalise on what they’vedone in a short period of time.”But the youngsters are pitted against a star-studded Indian line-up andVettori is particularly worried about Sehwag and Gambhir, his DelhiDaredevil team-mates. “A lot of our emphasis is on Sehwag, and probablyGambhir, with their opening partnership,” Vettori said. “If we can put somepressure on India early then maybe it gives us a chance, but when theseguys get away, it’s always hard to pull back in.”We are not underestimating how good a player and how destructive he[Yuvraj Singh] can be. We’re just hoping we get to him early by ourplans for Gambhir and Sehwag because if we can do that, hopefully he’smore vulnerable than when he comes in with a bit of platform.”

Nixon reveals off-field Derby development

Wayne Rooney’s Derby County side could be handed yet more transfer sanctions by the EFL.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Alan Nixon’s report for The Sun, in which the journalist revealed that Derby could be handed a two-year transfer ban by the EFL – if the Rams do not settle their outstanding transfer debts.

Nixon continued by stating that these reported unpaid transfer fees are now late for a second time, with the governing body giving Mel Morris until the end of September in a final chance for the owner to settle the debts, or else the Championship club could be restricted from signing players until the summer of 2023.

Fans will be fuming

With Rooney already having to operate under strict EFL transfer guidelines this summer, with the 35-year-old having brought in five free agents on restricted wages, the news that the former England captain may now not be able to bring in any further new signings over the next two years is sure to have left fans of the club fuming.

Indeed, while the Rams boss has done an impressive job so far this season considering the testing off-field circumstances – with Derby picking up six points over their opening five fixtures of the Championship campaign, suffering defeat just once – should the club indeed be forbidden from bringing any fresh faces in over the next two seasons, the chances of Rooney’s side remaining in the second tier of English football by the end of the potential transfer ban would appear to be slim to none.

As such, the 35-year-old manager and fans of the club alike will undoubtedly be hoping that Morris can resolve the situation prior to the EFL’s deadline, or else the owner could well be consigning the club to relegation to the third tier come the end of the season.

Luke Hatfield not expecting Wolves to swap Neves for Ramsey

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has rubbished claims that Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey could be heading to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Ruben Neves heading in the opposite direction.

According to Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, the two clubs are in discussions over a potential swap deal just hours before the transfer window slams shut.

Juventus put former Arsenal midfielder Ramsey up for sale before the window even opened as injuries and a loss of form have resulted in him making just 66 appearances for the Italian giants.

The Wales international’s wages of £400,000-per-week have resulted in Juventus being willing to sell Ramsey for as little as £10million, according to TuttoJuve.

Neves, 24, has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal during the transfer window but Wolves do not appear keen on letting the Portugal international leave Molineux.

Hatfield is not expecting Ramsey and Neves to trade clubs with the deadline getting closer.

He told Football FanCast: “Swap deals, in general, don’t happen too often because there are so many moving parts.

“You’ve got both clubs having to want either player, both players wanting moves to those clubs and then the wages and playing time have got to add up. It’s so hard to get a swap deal done nowadays.

“It wouldn’t shock me if you see Neves still at Wolves. Ramsey’s wages are a hard one to overcome.”

Vineet stars in Tripura's tense win

Scorecard
After starring with the bat yesterday, Vineet Jain shone with the ball on the final day to help Tripura close out a tense 54-run victory over Services in Delhi. Services’ batsmen put up a much-improved show in the second innings in a determined pursuit of 316.The innings revolved around Jasvir Singh’s patient 67 after Ashish Mohanty had made the most of a reprieve – being bowled off a no ball – to score 52. Jasvir also got support from No. 9 Shuvra Karmakar, who made a quick 43, as Services looked to clinch their first win since their ten-wicket victory over Tripura two years ago. With the match in its final session, and Services on 249 for 7, it could have still swung either team’s way.Medium-pacer Vineet secured five points for Tripura by removing both Jasvir and Karmakar in the space of five runs before knocking over Hari Prasad’s middle stump.
Scorecard
Kerala grabbed three points for their first-innings lead after playing out a high-scoring draw against Goa in Palakkad. With Kerala still batting on the morning of the fourth day, an outright result was always out of the question but there was still plenty of drama.Preambhastn Prem’s 138 steered Kerala towards the first-innings lead and at 426 for 4, with only 35 more needed, the three points seemed in the bag. But they had to endure some nervy moments before getting them as left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati struck thrice to reduce Kerala to 458 for 8. The match then meandered to a stalemate; Kerala’s tail-enders took the score to 486 and Goa replied with 69 for 3 before play was called off.
Scorecard
Shafiq Khan’s century came too late for Jammu and Kashmir since Jharkhand had already gained a first-innings lead in a match that eventually meandered to a draw in Jamshedpur. Twelve wickets fell on day one as Jharkhand bowled J&K out for 225 and their openers with 23 on the board. Half-centuries by Manoj Joglekar (77) and debutant Aditya Pratap and a quick lower-order 37 by Vijay Sharma by boosted J&K’s total after medium-pacer Kuldeep Sharma had reduced them to 52 for 5.In reply, Jharkhand’s first-class debutant Ishank Jaggi scored a half-century and, along with Saurabh Tiwary, helped his side to 301. Shafiq’s 143 anchored J&K’s second innings though he was assisted by Joglekar, who scored a second half-century, Samiullah Beigh, with a useful 40, and Sharma, with 30.Their total at the end of day three – 309 for 7 – was not enough to set a target their bowlers could defend so J&K batted on and were finally dismissed for 366 on the final day giving Jharkhand 50 overs to chase 291. The hosts chose to play for a draw and Subroto Ghosh and Jaggi helped themselves to half-centuries on the way to three points.

Celtic: Hoops monitoring Kerr Smith

Celtic, along with the likes of Crystal Palace and Leicester City, are monitoring Dundee United defender Kerr Smith, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Smith profiled

Smith is just 16 years of age and is under contract with his current employers for a further two years.

He’s made seven senior appearances for The Tangerines, two of which have come this season – he has been described as ‘fantastic’ by teammate Mark Connolly.

The Scot actually spent a week with Manchester United last year on trial, and it seems as if he could be on the move for good before the end of the month.

The Latest: Monday report

The Scottish Sun shared a story regarding Kerr on Monday lunchtime.

Within their report, they labelled Southampton as the frontrunners for the Scot and claimed that Celtic, Palace, Leeds and Leicester are all tracking the defender.

It seems as if the Hoops are weighing up a potential late swoop for Smith, even though they are also closing in on Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales in a deal worth £500,000.

The Scottish Sun are expecting the Dundee United board to move Smith on over the next six days.

The Verdict: Hjelde replacement?

Celtic look set to lose a young centre-back to Leeds in Leo Hjelde, so perhaps Smith could come in to replace the Norwegian going forward.

Smith is regarded as one of Scotland’s best young talents, so down the line, winning the race for the 16-year-old could turn out to be a real coup.

It seems as if Celtic will have to beat a number of Premier League clubs to his services, though, so it could be a big ask in the final days of the window.

In other news: ‘Great chance’ – 34 y/o feels £988k-p/y ace will be a Celtic player on Sep 1 after Romano claim.
