West Brom journalist provides O’Shea update

West Brom centre-back Dara O’Shea’s current injury situation remains unknown, according to reliable journalist Steve Madeley.

The Lowdown: O’Shea suffers injury

The Baggies have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, sitting second in the Championship after picking up 13 points from their opening five games.

O’Shea has been an ever-present in that time, playing every minute of action, but he suffered an injury in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal on Wednesday night.

The Latest: Madeley provides update

West Brom are no doubt sweating over the news, but taking to Twitter on Thursday, The Athletic‘s Madeley simply offered a two-word update, revealing they are yet to find out the severity:

“Nothing yet.”

This likely means they are waiting on the results of a scan, which could be a concern given his importance at the Hawthorns.

The Verdict: Huge player for Baggies

The hope is that O’Shea’s injury is not too serious and that he will be back for next weekend’s Championship clash with Millwall at the Hawthorns.

The 22-year-old has averaged 2.4 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game in the league so far this season, outlining his defensive brilliance.

If O’Shea ends up being absent for an extended period of time, he could be a huge loss for Valerien Ismael’s side, as they look for a swift return to the Premier League.

Positive Krejza ready to impress at home

‘A dream debut doesn’t mean I can do it at that level, but it definitely means I have confidence in myself to do that, and confidence from my captain’ © AFP

The offspinner Jason Krejza has bowled one over at the Gabba and it went for 18, seven fewer than his initial offering in Tests in Nagpur 11 days ago. Andrew Symonds was the mean batsman in 2004-05 when Krejza was a 21-year-old – “He took me out of the Gabba” – but the Queenslander may be a team-mate on Thursday if both are named in the first Test side againstNew Zealand.Krejza captured an amazing 12 wickets on debut following some heavy early treatment from Virender Sehwag, who welcomed him with a six and a four in the opening over. If the match against New Zealand was not being played atthe Gabba Krejza would be guaranteed a second match, but he is not sure of his place despite promising recommendations from Ricky Ponting and Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors. He has a lot more self-belief following the Nagpur performance and is prepared to adjust his tactics to cope with Australian conditions. “A dream debut doesn’t mean I can do it at that level, but it definitely means I have confidence in myself to do that, and confidence from my captain,” said Krejza. After five days spent knowing the Indian batsmen would attack him, Krejza is looking forward to facing the more cautious New Zealanders. “I guess I’ll be trying to attack again, depending on the situation,” he said. “I wouldn’t be expecting them to be coming out and doing a Sehwag to meagain.”Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder are the most aggressive of the New Zealand batsmen, but the destructive Symonds is now on Krejza’s side. “I got Andrew when he was about 80 not out and it just started raining, so I got thrown the ball to bowl one over,” Krejza said of his first-classdebut. “He took me out of the Gabba. It was interesting for a young fella, to be given the ball against him. It was an experience to remember.”

ECB under fire as players go cold on Stanford

The ECB is under increasing fire as its five-year deal with Allen Stanford comes under the media spotlight amid calls for the contract to be reviewed and reports that the England players are rapidly going off the whole scheme

The ECB is under increasing fire as its five-year deal with Allen Stanford comes under the media spotlight amid calls for the contract to be reviewed and reports that the England players are rapidly going off the whole scheme. On Wednesday, what started as rumbling criticism over Stanford’s conduct on Monday became something altogether more serious as the day wore on. By late afternoon England’s players were consulting with their union, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, over the whole event.”I’ve spoken to a number of the players and there are real and significant concerns about this whole thing,” PCA chief executive Sean Morris told the Mirror. “We had reservations from the beginning and everything we were worried about appears to be happening.”The England board’s position was also shifting. “I’m hearing there are serious concerns from the ECB at the manner in which the tournament has been staged,” said BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said late on Wednesday. “There are lessons to be learned for us all from the events of this week,” an ECB spokesman admitted. “That was always going to be the case because it is new territory for all of us, the ECB and Sir Allen. With four years of the agreement still to run there may be things we can do differently.”Senior ECB officials, who almost bent over backwards to welcome Stanford and his millions at Lord’s last summer, were also under fire with calls for them to stand down after failing to undertake adequate checks on Stanford. Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire’s chairman, told the Daily Telegraph that the position of Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, was in doubt. “I asked the ECB to do a lot more checking on Stanford and this competition. We made it very clear we that we should not enter into this agreement without proper checks but he [Clarke] had already done the deal. The board should resign collectively”.The ECB and Stanford agreed on an unprecedented US$100 million deal in the summer, spread over five years, but the inaugural competition this week in Antigua has attracted mounting criticism in England. The flack really started to fly on Monday when Stanford was pictured with Matt Prior’s wife on his knee and with his arms around two other girlfriends of members of the England team during a match the night before. It provoked a strong reaction from parts of the media, and in addition, one England player reportedly said: “If that was my wife he’d put on his lap I would have wanted to punch him”.Last night’s planned cocktail party with the teams was cancelled at short notice, with officials rather unconvincingly claiming there were “logistical problems over a venue”. One journalist was unconvinced. “As if Stanford would ever have trouble in securing a venue for anything in Antigua,” he noted. “He owns most of them.”Additionally, the pitch – which was rolled for more than 40 hours prior to the tournament – has lacked pace and carry, restricting bowlers’ confidence to pitch it up while hampering batsmen’s strokeplay.

