ESPNcricinfo staff08-Mar-2011Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a side strain he picked up during the close win over South Africa two days ago. Chris Tremlett, who has been travelling with the squad as back-up, has been confirmed as his replacement after ICC approval.Tremlett replaced Broad in the Ashes side after he succumbed to an abdominal tear during the Adelaide Test and great success, finishing with 17 wicket at 23.35 from three Tests. He then played four games of England’s 6-1 defeat in the ODIs that followed but was not as effective and leaked 5.24 runs an over.It took England a day of deliberation to settle upon Tremlett as their replacement. There is a school of thought that England could have wanted to keep him on as back-up for Tim Bresnan, who is coming back from a calf injury, and instead pick legspinner Adil Rashid – who is in the Caribbean with the England Lions at present – in the main squad. As it turned out, they went for the safer option.Broad is the second setback England have suffered since their thrilling and inspiring defence of 171 against South Africa in Chennai on Sunday. They travelled to Chittagong without Kevin Pietersen, who had to end his tournament after that game to go back home for his hernia operation.Broad has also travelled home for further assessment in the UK which will determine his recovery and rehabilitation timescale. He is due to appear for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL which starts in April but that will now depend on the assessment of the ECB’s medical staff.Nick Peirce, ECB chief medical officer, confirmed that the injury is separate to the abdominal tear that ruled him out of three Ashes Tests earlier this winter. “Stuart felt some discomfort following the South Africa match and our initial assessment indicated a strain to his left side,” said Peirce.”Subsequent scans have confirmed a significant side strain injury – where the muscle attaches the rib – that will rule him out of the remainder of the World Cup. This is a new injury, separate from the abdominal tear suffered during the Ashes, that requires a period of recuperation and rehabilitation and the duration of this recovery period will be determined following further assessment in the UK.”With Eoin Morgan’s return to the squad providing a silver lining to the Pietersen injury, Broad’s loss could prove to be more significant. He played a crucial part in England’s morale-boosting defence of 171 against South Africa, taking two top-order wickets and also the last two, with South Africa needing just eight when he started the 48th over. The injury was picked up during that game, after Broad had lost almost 5kg following a stomach bug that laid him low ahead of the India match. He said that he could feel the injury during his second spell, but the adrenalin got him through. “I felt a little tight during the South Africa game,” he said. “It started to throb a little bit throughout my second spell. It stiffened up after the game.”It’s quite a common injury within bowlers,” he said. “If the injury is a natural side strain or tear, it’s something you have to be very careful of, and make sure you take your time to get fit again, and not rush back.”England have played four close matches in the tournament so far. With two win, a tie and a defeat, they are one win short of ensuring a place in the knockouts. They face Bangladesh on Friday before going back to Chennai to face West Indies on March 17.

Sehwag reaffirms support for the UDRS

India opener Virender Sehwag has reaffirmed his support for the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), asking for its implementation in all of India’s engagements leading upto, and including the World Cup.”I am a big fan of the UDRS,” Sehwag said. “I want it to be there for the India-New Zealand series, India-South Africa series and in the World Cup. But this is my personal opinion. I was given out two times when I was not out and in such a situation could have gone in for a referral that would have helped me continue to bat.”Sehwag’s stand is in contrast to that of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) and most of India’s top players, including MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, while Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan are for its implementation. India were part of the first trial of the system during their tour of Sri Lanka in 2008. They struggled with their referrals, getting only one of them right, while Sri Lanka successfully challenged 11 decisions.Since then, the BCCI have ensured that India have not had to face the system in their series against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Australia. The upcoming Test series against New Zealand will also not feature it, while the ICC has asked the India and South Africa boards to decide on its implementation for the South Africa tour. Plans are afoot for the UDRS’ one-day debut during the World Cup.Sehwag’s next assignment is the home series against New Zealand, followed by the tour of South Africa in December. He was keen to play all the matches in the New Zealand series, though he is ready to go early to South Africa if the BCCI decides to send some of the senior players before the end of the one-day leg of the New Zealand series. “We would like to play a full team against New Zealand but the schedule is such that a break may be needed,” Sehwag said. “It’s up to the team management and the BCCI to decide on the matter. I would like to play as many ODIs as I can. But if the team management and the BCCI want us to go early to South Africa we will do it.”

Swan and Lynn see Queensland home

Chris Swan gorged on 13 wickets and Chris Lynn sped to 99 as Queensland came from behind to beat South Australia by five wickets

ScorecardChris Swan’s 13 wickets put Queensland on track for victory•Getty ImagesChris Swan gorged on 13 wickets and Chris Lynn sped to 99 as Queensland came from behind to beat South Australia by five wickets. Graham Manou’s aggressive 116 dug the Redbacks out of trouble after they started the day at 4 for 32, and by the time he was last man out they were 198.That left Queensland wanting 226 for victory and they were immediately in difficulty at 2 for 8 and 3 for 41 before Lynn, a 20-year-old right-hander, started to dominate. He put on 76 with Ben Dunk (30) and was a run away from a deserved century when he fended Gary Putland to second slip.James Hopes (46) and Chris Hartley (35) made sure of the win with a day to spare as they repaid Swan for his outstanding efforts. Swan, the swing bowler, was dropped for the previous game but showed he is a master of Brisbane conditions with match figures of 13 for 144, the best in the competition for nine years. His 7 for 75, which beat his day-old career peak, began with three wickets on Thursday and finished with the final three of the innings. Manou, who hit 16 fours and two sixes, was his last victim when he skied to Lynn at cover.

Kaneria released without charge in spot-fixing investigation

Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan legspinner, has been released without charge by police after being arrested in connection with alleged spot-fixing during an English domestic Pro40 match last season. Kaneria was arrested in May, along with Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield, and released on bail without charge pending further inquiries.”Essex police can confirm that a 29-year-old man from Chelmsford has been released from bail in connection with an investigation into cricket-match irregularities. A 22-year-old man, also from Chelmsford, remains on bail until 15 September,” said a police statement. It is believed the investigation centred on a Pro40 win against Durham last September and spot-betting regarding wides and no-balls bowled in the match.Kaneria began the 2010 season as Essex’s overseas player before joining the Pakistan squad, but after he was dropped following the first Test against England, at Trent Bridge, he was resigned by the county and played in the Friends Provident t20 final. However, Westfield was released by Essex last month.Spot-fixing has hit the headlines again in recent weeks following the investigation against Pakistan which came to light during the final Test against England at Lord’s. It has led to Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir – the three players allegedly at the centre of the controversy – being suspended by ICC.

Aston Villa interested in Saint-Maximin

According to a report from The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are interested in signing Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

The lowdown: Explosive start

The 25-year-old has been a revelation since arriving in England from Ligue 1 club Nice and is a fan favourite at St James’ Park.

Since making the £16.5m switch (BBC), the mercurial Frenchman has scored 12 times and provided 14 assists in 85 appearances for the Tyneside club. However, the Magpies could be ready to sell their prized asset, and Villa are watching on with intent…

The latest: Villa interest

As per the Daily Mail, the Villans are believed to be ‘monitoring developments’ surrounding the skilful left winger.

Despite only signing an improved six-year deal at Newcastle in October 2020, it is claimed that the Magpies are ‘willing to cash in’ on Saint-Maximin in order to boost their own transfer budget.

The report stated that Newcastle will ‘listen to offers’ of £50m for the former seven-cap France under-21 ace.

The verdict: Money well spent?

As Steven Gerrard attempts to put his own stamp on the Villa squad, adding a player with the flair and natural ability of Saint-Maximin would be a superb piece of business.

Albeit often flattering to deceive when it comes to end product, as borne out by providing just eight direct goal contributions this season having completed the most successful dribbles per game (4.3) in the entire top-flight (Sofascore), the dazzling Frenchman would be a welcome addition to the Villa ranks.

Predominantly a left winger, the man once hailed as ‘unplayable’ by Rob Lee would likely act as an alternative option to Leon Bailey, who has endured an injury-ravaged first campaign in the Midlands.

Newcastle transfer news on Zapata

Newcastle United can reportedly now sign Duvan Zapata in June after a failed bid in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bid made

The St. James’ Park faithful reportedly had a first bid rejected for Zapata last month, with Atalanta demanding a fee of at least €40m (£33.8m) for his signature.

They did sign Chris Wood from Burnley, but failed in a deadline day move for Hugo Ekitike, and so another striker could be on the agenda for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium in the summer, should they manage to stay up in the Premier League.

The Latest: Go again in June

As per Corriere Bergamo (via Sport Witness), the offer that the North East club made to Atalanta was ‘inadmissible’, but talks can now take place in June over a potential transfer.

However, they may face competition from West Ham United for Zapata, who are also looking for another striker to strengthen their forward line.

The Verdict: Sign him up

Given the failure to land Ekitike, Zapata would be a great alternative option for the final striker spot on Tyneside alongside Wood and Callum Wilson.

Described as a ‘beast’ who is ‘like a train’ by former Atalanta captain Papu Gomez, who also claimed that Zapata is ‘so big his shorts look like underwear’ (Goal), the Colombia international is certainly a player that should have no problems at all coping with the physical demands of the top flight, and in fact should be able to bully defenders easily with his superior strength.

He is not just a physical specimen, but an instinctive goal poacher as well, scoring no fewer than 105 times for four different clubs in the Serie A over the course of the last nine consecutive seasons, and has also contributed a tidy 45 assists (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Zapata seems perfectly made for the Premier League, and the Magpies could be the ones to offer him that chance.

Llorente and Koch backed to start for Leeds

Leeds United ambassador Noel Whelan has backed Diego Llorente and Robin Koch to start at centre-back together against Burnley this weekend.