Stanford, who owns the ground where the matches are being held, also has access to the players’ dressing rooms, which has helped cultivate an uneasy feeling among the teams. With Saturday’s US$20 million match approaching, even Kevin Pietersen is feeling the pinch. “The longer this week goes on and the more people make of it, the more you just want to get it over with really,” he said. “You always want to win a fixture for England but what will be, will be. I’m not too fussed.”Pietersen’s team-mate, Ian Bell, offered similar sentiments while expressing concern at the timing of the event. “In a way, this week probably has come a little bit at the wrong time before we go and play a really good team in India,” he told the BBC. “Momentum is something we have been building over the last two months, and with the Ashes around the corner next year we want to build on that and stay on the path that we have been going on under KP.”We need to put in some hard yards there when we get to India and hopefully this week is not going to distract anyone from doing that.”

Surrey have signed opening batsman Michael Brown from Hampshire on a two-year deal.Brown had been tipped to make the move during the closing weeks of the season, but Hampshire were keen to try and keep him at The Rose Bowl. However, the lure of regular one-day cricket alongside a four-day place has secured the deal, even though it means he will be playing second division Championship cricket next year.”I am very much looking forward to representing Surrey and will endeavour to contribute both on and off the field to the team playing winning cricket in all forms of the game,” said Brown. He enjoyed a solid season in the Championship, scoring 940 runs at 40.86 and finished on a positive note with 93 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, but struggled to secure a place in the one-day team. The move to The Oval means a step down in the Championship after Surrey were relegated with a victory, but Brown’s signing is the latest rebuilding step by the club.

Gers in SPFL hot water

Glasgow Rangers have snubbed new SPFL title sponsor Cinch, which has now led to a legal dispute with the league’s governing body.

The Lowdown: Gers kick off Premiership campaign

The Gers started the defence of their Premiership title on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Livingston – they already lead Celtic by three points after they were defeated 2-1 by Hearts.

Next up, the Gers face Malmo in the Champions League third qualifying round as they aim to reach the group stages of the competition.

The Latest: Gers in hot water

Against Livingston, the Gers did not feature Cinch on their sleeves, while they also refused to advertise the sponsor on their hoardings around the pitch.

As such, the Gers are in a battle with the SPFL as the former believe there are gaps in the contract, meaning there is no need for them to fill the obligations (The Daily Record).

The Verdict: Needless row

This, quite frankly, feels like a needless row. The Gers do have a fraught relationship with the SPFL, of course, and there is clearly no love lost between the two (The Herald).

However, this does feel like an argument for the sake of one between the two sides as the season starts.

In this case, the SPFL have managed to bring in a new sponsor that will no doubt benefit all of the clubs in the top flight. It feels a little in this case that Rangers have decided to cut their nose off to spite their face. They have a huge season ahead of them – they should be looking for as few distractions as possible.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid with this journalist’s tweet.

Ball: Crystal Palace would be huge chance for Morgan Rogers

Former professional footballer Michael Ball believes that Crystal Palace are offering Manchester City youngster Morgan Rogers a huge opportunity should he make the move to Selhurst Park.

According to the Daily Mail earlier this month, Crystal Palace were in talks with Manchester City over Rogers, with City wanting around £7m for the youngster.

Rogers spent the second half of last season on loan at League One side, Lincoln City, where he made 28 appearances (including three play-off matches) and scored six goals and provided four more.

After a successful loan spell at Sincil Bank, which has caught the eye of Crystal Palace, Michael Ball told Transfer Tavern: “That’s a huge opportunity to have at 19-years-old, you could stay at Manchester City for two or three years and still not get game time.

“You don’t want to be 21/22 with only one or two senior appearances. You know your career is short and if you get an opportunity to play senior football like any youngster, Morgan included, take that opportunity and go and prove to the world that you can be a Premier League footballer.”

From his recruitment so far this summer, it appears new Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira wants to bring in young players to the football club and at 19 years of age, Morgan Rogers would fit that ethos also.

Palace have completed four signings so far this summer – Marc Guehi (21), Michael Olise (19), Jacob Montes (22) and Joachim Andersen (25).