The Lowdown: Leeds host Burnley

The Whites get their 2022 action underway on Sunday afternoon, with the Clarets making the trip to Elland Road. It is a crucial game at the bottom of the table as Marcelo Bielsa’s side desperately look to find some form and pull themselves clear of danger.

Leeds have been injury-plagued at centre-back throughout the season but Llorente and Koch are both fit for the weekend showdown, with the pair in contention to start.

The Latest: Duo backed to start at centre-back

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan backed the duo to face the Clarets on Sunday in the absence of the injured Liam Cooper, saying:

This is what we bought them for. We bought these players to be our regular centre-halves.

“It’s only due to injuries when they first came into Leeds United. You’ve had Struijk who came into some really good form and started pushing and competing for these places.

“I would love to see the two of them start together. I think a lot of the fans will love to see that partnership try and develop over a space of time, especially when you’ve got Liam Cooper out.

“You can get yourself Luke Ayling back to the right wing-back role, which is fantastic. That’s where he’s got all the energy. Then pop Dallas back into that central midfield area, where we know he loves to play in that position.

“I think you’ve got to look at those two. You’ve got to stop putting round pegs in square holes here and play two quality, international centre-halves together.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-29/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Form a partnership

Having a settled centre-back pairing is crucial to any team’s success, laying the foundations and allowing two players to build a strong on-pitch relationship.

Llorente and Koch may well be tasked with doing that in the coming months, with Cooper expected to be out until March, and Sunday could be the first test of their credentials.

Both players have suffered injuries of their own this season – they have only started 15 league games between them – but now is the time for them to show their worth, hopefully playing their part in Leeds rising up the table.

Leeds United: Bielsa has full support

Leeds Live’s Beren Cross has revealed that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa retains the full support of those inside the dressing room.

What’s the story?

Writing initially on Twitter, he said: “For all of the harsh spotlights cast on Bielsa’s future in recent weeks, there’s nothing but rock-solid, continued support inside the dressing room.”

In an accompanying article for Leeds Live, he added: “Consider the wagons circled in Leeds United’s dressing room when it comes to calls for Marcelo Bielsa’s head from the wider world.

“The slide down the Premier League table since the highs of ninth in May has inevitably brought more noise and criticism upon Bielsa from those in the media looking on from afar.

“While opinions in Elland Road’s boardroom and stands are far less scathing, Bielsa’s position remains rock solid and if anyone dares to doubt player feeling, they would be sorely mistaken.”

Everyone is behind Bielsa

Given the struggles the Whites have endured this season in the Premier League – they lie just a couple of places above the relegation zone after 18 matches played – it’s been no surprise that the pressure has ramped up on Bielsa like it has never done before during his time in England.

The Argentine has had to rue his team’s misfortune with injuries and illnesses over these past few weeks and months in particular, with everything which could go wrong doing so – for instance, the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford have been ruled out for extended periods of time.

Despite the damaging defeats to the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal recently, and the poor run of form overall, Cross’ update that the players are well and truly behind Bielsa is sure to leave Whites fans buzzing.

Many Leeds supporters have embraced Bielsa and his manic ways since the moment he stepped through the door at Elland Road, and the feeling is certainly mutual. Indeed, even during the recent home mauling by the Gunners, many of those at the ground continued to sing their support for the manager.

While things are tough right now in terms of the on-pitch performances and results, the reports that Bielsa has got the backing of key personnel inside the dressing room are very encouraging.

Meanwhile, Orta could solve a big issue at Leeds by signing this colossus…

Celtic: Carter-Vickers talks going well

Celtic’s talks with Tottenham over a permanent move for Cameron Carter-Vickers are thought to be progressing well, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers starring at Parkhead

The Hoops secured the services of the American defender in the final hours of the summer transfer window, adding an option-to-buy clause to the season-long loan arrangement.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then, the 24-year-old has missed just one Premiership fixture, making 23 appearances in green and white. He has been the best performing centre-back at Parkhead, as per WhoScored, with Ange Postecoglou keen to make his move permanent before the summer.

The Latest: Talks progressing well

The Daily Record’s Robbie Copeland shared a story on Saturday lunchtime, with updates on both Carter-Vickers and rumoured target Zinedine Ferhat.

When it came to the Tottenham loanee, the journalist said that ‘noises coming out of the club suggest talks are progressing well’ regarding Celtic’s chances of striking a permanent deal.

The Verdict: Biggest signing of Postecoglou era?

Should a permanent move for Carter-Vickers prove to be Celtic’s next piece of January business, then it would be the most expensive addition under Postecoglou so far and therefore a major sign of intent from the club.

There is thought to be no wriggle room with Spurs when it comes to the £6m clause for the centre-back, meaning that it would surpass the £4.86m they spent on Kyogo Furuhashi last summer.

It’s good to see that the Hoops are willing to back Postecoglou, and who knows, a record fee under the 56-year-old could yet be broken for a second time this month with a possible £6.5m deal for another loanee in Jota.