Everton: Aston Villa interested in Thierry Small

Aston Villa are interested in a move for Everton starlet Thierry Small, amid ambiguity surrounding his future on Merseyside [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Everton get ready for the 2021/22 season

Moving into 2021/22, many Toffees fans will be intrigued to see how Rafael Benitez cultivates a side capable of challenging for continental football this term.

Signing some new stars will of course be essential, but retaining young players who can make an impact in the long-term will be of equal precedence to the Spaniard.

Could the Toffees be set to lose one of their brightest talents following recent reports?

The Latest: Aston Villa enter race for teenage prodigy Small

Aston Villa are said to have joined the race for 16-year-old sensation Small, according to a Football Insider recruitment source.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have all been noted as monitoring his situation in the last few weeks.

Interestingly, Villa may have an advantage in the chase for the youngster, owing to the fact he originates from the Midlands as well as his uncle Bryan Small being a former player at the club.

The Verdict: Losing Small would be a bitterly disappointing for Everton

Losing the prodigy would no doubt be a major blow to the Finch Farm hierarchy.

In 2020/21, the Solihull-born man made 30 appearances combined for the senior side, Everton Under-23’s, and Everton Under-18’s, registering seven goal contributions; six goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

His only first-team appearance came in a 3-0 January win against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, as he replaced Jose Baxter as the youngest player to ever play for the club [BBC].

Once labelled as ‘quality’ by now Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, the Blues should be looking to tie Small down imminently if at all possible [Football London].

Gold shares behind-scenes Kane update

Writing on Twitter, sharing the latest on Harry Kane and his future at Tottenham Hotspur, reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped an update ‘from inside the club’ as well as from interested parties.

The Lowdown: Kane wants out?

Sky Sports first broke news of Kane’s desire to leave north London this summer in search of a new challenge and the larger potential to win silverware.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been heavily linked as his suitors from the Premier League.

Kane himself admitted to talkSPORT (via the Evening Standard) recently that he hasn’t had the chance to speak to either new Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo or managing director Fabio Paratici, but still feels ‘loved’ by the club amid his exit saga.

The Latest: Gold drops Kane update…

Writing on Twitter, Gold has shared a ‘big piece’ he contributed to football.london, which gives his view on the 27-year-old ‘from inside the club’ as well as other writers from teams interested.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-4/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The reporter explains that there are some within Tottenham who are disappointed at the way Kane and others around him approached the situation of wanting to leave – especially with the timing at the end of 2020/2021.

Privately, Spurs have also made it abundantly clear they have no intention of letting him leave this summer, with only a ‘ridiculous offer’ perhaps enough to tempt them.

The view inside Man City is that while they could smash their current £65 million transfer record for Kane, they’re ‘not desperate’ and won’t go above a certain ceiling of valuation (Stuart Brennan).

United, meanwhile, have effectively parked their interest in a number 9 this summer after extending Edinson Cavani’s deal until 2022 – with the Red Devils ‘unlikely’ to invest in any more forwards (Samuel Luckhurst).

At Chelsea, Kane is still on the list and Thomas Tuchel’s side are believed to be in contact, but any movement in the near future is ‘unlikely’ due to his Euro 2020 involvement.

While the Blues are very keen and possess the financial clout, chairman Daniel Levy is arguably least likely to sell to them due to a bad history of deals (Sam Inkersole).

The Verdict: Good news for Spurs?

While the interest in Kane very much remains, Gold himself believes this extensive update from both inside Tottenham and other clubs comes as a ‘positive’ one.

Tottenham continue to take a firm stance on the superstar striker as interested sides look on, with the odds of him staying for next season seeming that bit more favourable as it stands.

He scored 23 goals and notched 14 assists in 35 Premier League starts over 2020/2021 (WhoScored), phenomenal numbers for any player, and keeping the international would be the biggest boost Nuno could possibly receive during the summer transfer window.

Pundit tips Norwich City to steer clear of immediate relegation

Former Norwich City defender Jon Newsome believes the Canaries should be targeting a mid-table finish on their Premier League return.

Despite winning promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking last season, Daniel Farke’s side have still seen talisman Emiliano Buendia depart for Aston Villa.

The Argentinian completed his switch to Villa Park, which was a club-record deal for Dean Smith’s outfit, last month.

The funds gained from the transfer has already helped Norwich to sign the likes of Milot Rashica from Werder Bremen for £9.4million, while the newly-promoted side also fought off stiff competition to secure the loan signing of Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Having suffered an immediate relegation to the Championship during their last stay in the Premier League, Canaries fans will be hoping for a different outcome this time around.

Newsome feels Farke and his squad should finish comfortably clear of the dreaded drop zone.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “Buendia’s move puts you in a really strong position to go out and splash a bit of cash to get to that level where you’re competing in the middle of the Premier League rather than in that relegation scrap.”
